Re: After reading the K5xxx reviews ...
From: Larry Colen A couple of automotive analogies occur to me. First of all, complaining that the K-5 isn't full frame is like complaining that the Corvette doesn't have a V12. It also seems to me that the folks who buy a DSLR based on its automatic features are like people who buy a sports car based on its automatic transmission. (Yes, John, I know) In many ways modern automatic transmissions will outperform even a good driver with a manual transmission, but if I really wanted to get my car around the track in the least amount of time, I'd hire a professional to race it for me. Larry, I find that pretty damn offensive actually. Just so you know. If you want a V12 Corvette with an automatic transmission and a professional driver to race it for you, go for it. If you want the K-5 in any of it's multitude of incarnations, BUY ONE. It's your money, spend it how it pleases you. What you just don't seem to be able to grasp is that I want something different. Don't tell me I'm stupid because I don't want what you want. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Reply interspersed. On 10/31/2012 8:51 PM, Larry Colen wrote: Colin, have you ever developed a new technology product from the initial "customer requirements" to shipping? I did, though it was a software piece. How much time have you spent designing, writing and testing embedded firmware? 100% - it was all software, though it wasn't embedded. As far as I can tell, Hoya cut back development to the absolute bare minimum to keep the company afloat and maximize short term profits, so it would seem that Ricoh has to pretty much start with a clean slate. Sadly it may be very true. Lets look at the K-5. When it comes to low light work, it is absofuckinglutely amazing. In some ways it is close to on par with a D700. The D800 increases the resolution over the D700, but for low light it's not a lot better. The Canon 5d3 is pretty amazing in low light, but either of those cameras cost two, nearly three times what a K-5 does. What was the K-5s one weakness in low light? Focus. And they seem to have addressed that issue. Few points. 1. Why would you want to compare Pentax to Nikon? If your tool gets the job done, why to compare? 2. How much K-5 costed when it was introduced? And how much Canon 6D or Nikon D600 cost now. Heck, just recently you, guys, had a sale (even mentioned by TheOnlinePhotograher.com) where you could buy Canon 5DMk2 together with 24-105/4L for 2.200 of your currency. That's not a shabby proposition... 3. I don't know about cameras of other systems but my K-5 has a tendency to color everything in dark violet when it is dark outside. I'd call that a weakness... I'd love more, smaller, focus points, but that's a much bigger, time consuming, and expensive redesign. Is it really??? Aren't cameras supposed to be somewhat modular like any other modern technological marvels? Yes, autofocus could be a bit quicker, there are improvements that could be made in auto exposure. So, if you are the sort of photographer than just wants to aim the camera and let it make all the decisions and do everything that requires any actual skill, then maybe Pentax isn't the brand for you. Maybe you'd be happier with a Canon point and shoot. Why do I get a feeling that you had a bit of defensive tone here??? Let's say this: 1. If in good light I point my camera somewhere with reasonable accuracy in terms of focal point being directed at where I want it to auto-focus, I expect it to auto-focus just there. Not to the object far behind or another object far in front. You know, Larry, in the user manual of my Ricoh GXR it is written English on white that this camera will always tend to focus on the object closest to it. I cannot express in words how easy it is for me to get proper focus now in terms of accuracy. Because I know what to expect. And pardon me being blunt, why for crying out loud Pentax makes me to have to investigate or research how it's AF works - write it in the fucking manual so that I can read the darn thing. 2. If in good light I point my camera to a simple scene I want to get a reasonably accurate exposure reading. What's the point of auto-exposure if I get not 1% or 5% of bad exposures, but like 90% of them so that I have to be mindful of what specific exposure compensation I have to dial in for each session of shooting. You see, I shot with Nikon D700 on one occasion. In-doors, mixed light sources, not very much light all together. I had D700, 24-70/2.8 and some flash. I used it as insanely big and heavy point-and-shoot. Guess what - I got all my shots in. No focus or exposure problems whatsoever. None, zip, zilch, nada... The only shots I lost where to camera shake or badly chosen moment. If Nikon can develop such a reliable accurate system, then why cannot Pentax? (*) And no, I won't be happier with Canon point and shoot. (*) Clarification: I am talking purely in terms of technology here. On 10/31/2012 9:25 PM, Paul Sorenson wrote: Well said, Larry. I passed up the K-7 in favor of the K-x because of its low light capabilities and am absolutely ecstatic with the K-5. Maybe I'm just too easy to please. Then again, I have a nearly 50 year history with Pentax and can remember Kodachrome at ASA 12 and *High Speed* Ektachrome at ASA 160. That makes getting a useable image at ISO 25000 pretty damn awesome. All the mental masturbation about where Pentax is going doesn't mean a lot when they're still giving us the tools to get the job done. The time to fret about it and start considering which new brand to buy is when they tools they give you don't do the job you need them to do. As for the demise of Pentax, Twain's quote probably applies..."The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." Paul, I think that if you were to have to fix your camera or lens and your local official service would report to you that they did not have a part and your camera or lens hence are irrepairable, then you might think otherwise. Amazingly enough in terms of picture quality the little Ricoh GXR beats my K-5 hands down: 1. It has significantly more accurate metering. 2. It has significantly more tolerance of overexposed areas, so that when the scene I am photographing has areas list by Israeli bright sun and dark shades, I don't have to expose so much to the left as I used to do with K-5. I can even dial in some heavy plus exposure compensation on purpose and get very editable images. 3. It has far better color fidelity and color separation. I can modify one color and the rest won't be affected as much. Although I still am not certain specifically here - whether it is the camera or it is the new editing engine of Lightroom 4.x. 4. Here comes the innovation part. The optimization done between the lens and the sensor in 50mm module is such that the fact that have 4 million lens pixels does not bother me to the slightest in terms of resolution. I don't remember who was it on the list who asked to send them K-5 files with eye brows and eye lashes in them so that they could compare the resolution. The resolution that I get from my camera might actually satisfy that gentleman. Obviously, I don't get a number of features that K-5 offers, both in terms of usability (such as weather sealing) or picture taking (flash or extreme sensor sensitivity), but suffices it so say my FA 31 has been sold because 33/2.5 (the actual denomination of the 50 mm module lens) is just as good except being slower, but somehow I don't see that as a detriment any longer. As for your mention of "mental masturbation". I have to say I think you chose a term a bit too hard or harsh here. I don't pretend to know how to run a company such as Pentax. However I can notice one serious decline of quality control and another such decline in terms of mechanical quality of the cheaper offerings. These are things that unfortunately concern me if I am to keep being Pentax customer. And in my understanding they are in line of direction of "mental masturbation" as you had it called. There simply wasn't enough time (less than a year, including analyzing the business and formulating a plan) to build a "true" Pentax Ricoh camera. What they could do was to finish products already in pipeline, including ones frozen by Hoya (the DA 560mm for example). Please be patient, next year we should see more interesting stuff. Well, you may be right. I mean - it is indeed possible that Ricoh will do way better than Hoya in terms of investing money in the right areas so that next round of products from Pentax will be good. However: 1. Like Larry said - cameras and lenses are just tools. I would add that in a sense they are also toys. 2. Although great many of Pentax users that I happen to know are very loyal (even to the point of being slightly fanatical about that) to their brand of choice of photo gear, it couldn't be said that Pentax reciprocates. Just recently we had a thread about SDM failures. Previously I had an impression that SDM failures were not an issue for this club. But then it turned out that Paul's 60-250 developed this problem. Then Bob chimed in. And then it turned out that we had significantly more cases. And presently my impression is that SDM failures are not figment of imagination of PentaxForums crowd which is deemed hysterical by this community. No matter - it is a technical issue that as rumor has it Pentax resolved. However an official word would have been very helpful here, but none was produced. 3. I cannot help but notice that Pentax lenses get very little mention here. Granted the thread is about cameras, but IMO, Pentax hasn't been really innovating in terms of optical design either. They did produce the new coating - but so what... SMC is good enough. I have two contemporary developed lenses. DA 21/3.2 - and it looses out to my copy of FA 20/2.8 in terms of sharpness at wide aperture. And DA* 16-50/2.8 which is soft towards the corners in a way that just makes me hit my forehead in disbelief - this is the flagship standard fast zoom lens from the manufacturer that just 10 years prior to that was introducing absolutely stellar optics. The DA* 16-50/2.8 is good enough for me, but me is just a very pedestrian amateur. What about more serious photographers? Oh, we have Paul in our midst and Benjamin Kanarek on the PentaxForums who are doing great job with their Pentax gear. However, despite what Paul said I maintain that it is not because of gear they get their fantastic pictures, but because of them being masters of their art. 4. Comparing over last 3 years the products that were introduced to the market by all Pentax competitors large and small alike personally I think that Pentax R&D has been forced into complete halt. Just compare the cameras and lenses that Olympus introduced being under extreme financial dire straits... 5. It is not to say that sky is falling and that my gear will stop working because of that. However, the consequences are that it is not trivial as it used to be to have to fix Pentax gear nowadays. Few people posted here some rather unpleasant stories that happened to them with CRIS or whomever that was. Eventually the issues were resolved, but it was people of USA - the mightiest consumer country of them all. Where I am - I don't want to start thinking about it... The sky is not falling but to say that it is business as usual would be, how to put it, narrow-sighted... Re: After reading the K5xxx reviews ...
For me, it means a better value:price ratio than what I see in the K-5. That's what originally attracted me to Pentax. I'm not knocking the K-5 or the K-5II. I'm just stating that it's not enough of an improvement over what I've already got for me to justify the price. YMMV. From: Steven Desjardins And those core values are? The K5 is an excellent camera for the price. The K30 is probably even better in terms of "per dollar". Weather sealed and most of the K5 IQ with better AF. We are the ones thta have changed. We all harken back tot he days when Pentax released a new body every 5 years but now complain about the 2 year old K5. On Wed, Oct 31, 2012 at 2:36 PM, John Sessoms wrote: From: Mark Roberts I don't understand the fuss. True, the upper-level "prosumer" market (where Pentax top-of-the-line DSLRs have traditionally resided) is moving toward full-frame, but there's no reason to doubt that Pentax will get there. I'm so pleased with the results I get from my K-5 that I have no desire at all to upgrade to either version of the new K-5II. From my perspective, as good as the K-7 & K-5 were, they just didn't offer enough improvement over the K10D to justify the expense. I did eventually find a second-hand K20D at a low enough price to justify buying it and relegating my *ist-D to the closet & letting the K10D become my backup. At this point, the K-5II just looks like Pentax is running in place. The value:cost ratio still isn't there for me. I originally chose Pentax because of the high ratio of value for the dollar it offered. To me, it appears that value:cost ratio has been eroding ever since the MZ-D. Pentax needs to find their direction and return to the core values that made the brand my choice. Well said, Larry. Colin, have you ever developed a new technology product from the initial "customer requirements" to shipping? How much time have you spent designing, writing and testing embedded firmware? As far as I can tell, Hoya cut back development to the absolute bare minimum to keep the company afloat and maximize short term profits, so it would seem that Ricoh has to pretty much start with a clean slate. I'd love more, smaller, focus points, but that's a much bigger, time consuming, and expensive redesign. They needs a new partner -- someone larger than Ricoh -- who is interested in making the company into something great. Perhaps Apple or Google will buy the company and run with it right. Oh sodomize me with a moldy corn dog, the last thing I want is a camera designed by Apple. Apple's forte is in designing pretty, fairly reliable consumer electronics that absolves the user of needing to put any thought whatsoever into using it. Apple products are extremely easy to use, if what you want to do is what Saint Steven of Cupertino thought somebody should want to do. This is great if you want your hand held throughout the process, but try to do something different, and you'll find it difficult when they won't let go of your hand. And, realistically, we, or at least most of us, aren't shooting film any more. We don't need to be able to instantly move any lens from the body loaded with pan-F to the body loaded with Kodachrome 64. And, realistically most people who own several lenses, after a few years also have a couple of camera bodies. You can own multiple systems and tune each, body and lenses, to what they do best at. For hand held low light dance photography, it's damn tough to beat a K-5 with a fast 30ish mm prime. Sure you could get a D800 with a 50/1.4, but you won't have image stabilization, and it'll cost you a damn sight more. If you're shooting video, or you need an insane birding or sports lens, then it seems Canon is the way to go. Why do people seem to forget that cameras are tools, not a religion? And those core values are? The K5 is an excellent camera for the price. The K30 is probably even better in terms of "per dollar". Weather sealed and most of the K5 IQ with better AF. Although I may purchase a K-5IIs as backup to my K-5, I agree with Mark's analysis of the K-5's capabilities and am equally dumbfounded by the discontent expressed here. I believe I mentioned previously that the art directors who labor over covers for Harris Publications 75 newsstand magazine titles wanted to know what camera and lens I was using. (The lens was the DA* 60-250 of course.) They said my images are sharper and more detailed than the vast majority of the work they see, much of which is shot with full frame cameras from the biggies. The photo desk at The New York Times has been very complimentary as well, and I've never seen a Times stringer without a full-frame Nikon or Canon. I take no credit for the sharpness and detail. That's almost exclusively a matter of equipment. Can't wait to show them some pics from the K-5IIs. Of course we all know the camera is crap. It's a Pentax. Re: After reading the K5xxx reviews ...
From: Mark Roberts I don't understand the fuss. Even the notoriously "lukewarm-about-Pentax" DP Review described the K-5 as "arguably the best" of the APS-C cameras. The new models represent worthwhile improvements over the K-5. And they need to do it damn soon. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

unLimited lenses
Yet another philosophical thought... "Limited" is a frequent label for various items with presumed exceptional quality (or just produced in small batches)... Pentax has several "Limited" lenses. I am surprised why Pentax (or somebody else) wouldn't mark one lens (or a family of lenses) "unlimited". That would've been a nice marketing slogan... I wonder if anybody tried to use this idea in the past in other segments of the market. (I am not talking about "unlimited bandwidth" or other similar measurable services, - I am talking about merchandise/gadgets/devices...) RE: After reading the K5xxx reviews ...
I don't think Nikon and Canon does it any better. EOS 7D has not been replaced, but has received a firmware update to sweeten the pill. Nikon D300s is certainly lagging behind and both Nikon and Canon is more or less forcing customer to upgrade camera and lenses to the more expensive 24x36mm system. I still think K-5 and K-5 II is the best aps-c system on the market today. I also strongly believe that either Apple or Google would kill Pentax; photography and gadgets/web content are too different for it to work.
