There may be other reasons not to like iPhoto, but it can be configured not to
import all photos into the iPhoto folder and play them from their existing
location.

The option is in the advanced tab of preferences.

Seriously. When I first tried it, my impression was that it was the one of the
worst pieces of software that I had ever used.

Plus, it has the disadvantage, that I've mentioned I want to avoid, of having
to import every picture into it to display them.

Preview almost does what I want, but it isnt' configurable, and you can't just
point it at a directory tree, you have to select all the photos in the
directory.

I think xview was one that I used to use, and one or two with names starting

xee, and xsee are supposed to do what I want, but they don't seem to work.

I don't want a slideshow file. I just want to point the image

have it show them in a slideshow.

There's going to be a party at my house this weekend, and I'd
like to run a slideshow of some of my better photos on my macbook

works, and I despise iPhoto.
What I want is program that I can print to a directory, or
directory tree, of jpegs, and have it cycle through them. I'd like
to be able to set the rate, and choose whether to play in random
order, or whatever order they're in the directories.

And, as with everything these days, I don't want to pay for it.

Back when Linux was my primary desktop, there were several image
viewing programs that would do this, but with advanced CRS, I
don't remember their names, and there are, of course, twenty seven
million or so programs with "image" or "view" in their name under

I especially like the first one. So fierce!

And yeah, all cats have those fangs.

I read somewhere that cats may be the most efficient hunters in the
animal kingdom. And since plants, for the most part, don't hunt I
guess that means that cats are the most efficient hunters, period.

One look at those teeth and claws and I don't wonder why.

Both very good photos.

I am not saying that they will do that, but the Lx's were sent in a
couple of times for the same thing and finally they just replaced
them. I did send them right to Colorado.I do not think CRIS was
around then and also it may have been a little longer than 15 years.
When the paper went digital, everyone received Nikon D1's after the
Kodak / Nikon digital bodies we had which were very bad with flash
and wrote very slow to the PCMCIA Card. Also there was a Pentax rep
in my area and he was helpful in many ways. Joe

I don't think Pentax will make a habit of replacing bodies that are
off warranty. As Ken notes, I was persistent, and there were a
number of factors that made this somewhat of a special case.CRIS is
the Pentax repair service. They're on the web at criscam.com.

Paul, Glad to hear that Pentax will still replace bodies. About 15

to use the Nikon stuff that the paper supplied to the
photographers, as I had faster glass and more of an assortment. I
still have the letters that came back with the cameras. They came
in brand new boxes also.
But another time they sent me back a Mx body that they could not
repair with a letter stating the fact. They have also repaired my
135 A F1,8 and my 85 A F1.4 and a Super Program.

Paul, Hope it works ok for you..Joe
P.S what is CRIS in case I need them ?

 >> Some of you may recall my bemoaning the fact that my K-5 has
been languishing at CRIS, with the parts necessary to repair it
unavailable. The CRIS folks advised me to talk to Pentax, and I did,
explaining that I shoot for a number of pubs and have a three-day
dawn-to-dusk assignment coming up that I am loathe to attempt with a
single body. I begged for a loaner, and they hemmed and hawed about
how one had to be enrolled in their pro program to get a loaner. I
said I would enroll right that minute, but they countered that it
would take three weeks to approve my application. I worked my way up
through several levels of Pentax employees to no avail. A few days
later, while I was out of the office, someone called and said they
were going to resolve the problem one way or another. I got a name
but had nothing with which to write it down, so I can't say who it
was. The number on my phone from which the call came was a Colorado
area code.. Today, I called CRIS again, and they told me

 that
Pentax was sending a replacement camera. Half an hour later, a
new K-5 arrived at my front door. Witth 35,000 exposures and a
dozen or so movies on my old one, this is a blessing in more ways
than one.

 Thank you Pentax.

Re: OT - Backups & Cockups, Netbooks & MyBooks, Hard Drives &, Dryers

2012-08-01 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting John Coyle :

My Maxtor also played up last month, and I too bought a WD MyBook
replacement!
Fortunately, I don't use any backup software that was mangled by the
WD software, so the
transfer of data was only painful in that about 10% of the image
files were showing bad
reads: I used the old DOS command XCOPY to do the transfer, worked
very well in the
background. I was also lucky (or well enough organised!) to have a
second copy of the
image files so that I was able to replace those that showed bad
reads - nothing lost in

the long run.
The only issue I have now is that another external HDD now gets lost
from My Computer
occasionally and has to be remounted every now and then - possibly
the firmware in the

MyBook is interfering with it, but it's no biggy.

That's started to happen with my 1.5 TB WD external drive. My laptop
won't allocate it a drive letter on boot and I have to go into 'Disk
Management' to allocate a drive letter manually every time I need to
use it.

Not sure if its an OS issue (Vista) or a problem with the drive.

Cheers

The Maxtor now seems to be Ok, and I will use it for temporary file
creation where

necessary: can't rely on it for long term storage, of course.

To all who've responded, thank you for the sympathetic comments. I
guess I was correct to
believe that PDMLers would find data backup to be a topic close to
their own hearts, and

that a saga about it would find interested readers.

Something that I should point out is that the failed drive wasn't
the WD MyBook 1TB, it

was a Maxtor Basics Desktop 500GB which is about three years old.

The WD MyBook is the unit I hold responsible for shutting down my
Clickfree Automatic

Backup, thus initiating my descent into backup hell.

I uncased the Maxtor and tested it in a hard drive dock, and
although spinning and free of
any clicks it was absent from the drive list in 'My Computer'. Disk
Management couldn't
find it either. I took it to a data recovery service for a quote
(not worth $600 for two
months of uninspired unbacked-up work IMO) who said that many
Maxtors Basics have a
firmware fault lying dormant within, just waiting for some little
stimulus like a bad
shutdown to push them over the edge. The fault prevents them from
initializing on

startup. Maxtor users be warned.

This year is the first in my time as a computer user that I've had
any total hard drive
failures, and now I've had two (the Maxtor and my netbook). In the
past one or two of my
drives had developed bad sectors, but remained in service once I'd
run error detection and

mapped the bad sectors out of use.

regards, Anthony

There's going to be a party at my house this weekend, and I'd like

I'm not particularly enamored of preview, though it sort of works,

What I want is program that I can print to a directory, or
directory tree, of jpegs, and have it cycle through them. I'd like
to be able to set the rate, and choose whether to play in random
order, or whatever order they're in the directories.

And, as with everything these days, I don't want to pay for it.

Back when Linux was my primary desktop, there were several image
viewing programs that would do this, but with advanced CRS, I don't
remember their names, and there are, of course, twenty seven million
or so programs with "image" or "view" in their name under Linux.

I especially like the first one. So fierce!

And yeah, all cats have those fangs.

I read somewhere that cats may be the most efficient hunters in the animal

that cats are the most efficient hunters, period.

One look at those teeth and claws and I don't wonder why.

Both very good photos.

Re: London Olympics

2012-08-01 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
A point of clarification: The UK certainly does have a constitution. It is true
that its constitution is not contained in a single document as in the USA.
Rather it can be found in numerous statutes, court decisions, royal
prerogatives, parliamentary convention and treaties.

We've all likely heard of some of the statutes: the Magna Carta, the Act of
Union and the Bill of Rights come to mind.

I realize that the UK has no constitution, but what about "the rights
of Englishmen"?

The American colonies rebelled not because they thought the rights
protecting citizens of England were insufficient, but because they
believed that those right were being denied to colonials. Initially,
at least, they simply wanted to be treated the same as Englishmen back
in the home country were treated.

My apologies, John.

Quite frankly, since I was watching the thing on network TV the thought never

It was a thoughtless moment on my part, one that won't be repeated. If I

it will be very clear from the subject line what I'm up to.

I'm sorry I spoiled your time trial. Apologies to anyone else on the list who

I presume you are referring to NBC's tape delay? That's only for the
evening prime-time show, as far as I know. But the live coverage for
many of the events is at hours which are not PDT-friendly. In any
case, I can't watch everything in real time - that's why I have TiVos.
The broadcasts may be live, but there are multiple channels of coverage.
Even ignoring some of the streams, there are times when I'm recording
three events at once.

I do avoid threads with the words "Olympics" in them until I'm caught
up for the day (which, often, isn't until midnight, if then). But
even though we are both working from home there are times when either
my wife or I can't watch television, and we seem to be averaging more
than 20 hours of recorded coverage a day. Much of it will be skipped
over (I'm not a big fan of beach volleyball, or field hockey).

RE: OT - Backups & Cockups, Netbooks & MyBooks, Hard Drives &, Dryers

2012-08-01 Thread John Coyle
My Maxtor also played up last month, and I too bought a WD MyBook replacement!
Fortunately, I don't use any backup software that was mangled by the WD
software, so the
transfer of data was only painful in that about 10% of the image files were
showing bad
reads: I used the old DOS command XCOPY to do the transfer, worked very well
in the
background. I was also lucky (or well enough organised!) to have a second copy
of the
image files so that I was able to replace those that showed bad reads - nothing
lost in
the long run.
The only issue I have now is that another external HDD now gets lost from My
Computer
occasionally and has to be remounted every now and then - possibly the firmware
in the
MyBook is interfering with it, but it's no biggy.
The Maxtor now seems to be Ok, and I will use it for temporary file creation
where
necessary: can't rely on it for long term storage, of course.

To all who've responded, thank you for the sympathetic comments. I guess I was
correct to
believe that PDMLers would find data backup to be a topic close to their own
hearts, and
that a saga about it would find interested readers.

Something that I should point out is that the failed drive wasn't the WD MyBook
1TB, it
was a Maxtor Basics Desktop 500GB which is about three years old.

The WD MyBook is the unit I hold responsible for shutting down my Clickfree
Automatic
Backup, thus initiating my descent into backup hell.

I uncased the Maxtor and tested it in a hard drive dock, and although spinning
and free of
any clicks it was absent from the drive list in 'My Computer'. Disk Management
couldn't
find it either. I took it to a data recovery service for a quote (not worth
$600 for two
months of uninspired unbacked-up work IMO) who said that many Maxtors Basics
have a
firmware fault lying dormant within, just waiting for some little stimulus like
a bad
shutdown to push them over the edge. The fault prevents them from initializing
on
startup. Maxtor users be warned.

This year is the first in my time as a computer user that I've had any total
hard drive
failures, and now I've had two (the Maxtor and my netbook). In the past one or
two of my
drives had developed bad sectors, but remained in service once I'd run error
detection and
mapped the bad sectors out of use.

the last car I actually owned was an MGB Roadster. Driving it on the open
road on a summer's evening was a wonderful joy, but a joy so rare, and so
costly. Most of my time was spent sitting in traffic jams while the rain
dripped through the so-called roof and even I, Deaf Bob, could hear the rust
eating it like a caterpillar eats a leaf. In the end it would have cost more
to put it right than it would ever be worth, and I simply wasn't getting
that much fun out of it, so I just let the garage keep it for parts.

Moderately frightening .. I had an MGB too. 1965 model year. Frankly,
I hated it although it was nice to drive. When it ran.

In my lifetime, I've built three cars and four motorcycles from the
ground up. I think my junkie status is well assured at this point, and
I never intend to do it again. I bought the SLK specifically so I
don't have to ... It has everything I ever wanted in a car just as it
came from Mercedes.

But of course, I didn't buy it new so I have the joy of detailing it
out anyway. (I'm pretty much done now ... :-)

A long time ago in another lifetime (before I got married) I had the
dubious pleasure of owning a 1938 Harley-Davidson. It was a ragged-ass
collection of greasy worn out parts in several large cardboard cartons
when I bought it, and it was a ragged-ass, greasy, worn out piece of oil
leaking shit when I sold it.

Paid $400 for it, owned it 2 years, actually had it running for about 6
months. Sold it for $400 and was happy not to lose any money on the
deal. Completely stock, because the only customization I could afford to
do in those days was to buy a couple of cans of gold metal-flake &
candy-apple red clear lacquer to paint the tank.

Should have kept the bike and ditched the girlfriend & future ex-wife.

Re: OT: Are all men predisposed to be car junkies?

2012-08-01 Thread Darren Addy
Darn, that's a sad story John! Why must senseless violence be so
senseless (not to mention so violent)?

My MGB Convertible was given to me by my brother-in-law who seemed to
accumulate cars as barter for doing roofing jobs above and beyond the
original quote. Whoever had it started their restoration with the
interior (rather bass-ackwards, if you ask me). The convertible top is
near new also. The body is pretty straight and it has these
ungodly-looking whitewall tires on it (rally wheels, not wires). It
has the "crack of doom" in the top of the driver's door just starting
to emerge after what looks like an earlier repair.

I really don't even know what it needs yet. I know it needs a fuel
pump and I'd want to clean out the gas tank before even trying to
crank it. Beyond that I'm not sure. I doubt that I'm ever going to do
a *full* restoration on it, but I would enjoy having it licensed and
drivable. Our town's annual Cruise Night is a yearly reminder of how
it is just taking up space in my garage.

Re: OT - Rue Brittania

2012-08-01 Thread Darren Addy
John's moaning about Olympics spoilers led me to this highly
entertaining & thought provoking read:
Cocktail Crossfire: Do Olympics Spoilers Ruin Everything?
http://news.yahoo.com/cocktail-crossfire-olympics-spoilers-ruin-everything-210753811.html

Excerpts:
"Yet so many of us other humans are falling victim to the alleged
crimes of the spoiler, enough that The Wall Street Journal published a
piece on how to avoid spoilers (pro tip: Stay off the Internet) and
CNN published a piece written by Justin Peters, who's covering the
Olympics for Slate, called "Confessions of an Olympic Spoiler." He too
gives tips, like STAY OFF THE INTERNET.

And here you are, on the Internet. Is it any wonder you're being
spoiled? But, actually, where we're all spoiled is in expecting this
world of no spoilers. We created the Internet so that we could know
what was going on at all times. We expect people to tweet and say
things. We expect news. Really, we're going to get all upset when that
actually happens, when we see something we didn't want to?

There's another factor at work here, and it is that complaining about
spoilers means that you've put undue importance on one teensy element
of the athletic events and the talent of those participating. Even if
you do know who ultimately wins, don't you still want to watch that
tiny person do backflips across a room to the theme of Phantom of the
Opera? Don't you still want to watch the human whippets of the world,
the sprinters, edge each other out breathlessly, so that you're
breathless too, watching? Or to see the powerful, perfect strokes in
the water from the perfectly muscled swimmers?

Saying that knowing who wins and who loses ruins the whole shebang for
you is like saying you don't want to look at art because you know what
the painting sold for, or that Van Gogh eventually cut his ear off and
died. Are you really the type of person who never reads a book twice,
or more than twice, or who never repeats a movie or TV show to see it
more fully the second time, or just because you enjoyed it so much the
first? If you are, well, you probably like surprise parties too. Let
me tell you: Conclusions are a dime a dozen; what really counts is the
overall quality of the entire story."

Of course, I'm someone who hasn't seen a lick of Olympics and probably
won't before all is said and done. And that includes television/news
highlights. So my viewpoint might be a tiny bit different than John's.

Sheesh! What is it about Pentaxians and MGs? I've got a 1979 MGB
convertible under wraps in the garage, tormenting me for funds to whip
it into drivable condition.

The one in the basement is a 1978, and was drivable until a bunch of
high-school kids vandalized it. I live in a fairly quiet residential
neighborhood. I always kept it in the back of the driveway, but ONE
NIGHT, I needed to park a truck there, and moved the MG out to the street.

Four kids with a baseball bat did $200,000 damage in a little over an
hour. They mostly hit high dollar vehicles, which my MGB definitely
wasn't. About $3,000 of the damage is to my MGB.

One of them lived two blocks away around the corner from my house, and
that's where they started their spree from. Mine was the first vehicle
they attacked.

Basically what it needs is a new windshield, new driver's window and a
complete interior. I can't get the shards of broken glass out of the
upholstery & carpeting.

I have another tourer, 1979, sitting out at my brother's house. I
originally bought it for parts the first time I was rebuilding the 78.

But when I got it towed home, it just too complete to part out. The
engine needs rebuilt, it needs a new cylinder head (they crack between 2
& 3 because of improper torquing) and it's missing the master
cylinder/brake booster.

All of the parts I need are available from Victoria British/Roadster
Factory/Moss Motors if I just had the time, MONEY & energy. I guess I
got the time now.

The only part I ever had a problem getting from them was the smog pump,
and believe it or not, Lucas licensed the design to Toyota, who used it
throughout the 80s. All you have to do to get a rebuilt Toyota unit from
AutoZone to work is shift the mounting bracket 90 degrees (remove 4
nuts, shift & reinstall).

This 1911 Mercedes Model 50 Touring Car was among the first Daimler cars
to wear both the Mercedes name and the three-pointed star. The Mercedes
name came about in 1900 when a French dealer named Emil Jellinek
promised to order a large number of vehicles if Daimler would brand them
Mercedes, a name Mr. Jellinek applied to most of his possessions,
including his daughter. The star came along in 1910 when Paul Daimler,
who took the helm of the company when Gottlieb died, was searching for a
logo to represent the brand. Looking through an old family album he
found a photo of the family home that had been inscribed by his father
with a three-pointed star and an an inscription that read, "From this
house a star shall rise that will bring great fortune to us and our
children." (In its current pubs, Daimler has paraphrased those words, so
old Gottlieb doesn't sound quite so greedy, but according to automotive
historian, Beverly Rae Kimes, the original copy read as indicated
above.)

In any case, by 1911, both Mercedes and the star were featured
prominently on Daimler automobiles.

This Model 50 Five Passenger, with bespoke coachwork by Maythorne &
Sons, was purchased in London 57 years ago by Scott Isquick, who now
resides in Pennsylvania. He and his wife are still enjoying it and have
driven it about 65,000 miles over the years. Not bad for an old
brass-era machine.

It's very similar to what happened to me a few years back with my K20 that was

I've posted a copy of the manual here:

Unfortunately it seems that the "glass bulb" is actually the flash bulb

2012-08-01 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thank you, Bob & Bruce.

The sun was still pretty high in the sky at the time, so I just kind of
positioned myself where the light would be good and waited for the
butterfly to pick a good blossom. I've found that chasing them around
tends to produce a lot of junk. Of course, it helped that there weren't
many other flowers in the immediate vicinity to pull draw it away from me.

More than anything, though, I learned how much I desperately need a 500/4.

Thanks again!

I don't think I'll be getting it back and haven't asked. I wouldn't be

Some of you may recall my bemoaning the fact that my K-5 has been languishing
at CRIS, with the parts necessary to repair it unavailable. The CRIS folks
advised me to talk to Pentax, and I did, explaining that I shoot for a number
of pubs and have a three-day dawn-to-dusk assignment coming up that I am loathe
to attempt with a single body. I begged for a loaner, and they hemmed and hawed
about how one had to be enrolled in their pro program to get a loaner. I said I
would enroll right that minute, but they countered that it would take three
weeks to approve my application. I worked my way up through several levels of
Pentax employees to no avail. A few days later, while I was out of the office,
someone called and said they were going to resolve the problem one way or
another. I got a name but had nothing with which to write it down, so I can't
say who it was. The number on my phone from which the call came was a Colorado
area code.. Today, I called CRIS
again, and they told me that Pentax was sending a replacement camera. Half an
hour later, a new K-5 arrived at my front door. Witth 35,000 exposures and a
dozen or so movies on my old one, this is a blessing in more ways than one.

Thank you Pentax.

avail. On the Mercedes website, they have at long last acknowledged the origin
of the star and rewrite its history blandly: "...he had marked a star above his
own house on a picture postcard of Cologne and Deutz, and had written to his
wife that this star would one day shine over his own factory to symbolize
prosperity."

Thanks Ken. Yes, I covered the St. John's concours for the Times. Great show,
with some fabulous cars. I was, of course, attracted to the odd bits. I did a
brief review and included nine photos with captions, including then and now
pics of the Jag and race day and show day pics of the Porsche. But the Times
auto group is shorthanded this week with everyone on vacation, so they just
pasted up two pics. The readers complained a bit, so I didn't have to:-). It's

I went on a round of that stuff about two months ago, when my partner
asked if I had a small, spare drive that I could afford to give away.
After emptying the cabinet and finding I had 27 hard drives (!) with
capacities from 40G to 320G sitting untouched for at least two years,
I plugged in each one in turn to see if it would boot up. Every single
one of them did. (To keep from losing or mixing up power cords, I tag
and bag them, tagging the drives they go with identically. Happily, I
was sensible when buying all those drives: there are just four types
of power supplies that can interchange across all the drives.)

My experience with WD drives is not great either. But not the drives
themselves, the enclosures. Once I ditched the 2T RAID case and moved
the drives into a third party RAID case, they became completely
reliable.

I don't know what crapware comes on any drive. Any drive I buy I
immediately reformat without looking at what's on it. I have
everything I need to manage drives built into OS X, don't want any of
that junk.

I have a stack of old failed IDE hard-drives waiting to go to the
crusher. Wake County (where I live) has a collection point that takes
old computer hardware & includes secure destruction for old hard-drives.
This discussion prompted me to take a look at them.

Sure enough, all of them are Western Digital.

Plus, now I won't be able to rest until I've pulled out all of my older
USB drives and exercised them, just to make sure none of them has failed
since I last used them.

I've already found that I misplaced one of the power (mains) cords.

Re: Bikers w/o engines

2012-08-01 Thread Don Guthrie
Ah you caught me Anthony, I often see pictures as computer wallpaper and
shoot and crop accordingly thanks for seeing that.

It has been said that one or two blurry pictures are a mistake but
twenty blurry pictures is a style. Thanks again.

Don,

I like your shot and the movement really works for me, much more
important in this case than perfect sharpness. I worried me at first
that the composition was extremely biased to the right, but then I
full screened both my browser and the picture, and the penny dropped.
This picture is a perfect desktop wallpaper for bicycle enthusiasts,
with the important content over to the right where it won't get
covered by icons.

regards, Anthony

RE: Bikers w/o engines

2012-08-01 Thread Don Guthrie
Thanks Frank, This was my 1st attempt at panning and some worked better
than others.

There was quite a variety of bikes and riders and I will post a link to
that collection later.

I'm told that tandems can really fly. Nice panning to catch this one.
Lovely, vibrant colours, too.

Cheers,
