Re: Shake reduction - Doh! (And PESO - heron?)

2016-05-16 Thread Alan C
They don't look too bad to me, Igor. I wonder if setting the FL would have
made much difference?

I recently took some shots of a Saddlebill Stork & chick using my HD 55-300
without & with the 1.7x AF. I set the FL to 500mm. The range is about 80m.
The shot with the 1.7x is cropped less than the one without & is definitely
a bit degraded. It makes me wonder if TC's really work.

Doh!
https://goo.gl/AeVZis

I keep forgetting that SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter is seen as an "A" type
of lens by the camera, and no information about the focal length is
transmitted to the camera.

Since my only "A"-type of lens used (not counting converters) is the
Samyang's 8mm-fisheye, it is what remains set for the focal length for the
shake reduction.
Today, I saw a bird (heron or crane?) in our subdivision (or heron?), and
came to photograph it. I put the 1.7 adapter in front of the 60-250 lens,
but forgot to dial for the SR.

While I had to shoot while holding the camera, I was relying in
part on the SR. The result is underwhelming...
... and now I am recalling that I've head this happening to me about a
year ago.
   Doh!

BTW, maybe the resident experts could tell me if this is a heron (grey
heron?) or something else?

The first photo is ok as it was taken without the adapter:

Here is the best of those taken with the adapter:

With the K-3 I shot at 450mm with the 1.4 x converter, about 630mm, but from
much further away. The sparrow pic is at 380mm, but as I said, the K-1 pics are
handheld. Making it all work handheld from a bench near my feeder has been a
goal. It's more entertaining for me. It's also a bit harder to locate focus on
the bird's head.

The AF indoors with this lens on the K1 was just fine. I didn't try it on
 any other cameras.
I'm going to enable you a little bit here. If you use manual focus a lot,
the K1 is definitely a much improved camera over the K3 (I can't speak to
the K3II). For manual focus, the K1 is definitely in a class of it's own
due to the focus assists that are built in.

Another nothing shot, but the AF was in center point, I suspect it focused
 on the far wall.

My copy of the PDML 2016 Annual made it through the induction process and was
delivered today. ’Tis a thing of beauty and a wonder to behold! Thanks Mark and
also your able helpers. Nice clean layout, excellent images well printed. This
is a book well worth buying and anyone who hasn’t purchased one yet should
think about getting two or three extra when they do order. Christmas is only a

You know, I had the talk with my husband last night:

not the one where you casually mention, while he’s reading the paper, how a
specific piece of kit just came out, and you wax it’s virtues, then casually
and most strategically dismiss it by saying, “well, maybe down the road”;

nor the one (which comes two weeks later) where you mention how said kit would
be really great to address some specific shooting situation you plan to
experience in the near future;

and nor the one where you come home (three weeks later) with said piece of kit
and you proceed to rationalize your purchase with arguments so persuasive even
Aristotle would be impressed.

No, not any of those.

The other one, where you begin while cuddled under the blankets after a good
day of married life, and he’s just about ready to slip off dreaming how lucky
he is to have a wife who made him his favorite meal and served it with his
favorite ale—

The one where you begin: “Honey, do you know what a full frame camera is?”

Yes, that one, which is not just about another camera body, but rather about a
new trajectory in camera equipment enablement. The one where you do your best
to load him down with technical explanations so expert you make him dizzy, and
you do this when his desire for blissful sleep is high, yet because he’s a good
husband, he’s trying hang on and take an interest. But, of course, he can’t
hang on any longer as you prattle on, and you hear him slipping into dreamland
saying, “Sounds like a good plan, dear. Can’t wait to see the pictures.”

Then the two of you drift off into a very lovely sleep.

Cheers, Christine

If I were going to be transgender, I'd have to become Joan. But I'm not.

Straight, but not narrow, that's me ... "different strokes for different

For all the attention North Carolina's HB2 law has gotten for who gets
to use what bathroom, that's not the worst part of the law. There's
other parts of the law that haven't really gotten the attention it
deserves. Like closing off state courts to discrimination complaints
from everyone, regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation,
national origin, age, religious affiliation ... it's Jim Crow on steroids.

There is one other John in my Tuesday night group. No Larrys ... no
Darrel or other brother Darrel. We've got a Donald (went by Don even

If any of them is LGBT, I don't know about it and care even less. Not my

I'm going to enable you a little bit here. If you use manual focus a lot, the

focus assists that are built in.

and nor the one where you come home (three weeks later) with said piece of kit
and you proceed to rationalize your purchase with arguments so persuasive even

No, not any of those.

Yes, that one, which is not just about another camera body, but rather about a

you do this when his desire for blissful sleep is high, yet because he’s a good

You know, I had the talk with my husband last night:

not the one where you casually mention, while he’s reading the paper, how a
specific piece of kit just came out, and you wax it’s virtues, then casually
and most strategically dismiss it by saying, “well, maybe down the road”;

nor the one (which comes two weeks later) where you mention how said kit would
be really great to address some specific shooting situation you plan to
experience in the near future;

and nor the one where you come home (three weeks later) with said piece of kit
and you proceed to rationalize your purchase with arguments so persuasive even
Aristotle would be impressed.

PESO 2016 - 090 - GDG

2016-05-16 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Finally had a few moments on Sunday to take my new camera out of the box,
charge it up, and snap a couple of test shots with it. First posted shot:

  https://flic.kr/p/Gi947X

The camera is the brand-new Impossible Project I-1, the first all-NEW instant
film camera using the classic Polaroid SX-70 film format in over 20 years. The
film used for this was Impossible's 600 Color v3, an outdated pack of beta
release 1 from last April that was lying about waiting to be used up. The
results with this awesome little camera are amazingly good considering the
outdated, pre-release film … Can't wait to see how it does with some final
quality, fresh film!

The camera has a well-thought-out design and is very innovative. It's going to
be lots of fun to make photos with!
I am happy… :-)

enjoy,
G

The trouble with being punctual is that nobody's there to appreciate it.

2. On tripod, Liveview with focus peaking, no problem. Through the viewfinder,
the in-focus indicator seems accurate.

3. With the A-200/4 paired with the F-1.7x I got major purple fringing. With

Re: Couple of questions about the K-1

2016-05-16 Thread Paul Stenquist
The viewfinder is noticeably bigger than the APSc cameras but not as big as the
LX.

I find it easy to focus the A50 1.2. Haven't tried my other lenses yet. The
in-focus indicator light seems very accurate. It's activated with the shutter
held halfway down. It may be as accurate as autofocus.

Here's a full-res shot with the A50 1.2. It's at 5.6 and meant to be a test of
the camera rather than the wide open capability of the lens.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/2ilwl5k8uoc4s63/0637.hr.jpg?dl=0

The camera has a hot shoe and it worked very well with my 540 flash this
weekend.
