Excellent gallery Stig Vidar. You must have got up very early in the mornings
to have so few people around, The absence of other PDMLers is noted...

For my galleries I use JAlbum and web space from my ISP. I've got a routine
where I export images from LR using a preset and dump them into a JAlbum
gallery and then use its internal ftp for uploading.
With minimal tweaking I can do it in half an hour. JAlbum is free, but there's
a one-off licence fee (around 30 Euros I think) if you want to remove ads.

I believe you don't K quite F enough; back when I was more involved with
this stuff I think there was one instance (or possibly two) where a zipcode
straddled a state line. But the question would only need to be asked in the
rather unlikely case that such a zipcode was entered.

The situation was mostly caused by local geography; the zipcode I remember
covered a long valley in a very mountainous area; the state boundary ran
roughly down the center of the mountain range, but the extreme end of the
valley crossed into the next state. The only roads to that area, though,
ran up the valley, so it made sense to have the postal delivery area be
based somewhere where there were actual roads leading to the addresses.

It looks like the plane is going west along (and just north of) 105.
http://goo.gl/maps/PfuK9
The reason it is hard to see the northbound 405 is because it is at the
ground level, and thus in the shadow of the 105. But you can clearly see
the interchange from S-bound 405 (from the north) into the westbound
105.

Dan,
I always try to get the window seat while flying. Very few cities
offer interesting photo opportunities on the approach or take-off.

Looks more like the 405, going south toward LAX (with the 105 stretching
east). If that's final approach, the plane would have to be going west,
making that the 105 in the foreground with the 405 stretching south (and
the height of the plane makes this more likely -- I thought the first
option was more likely because I couldn't see the 405 stretching north
and because it's been 3.5 decades since I lived there, before the 105
existed).

redundancy is an important aspect of verifying user input. Something can be
valid but still wrong, so an element of redundancy helps to detect this.
It's particularly important in secure applications. A check digit is a form
of redundancy designed with this in mind, but there's a 1 in 10 chance that
you can get the right one accidentally.

True - it's a pain if you have to scroll far enough to get to a state
that begins with a letter toward the end of the alphabet. OTOH, most
lists will get you in the ballpark by hitting the first letter of the
state you want. I can get to Wisconsin usually with three taps of the "W".

Re: Pentax open box sale in Denver

2013-03-03 Thread John Sessoms

From: Larry Colen

The good news is that I am now working and collecting a paycheck
again.

The not so good news is that the house project I started in October
that should have taken a week or two is still going strong, and keeps
growing. I tried to stop the leaking into the downstairs through one
wall, and ended up rebuilding about eight feet of wall from the
ground up. Once that was done, there were two other leaks, and in
order to solve them we need to do some major digging out under the
house so that the dirt under the house is not piled up higher than
the concrete wall that is supposed to keep groundwater out.

Since I'm working now, I had to hire a contractor to do that. In
order to dig it out, he had to take out the upper half of one of the

putting in beams to support the joists, and posts on real pillars,
sunk into the dirt, so that the house stays up for reasons other than
force of habit.

This project is taking distressingly large bites out of my lens
budget. I'm rather hoping that I can continue putting off the
expense of the project of pouring an actual foundation under one end
of the house. There is a reason I call it the temple of deferred
maintenance.

Although you're right in this particular case, I'm somewhat sympathetic
to the desire for "check digits" in user input (i.e. if user enters
card number different from type you can flash an error -- but that's
really not necessary for credit cards because you're supposed to use
online validation direct to the credit card company). On the gripping
hand, you can do the cross-check locally without pinging the credit card
company which speeds up user response to the error condition.

Similarly, if you're only allowing US addresses, you don't need the state
if you're getting the ZIP codes (ZIP codes cross every single legal
boundary in the US except states AFAIK). But the cross-check is still
useful.

The relevance of this mentality to photography is left as an exercise
for the reader. ;-)

Re: PESO: Breaching Whale

2013-03-03 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for your comments, Aahz, Jack and Bob. The shutter speed was
1/320, and the aperture f7. Because when never knows where the whale
will rise, a bit of DoF is needed, but the speed has to be enough to
stop blur from moving the camera quickly and from the motion of the
whale.

Well as long as we're complaining...

Another *very* common mistake is making the user select their state

The good news is that I am now working and collecting a paycheck again.

The not so good news is that the house project I started in October that should
have taken a week or two is still going strong, and keeps growing. I tried to
stop the leaking into the downstairs through one wall, and ended up rebuilding
about eight feet of wall from the ground up. Once that was done, there were
two other leaks, and in order to solve them we need to do some major digging
out under the house so that the dirt under the house is not piled up higher
than the concrete wall that is supposed to keep groundwater out.

Since I'm working now, I had to hire a contractor to do that. In order to dig
it out, he had to take out the upper half of one of the walls in the apartment
under the house. Once he (or rather Martin, his rent-a-mexican) got a
substantial amount of the dirt dug out, Ray discovered that the posts on piers
that were (in theory) holding up the house, were in reality just hanging from
the joists. He is now putting in beams to support the joists, and posts on
real pillars, sunk into the dirt, so that the house stays up for reasons other
than force of habit.

This project is taking distressingly large bites out of my lens budget. I'm
rather hoping that I can continue putting off the expense of the project of
pouring an actual foundation under one end of the house. There is a reason I
call it the temple of deferred maintenance.

Between my 31/1.8, my 50/2.8 and 90/2.8 macros and my 20/1.8 semi macro I've
pretty much got the functionality of the 35 macro covered, even without putting
on the 16-50. On a related note, I have lamented on more than one occasion the
time that I passed up a 43/1.9 limited because it was too big compared with my
40/2.8.

At $700, they are about twice pain threshold especially when they don't get me
any functionality that I don't already have in other lenses.

It's arguable based on the exact technical approach in use (eg javascript
validation or use of SSL could mitigate the risks) but I do take your point.
The same line of thinking applies to passwords as well.

Banks are becoming quite strict on credit card details and have been insisting
on compliance with the PCI Data Security Standard. When we found out about
this a couple of years ago we did some reading and decided it was better to
hand everything over to a specialist online payment processor. As such we no
longer had to add inputs for the CC details on our systems.

Don't get me started about some of the legacy systems I had to support... :)

Excellent gallery Stig Vidar. You must have got up very early in the
mornings to have so few people around, The absence of other PDMLers is
noted...

For my galleries I use JAlbum and web space from my ISP. I've got a
routine where I export images from LR using a preset and dump them
into a JAlbum gallery and then use its internal ftp for uploading.
With minimal tweaking I can do it in half an hour. JAlbum is free, but
there's a one-off licence fee (around 30 Euros I think) if you want to
remove ads.
