I used to volunteer at a library and did a lot of filing of new cards into the
card catalogs. The good old days!

Interesting. I did some googling, and found advice for storing them every
which way — front up, front down, on the side… Looking at pictures of camera
dry cabinets, I see them storing lenses both horizontally and vertically.
Hopefully, the way I have them is ok…

OT: A little extra came with my Photo Lab Index (1939)

2016-03-26 Thread Darren Addy
Was happy to see the 1939 (First Edition) of the Photo Lab Index show
up in my mailbox this morning. It took me a while to notice the 6
pages of typewritten "INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRINTING AND PROCESSING ANSCO
COLOR PAPER" folded in half inside the back cover. What I found
interesting was what the previous owner had written (multiple times)
on the back of the folded instructions:

PHOTOGRAPHER
Have your Portrait made.
Greenbelt-5846
2-R-London

According to Google Books, "Ansco Color Paper" was called "a worthy
newcomer" in a 1942 Journal of Photographic Society of America.
Interestingly, the instructions refer to how it "may be printed from
the usual black-and-white separation negatives or the more recently
available complementary color negatives." Perhaps not coincidentally,
1942 was also the year that Kodak introduced Kodacolor, "the first
color film that yields negatives for making chromogenic color prints
on paper. Roll films for snapshot cameras only, 35 mm not available
until 1958".

Therefore it appears that a (the?) previous owner of my book was a
Londoner and he penciled his (not so creative) advertisement (which
appears to me to be sort of an aspiration) not very long after the
London Blitz ended (May 1941).

I'm not sure what the 2-R designation before "London" means. But it
appears that Green Belt refers to an area known as "The Metropolitan
Green Belt" which, around London, was first proposed by the Greater
London Regional Planning Committee in 1935.

It makes me wonder who this PHOTOGRAPHER was and if he (the penmanship
appears to be masculine) ever got to place his ad and take Londoner's
portraits.

I worked in a large library before the days of PC's and developed a
great fondness for card catalogs. Kept the scrolls and clay tablets
nicely organized :-)

But - I've always heard that lenses should be stored vertically because
that keeps the grease from settling on one side of the aperture, zoom
and/or focus mechanisms. I may be wrong on that but you might want to

Interesting combination of shapes and nicely composed. A bit gritty for
my taste but still very appealing.

If you spring for the Pen F, I'd be interested in your assessment.

Lens Storage

2016-03-26 Thread Nicole Jacque
A while back, I was trying to find a better way to store my lenses and other
gear at home, and I am pretty pleased to find I was able to use something I
already owned. An old card catalog works quite nicely!

https://flic.kr/s/aHskwr4FcA

(Note: Most of those are Pentax, but there are a few Nikon in the left-most
drawer. Quite a few of the lenses shown here belong to Larry, but I have
started to accumulate my own at an alarming rate.)

Re: PESO Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal

2016-03-26 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Nicole,

About 30 feet I’d guess. I shot with the 150-450 and 1,4x converter, so it was
about 630mm. I put my tripod out about an hour before I want to shoot so the
birds get used to seeing it, then carefully mount the camera ten minutes of so
before I start shooting. I sit there sipping scotch until the birds show up. I
try to become part of the environment.

Best,
Paul

Re: PESO - Fields, Richard's Castle, Shropshire 2016

2016-03-26 Thread ann sanfedele

Interesting... and not so surprising to me- as I tried that when I first
got a digital camera that allowed me to switch...but I couldn't rely on
remembering to
switchbetween the two changing something in the camera... not to mention
not being able to decidewhich I preferred on the spot. Was so glad to
see I could do it post shooting..

but but, when I shot tri-x, as I did for almost 50 years in additionto
agfa or Kodachrome,
my eyes still saw the color... although I would sometimes envision the
scene in BW, it
is what I saw - before I picked up the camera that determined my desire
to photo it.

I carried two cameras with me all the time when travelling, and taking
the one with
tri-x in it when I was just coming and going in the city... about half
of what I saw

back in the day was shot in both when possible...

I got in to trouble back then sometimes , grabbing the wrong camera at
times - though I
did put the names of the camera on the backs of each - Bubba was for
color,and Sam was for

Tri-x.

did you, back in fil days, always have a yellow or orange filter - or
even red, so when you
looked through the lens you got a monochrome and the contrast that it
brought out?

me did.

What does the color look like? Just curious

An interesting question my dear. When I shoot mono, I have the camera
set to mono jpeg, so in fact I can't tell you about the colour version
as it doesn't exist.

I tried shooting colour and converting later to mono, early on in my
digital photo experiences but couldn't get to grips with it. I found
that, much like shooting actual film, I had to know what I had in the
camera and then shoot to that end. If I had FP4 in the camera then I was
looking at some nice detailed mono work. HP5 and gritty street pics.
Kodachrome and fill the frame with deep hues.

I've carried that theme on into digital. I tend to shoot more and more
mono now than colour - about 75% of my efforts I'd say.

Horses for course :-)

Thanks for looking XX

Thanks for the feedback! I agree, unfortunately, most of those weren’t
intentional crops — they were just what I was able to catch, what with people
moving around, and I had to work with what I could get with my 50mm prime, as
it is the fastest lens I have. Oh, how I was wishing for a faster lens!

Re: Google's entire Nik Collection now FREE

2016-03-26 Thread Christine Aguila
I got it to work after changing external editor in preferences. I’ll have to
change it every time I want to use a specific app—the Nik collection is not
showing up in the “edit in” option under photo. Not worried about it. I’ll
just deal with it. Edited photo saves nicely next to the original photo in my
Lightroom photo strip/photo library, so I’m good to go.

Bye the bye—there are updates for Lightroom—I’m using version 6.5—just FYI.
Cheers, Christine

I played with my camera on the way home from the dojo a few nights
ago. I mostly determined that I need to find some sharp, fast, wide
glass, preferably one that I can afford. The 31 was neither fast, nor
wide, enough for the shot that I wanted to get of trees sticking up
through the fog.

This shot with the 8mm Samyang has been getting some attention on
flickr, and it does lend to some interesting geometry.

What is so interesting here is that the mounds don't look raised... I
think it would be
as interesting , but in a different way, with some of the foreground
snipped for a more

traditional landscape framing and bringing the mounds "closer" to viewer...
maybe. :-)

What does the color look like? Just curious

misc, more or less in time date order.

The ducks are in the Lily pad pond at the Botanical Garden.. I don't
know what the hoops are for either... I just thought it
was cute that the ducks found them useful and amusing that mr and mrs
didn't share :-)

Maybe the hoops contain the water lilies that are usually there to
maintain a certain design? I should ask next time

I'm there.
