OT - No Bees

2014-04-12 Thread Mark C
I have a tradition of taking a macro shot of honey bees in crocus
flowers, usually in March or early April. It's spring training for a new
bug photography season...

The crocuses in my yard are almost gone - and I have yet to see a single
Apis Mellifera. Bee populations are being decimated due to a several
causes - but it may be that this harsh winter was the final blow for the
locals. It's a troubling development.

Re: 645Z specs

This does seem like a very impressive tool. Earlier today I stumbled
upon the announcement that the full line of 645 FA lenses are also now
being sold in the US - taking the number of new 645 AF lenses sold in
the US from 3 to 16.

http://www.pentaxforums.com/news/fa-series-645-lenses-to-be-sold-in-the-us.html

There was a long period of inaction after Ricoh acquired Pentax that was
daunting - but in the past year they have made huge strides in restoring
the Pentax brand.

You know how, when selecting AF points, you can choose between the

Okay, you knew that, but let's say you select the small cluster of
nine.

Now, did you know that you can move the center of the 9-cluster
around? If you push the 4-way arrows you can shift the cluster up to
the top where -- heavens to goodness! -- it is gathered around the
area of a portrait subject's face when you are holding the camera
vertically. Major win!

Oh gosh. Nice.

Now you can have the best of both worlds: manual selection of AF
points and auto-select of AF point; in this case within a smaller
area.

I guess I would have stumbled on this eventually by reading the
manual, but so far its spine remains uncracked.

Happy focussing!

They put sales on quite often that put the stuff into OK territory. MY
X-Pro1 came with a "free" 35/1.4, the X-T1 came with a "free" battery
grip. and the 14, 23 and 60 all had significant sale price adjustments.
The 56 was full price $$, so one needs to decide if it's worth it, or
just go for the much less expensive 60mm, which is a fine lens, just slower.
The Fuji bodies and lenses all say Made in Japan on them as well. I
wonder if that is causing some premium pricing.

It sure IS nice. I'm in enablement pig heaven right now. I bought the
X-Pro1 and 35/1.4 last year so as to have a faster standard prime, but
still a camera I could mount Pentax glass onto. Last month I picked up
an X-T1 and 23/1.4, a week after that the 60.2.4 and a week after that,
the 56/1.2. I chose a Domke F6, but don't have it yet.
It's a nice system, and if you are someone who wants to use pre A series
lenses, the X-T1 is better than Pentax bodies with the older lenses. The
EVF takes some getting used to. I sort of like it, sort of don't. It
seems really dim in the daylight, but really bright in dimmer light.
It is a battery hog. It is a camera that forces the user to buy third
party batteries.

Okay, you knew that, but let's say you select the small cluster of

Now, did you know that you can move the center of the 9-cluster
around? If you push the 4-way arrows you can shift the cluster up to
the top where -- heavens to goodness! -- it is gathered around the

Now you can have the best of both worlds: manual selection of AF

The Fujis are IMHO overpriced. But at the moment that’s what you pay
for quality as good as any APC-C camera in the world, only half the
size/weight.

In the mirrorless space right at the moment, the Fuji claim to fame is
better ergonomics and wonderful lenses, especially the primes. Reminds
me of some other camera company...

Recovery of corrupted SD card

2014-04-12 Thread Darren Addy
When Ann had her little problem back in December, our own Alban
Bernard (or is it Bernard Alban?) suggested a couple of tools, one of
them being PhotoRec. That didn't really register on me at the time,
and there was no further discussion of it.

However, a recent PetaPixel post is intriguingly entitled "How I Lost
Over a Hundred Photographs to a Corrupted Memory Card, And Got Them
Back" and in that story, the hero is PhotoRec. The beauty of PhotoRec
is that is works cross-platform, so it should be a tool in your
toolbox regardless of whether you are Mac, PC, or Linux.

PetaPixel post:
http://petapixel.com/2014/04/10/lost-hundred-pics-corrupted-memory-card-got-back/

PhotoRec download page: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
PhotoRec step-by-step: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step

Just thought it might bear another look. Shoot digital long enough and
chances are good that you will need it.

There are some Pentax goodies available locally.
#1 If anyone is looking to upgrade to a K7, there is one here that I can get
to you for $350, and that includes the 18-55WR!
But alas it is without the battery charger.
#2 FA50/1.4 -- for a very modest $225.

And of interest, I was chatting with the Zeiss rep today.
They are making no more Pentax mount lenses.
What is out there is all that there will be.
So if you want one better jump on it.

Re: New to me - Fuji X-A1 mirrorless camera

2014-04-12 Thread Tim Bray
I got my new X-T1 yesterday. First fruits:
https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/201x/2014/04/11/Vancouver-Camera-Spring

Same image quality as X-E1, but faster and more convenient, and a
mind-blowing EVF.

It looked like it was going to take a long time to get an X-T1 so I
yanked the X-E1 off the market, the person who offered for it gets
first crack it it, if they don’t want it it’ll be for sale here again.
