The fellow at the reptile centre in Alice Springs pointed out that you have to try pretty hard to be killed by a snake in Australia. The venom may be highly toxic but the snakes have very short fangs so it takes a long time for the venom to get anywhere important, and immobilising the limb buys a lot more time again. They won’t get through clothing so if it’s not too hot, trousers shoes should be all you need. Once you do get medical help they have kits to identify the venom so the correct treatment can be applied. The spiders though… they still scare the crap out of me :) Cheers, Dave -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

FS Friday: AF-540 FGZ flash
It's about 8 years old, I think? It's the original model, not the II. I realized recently that I almost never shoot with flash, since getting the K5. And when I *do* use flash, it's a party camera which the K5 with AF540 definitely is NOT. I've never had any issues with it beyond design limitations. It comes with a soft case (well, I'm looking for it!) and that little round base you'd use if you were standing this up as a slave somewhere. $200 + shipping. Re: PESO: Close Encounters of a Kansas Kind
Thanks Jack. This is one area where film was easier. Just stop down the lens and put it on B and wait until you get a nice zot or two. Digital is trying to capture the moment in real time. This cell was lighting up like a christmas tree, so my strategy was just to just take one image after another (not on Continuous) for a minute or two. This is another reason why a tripod is better, you can see the subject instead of being blind to the moment of exposure due to the mirror flip-up. I had to chimp to see if I had captured anything good. I've got the parts to build what is supposed to be an infrared-activate lightning trigger that plugs in like an external shutter button/intervalometer, but I've yet to dig it out and finish it to see if it helps at all. The electronics fits inside an old compact flash body so mounts in the hot shoe. Need to put finishing that on the To Do list! They sell commercial ones also, but they are pricey. I don't want one that can only do lightning in the dark, but will trigger on lightning in daylight also. GESO: Julian High, 1975 to 1980
I taught English Lit and Composition at a very special place called Percy L. Julian High School from 1975 to 1980. Prior to my years at Julian I had been teaching at one of the worst schools in Chicago — Austin High School — a West Side school that had gone from 100% white to 100% black in a few years. The administration and the largely white staff didn’t know what to do, the school was out of control and on fire frequently and, at one point, the National Guard had to be called in. In 1975 the federal government mandated faculty integration, meaning that if you were a white teacher at a school that had too many white teachers and you wanted to transfer to a school that had too many black teachers, they had to allow you to apply for a position. I had heard about Julian. It was an all-black school on the south side of Chicago. It wasn’t a white school that had re-segregated but rather a brand new school that a prosperous middle class black community had fought for. I applied, the principal approved it, and the largely black staff welcomed me and several other Austin teachers with open arms. I had some great classes and some wonderful kids at Julian. I taught Honors English 3 and a special double-period Humanities class. The kids and I went to the Chicago Symphony, the opera and a number of theatrical presentations. We had a great marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders. All in the mid 70s when the white kids in the suburban schools were thumbing their noses at those kind of things. We also had a fabulous football team, and in 1979 we became the first public school in almost 20 years to win a city championship over the predominantly white catholic league schools. I documented much of my time at Julian on film. I have several thousand transparencies and BW negs that I shot during those five happy years. I’ve just begun scanning some of them. I started with that 1979 football championship, but I have many more that I will eventually scan. In March of 1980 I was offered a job in New York at Hearst Magazine Division. The Chicago Board of Education had run out of money and had stopped paying the teachers. We were on the picket line when I got the call. I crossed the line, walked into the office to turn in my resignation on Thursday afternoon, March 7, 1980 and flew to New York the next morning. I still feel guilty. Today, Julian is still somewhat better than the other Southside Chicago High Schools, but the magic is largely gone. The entire south side of Chicago is a mess. The gangs are in control, and kids are shot on the street every day. A number of Julian kids have been killed on their way home from school. It’s had for me to imagine. It’s heartbreaking. Here are the first of my Julian scans. The way it was 40 years ago. http://photo.net/photodb/folder.tcl?folder_id=1080368 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: GESO: Julian High, 1975 to 1980
Paul, Thank you for sharing your story and the background to your images. I'm sure you know this, but there is no need to feel guilty. I have a great deal of respect for anyone who chooses teaching, and especially for those for whom it is more than merely a job. The 5 years that you were able to impact your students may seem brief to you, but it is 5 years longer than any of us non-teachers can claim. I have no doubt that you are probably still remembered kindly by many of your students, unbeknownst to you. It is even possible that some chose to become teachers themselves, thanks to the impact that you may have had upon them. Your scanning project is probably causing you to relive a lot of memories, and that is one of the things that photography can do best. I'm glad you are preserving and sharing those images and look forward to any future installments that you are kind enough to share with us.
