Built in GPS, that's good.

No more pop up flash, for me, also good to lose the flash of last resort. I
much prefer daylight even if the ISO has to be bumped up, but then use a
dedicated flash/other lighting thereafter.

Pixel shifting, now that's a tricky one. As I understood it, both the camera
and whatever was being photographed had to remain still. Not a problem with
the camera on the tripod, but what about the subject? Or has technology
moved on again and this isn't the problem it was?

Not enough to swap from a K3 - although I might be tempted when they start
selling the last ones at reduced prices ;-)

Thanks for your pleasing remarks on both images, Knarf!
The wading birds are somewhat of a guess on my part, but my best is that the
far wader is a Great Egret.
The two closer darker colored "may" be non-breeding Great gray/blue Herons.(?)
Am always glad to happen upon the White Pelicans. They float about in tight
groups I think of a "rafts."
They have a unique way of feeding by each dipping it's head in a simultaneously
rhythm.

I'll put my Bird Book away now and thank you again for commenting!

Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers

2015-04-21 Thread Mark C
Wow - they have simplified switching the center post to being mounted
sideways. On the 3021 that I have the process of switching to the side
mount is fairly cumbersome, since you have to unscrew the center post,
reconfigure it to be side mounted, and then screw it back together.

When I broke the old tripod and replaced it with the newer 3021 I did
not initially expect to use the center post at a right angle - with just
the head and no center pose the tripod goes right down to ground level.
But after I tried the sideways mounted center post a few times I came to
rely on it - it adds a lot of flexibility to how the camera and lens
can be positioned.

looks like 3021 is very similar to but a bit beefier and taller than
the 3001 BPro i had until yesterday; both can still be found used
pretty easily; i sold mine (good shape, no head) for $60

the Manfrotto 055 and 190 series supersede these, respectively, and
continue the idea of center posts that go to a right angle, though the
new ones make it easier

what strikes me is the the grip-action ballhead you used (as shown in
your photo of your old setup) pretty much obviates the need for a
right angle column, since it extends sideways fairly far and is easy
to reposition

fwiw, on the 3001 i sold, the long portion of the center column is
removable, leaving just a stub and allowing the tripod to go flat to
the ground

That is my old setup - photo taken in 2006 with my old tripod and I think an
*ist-D. But you can see how the tripod collar rotates - in that photo the
mounting plate is perpendicular to the the bottom of the camera.

An L-bracket would help with the 90 degree turns but it is nice to have the
tripod collar that can rotate into any alignment with the tripod head.

Had not seen that view before, so Pentax is putting the GPS module where
the pop up flash used to be. On the other hand Canon removes the built
in GPS from one of their models because no one cared. Honestly, I
sometimes use the pop up flash, but I don't think I've ever missed
having GPS, and if I needed it, an add on device that Pentax already
makes seems like a pretty good option.

Re: K-3II announcement and new FA Limited primes coming...

2015-04-21 Thread Darren Addy
I agree, Dario. I'm curious to see how much the FF camera varies from
the flagship APS-C in size and form factor.
Regardless of whether it is built upon the same casting and body type,
I do expect it to have all of the functionality of the K-3 II but with
the larger sensor. I think it may give up some FPS in burst mode
though, but that is just a guess. It should surpass the K-3 sensor in
dynamic range and high ISO performance.

I think it is neat to see that they've finally built the O-GPS1
functionality into the camera (including AstroTrace) if the leaked
specs are correct. I'd expect that in the full frame, as well.

Hi Eric -

This photo might also be of use:

http://markcassino.com/b2evolution/media/DSCN6186a.jpg

That is my old setup - photo taken in 2006 with my old tripod and I
think an *ist-D. But you can see how the tripod collar rotates - in that
photo the mounting plate is perpendicular to the the bottom of the camera.

An L-bracket would help with the 90 degree turns but it is nice to have
the tripod collar that can rotate into any alignment with the tripod head.

Thanks, Alan. For the wildflowers I set the drive mode to medium or slow

Never mind, Mark. I see that you’ve already done so.

Re: PESO - No Exit?

2015-04-21 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks much Frank, Ann, Dan, and Igor.\!

Dan, I desaturated all the colors except red in LR; the real colors
along that corridor are various shades of bilious green.

Igor, I actually took this on my way home; but yes, it is the grim
route I tread.

Cheers,

Rick

Well seen rendering of the color vs. gray.

This photo is screaming to be used for some demotivators.

K-3II announcement and new FA Limited primes coming...

2015-04-21 Thread Darren Addy
According to asahi man on the Pentax SLR dpreview forums we may get
the announcement on the K-3 II as early as Thursday. He also stated
that the FA Limiteds have been out of production for over 2 years and
that the U.S. is one of the few places that still has stock remaining.
With the forthcoming FF Pentax he says "Of course Pentax will stay
with the Limited Line,so we will see new Limiteds for Fullframe for
sure. More later in the official news."

But first, he says, will be the K-3 II announcement.

PESO: Magnolia Leaves

2015-04-21 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
We have 4 magnolia trees in our yard. Two are more than 30 years old,
rather large and the traditional type that lose all their leaves in
the winter, then bloom profusely in the early spring, before the
leaves emerge. One is a smaller variety, that I planted two years
ago. It loses almost all of its leaves in the winter, but a few
survive in sheltered areas near the base. It also sets buds in early
spring, before the leaves return, but also has a few isolated blooms
that appear in late spring. The third is about 10 years old, and does
not lose its leaves in the winter, although they turn somewhat golden
underneath and brown along the edges. The leaves are quite shiny, as
seen in the below image. This magnolia does not bloom all at once in
early spring, but its blossoms appear in groups of two, three or four
throughout late spring and early summer, and then a few appear even in
the fall.

That is a very strong image. I love the effect of the dominant grey
