The shelter seems to have been there for a good long time: http://theclaydons.org.uk/the-history/photographs-of-botolph-and-east-claydon A bit of googlage tells me it's called the Mushroom Seat, in a village whose bell-tower is called The Mushroom, and whose pub is called the Mushroom Club. It makes me wonder which is the local psychotropic drug of choice. B On 22 Jul 2014, at 06:29, "Chris Mitchell" wrote: >> That has to be the oddest bus stop I've seen. Re: PESO: Sky Plow
Good morning all. Thanks for looking and the comments & critiques from Rick, Paul, Ann, Frank, Ken & Daniel. On this day, the early supercells were degenerating into what they call an MCS (mesoscale convective system) or as chasers call it "a big mess". I was basically giving up on getting any decent pics this day and heading for home. However, even then, it pays to keep your head on a swivel. This shelf cloud/gust front was expanding rapidly toward me behind me and to my left. There was no time to find interesting foreground, which is normally my desire, so all we got was a very nondescript part of Nebraska's landscape and a road that appears to disappear into nothingness under the clouds. The ultrawide is the only lens that can effectively capture this sort of scene. The shape and appearance of the gust front can change minute by minute, and even second by second, so it is a bit of luck to be in the right place at the right time as it overtakes you. PESO 2014 - 172 - GDG
I really enjoy visiting the park on Saturday mornings for my walk. I've been doing it so long now I see the many small changes as they have happened. To the left of this lovely bent tree you can see fencing around one of the larger changes happening ... they're putting in a childrens' play area. Sadly, it's going to destroy the nice view of the winding path that I've captured a few times, and a couple of nice old trees were taken out. This one seems safe, however. https://flic.kr/p/oqwGh8 Thanks for looking! Comments always appreciated. That's a nice tree, but it seems to me that with a playground in the area it represents an unacceptable health and safety hazard. I have therefore issued a tree-straightening ordinance and it will be removed forthwith until corrected, subject of course to further risk assessment. In the meantime, the root hole constitutes an additional hazard, so the playground construction has been temporarily delayed until all of the children likely to use it are of a legally responsible age and have signed formal waivers exculpating the local authority of all responsibility with regard to their tiny persons. Re: Albi
Well done, as usual, Bob. The cathedral is indeed rather ugly, but you managed to find beauty in the surroundings and the details. I especially like the river scene -- very peaceful -- and the shapes and textures in the letter slot and the lion (is/was it a door knocker?). OT: New Jersey Festival of Ballooning
Lots of photo opportunities this weekend at the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, in White House, NJ, just a couple of miles west of my home and easily reachable from the NYC and Philadelphia areas. http://www.balloonfestival.com/ Lots of dramatic and colorful hot air balloons, sky divers, food of all varieties, and many popular music acts. The mass inflations of over 200 balloons start at 6:30 PM Friday, 6:30 AM and PM Saturday, and 6:30 AM Sunday, but the activities continue all weekend long. Lots of interesting photo possibilities among all the people and vendors as well. If you can get out here, I'm sure you will have an enjoyable outing. backpack for "stuff" as well as cameras - Lowepro Fastpack, anyone?
I'm going to be taking a trip with the wife to Washington, DC in late September. I anticipate that it will be many days of walking and biking around, and I'm thinking I might want something more comfortable/convenient than a standard camera bag -- not only because they have just the one strap so they're always hanging off of a shoulder (or over your neck), but also think it might be convenient to be able to carry a windbreaker, or water bottle, or other sundries with me. I don't picture carrying a LOT of camera gear with me - but I do anticipate wanting at least one alternate/telephoto lens for the K5 (16-50 is my daily lens) with me, as well as the P&S and other stuff. NOT a laptop, not a lot of flash gear, not a tripod. Searching around Amazon, I've come across the Lowepro "Fastpack 200" (not the newer 250) and it seems like just the ticket. A bit of camera gear in the bottom section, and "regular stuff" up top. It looks like access to the innards of the bag is relatively straightforward when you need to root around for extra gear (most backpacks make you take them off and lay them carefully on the ground before opening them up), and I like the "quick access" for pulling out the camera/lens combo if you've been walking around with the camera stowed. Re: backpack for "stuff" as well as cameras - Lowepro Fastpack, anyone?
Hi Charles, Sorry, I don't have information about Fastpack 200, but I have used Fastpack 250 since April of 2008 (so it is not too new). Here are my two postings about my first experience with it: https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg444934.html https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg445138.html They contain some of the answers your are looking for. Back then, I was also considering Computrekker, when Jostein wrote his opinion on that one: https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg440026.html Now, let me share with you something that you didn't ask for. Since that, I have discovered Vanguard Up-Rise bags. I bought a "messenger" style Up-Rise 33, but I also saw their analogs of the Fastpack line, and I liked those as well. Here is my impression of Up-Rise 33: http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2013-March/340066.html Today, I would probably have bought Vanguard Up-Rise II 45 or 46, depending on the size need. Here are links for you with nice pictures: http://www.vanguardworld.com/index.php/en/pv/products/photo-video/detail-1-1-247-849.html http://www.vanguardworld.com/index.php/en/pv/products/photo-video/detail-1-1-247-850.html Mind that the "Inside Dimensions" (under "specs") are quoted incorrectly! Look for the correct ones on the B&H website. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/967898-REG/vanguard_up_rise_ii_45_photo_video.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1008819-REG/vanguard_up_rise_ii_46_photo.html/prm/alsVwDtl If this one is too big for you, I would also consider Adaptor series: http://www.vanguardworld.com/index.php/en/pv/products/photo-video/list-1-1-229.html And for a buffier version you may look at Skyborne: http://www.vanguardworld.com/index.php/en/pv/products/photo-video/list-1-1-214.html While I've been a fan of Lowepro quality since 1997, I really enjoy the higher thoughtfulness of the design by Vanguard, at least in my Up-rise 33. The build quality is also very good. The only negative side for my bag I see is how the rain cover is implemented. Essentially, I didn't find a way how you can put it on the bag, and carry it on the shoulder for any long period of time: it tends to get off the bag. This is due to the way how they designed this cover. So, the only reliable way to keep the bag inside the cover while carrying is to hold it under the armpit. However, I am not sure if this would be needed in a light drizzle, only in a substantial rain. I don't how the rain-cover is designed in the backpacks. Cheers, Igor PS. Disclaimer: I am not related to Vanguard company in any way, except for being happy with the quality of their product(s). Re: PESO: Loon Shot(s)
First shot is very nice. Postage stamp worthy. Coulda sworn I saw a loon on a lake here in Kearney, Nebraska a couple weekends ago, but I was in a hurry on my way past and didn't have camera/bigma with me (should keep that with me ALWAYS). Re: Albi
Excellent set Bob. We visited Albi en route for the south of France in the 70s. I was intrigued by it and felt that the brick shithouse of a cathedral was beautiful in its own way. Must go back some time. Re: backpack for "stuff" as well as cameras - Lowepro Fastpack, anyone?
No experience with the Lowepro, but I have a Tamrac Zuma 7 that works well for me. http://tinyurl.com/mu98qud -p On 7/22/2014 9:00 PM, Charles Robinson wrote: I'm going to be taking a trip with the wife to Washington, DC in late September. Has anyone here used these, or anything similar to them? Good? Bad? Re: PESO - The Annual Duckling Shot
Not too bad :) Which lens is that? I rescued three tiny little ducklings from a drain today. They'd fallen through a grate and mother duck wasn't happy about it. Neither was I but I couldn't leave them there. You might ask why we have ducklings down here in July... I suspect it might have something to do with the mild weather we'd had until a couple of weeks ago. Cheers, Dave On Jul 23, 2014, at 3:11 pm, knarf wrote: > Taken about 3 weeks ago. Ahh I know dehydration a bit too well :) I've found that drinking too much too soon will cause me to just pee it all out so instead I'll fill a bottle and sip regularly for the rest of the evening, refilling as needed. When it's really bad it'll take 30 mins to an hour of this for the nausea to go away. > And my habit in France had been to do a full set of stretches morning and > evening, which I didn't do yesterday, so I was woken in the night by severe > leg cramps, which forced me to do the stretches at about 1:30 am. Yes when you're exercising every day the stretches become essential, especially at the end of each session so you did well on your trip. Stretches are best when the muscles are warmed up - I do mine as soon as I get in from my workouts. It sounds like a bit of recovery is in order so I think you might now have an excuse to sit on the couch and watch the Commonwealth Games. And I'm sure that beer probably contains plenty of electrolytes to help those cramping muscles. Maybe add some sodium from a couple of packets of crisps too :D Cheers, Dave -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
