Strange, I'm not able to load that article (I get a blank screen).

In my experience you can set up as many drives as you like as Time Machine
backups, and it'll happily back up to whichever one you plug in, and it'll do
its backup relative to the last backup on that drive. So rotating multiple
drives shouldn't require anything special.

IIRC it used to behave differently but was improved a couple of OS X releases
ago.

Re: Keeping photos on an external drive

2014-11-12 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I use Time Machine to backup everything on my system except my Lightroom
catalogs and photos. For them, I have ChronoSync and a carefully designed set
of synchronizer scripts that archive all my data to two additional, separate,
backup drives. A third backup drive is in rotation with the second on a monthly
basis and is stored off-site.

I only use cloud backup storage for a small fraction of my stuff, mostly for
when I'm traveling.

Re: PESO I get paid to do this!

2014-11-12 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Guys,

Thanks for commenting. I generally do very little in the way of
retouching performance images, generally global changes only like
colour balance, contrast etc. but in this case I also desaturated and
added a little vignette for effect.

So the bright spot I expect is a specular reflection off some stray
glitter, the spot beside her is one of four holes in the wall against
which this (monthly) show is performed. If I was going to display the
images stand-alone I would probably clone it out but if I spent time
on each image it would take me an eternity.

For this shoot I made 1782 exposures using two cameras over 2 hrs
covering 9 acts plus audience shots, I delivered 298 images and found
out that my K5IIs + Soigma 18-35/1.8 will bounce from about 1m without
apparent ill effect.

Cheers,

The horse being in line with that dominant red tree is slightly
uncomfortable, but the fence to the right was not good and it "needed"

a fence. Didn't want to go much to my left due to horse's position.

Re: Peso-Pastoral CA

2014-11-12 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Jack,
I like the golden-fall colors. That's the colors that I used to be
enjoying in October in New England if I could get to that part of the
country at the right time.

(And I would have gone with Agfa film for this, - for the contrast and
nice saturated red.)

I agree with JCO that a vertical crop may work well.
It woulld be a pity to loose the saturated green in the tree on the left
(and on the right). So, that way, it would be a completely different
photo.
In that case I would crop through the middle of the root portion of
the yellow tree and just to the right of its trunk branch. On the left,
I'd go just to left of the vertical branch of the bright yellow tree.

This would give a nice balance between the red and the yellow.

Regards,

Igor

Re: Dad, 1943

2014-11-12 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Paul,
Thank you for sharing this photo!
Very nice photo with a character coming through.

What is interesting to me is that it is also rather representative of
that epoch. I immediately thought that it reminded me of a famous
in the former Soviet Union movie "Two soldiers" with a very popular
Russian actor Mark Bernes. As I just verified it was produced in 1942-1943
and released in 1943.

While there were views that (at least in my memory) would be even more
close to the photo of your dad, here is a photo of Mark Bernes in that
role (it might be even a frame from the movie) that illustrates what
I am talking about:
http://mtdata.ru/u1/photoD42B/20857517004-0/original.jpg

It is not the facial similarities (although there are some), but the
overall style.

Igor

contact print on fiber paper. It's in good shape with just a few cracks

unhappy with the results so I did it again today. It has a broad tonal

Dad was the kindest man I've ever known. Fortunately, he was too old for
combat in 1943 so he worked as a photographer, first at Turner Field and
later at the Pentagon. He probably wouldn't have mad a very good killer,
but he was an excellent photographer and artist. While at Turner Field
he painted a huge mural in the chapel. His murals once decorated a
number of Chicago residences and buildings, including the lobby of the
long-ago-demolished Edgewater Beach Hotel.

Dan,

In India, above the equator, some women have a (dark) dot above the neck
(on the forehead).
In Australia, they have things upside-down, so the dot is below the
neck... (and changed the polarity). ;-)

Rob, nice work.
I agree with others that a dark smudge to her right (actually there is
also the second one, more faint, close to the edge), seems like a spot on
the sensor, and that two white dots on her neck (especially the lower
one) can be retouched.

I use Time Machine as my "local" backup on all my Macs, but I also push up all
of the important data to a cloud backup service (I use CrashPlan - local
company).

"Belt and suspenders". So far, whenever I've needed a backup (such as: I'm at
work and want a copy of a file that is on my home machine), I've been able to
successfully restore to my laptop (Crashplan lets you restore to any of your
machines using the backup from any of the machines as a source). That's (so
far) been a good test and confirmation that I can get my data back when I need
it.

Yes, I'm not suggesting they should be your only copy. Keep a copy at home too.

That reminds me of when I was 17 and had a summer job working in the grounds of
Harrogate Ladies' College, trimming their hedges.

In the headmistress's garden there was a similar hedge which we trimmed
unmistakably into the shape of an erect phallus.

A classic portrait, Paul. Could be a film star. It just shows that equipment
doesn't necessarily make the photographer.

Subject: Dad, 1943

This picture was taken by a U.S. Army Air Forces photographer at Turner
Field, Georgia in 1943. My dad was a photographer at that base and a fellow
worker shot this pic of him on 8x10 film. I have an original contact print
on fiber paper. It’s in good shape with just a few cracks and specs here and
there. I had tried scanning it once before but was unhappy with the results
so I did it again today. It has a broad tonal range so it’s a bit tricky.
Much happier with this scan.

Dad was the kindest man I’ve ever known. Fortunately, he was too old for
combat in 1943 so he worked as a photographer, first at Turner Field and
later at the Pentagon. He probably wouldn’t have mad a very good killer, but
he was an excellent photographer and artist. While at Turner Field he
painted a huge mural in the chapel. His murals once decorated a number of
Chicago residences and buildings, including the lobby of the
long-ago-demolished Edgewater Beach Hotel.
