Re: OT - Fireworks filmed with a drone
Yeah, its a bit weak for a black sheep video. They've done much better work. They use gopros, so they can't do much about the bad DR really. Much of the point of their videos is to just put drones in interesting places and get unique perspectives. I wouldn't be surprised if the rangers did stop them. They are approached by authorities quite often. On Sat, Jul 5, 2014 at 7:05 PM, John wrote: > I took a look at the black sheep grand canyon video. I don't care much > for their videography. Re: OT - Fireworks filmed with a drone
Yes that's an awesome video, I'd have posted it if you hadn't already :) I'd love to see it in 3D. Drones are fantastic for that kind of purpose. They flew one around the inside of our damaged Cathedral a while ago as it's considered too dangerous to enter. Regarding drone laws things are a bit messy here, not only is the legislation slow to catch up, you also have to deal with the politics of grumpy old men at the Civil Aviation Authority and their mates at Model Flying NZ. http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/10224044/Drone-testing-at-airfield-shot-down (It probably doesn't help that Mr. Simpson has found unwelcome government attention for previous projects) Cheers, Dave On Jul 5, 2014, at 8:35 pm, Attila Boros wrote: > DJI Phantom 2 drone flying very close to the explosions, filming with > a GoPro Hero 3 silver: > > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9KZ3jgbbmI > > I've read some of you are toying with the idea of getting a drone, > this might give you some ideas ;) > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > PDML@pdml.net > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT - Fireworks filmed with a drone
I took a look at the black sheep grand canyon video. I don't care much for their videography. All jump cuts and odd angles make it difficult to really see anything, not to mention a lot of blocked up shadows. It looked like the first half of the video was made just outside the park, to the east along the Colorado River downstream of the Glen Canyon Dam (near Navajo Bridge). I recognized The Vermillion Cliffs in the background. Second part was maybe Bright Angel Point on the North Rim. I recognized the North Rim road coming down from Jacob Lake/Kaibab Village on US 89A. They may have had as much trouble from the rangers for doing "commercial" videography without a permit as they had over using the drones. http://www.nps.gov/grca/parkmgmt/filming.htm On 7/5/2014 10:38 AM, Zos Xavius wrote: I'm surprised the explosion shock waves and ejecting burning material don't interfere with flight more to be honest. Since drones in national parks are now illegal, you'll likely now never see anything like it again. There is undoubtedly risk involved with drones. If it malfunctions and falls out of the sky on someone's head, there's potential for serious injury. The spinning blades carry some serious inertia too. Especially on the larger models. I'm on the fence, because on one hand, a bunch of idiots are going to inevitably buy PVP gear and start flying these things around with no real experience, but on the other, the people that know what they are doing shouldn't really have to have the party ruined for them because of a bunch of morons. Those are lovely, Christine - especially the first three. While appreciating the artistry of the first one, Have to confess I'd like to see it in color - didn't notice the buck until I made the image lots bigger than it first came up. The dragonflies are good! nice placement in the frame and the second one is especially appealing to me as it is an unusual "pose" - I think because most who photograph them strive for the perfect field guide images as money shots. ann On 7/5/2014 15:02, Christine Aguila wrote: Hi Everyone: While no where near the quality of a Mark C. shot, it is the first time a got a mostly sharp dragonfly :-). I wasn't aware of the legal situation on the US. Here you need a flight permit (like if it were an aircraft) and insurance to cover any damages caused by potential malfunctioning of the drone. I'm not aware of anyone who successfully went through the process. One guy posted on his blog that he was trying to obtain insurance, but he couldn't - the brokers didn't knew how to evaluate the risk. To get a flight permit is even more complicated, you need to register your "flying machine" at the Aeronautical Civil Authority first. They can't register just anything that flies, they have a lot of safety regulations, but hey, those were made for actual aircraft, not toys. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: 6x7 Shutter Button
There's likely a good chance eric or someone else has a parts camera that has the pieces you need. You could send him an e-mail with what happened. Another idea, buy a nonworking 6x7 and get the parts you need yourself. This might not be much more than the cost of sending it to someone to fix. 6x7s aren't worth a whole lot these days due to their commonality. Hell functional bodies without the prism are worth about $200 on ebay right now. A parts camera would be cheaper yet. 6x7 Shutter Button
I got inspired to try some macros on film with the 6x7 yesterday - finally using a set of extension rings I ought quite a while ago. I was getting everything set up to get a snap of a zinnia but when I reached for the camera a felt a slight tug and looked down to see that the cable had caught on the edge of a yard chair and it and part of the shutter button were there, while the camera was in my hand... Ack! I have the part of the button that the cable was attached to and also the lock/unlock switch. Does anyone know if there is another piece that goes on the inside to hold it all together? I am thinking of sending it to Eric but I doubt that there are parts available anymore. I looked, but could not find anything else - this happened on my back patio, which is landscape brick, so if there is a part it should be findable. I can't find a schematic on the internet for this part... I can fire the shutter still by poking a small screwdriver into the hole where the button used to be, but I hate to see a thing of beauty hobbled like this Mark -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: OT - Fireworks filmed with a drone
I'm surprised the explosion shock waves and ejecting burning material don't interfere with flight more to be honest. Some of the blasts are quite close. The paradigm shift has already happened. The problem now, at least in the United States, is, will drones become totally illegal for civilians to use in public places? It seems to be that's where things are headed. The FAA has already outright declared that anyone using them commercially will be fined and has done so to the tune of $10,000 at least in one case. If anyone hasn't they should go to youtube and watch some of the black sheep videos. There is one that they filmed over the grand canyon that was pretty decent, thought not their best by any means. DJI Phantom 2 drone flying very close to the explosions, filming with a GoPro Hero 3 silver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9KZ3jgbbmI I've read some of you are toying with the idea of getting a drone, this might give you some ideas ;) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
