Great shot!

Do you have the resolution to crop it so that the whale is pretty much in the
upper right corner so that a LOT more of the photo is whale and a lot less is
water and sky?

Cloudy skies and water aren't nearly as interesting as the whale.

I saw the link when it was first posted, I think it's a somewhat

What I don't understand is why changing the OS means changing the user
interface.

The UI/windows manager/shell is just another program on top of the OS.

Microsoft is trying to make a UI that will work on both tablets and desktops.
What it will get is something that doesn't work well on either.

Went back to the fracture clinic yesterday to have it looked at by the

therefore had to reduce it (major ouch!) and I am now in a non-walking cast and
we'll wait two weeks, take more xrays and if the reduction sticks I get a

So now that you have had this lens for a while, how do you think it
compares to the sigma 500? worth the extra money? The sigma looks a
lot smaller, but is also much more optically complex. that pentax lens
looks massive, even collapsed.

Well, that is good to know. I haven't paid any attention to the K-30 but
hopefully this means that future Pentax Ricoh dslr's will have focus
peaking. WOuld be a great boon IMO.

What I do is flower porn, and you can't get a decent shot of something
above your head without a tilting screen (or a down-shot above shoulder
height). Down near the ground makes a huge difference, too, if you're
shooting sideways.

Bring a ladder :-)

Gotcha. That does make the K-01 a little more tempting. I like TAv
because I want to control shutter/aperture without thinking. I spent
yesterday afternoon with a professional photographer [*], and he made
a 13x20 print (on 17x22 paper) of a K-5 shot I took at ISO 6400
because he wanted to see how much camera sensors have changed over the
last few years. You literally can't see any noise (partly because the
glossy paper itself is a bit stippled). There's just no reason to pay
much attention to ISO.

I agree that senors and processing has come a long way, but I would not
agree that there is no reason to pay attention to ISO. While noise is
remarkably restrained at higher ISO's it is still there. If I want it
there that's great (I do still use Rodinal and film, after all), if it
is a necessary compromise I can live with that, but if I can get the
shot without it I will. I shoot snow crystals at ISO 100 or 200 simply
because the noise of higher ISO's would be a distraction. There is not
enough visual "stuff" (signal) to counter the noise. I can see the
difference between ISO 400 and 800 for birds and bugs, but would not
hesitate to go to ISO 800 to get a shutter speed fast enough to freeze
the subject. But I would be very reluctant to shoot nature stuff above
ISO 800, even with the K-5.

There is its format and then there is the book format. A good photo
book format will not favor horizontal over vertical format
photographs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a vertical
formatted photograph. It has no format to "overcome" unless it is
overcoming a predjudice on the part of the presenting format (for
example, our landscape formatted computer monitors that show a
landscape to fuller advantage. A book page can be square and so give
"equal opportunity" to both horizontal and vertical (not to mention
square).

Re: New Japan rumors: 24MP K-3 in April, 645Dii in June

2013-02-21 Thread Bruce Walker
This all brings to mind the often-quoted: The difference between
theory and practice is greater in practice than in theory.

I've pixel-peeped all the K-5IIs hi-rez images I could find, compared
them to the same scene shot on fully-AA'ed machines where available
and have come to the conclusion that the K-5IIs is entirely made of
win. For my purposes shots from the K-5IIs exceed the useful
resolution of the Canon 5d Mk II, a standard in the portrait and
fashion shooting biz. Moire was also a non-issue.

I expect the K-3 (?) 24 Mpx body to have much additional win poured
into it. Martin Dopplebauer's painfully twisted knickers
notwithstanding.

Re: New Japan rumors: 24MP K-3 in April, 645Dii in June

2013-02-21 Thread Bryan Jacoby
I think we're thinking about slightly different things. I agree with
what you say about visible moire, but I'm also thinking about
non-moire aliasing artifacts. These still represent (in my mind at
least) a corruption of the image, but they are not easily visible in
the image (without comparison to reality which people aren't usually
able to do when looking at a photo) and therefore not aesthetically
objectionable. One might say that if they aren't visible they don't
really matter, and that's fine. I'm just pointing out that some of
the perceived detail increase you get from omitting the AA filter
isn't accurate/real, but I realize that some may be willing to pay
that price for sharper looking images.

If the image projected on the sensor (including lens imperfections,
diffraction, camera shake during the exposure, etc.) has the right
amount of blur to be Nyquist sampled by the pixel pitch then you won't
get aliasing, and adding an AA filter might unnecessarily decrease the
resolution by something like sqrt(2). So in that case there would be
no advantage to an AA filter and for all I know that may be a common
situation. Personally, I think I would rather give up a little
resolution to know that I won't be adding artifacts to the image (but
I've never used an AA filter-free camera so this is all theory), so I
hope I'll continue to have that choice as with the K-5 II and IIs.

Nothing in here will be news to you, but I found this recently (via
PetaPixel) and thought it was pretty good (though admittedly it
approaches from the "all artifacts are bad even if you can't see them"
point of view):
http://www.martin-doppelbauer.de/foto/tippstricks/aliasfilter/index.html

P.S. For the record, if anybody wants to give me a Leica with no AA
filter I will not turn it down!

Well, I don't think that's quite right... with good lenses at a sharp
aperture and careful technique, I think you can make use of the sensor
resolution and achieve high detail. But to provoke moire, you need a
pattern with just the right spatial frequency in the same part of the

I agree that it will be a practical problem very rarely given the

another way of saying what you're mostly getting is bigger files, not

Moire already seems to be pretty rare on the K-5 IIs and D800E by most
accounts, and with 24 MP in an APS-C format, it will be even more rare
on the D7100 due to the small pixel pitch. I'd probably be impressed

Re: Windows 8 is Horseshit.

2013-02-21 Thread John Mullan

Bill,

It really isn't as bad as all that. Especially on a laptop. Slide your
finger onto the touchpad from the right to pull up charms, do the same from
the left side to go to the last app, and down from the top to bring up the
menu for the program. Far easier than the hot corners. Windows key and "D"
gets the desktop, Windows key and "X" brings up a useful menu. It is just a
matter of it being different. I have to sell the stuff, so I am becoming
used to it and it really isn't that bad.

OK, so I got that out of the way.
I just bought my wife a new laptop, which unfortunately came with Win 8
installed. To say it licks donkey balls is being both kind to it, and
unkind to donkey balls lickers, who are not so bad when compared to
Windows 8.
It is a crap spewing, drowning us in chunky wet vomit, puerile, golden
shower of an operating system.
I just cannot say enough bad about Windows 8 to get my point across
about just what an abomination it is, and those of you who have been on
this list for more than a bakers dozen years are well aware of just how
much bad stuff I can say about things that annoy me.
I must get rid of it, and soon.

Help me.

Re: New Japan rumors: 24MP K-3 in April, 645Dii in June

2013-02-21 Thread Bryan Jacoby
I am surprised that the D7100 is only being made without an AA filter
(unlike D800/E and K5 II/s). I hope this isn't contagious.

(I suppose the same is true of the 645D, but that's not really a
mainstream product.)

Looking at tablets anybody know the Idea USA 9.7"

2013-02-21 Thread Larry Colen

I went to Fry's at lunch to pick up a Nexus 7. While I was there I
noticed they had a couple of interesting looking Idea USA tablets.
A 9.7" one that seems to have an IPS display and 16G memory for $230
and a 10.1" one with a lesser display and only 8G of memory for $160

these were particularly interesting because they had two USB ports, one
labeled host, video out and an SD card slot.

At a quick glance it looks like the 9.7" with the better display and more
internal memory would be the way to go for an inexpensive gadget for
displaying photos. Does anyone know anything about this unit?

What is this "parting with lenses" of which you speak?

Currently I don't see any way I'd let the 60-250 get away from me, and even
though I haven't used it in a couple of years I hope that I don't need to
reclaim the equity tied up in the 250-600.

But while five years ago I wouldn't have considered getting rid of the FA*
80-200, I haven't used it since I got the 60-250 (and even before that the
50-135 had all but supplanted it).

Re: PDML Photo Annual - Final Week

2013-02-21 Thread Walt
OK, here's the thing: I would've submitted mine by now, but I'm having a
little difficulty with the selection process.

You see, some of my favorite shots are in portrait orientation rather
than landscape. I have some shots in landscape orientation that I like,
too -- but, I can't make up my mind.

Do I take the hit on presentation in the interest of displaying my
favorite images, or do I take advantage of the presentation with
landscape-oriented images that may not necessarily be my favorites?

It's all just too much for me to handle!!!

Ah-ha -- turns out the K-30 has a delay in displaying focus peaking
(about half a second after focusing), so that's why I didn't see it
earlier (because I was rushing it a bit).

What I do is flower porn, and you can't get a decent shot of something
above your head without a tilting screen (or a down-shot above shoulder
height). Down near the ground makes a huge difference, too, if you're
shooting sideways.

Gotcha. That does make the K-01 a little more tempting. I like TAv
because I want to control shutter/aperture without thinking. I spent
yesterday afternoon with a professional photographer [*], and he made a
13x20 print (on 17x22 paper) of a K-5 shot I took at ISO 6400 because he
wanted to see how much camera sensors have changed over the last few
years. You literally can't see any noise (partly because the glossy
paper itself is a bit stippled). There's just no reason to pay much
attention to ISO.

I read somewhere yesterday that HI speed could only be accessed when
shooting jpgs. If you shoot RAW or RAW+, that option is grayed out.
Right now, I have mine set to jpg only & can get it into HI.

My husband called it a brick, too...it is dense. But it felt pretty
light to me compared to the k-5 + 50-135 combo I use frequently. I
don't see myself using big lenses like that on the k-01 too often,
but... never say never.

Looking forward to hearing your impressions...

I didn't have the number memorized, but I guessed correctly.

There's an old joke:

A new prisoner shows up at the prison. Over and over, in the mess
hall, one prisoner would yell a number--"32!"--and everyone else would
laugh. The new guy asks the old-timer next to him what was going on.
"Well, the prison library only has one joke book. We've all been here
long enough to have it memorized, so we just yell out the page
numbers, and everyone knows what joke it is." The new guy decides
he'll give it a try: "53!" The mess hall falls silent. "What's wrong?"
he asks. The old-timer answers, "Well, you didn't tell it right."

Focus peaking makes all the difference. For high magnification where the
DOF is minimal focus peaking provides great data about exactly where the
focal plane is. You can put it right where you need to maximize DOF or
to take a series of shots for stacking (something I have yet to try.)
Without focus peaking live view is helpful but I don't see a significant
improvement in focusing accuracy compared to using the finder. As I said
in my original post, if focus peaking were incorporated into a DSLR's
live view I would not need the K-01.

Also, I find that my macro work is far improved by having an articulated

discovered I was wrong when I went shopping this morning.
I'd love to have an articulated or titling screen but so far have been
able to overcome the absence of one. I don't think it would make a huge
difference in the quality of my work but little things like that add up.

Finally, AFAICT the K-01 doesn't have TAv mode, don't you miss that?
(It's one of the things I'm loving most about the K-5.)
The K-01 has TAv - just set the ISO to auto and set the dial to manual
mode. The screen even says "TAv Mode." If ISO is set to manual then you
are in full manual. Personally, I never shoot in TAv, I use full manual
for most everything.

Don't you mean bull? (Only joking!)

Thanks, Bob (& others). You gave me considerable pleasure trying to recall
my long lost Latin skills.

BTW, where does the cormorant (phalacrocoracis) fit in?

I suspect my little effort is grammatically dubious - it's over 35 years
since I did Latin at school.

Still, I am feeling rather tempted to apply for the vacancy in the
Vatican.

I think I'd be good at writing bulls.

OT - Digital Rev Makes Amends for Supplying 'Used' Camera as NEW

2013-02-21 Thread Bipin Gupta
Thanks James, what a story. The mighty B&H sold me a used K20D with
over 600 shutter actuations as new in April 2009.
I found this out very late when the Pentax Forum released a link to a
web site giving Shutter Count, Camera Manufacturing Date etc, when you
uploaded a photo on their web site.
I wrote to Henry Posner of B&H (co-ordinator with Pentax Forum), but
have not received a satisfactory reply. And I have been buying from
B&H for over (14) years, the last in August 2012.
Regards.

Sorry Steve. I had to clean up the grammar, shorten for brevity, and punctuate.

Mister Bayer
was a purveyor
of style so simple and pure,
though he oft expressed it
t'was found too eclectic
thus his writings remain quite obscure.

V-2

Mister Bayer
was a purveyor
of pills so simple and pure,
though he oft expressed it,
at times was quite hectic,
thus his pain remained a bit dour.
