Interesting subject, but a better image IMO if the foreground snow is cropped
out just below the bushes.

New Bag

2016-01-24 Thread Steve Cottrell
Ages since I posted anything of interest / original - bought a new bag
so thought I would share.

I needed something that could be thrown over a shoulder to give to TV
reporters so they could help lessen my burden on forays more than a few
minutes walk from the truck. Most use medium sized backpacks for this
kind of thing, which is fine. I tend to use Domke Photogs vests as they
have great storage capacity and I can quickly stuff into the pockets a
couple of radio mics and odd bits and bobs. The only thing I can't get
in is a spare camera battery, which is about 6inX6inX4in and weighs
7lbs. Never usually take a spare battery s they tend to last most of the
day, but there have been occasions, and so the spare normally sits in a
small Domke canvas should bag, and I'd normally give that to the
reporter to carry. But there isn't space for anything else in there like
radio mics and bits n bobs. So

Got one of these:

I like the fact that it goes over my left shoulder (if I need to carry
it) and so leaves my right shoulder free for the camera. I normally hate
rucksacks and backpacks, feeling constricted with 2 shoulder straps so
this bypasses that issue.

There's an interesting video showing use:

It arrived yesterday and happy with the design and operation - although
I've adapted it right away for my needs. I cut off the extra strap that
goes around the waist. No time for bits of belt flapping around and
confusing reporters. It works perfectly well without it. Also removed
the neoprene 'lens suspension' thingy and its associated velcro panel
from inside the main compartment. Need an open and clean space for
battery and / or microphones. Was going to remove the tripod flaps but
reasoned it might possibly come in useful for stowing a light jacket,
it's pretty sturdy and will take some weight. When not being worn, it's
possible to stuff the straps into the tripod flap and secure, then carry
handheld as a traditional bag. The strap tidy system works well.

Materials are good, but doesn't look waterproof - would say it was
splash proof. That's fine - if it's that wet when I work, I reduce the
amount of kit anyway. If it was 'LowePro All weather' style it would be
about perfect.

For still photography, it's a minimal kit pack - will take one DSLR body
with medium lens attached, or carry the camera and keep a couple of
lenses in the pack. The extra pocket will take yet another lens or your
lunch! Small zippered pocket on strap really only good for lens caps or
maybe a passport. I would certainly use it for stills forays as it will
easily hold my Fuji mirrorless cameras and some lenses.

No bag covers everything, but for light travels in comfort and as a one-
shoulder sling, this is pretty good. I paid 46 GBP which I thought was a
but steep.

  Cotty

I like that. Works bandolier-style like a Black Rapid strap. Simple shoulder

Re: GESO - Snow

2016-01-24 Thread Christine Aguila
Trust me, I’m impressed enough!

We are very grateful we haven’t, so far (knock on wood), received a lot of
snow. We’ve had some cold days, but nothing really to complain about.

To have cold weather in the winter is to be expected, but what’s been really
interesting about Chicago weather is the summers; we’ve had some very cool
summers. Since Darrel & I rent an apartment and don’t have central air
conditioning, cool summers are an absolute delight! We have an air conditioner
in the bedroom, and I had one in my study, but last summer that one blew, but
with last summer on the cool side, I was able to do without. It would be great
if we are treated to another cool summer in 2016.

Stay safe, Rick!
Cheers, Christine

You pays your money, you takes your choice.

I have a 2011 Defender One Ten i bought with 33k on the clock a year
ago. Running sweet a further 25k later. The design hails from 1949 and
it is estimated that there are 66% of all Land Rovers still running. I
will keep this one now until I'm done driving - say another 20 years or more.

In that time, how many contemporary vehicles would I normally expect to
get through? 3 or 4?

We all choose things that suit ourselves and suit our attitude to the world.

I drive with a smile - always!

Re: New Bag

2016-01-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Cotty, it's an interesting bag, so I got to look at the details. Thank
you!

Just in case, - it looks like the quality of assembly can vary.
Theres are several 1-star reviews (and the comments to them) on Amazon
that tell about certain parts coming apart within the first week:

http://goo.gl/rwPwMe

But you've butchered it, so, maybe you've already cut off what would have
come apart. :-)

By the way, one of the reviews mentions this similar product (which is
also half price of the Case Logic): http://goo.gl/d7Tdgp

But the reviews for that one are a "mixed bag". :-)

Cheers,

Igor

Ages since I posted anything of interest / original - bought a new bag

I paid 46 GBP which I thought was a
but steep.

Far from it!

But now instead of doing a hatchet job myself, I am subcontracting.

I have a Nikkor 17-35/2.8 that a Very Nice Man is going to rip apart,

Not cheap either!

Larry, if you don’t have silica gel readily available, you might try using rice

I still think it's a distraction. It would be better to either clone it

A nipple can often be a distraction. ;-)

"Local asjustments", toning, tanning, or even cloning are all too mild

I propose complete amputation! ;-)

Larry, if you don’t have silica gel readily available, you might try using rice
or popcorn as a moisture absorber.

Pretty cool, Cotty!

I had problems playing the video through, however. I had to play it three times
before all the data was cached and buffered, played smoothly end to end. That's
with Safari on OS X v10.11.2, running through ATT service providing 6.3 Mbps
download speed. It stalled intermittentaly in FireFox too.

That is an excellent image, Rick. The tree shadow is striking and

Nice pair, though the squirrels are my favorite. Territorial
confrontation of just taking a break in the branches? They look exactly
like the fox squirrels that I see everyday - proabbly looking at the
later rendering but the color looks spot on to me. I think squirrel
color patters can vary with locality.

It's a lovely shot. I didn't mean to suggest that the 'solarisation' was an

It's relatively low - must be the server at my ISP. It's not a dedicated
video server. I'll come up with a solution - thanks.

Apologies - not on a specialist video server - just a web hosting server.

I cancelled my professional subscription to Vimeo, and Youtube have a
nasty habit of removing video that looks like it has been done properly!
I might try uploading it to Youtube and see what happens...

Re: PESO Two more from the nature center

2016-01-24 Thread Rick Womer
If they're the same red squirrels that infest the New Hampshire mountains,
they're awful. They have a chattering, mocking call; and as soon as they know
you're not looking they're into your food bag, taking little nibbles from
everything and leaving squirrel shit behind. Bear-proofing the food bag by
hanging it out of reach doesn't faze these rodent spawns of Satan a bit.

=Very= nice pics, Paul; but the subjects would look better dead and stuffed.

Re: Peso-Couple Local Residents

Jack,

I like the snow goose pic a lot--showing all of one bird and just bits of
others is very effective. Pity about the power pylon, but at least it's very
OOF.

The shoveler pic is very nicely done, but not as interesting.

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Peso-Couple Local Residents

2016-01-24 Thread ann sanfedele

Yeah - I agree with RIck..

 - snow goosie with pink "nose" and pink "toes" bookends stands out..
didn't even notice the pylon
My monitor settings actually cropped the photo a bit more and I liked it
that way - leaving the bits of
other geese only to the left and right not the ones on the left most
corners...
