Thank you, Paul, Jack, Ann, and Paul, for your response and suggestions. Your unanimous vote actually coincides with my own preference. I am somewhat surprised nobody has picked any of the B&W renditions. Paul and Jack: I will try to see how it looks with the left side cropped. I can see how that would make the paved walkway to look symmetric. But at the moment, I am not sure that would yield a good placement for the kid within the frame. Re: OT - Transmission Replacement - Re manufactured vs Used
I've stayed out of this until now because others have answered questions about the CVT transmission better than I can. BUT ... just from personal experience, any warranty on the "reman" transmission will expire before the transmission fails again. A good clean "used" transmission from a wreck will probably last that long as well. An alternative not yet mentioned - if you have the mechanical skills - get a $500 beater as temporary transportation, buy the Haynes manual and rebuild the transmission yourself. At least then you'd know the quality of the work that went into it. On 5/29/2016 6:36 PM, Mark C wrote: Just so I understand - you're saying get a used CVT, have someone go into it and look for common faults and repair as needed before installing. Right? Interesting option - I might raise that with the shop that would install a used unit. My thought now, though, would be to try to narrow the gap between a used and a factory reman and the used CVT. The concerns that I have with the approach you are suggesting would be that it would add to the cost of a used unit and also could create warranty issues. Who would offer a warranty on the CVT - the original parts seller or the person who checks and repairs it? But this approach does address the worries I'd have with a used unit. Re: PESO: True Romance
Thanks, Boris. Athens is covered by graffiti, much of it quite rude, in Greek and in English. This building had both graffiti and posters, some of them covered with graffiti. In this image, my son is reading a poster saying "I am giving up on capitalism; let's try communism instead." In a different part of the city, a monument bears the graffiti "Angela, we still love you." The park across from our Athens hotel had political and personal graffiti, in Greek and English, all over the statues of the heroes of the Greek struggle for independence. Thanks, Donald, Ann and Marco. It is a dramatic ceremony, and on Sundays and Holidays, they wear these old, colorful uniforms instead of their modern ones, doubling the power of the event. Thanks, Paul. After you mentioned that I did some googling and found the same info in a Wikipedia article. I plan on going with the reman. My local shop can't get a new unit at this time, so a reman would be the best option with them. I'm hopeful that Subaru will help out - we'll see next week. The problem with being that abstract is that viewers sometimes get hung up on guess what the subject matter is. I think #1 is strong enough on just form and geometry to overcome that. Stairwell #8 would be my second choice ase an abstracted representation of a recognizable subject. Mark On 5/29/2016 1:11 PM, Daniel J. Re: GESO: Stairwell Revisited
I agree, Ann, but when I posted the original 3 image gallery, someone suggested lightening the left side of one of the images, and someone else suggested trying B&W. I tried both of these techniques, and tried to clean up the two best image, which were Stairwell 1 and Stairwell 3. Those images retain the same titles in this larger gallery. I still like #1 and #3, which show an upwards view and a downwards view, respectively. I would like you to compare # 1 and #4, which are the same image, with the latter having the left side lightened a bit, as was suggested by Jack Davis. Re: OT - Transmission Replacement - Re manufactured vs Used
Good summary... I don't see pursuing litigation. The car is out of warranty and I had ample opportunities to buy an extended warranty (they kind of pester you to do that). I made the decision not to get the extended warranty and in this case it was a bad call. I've made worse decisions. My first contact with Subaru was positive and I generally have a high regard for the company and have good experiences with the dealership, so I'm hopeful that we can work out some relief. But if not, that's the breaks. My main concern was whether the reman transmission was worth the extra cost vs a used unit. I'm coming down on the side of a reman. A used unit would be pulled out of a wreck so who knows what it might have been exposed to. I could have someone check it over but ultimately, I think of a reman as a used unit that has been thoroughly scrubbed and (probably) has the best warranty. I'm wondering though how I'll feel about the car when it gets back. If I'm not comfortable jumping in and taking a long trip then I will likely sell it off. I'll see how I feel after I have the car back and have driven it a few months. Mark On 5/30/2016 1:57 AM, Alan C wrote: Mark, you have provoked a most interesting thread. A minefield of opinions! In the end it comes down to two things: (a) getting the car on the road again ASAP & (b) economics. The litigation route could take months. If you are to keep the car, an exchange unit (recon) with guarantee seems the best option. It is equivalent to having the existing gearbox repaired. To me a new box is just not on. If you are going to get rid of the car, find a S/H box, hopefully from a reliable scrapyard. Tires were swapped on Friday. The new Goodyears feel much like the Contis did before them: same nice ride, same nice quiet, they stick well in corners and on braking, etc. The little whine at certain road speeds I was hearing with the worn-out Contis is gone. I am happy. Re: OT - Transmission Replacement - Re manufactured vs Used
Subaru makes their own CVT, a rarity these days, so I misspoke in that regard. JATCO makes the Nissan transmission, and it’s also used by Chrysler, GM Mitsubishi and Suzuki, but not Subaru. That’s somewhat irrelevant, but I wanted to clarify. I would still go the dealer route and see if you can get Subaru to help you out on this. I expect you’ll get at least some cooperation. If you do decide to go with a used trans, know that good independent transmission shops are a rarity. Do your homework and check references. This is not an old car, and Subaru's entire U.S. Marketing campaign is based on longevity and reliability. They are likely to help you out on this. Don't buy a used problem. Go to the dealer who sold you the car and work on him. Don't throw money away on a used CVT.
