I freely admit I have gaps in my Lightroom knowledge and bad photo management habits. There are other factors as well. Within the last year, I switched from a PC (it crashed after heavy use for 6 years) to Mac: iPhone, iPad, and iMac, and I'm still learning the new hardware and software. Then I upgraded to Lightroom 4, then the previously mentioned external hard drive crashed, then I discovered that my two external drives are less identical in folder organization than I thought, so I'm a bit overwhelmed here with technology changes. On top of all this, I'm at a funny stage in my life and photographically--a kind of transition phase. I want to clear stuff out--get rid of the proverbial stuff--and this includes my photos. In many respects, this might be a good time to deal with the photo management issue because I can multitask this problem: get a good management and workflow going and get rid of non-keepers, and better organize those categories of photos I care most about, then move on. In terms of storage, I miss the analogue days: you had a box of negatives and a box of prints. Neither was immune from damage, but in terms of management it was much easier. With digital, well, everyone knows the score there. So, don't blame Lightroom! :-) Cheers, Christine -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO - Feeding kiss (an alternative to extension for macro)
There was some exchange on the list about macro photography and extension a few days ago. Personally I prefer to use stacked lenses for magnification beyond 1X. Here's one I took today, using the 645D, and a 150mm lens stacked with a reversed 75mm. The magnification of this combo is 2X. That's about as much as I can cope with when working handheld. The image is severely cropped, but the motif gives you an idea of the possibilities in the field with this kind of setup. Image only: http://turl.no/kz3 In blog: http://alunfoto.blogspot.no/2012/07/feeding-kiss.html One reason why I prefer stacking over other solutions is that exposure automation keeps working. So you don't have to stop down the lens manually. Another reason is that P-TTL keeps working. Well, sort of; you have to diffuse the flash to avoid overexposure because of the short working distance, but that's okay because you really don't want specular highlights and sharp shadows anyway. And if you're patient, you might actually make AF working. But you have to keep the camera very steady. :-) The knack is to find to lenses that go well together. According to John Shaw (Book; closeups in nature), lenses in the normal range are best for reversing, and moderate tele lenses best for attaching to the camera. Personally I recommend using a tele lens with IF because it makes working distance more predictable. At this price it's what it's worth, but I expect that it also spells the end of the Q. Sad if the body form factor had stayed the same but it had a sensor twice as large it would probably be viable as an alternative to the Nikon 1 series of cameras. Sad, that it was a novelty. Re: Pentax Q Price Cut
At this price it's what it's worth, but I expect that it also spells the end of the Q. Sad if the body form factor had stayed the same but it had a sensor twice as large it would probably be viable as an alternative to the Nikon 1 series of cameras. Sad, that it was a novelty. Maybe it will become a collectors item in the future. While I hope it's not already being dropped, I pretty much agree with you. If it had been this price months ago I might have bought it. I'm not quite sure. I was in a couple of clouds of the stuff and it tasted kind of like chalk, but didn't seem otherwise harmful. It washes off with water, and isn't supposed to stain. Grace has been dabbling with cameras off and on for years. Today, I gave her my Panasonic PS, and she went with me to the farmers market and the park. She shot a lot of keepers. Re: a weekend with the K30
I'm sort of relieved that there isn't enough rationale to get one while already having a K5. I doubted that Pentax would ever come out with a dSLR with a sensor that is the size of a 35mm frame (I worded that just for Paul), but if the Q is going down, I still have a glimmer of hope. Re: a weekend with the K30
That's really good news. An almost K5 with improved AF would be an awesome mid-range camera and will help keep Pentax in the game. BTW, I like the yellow ghost, but I'm thinking duck. Re: Pentax Q Price Cut
One more point. The $200 price tag on the 8.5 mm viewfinder is now completely ludicrous. It would make the Q a much better shooting experience for $100 (or less). ;-) On Sun, Jul 15, 2012 at 10:10 PM, Steven Desjardins drd1...@gmail.com wrote: With a price in the $300's, it's a nice little compact. On Sun, Jul 15, 2012 at 5:13 PM, John Celio neo.venator.com+p...@gmail.com wrote: At this price it's what it's worth, but I expect that it also spells the end of the Q. When the camera lenses start showing up on eBay for cheap, I'll probably get it (assuming the line is actually dropped by Pentax). It'll look good next to my Auto110 set. Re: PESO - Feeding kiss (an alternative to extension for macro)
I really like this, but I do tend toward insect macros. On Sun, Jul 15, 2012 at 12:03 PM, Jostein Øksne p...@alunfoto.no wrote: There was some exchange on the list about macro photography and extension a few days ago. Just a bit of a gearhead diary
I should and probably will make a blog entry on the matter. Hi there! Two days ago new toys arrived. First and foremost, Ricoh GXR with A12 50mm macro module. This is outright amazing little camera with infinite customization and excellent ergonomics. I'd say AF is on par with K10D which is good enough for most practical purposes while the shutter sound is close to none - far quieter than any of my Pentaxes. They have great deal of neat and useful features: 1. Snap focus - you click a button (can be programmed to do so on quick and full pressing of the focus button) - the camera would focus to the pre-defined distance and then you can take a shot. 2. Two-speed manual focus by wire - this is awesome. 3. Focus assist by focus peaking - served to you in two varieties - highly useful. And it works in AF mode too. 4. Ability to save your camera settings to the card for later retrieval. As a person who few times confused Reset with Format of my Pentax camera only to curse immediately as all settings had to be re-done, this is most useful. Great little camera this Ricoh is. Great indeed. And in terms of corporate, I am staying on board, obviously :-). Also I got myself a LR 4.1. I notice no performance degradation compared to LR 3.6. And I am about to get started on the Book module, should be fun. So, life is pretty good in terms of photo gear. Re: Just a bit of a gearhead diary
The GXR is indeed a neat camera. I use mine most with the A12 Camera Mount fitted to use my M-bayonet lenses, but that A12 50 Macro is a very fine piece. There are lots and lots of subtle features. Just don't write your custom configs to the card and then format the card. Be sure to copy the custom configs to your computer before you format the card...
