That´s OK. :-)

Putting a picture on the internet and drawing attention toward it everyone has
the right to think what they want and I appreciate it when they tell me. I
have got quite different reactions to this one and I think that is interesting,
but anyway, after 168 pictures I can´t engage everyone all the time.

Yes, they have it: $30 plus shipping to Canada. A couple of others

2013-03-27 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Frank. Although I'm surprised at how soft some of my old long lens shots
were. Today's bodies are steel, and due to fan displeasure, Nascar has gotten
away from the single-shape body template, allowing some manufacturer diversity.
But, yes, even in 1983 the racing was more stock car than today. You have to
go back to the mid sixties for the real thing. That's when Nascar started
slinging rules left and right to prevent one make dominance.

I went to Daytona with Bobby Allison and his crew to do a story for Motor
magazine, a Hearst pub, in February of 1983. Ingersoll Rand sponsored the
trip. While there, I met a Bozell Jacobs exec who handled the IR account.
We talked, and within weeks I had left Hearst for the ad biz. It changed my
life, for the better I think. Today I scanned some of the Kodachromes I shot
in Daytona. The wides were with my Vivitar 20/3.5. The long lens track shots
were with my Vivitar 200/3.5, which I think was showing the effects of having
been wiped with a t-shirt too many times. But it was all a lot of fun.

Pentaxians: Please fill out the OnLandscape camera survey (Tim Parkin)

2013-03-27 Thread Darren Addy
Tim Parkin (who last posted to PDML in July 2012, so may still be a
subscriber) of OnLandscape ( http://www.onlandscape.co.uk )
is conducting a Camera Survey:
http://www.onlandscape.co.uk/2013/03/camera-film-survey/

Despite the form error of putting the Pentax K-5 way down in the
Pentax Compact Camera category, I suggest that all Pentax shooters
make their ownership known by submitting your information. One way to
help prevent the all Canikon coverage in the media is by making your
use of Pentax known. If your model is not listed, there is also an
open field for Camera Not Listed near the bottom of the form. Film
shooters will also find a couple of questions at the bottom.

While we are talking about it, this most recent issue has an article
on ADVANCED USE OF HUE/SATURATION ADJUSTMENTS that may be of
interest to some.
http://www.onlandscape.co.uk/2013/03/saturation-by-colour/
Seeing that (or any) free article requires a log-in (registration is also free).

I might also mention that issues 52-54 are available as PDFs:

Don't know if you have seen this yet or not, but since I know we have
some Nik Software fans around here:

Earlier: Google pulled the*desktop* version of Snapseed the same day
they discontinued Google Reader (torquing a LOT of nerds off).

Today: Google announced every single one of Nik?s desktop plugins in a
single bundle, for just $149. There is also a 15 day trial.

http://connect.dpreview.com/post/4452357456/google-nik-software-plugins

I hadn't seen that, but I got an email from them today for a free
upgrade to the latest versions of the full Nik collection since I'm
already a registered user.

I also got that email on Monday (it was in my spam folder, despite it
being from Google themselves), and downloaded and installed the Mac
Nik Collection. I've been testing it extensively today. All works
fine. Both Viveza and Color FX contain the entire preset collection,
so they are very useful.

A couple of licensing things: the serial number licensing scheme is
gone. Just install it and run, and it is useable from all programs (eg
Ps, Lr, Ps Elements, Aperture, etc.). The old support account logins
where you registered your serial numbers are gone too, so they've
streamlined the entire support process. The plugins are licensed for
two computers now, but I'm not aware that they actually check that.

I'm pretty chuffed that as a result of downloading that free Silver FX
Pro 1.0 copy a few months ago, I now have the entire Nik plugin
collection. Crazy promo/marketing side-effects.:-)

Re: OT Really f*ck*ng annoying.

2013-03-27 Thread John Sessoms

From: P.J. Alling

To make a long story short. The USPS finally did the right thing and
forwarded the package to my local Post Office, and put a delivery notice
in my P.O. Box. I had contacted Adorama to find out how to a. end this
round robin and b. keep it from happening in the future. Adorama didn't
give me an answer, but they did refund the shipping charges, so there's
that. I'm fairly happy with the results, (it was pretty funny in a way,
they shipped my item in a box big enough to hold several hundred of
them), except, I still have no idea which address to give them when I
order again...

Adorama offers USPS priority mail as one of their standard shipping
options, which should allow you to have it shipped directly to your
P.O.Box.

http://www.adorama.com/help/shippingAndDelivery

Their shipping FAQ says they ship to P.O.Boxes and to APO/FPO addresses.
It says allow 6-8 weeks, but I think that really only applies to APO/FPO
addresses.

My experience with having stuff shipped USPS Priority Mail is it's about
the same speed as UPS Ground with the exception that the USPS *does not*
charge extra for Saturday delivery.

Yes, they have it: $30 plus shipping to Canada. A couple of others

But I also found it at Amazon for $23 Canadian, with free shipping.

It takes a standard 12V - 5.5AH gel-cell. I'll bet there's a Canadian

Thanks for the nudge, John. I'd never considered that these might be
standard -- I always assumed some oddball custom thing. But you're
right, it's also used in exit signs and alarm systems.

So I did a search and located a few places around that carry such
SLAs. The average price is still around $30 though. That is, when I
could even see a price. Most places say call for quote. And the ones
that seem to be battery marts are all located inconveniently on the
other side of town.

So I've ordered it through Amazon. I don't mind if it takes a couple
of weeks to arrive. We don't have power glitches all that often
anyway.

But thanks for the suggestion as I'm going to do some more digging and
see if there's a place closer to me. I have two other UPSes that will
likely need replacement batteries soon judging by this one.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Ken.

I tried to focus on the eye of the top fish, but they were moving
around quite rapidly, so I was happy that I got as close to the focus
as I did. The thingies to which you refer are pieces of coral in
the tank. I thought about cloning them out, but I decided that add a
little context to the image. Perhaps however that works for me only
because I know what they are. If I remove them, the image would
become more of an abstract; perhaps it would be better that way.

I like the composition and the patterns in this image. I had mixed
feelings about the shot, however, and didn't post it here until after
it was approved in the PPG. I knew this would be a much tougher
audience.

calibrating multiple screens

2013-03-27 Thread Larry Colen

Years ago, I bought a datacolor spyder 2 express (or whatever the
inexpensive one was) because there was supposed to be software available
to use it on a Linux box. Datacolor explicitly mentioned that they didn't
want their units used on linux and wouldn't help. I eventually gave up,
and bought an iMac.

The software for it specifically prevents using it to calibrate multiple
monitors on the same computer. There are workarounds, but they are a pain
in the ass.

I'm looking to upgrade it to one that will calibrate multiple monitors.
Since datacolor are such dicks about hobbling their hardware to sell more
expensive software, and about linux, I'd rather not buy another product
from them. Not completely opposed, but d on't want to.

Like you, I started with the Spyder II Express. But I knew going in that it
would only calibrate my main monitor, and that its functions were limited.
But at the price it sold for, it was a good buy, and it did a good job. I
recently bought a Spyder IV Pro, and it does a great job on both of my
monitors, with measures of ambient light and screen brightness in addition to
white point, black point and color rendering. You get what you pay for. Some
other calibration devices are more highly rated than Datacolor's, but I have no
complaints. Mj prints are a precise match for what I see on the monitor, and my
clients are always very pleased with the rendering of my photos. In the end,
those are the only things that matter,

Re: Q Macro Test shots - M 50 f4 and Bolt Macro Ring Light

2013-03-27 Thread Mark C
Thanks - I tried the flash in all of the various settings. At first I
thought it was something to do with the Q to K adapter, since installing
a flash forces the camera to the 1/13th second synch. But it happens
with regular Q lenses as well. The ring light works on every other
camera I tired (4 of them) so it must be something about the Q. I
wondered if it is the hotshoe itself on the Q (thinking that maybe the
ringlight wasn't seating properly or something) but I tried a hotshoe
adpater F and it still does not work. An AF360FGZ works just as it
should on the Q so I'm not sure what is going on. Not a big deal since I
would want the continuous ring light to be on continuously for metering
purposes anyhow.

the flash signal actives it. It works on every camera I have except the Q
for some reason. Regular flashes work on the Q so I am stumped for the time

Through the glass! You had me there for a moment - I'm not really into
tropical fish. I initially thought there may be a butterfly farm/enclosure
at the Ocean Centre.

Re: PESO - Passion

2013-03-27 Thread Igor Roshchin

Thanks to all for looking and commenting.

I did some quick masking in LR.
This is more of a proof of concept than the final work: LR masking is
not very good. PS would be better, but I was not close to computer with
that.

What I didn't quite like is that auto-mask option (which would be
useful) produces very fuzzy mask (with pin-holes in it).
That can be seen at a few places at the edges in the photo above, but
it appears much more obviously around the top hands in this verion:

Does anybody know how to use the auto-mask option to avoid those
pin-holes?

Thank you,

Igor

I had just a very quick look over the photos taken during the weekend,
while LR was importing the photos and generating previews.

This is one that caught my eye:
 http://42graphy.org/misc/_IR03768.jpg

I wish the background was a bit moreall blurred.
It was taken with the 77/1.8 at 1.8, ISO 3200, 1/60s, hand-held (as done
 most of the time).
I am also thinking about cloning out the wall clock.

 Thoughts, comments, suggestions are welcome.

 Igor

PS. Taken at the Austin Spring Tango Festival.
