Re: Hippos & Crocs (Bob W)

2015-11-12 Thread Bob W-PDML
The remarkable thing about RSA when I was there, in 1998 I think, was how cheap
it was compared to the UK. We lived like royalty.

Ostrich is easily obtainable over here too - there are a few ostrich farms
scattered about the place.

I don't eat meat any more. But you're right about the steak. We had a braai one
evening in the camp where we stayed in Kruger NP and the steaks were colossal
and extremely tasty, among the best I ever had.

You live in a really wonderful country.

Taken from the safety of a car looking down an embankment. Foot safaris with
an armed ranger are available at a price. We still get lions passing through
town. In recent years two horses & a refugee from Mozambique have succumbed.
There was also an amazing case of a young black girl & her little brother
found wandering in Kruger not far from here after their parents had been
killed by lions. On a lighter note, a story about lion sightings in town was
published in the local newspaper to discourage ladies of the night from
certain neighbourhoods.

Re: Deleting folders from Lightroom navigator

2015-11-12 Thread Stanley Halpin
For me, subject-based folder organization is a nuisance at best and a major
pain at worst. I still have several handfuls of folders from my first Optio,
with names like Fall Colors or Ste Marteen. Which would be fine if that fall of
2003 was the only time I ever shot fall colors, or if the spring of 2004 was to
be my only visit ever to Ste Marteen. But when I revisit those subjects, do I
throw those new images in the folders with the old? To me that doesn’t feel
right.

Since those very early days as I became overwhelmed with the proliferation of
folders and sub folders, I have switched to a calendar based system. Every year
has a folder with twelve subfolders. Period. If all else fails, I can look at
the September & October subfolder if I want to find color. The images
themselves are named with a date prefix in a format that is compatible with my
computer’s way of thinking about dates. So if I ever for some reason needed to
look at my images when not in LR,I can just sort my image files by Date and
they will be in chronological order.

When I import to LR, I always not sometimes not occasionally but always apply
broad keywords to the entire set I am importing. Always including the general
area/region and often the town name.Time permitting after importing, and it
usually does, I will go back through and key word subgroups of images with a
bit more precision. I.e., not just Venice, but also Duosodoro.

As I work on a set of images, from a trip or a time frame, I create a
Collection or two to hold subsets of the images. Sometimes Smart Collections
(e.g., all images shot between 9-18-2015 and 10-05-2015 with a rating of 2
Stars or higher), sometimes subject based collections which I load by
dragging-dropping selected images.

All of this isn’t that much work, even for legacy images freshly imported. With
scanned images, I name them according to the date they were taken. Or my best
guess to that date.

So I have LR in front of me. If I want fall colors, I look at my set of
Collections. Nope, haven’t done that one yet. OK, I’ll do a keyword search.
Maybe narrow it down by looking for fall colors shots near home and those in
Michigan’s U.P. I see I am getting mostly October shots; I’ll check September
and November for a few years, just do a quick scroll through to see if there
are some groupings of fall colors I didn’t properly keyword because I was
paying more attention to some detail rather than to the overall context. If I
see some, I quickly keyword them, redo the search. All of this is very quick
and easy and requires only a) a general sense of what events occurred when on
the calendar, and b) a good but not necessarily compulsive keywording process.

You want the AF assist lamp permanently on or off? Go into the menus and
find the AF assist lamp pref, select accordingly.

You want the flash enable or disabled? It's a manual pop-up flash. You
don't want flash even if you pop it up? Go into the menus, find the
pref, select your choice. If using fully auto then it may be on the X30
the flash can pop up by itself - it can't on my X20, it has to be
manually popped up.

BUT - These cameras benefit from an extra facility - a 'silent mode'.
Really it should be called 'stealth mode'. If you find yourself in a
situation where you want to be as quiet and unnoticed as possible while
shooting, then a simple press-and-hold of one button ('DISP/
BACK')enables this mode which disables the pop-up flash, turns off any
shutter noise, and disables the AF assist lamp. To re-enable the camera
as it was before, simply press and hold this button again. This means if
you are shooting at a party with noise and fun, using flash etc, but
then decide some candid shots would be nice without flash and
distracting low-light AF assist lamp etc, one button means you can,
instead of searching menus for these things individually. That's great design.

More than that, it disables the AF assist lamp and the shutter noise.
These things are all turned on/off by a single long press on one button

even just white walls.

Like this shot:
http://off-axis.brucemwalker.com/image/85678223657

At a quick glance everyone says, "okay: a big window camera-left,
right?"

Nope. A big v-flat made of white foamcore with three $50 Neewer flashes
firing into it. One is radio triggered ($20 Cowboy Studios) and the
other two are slaved to the "master". This arrangement can be used to
light up a group of people standing, at f:5.6 ISO 100.

Your black subject on black background is a good example of a tricky
_metering_ situation, but you could easily light that with just window
light. :)

I think you'll enjoy getting into these more interesting photo
challenges. It sure keeps me busy. :)

Thanks Bruce. I have to admit this is something which has caught my
imagination, and I can start with an open mind. I'll take a look around for
the things I need to make a start shortly. I have from a purchase of a job
lot some two or three years ago ended up with about 6 working flashes. They
will be ideal for remote by cord (they are old units) and I have several
reflectors and spare foamboard from print mounting - it's just lights as the
main expense, and I have a place to use this in good weather - I have an
empty 12' x 8' timber shed, which I can practice lighting objects in, with
no fear of people tripping over anything I set up. You have to start
somewhere!

Malcolm

You don't have to have studio strobes to start with. In fact, it might
be easier to learn what you need to learn with continuous lighting. When
I was in school, we started with hot lights. Didn't get to strobes until
the second year.

Nowadays, you don't even need the hot lights.

You can learn a lot using CFL bulbs & cheap clamp-on fixtures. Learn to
vary the light quality & intensity on the subject by moving the lights
around.

Ha!

I spend a lot of time thinking about light Bruce. I really do my best to
avoid artificial light, and I am so pleased that you can bump up ISO a bit
now with the latest cameras, tripods give you longer shutter times and
reflectors are so useful.

However, that has got to change. I read that really difficult subjects to
correctly light for are black objects on black backgrounds; how you light
them gives them their shape and separates them from the background. I'm
going to invest in some lighting equipment nearer the end of the year and
overcome this reluctance to this subject, and give problem lighting
situations a go. Seeing I wait ages for the right light sometimes, the
opportunity to create my own actually sounds a great idea!

Malcolm

Get yourself a good light meter and a copy of "Light Science & Magic" by
Fil Hunter and Paul Fuqua.

Work your way through it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0240812255?*Version*=1&*entries*=0

I have two of this model because I consider them the best combination of
features & cost. It does (reflected) spot & incident light readings,
along with flash, multiple flash (build up exposure using repeated pops
of the strobes) and it does it either connected with a PC cord or cordless.

Most bang for the buck I've seen in a meter, plus it's water resistant.

Sorry for your loss, Paul. You are fortunate to have been loved by and to have
loved such a lovely woman.

At the risk of sounding glib at such a moment a few phrases from a Facebook
post a couple days ago that struck me as right about grief:

"My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and
with that person. And if the scar is deep, so was the loveScars are a
testament that I can love deeply and live deeply and be cut, or even gouged,
and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to loved.”

Listening to Malcolm and Bob, I realized that in fact I do have an organized
catalog, which I arrived at with the help of folks here, after I’d acquired
Lightroom but before I started using. It is exactly what Bob described.
Lightroom assigns images to date-based folders when they are imported. I always
add a short descriptive phrase after the date so that later I have a rough
sense of what’s in each folder just by looking at the name. As Bob points out
this results in an identical structuring of image files in the file system
outside Lightroom.

I was intrigued by Bob’s comment that the point of the catalogue is "to make
multiple independent groups independently of the physical organisation, so that
they are easy to find and to view in different ways.” My first reaction was to
wonder what else he was talking about. Then it occurred to me that there are a
couple other things I do that might qualify: I make q quick pass through the
folder, flagging images not worth saving. Then I make a more careful pass,
assigning a one-star rating to images I want to work with and use that to
create a collection of those images. I then do my editing from within the
collection. In the process anywhere from a few to several images get deleted
from the collection.

I have yet to find tagging helpful. At some point I may do so. If I do, I feel
certain the tagging system will evolve organically, over time, in the process
of tagging. I can’t imagine developing one in the abstract, in advance of using
it.

Re: Peso-Swan Festavile

2015-11-12 Thread Jack Davis
Thanks, Alan!
The resolution in this scene surprised me. It was shot from a considerable
distance and was unexpected. All such wildlife shooting is hand held, but in
this case I was leaning against a fence. Even though it was barbed wire I
was probably gingerly resting the camera on the top wire.(?)
Also, I "never" shoot jpeg, but I had been dinking with B&W and had forgotten
to reset to DNG. I did, however, have the K-3 set set to top res.

Paul, I was saddened to hear of this. I hope that you can take solace
in the fact of your wife's untroubled release.

PESO: Lion Kill

2015-11-12 Thread Alan C
An old male sleeping in the shade after feasting on a young buffalo near
Satara Camp. The carcass has been ripped apart - looks like the hindquarters
above the head. Lions prefer the internal organs, esp. the heart & liver.
This old boy has been ejected from his pride by younger male(s). Scrool for
a close up of his head.

If you ever wanted to be knee deep in crocodiles, this is the place to be.
Hippos & crocs basking in the midday sun - Olifants river

Scroll to see a view of the river at it's current very low level - hardly
flowing, mostly pools.

You have to start
somewhere!

My Wife, Marlene

2015-11-12 Thread Bipin Gupta
It was a blessing Paul that pretty Marlene was with you for 45 beautiful years.
And that she left for her heavenly abode peacefully is God's blessing
and your good deeds.

We pray that the Lord give you strength to bear the great loss and to
help you fill the
emptiness in your life.

May the Force be with you.

PS: That photo of Marlene was pretty endearing. What a wonderful angelic face.
