As always, I don't have time or patience to wait out. The big ship was
getting ready for being pulled by smaller (actually quite tiny)
tugboats, as it was going in for landing:-).

I entirely admit that I was fascinated by the contrast of the weather
and human activity, and of course the light and the city. This is the
location that I very often go to when I chance to be in Haifa.
Certainly, if you were to come, I'd take you there too.

It was a rather stormy day all together. And indeed, oftentimes the
changes come from the Med. Sea side, which would be the left on this

Prices 12 years ago...

2016-02-15 Thread Bipin Gupta
My 1st SLR was the iconic Pentax K1000 SE + SMC M 50mm f2 Lens, circa
1978 (38 years ago) for $ 258 with case and a free Pentax SMC UV
Filter.
I bought it from Oldens of New York. The SE had a prism micro collar
with the split image center focus for fine focusing - Made in Japan.

I remember that cold snowy winter night as I took the underground from
New York to Jackson Heights - my precious K1000 tucked deep inside my
Snow Parka so that I would not get mugged.

I got some of the most awesome well exposed shots - at least 29
keepers from a 36 +1 film cassette - the +1 extra shot came from the
careful spooling of the paper lead - sometimes even +2 bonus shots.
Honestly I do not get so many keepers from today's Pentax DSLRs.

And the German Braun flash gave me 90% keepers - simple auto
Thyristor. You set the aperture on the camera as read off from the ISO
& distance scale on the flash. All you had to do now was to keep
firing away as you moved in or out from your subject. The flash's auto
eye would control the flash duration for those perfect shots.
What PTTL or ETTL ??

Regards.

I've been using Open Source Software for about 20 years. Lightroom was
pretty much the first commercial software that I would openly recommend
based on it's price, performance, quality, features and ubiquity. Every
version through LR 5 was noticeably better than the last with
significant "must have" new features.

LR 6 added two features (HDR and panorama merging) that could be really,
really nice, with some simple modifications (like being able to choose
which regions of which frame are used in the final image. Lightroom 6
also added a tremendous amount of suck, from stupid mistakes like having
to re-enter the target directory every time you export to the hard drive
to their rigid enforcement of it only running on two machines at once,
and their making it rather challenging to buy and install the standalone
(non-CC) version.

There are a lot of things that I like about the way they manage the
library, and it would be a pain in the ass to separate my photo catalog
between two different image processing systems, but unless LR7 has a
metric shitload less suck as standard features than LR6, I'll be looking
for a non-adobe photo editor.

Great shot, I love how the wide angle accentuates the shape of the
canoe. The bright glow between the knees of the two people is rather
distracting to me. I'd be tempted to crop to the left of the left most
person and as much off the top as needed to maintain your aspect ratio.
That would also get rid of a lot of empty sky that doesn't really
contribute to the image. You could also, trim a skosh off the left,
leaving just enough of the trunk to frame the image.

Lovely model, great concept.

I'm afraid to say that I think that the shadows might have one this
round. A lot of the shadows are a bit too hard edged for my taste. The
one on the wall behind her when she's standing, in particular.

In a couple others, the ones on her neck and/or shoulder. Mind you, I'm
not saying that I could do better, but I find as a theme those shadows
distract my attention from other, more pleasing aspects of the photos.
In general, they are the shadows from the light on camera left, fairly high

I nearly really like the one with her back to the camera:

but the light seems to flatten out her figure rather than define her
lovely curves. The right leg and arm are nice, but I think there is too
much fill on her hips and butt.

Yeah, people have been spreading the rumour that the official
announcement is going to come on Thursday. I've been skeptical myself.
But it appears, if I'm understanding things correctly, that someone
with connections to the German Ricoh distributor has posted an "Event"
on Facebook for the official K-1 unveiling at 6:00 p.m. (German time)
on Thursday and they give the location as being Pentax Ricoh Imaging
in Hamburg. That's pretty damned specific...

Two more weeks left in the photo submission period. Remember, all you
PDML members are eligible to contribute and we'd love to see your best
shots. Here's the page: http://www.robertstech.com/pdmlbook/upload.php

I have the general theme and design of the book worked out, fonts
selected, etc. and I've even got most of the section divider art done
now. I'm very pleased with how it's looking so far and you'll want to
have your photos featured in this one!

If you're a PDML newbie email me for details.

In general, I like it. It works well, as Dan said, in black and
white. I have two niggles with it. The first one is that the bright
clouds look a bit blown out. The other is that with the ship
centered on the left side the composition feels a bit "off". I
realize that both the clouds and the city at the bottom are part of
what you were aiming to get in the photo, but another crop, without
so much of the clouds at the top might work better.

Re: Boris PESO #06 - Haifa Bay

2016-02-15 Thread Boris Liberman

Larry, this is quite interesting what you say...

1. I deliberately did not max out the contrast, so at to keep all (both
dark and bright) areas of the frame within limits and to prevent
saturation. According to my LightRoom, I have minimal dark saturation
(bottom left) and no bright saturation whatsoever...

2. I see your point about different crop. I was really attracted by the
bright clouds just on to of the towns across the bay and I thought that
although the top half and bottom half of the frame could be considered
as separate pictures, they kind of play together. Again, not arguing,
merely trying to *voice* my reasoning.

*ist-D $1499 + sales tax @ $119.62 = $1618.62

SMCP FA 31/1.8 AL Limited [Black version, special order from Japan]
