Re: PESO - Huckleberry Finn!
Rick, You are right. The scene was too contrasty and keeping both the highlight and shadow detail was problematic. On top of this, the two extremes of the tonal range are on the boy. I have recovered the highlights with some success (his curved back); the payoff was loss of shadow detail (on his face). I had made some local adjustments (salvation, really!) on the face. I can perhaps overdo it a bit for screen presentation per your suggestion. I believe the image may allow only a smallish print, if processed correctly. Jets fly overhead at an altitude of five miles. Now consider that a 400mm lens is somewhere between 8 and 12 times the magnification of the naked eye, so 248 miles with a long lens is more like the equivalent of 25 miles with the naked eye. Actually, with that sort of cropping you need about 1500mm with a 24x36 sensor to fill the frame with either the Sun or the Moon. Well, I got it for the equivalent of US$75 on a local web auction. I left it until 2min before closing time & was the only bidder. Not too much interest in old Pentax stuff in SA. The seller was aware of the "indicative market value" which was listed as R5000 (US$375). It was described as "like new, in original packaging" so it may well never have been used. I remember all the discussions here about the potential launch of a Pentax DSLR, the run up to the first sales and the conversations thereafter. Would digital cameras last - durability (I think we're OK with that now)? Would they get updated every other week? Would prices go up or down? Would old digital cameras become worthless? I think the K-3 II is on sale over here at around £749 right now, and the *ist D was c.£1200 on launch. They do get updated, although not every week, and it has to be said in real terms prices have dropped significantly and DSLR technology has gone through the roof. Early cameras aren't worth a lot even in good order, although I wonder in time if they will become collectable, in the same way film cameras are (and have remained items of value for nice examples). The biggest surprise is that in 2015, the *ist D is still a useful camera. We moaned about how long Pentax were dragging their feet to launch a DSLR but we weren't disappointed with what hit the stores. I hope the FF camera has a similar welcome later this year and is a success, even though I don't intend to buy one immediately. I'm going with photographer-ist. Two can play at silly names. Re: OT: Woo Hoo!
That was kind of my point, that most of the support U.S. companies have been criticized for giving Hitler happened before the war. The companies profited from their German subsidiaries in the period between when Britain, France & Germany went to war, but once the U.S. entered the war, they had no actual control over the German subsidiaries. They did kind of gloss over how the German subsidiaries had made profits the U.S. companies collected after the war was over. Re: PESOs: Two composites, one day
Thank for that link, - those are very interesting images, indeed. Motivated by your comment, I was further thinking about photographing distant objects. And I think I realized why our "everyday experience" tells us that it would be impossible. Indeed, 400 km (248 miles) is close to the distance from NYC to Washington DC (~220 miles) and NYC- Boston (~200 miles). But you wouldn't imagine about photographing details of the Empire State Building from the Capitol Hill or Old Post Office Building (DC), or from John Hancock Tower (Boston). The reason is ... the Earth curvature... If the Earth were flat, we should've been able to do that... The horizon from the adult's eye level is just at about 3 miles (4.7 km) And from 1454 feet (443 m) - The tip of the Empire State building, it is about 47 miles. I suspect that this is the reason for our deceived intuition. In addition to that, the air is cleaner in the higher atmosphere (and also less dense) than near the ground level, especially around the big cities. I wouldn't have expected that would be possible. It's sooo cool! Yeah, on the one hand, when the ISS is directly overhead, it's ~400 km up, which is kind of surprisingly close. I think of space as "far away," but the distance is one I could drive in a few hours. On the other hand, if I imagine photographing something man-made from that distance, it is kind of surprising that the shape would be recognizable. Re: PESO - 412
Those look like eyelashes. 412 is for "Red Cherry" color. Marco, that's a nice composition and use of the DOF! The first time I saw it earlier this morning on my phone, I thought if you started shooting some photos for cosmetics advertisements. BTW, the number of numbers on that page is overwhelming: Besides "412", there is "sixteen" and "two thousand fifteen". And "they don't add up". :-) Cheers, Igor Alan C Tue, 01 Sep 2015 06:11:44 -0700 wrote: Interesting & well composed, but what are they? Paint colourant dispensers or lipstick makers?
