very atmospheric. I've never been to the Caribbean, but I've always fancied

Re: color profiles

2013-03-10 Thread Toine
>From what I learned there are two display devices normal (sRGB) and
wide gamut. My monitor is a wide gamut device. If you load the (Dell)
profile for the device Windows is wide gamut enabled. The same goes
for loading the AdobeRGB profile.
Once I load a wide gamut profile the Chrome browser is displaying two
versions of a sRGB jpg.
Apparently you need a colorimeter to calibrate sRGB and a
spectrophotometer to calibrate wide gamut. I don't understand the
difference (yet).

I set everything to sRGB and disabled wide gamut. Now I see two
identical renderings in Chrome and identical renderings across LR, all
other browser and ipad/iphone.

Me neither... it was a fairly clear day, but cirrus built up on the
western horizon before sunset. The weather will take a turn for the

Re: OT - Broken Ankle Update (good news)

2013-03-10 Thread frank theriault
Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and wishes.

My current position is as a customer service rep (nice words for
"ordertaker") and troubleshooter. Because of the "troubleshooter"
part it is a new position. I think I am well-suited for it due to my
many years as a courier; basically I will be dealing with problem
pick ups and deliveries and resolving them with our clients.

Luckily I live about ten miles or more from the office. Once the
casts are off I will by cyclo-commuting so I certainly will still be
biking. The commute by transit is a bear - I will shave of close to
an hour by biking. Of course the nice thing is that I can still
transit on bad weather days.

After one week at the new position it looks like it could be fun and
interesting.

Thanks again to everyone!

cheers,
frank

Hi!

Adorama (unlike B&H) did accept my PayPal. At USD 470 per module, it was
pretty easy to decide to buy Ricoh GXR A12-28 module, which is very
similar to my 50mm module, except that it has 18.3/f2.5 lens that I
would say is one heck of direct competitor for newly announced Nikon
camera, if just some few hundred bucks cheaper.

Galia got her own Ricoh GXR camera body and now she can shoot with
either of my modules. Since I had to play with 28mm one, she took 50mm...

Her PESO:
http://pentax-ways.blogspot.co.il/2013/03/2013-14-gabrieli.html

Mine:
http://pentax-ways.blogspot.co.il/2013/03/2013-15-saint-peters.html

The jury is still out in terms of how good this lensor is, however it is
amazingly small and convenient (it is shorter than 50mm lensor). The
camera is almost pocketable and all the functions are the same as with
50 mm module - ergonomics is second to none.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the Leica M-mount module and try my
trusty A 50/1.2, FA 43 and FA 77 on it.

I used the term "colorimeter" loosely, meaning a hardware display
calibration tool. A display calibration tool (hardware and software
from Xrite or Colorvision, or similar) would do the right thing
presuming it is compatible with your display.

I suspect that "wide gamut" means 16bit quantization for the display
device rather than 8bit. I've seen this debate on other forums. IMO,
this kind of wide gamut display configuration only makes sense to work
with if you were also working with a high-end printer that could also
image 16bit data quantization on output, and that was your intent. It
doesn't make sense to work on a wide gamut configured display if the
output target is other displays, 99% of which are going to be
configured as 8bit quantization devices.

If you want to be sure to have the right hardware to calibrate and
profile your display for wide gamut setup, be sure to research on the
hardware/software providers' websites and info pages so that you are
certain to get compatible hardware and software for the task. But I
think it is mostly a waste of time. The sRGB profile you've applied
isn't the best one to have for the display, but if it's doing the job
satisfactorily for your needs, life is good.

I think you really need to read a good book on color management first.
Try Real World Color Management by Bruce Fraser, et. al. (ISBN
978-0321267221)

That said, here's some information:

A colorimeter measures only red, green, and blue colors of light (and
calculates color from the ratios), while a spectrophotometer can
measure the intensity of any wavelength of visible light. Either one
can be used for monitor profiling and the advantages/disadvantages of
each aren't relevant to your application: Either should work for you.
A colorimeter will be more affordable.

It sounds as if your monitor can be set to perform as either an sRGB
device or wide-gamut device. Whichever way you set it, you can use
either the manufacturer's supplied profiles or generate your own (with
software and a colorimeter). If you're using a fully color managed
workflow it shouldn't matter which you choose: when you soft-proof you
should be shown a fairly good representation of what your output
device is going to produce.

If you're converting images to sRGB for the web (and you should be)
then they should render properly no matter whether your monitor is set
to sRGB or wide gamut as long as you have the appropriate profile
loaded.

Perhaps earlier you had your monitor set to wide gamut but had the
wide gamut profile loaded (or vice-versa)?

Yes, I do understand the difference between color space and bit depth,
it seems though that they're linked in practical terms. I've only seen
'wide gamut' specs for displays which support greater than 8bit per
component channels, usually 12 or 16 bit.

And I maintain that using device neutral color profiles for a display
device (like sRGB and Adobe RGB) isn't the right thing to do. Use a
color profile which models a particular hardware device at a specific
calibration; it's the only correct way to configure a display for
color managed work.

GESO: Caribbean, Chapter 2 (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands)

2013-03-10 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks Bob, Dan, Bob, Frank et al for checking out my San Juan photos. Bob W -
I think a few weeks island hopping in the Caribbean would be a great trip.
Problem is, any cruises stop only briefly in any one port, usually 0800-1730,
and regular transportation among islands is spotty and expensive, making an
independent itinerary somewhat difficult. But a few days on each of 3 or 4
islands would be a decent compromise. Or you charter a small sailboat (with
crew as needed) . . .

As promised, here is the second installment from our trip. After spending 2 1/2
days in San Juan Puerto Rico, we boarded our cruise ship Sunday afternoon.
Overnight we slooowly proceeded next door to St. Thomas. Meg and I booked a
"scenic overview" tour which lasted through the morning, then wandered the
streets of Charlotte Amalia. A few images from that visit:

Profiling the actual display is the best option for sure but is not
practically available to everyone. The next best option would be to use
a monitor specific pre-defined display profile as the device profile
and lastly simply setting the display to a known standard device
profile such as sRGB and just running with that. Personally I've never
had a great deal of success with factory monitor profiles, I would
assume that the success depends largely on the accuracy and
consistency of factory monitor adjustment.

I would also say that getting a wide gamut monitor before you get
calibration/profiling hardware and software is getting your priorities
wrong, but perhaps that's just me.

Yep. If you're going to do any professional work, even weddings or baby pics,
calibration is absolutely essential. Hell, if you want to make nice prints for
your mom, calibration is essential. Or you could just go the hit an miss method
and burn through a dozen sheets of paper for every print.
