Whilst in the electronic wilderness of no e-mail, I have been working slowly
on a website. Following advice here, I opted for Smugmug account.

In the meantime whilst I get things going, I've opened a Flickr account to

I have to watch pennies all the time, but it’s not a problem. Doing so enables
occasional luxuries, like travel and camera gear. The x-t1 and the 23/2 wr

Morning all.

This past weekend was the annual Markham fair, the one i submit
pictures to for their photo contests. This year was a dismal year for
me for photos, did not get out a lot but i did manage a few venues,
one of which was the annual plow demo using horse drawn equipment. I
submitted 6 photos and won a first and two thirds, One of my B&W's won
best in class, something i have been striving for for the past 16

October PUG - UP - is Up!

2016-10-03 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all,

For me, this is one of the most enjoyable galleries this year with a
diverse range of interpretations.

Bruce's 'Skipping' is up to his usual high standard and is my favorite
with Matthew's 'Stairway to Nowhere', Bill's 'Flying Fortress' and Ann's
'Up Mt. St Helens - 1991' also very enjoyable.

For some unexpected interpretations of the theme, check out the
submissions by Alan, John and Jan.

As usual you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Next up: 'Iconic Places'

It is indeed an enjoyable and interesting gallery!

Once again, thank you so much, Brian, for all your efforts on our behalf
and the wonderful way you gather and display the images ach month.

My favorite is Bruce Walker's "Skipping." It is a colorful and dynamic
image with strong composition and balance. The look on her face is the
icing on the cake.

I am also quite fond of Matthew hunt's "Stairway to Nowhere": That is a
great composition of an interesting scene, rendered with lots of detail and
textures. "Lunch at the Museum" by Joseph Tainter also grabs my eye and my
imagination; it clearly and effectively depicts that lovely venue.

Overall, a really great PUG!

Yep, it's always amusing to me when a quick grab could be better than a
carefully-planned photo.

As for your awards,

submitted 6 photos and won a first and two thirds,

I thought four thirds could've been more interesting to win. ;-)

A fine gallery as usual. I don't often comment but must say I now know that

Too many wonderful images to comment on. My favorites are Jack’s “Cathedral

Igor’s “Up to the Sky,” and Joseph’s “Lunch at the Museum."

Getting in touch with my inner lesbian

2016-10-03 Thread Larry Colen
I bought a new toy yesterday, took a few snapshots on my way home from
brekkies today.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157673495755641

I know there are some people who hate on Subarus, but this one seems to
be mechanically solid, it was relatively cheap (same out the door as
State Farm paid me for damage to the Screaming Buttweasel), and I talked
the dealer (who specializes in used Subarus) into throwing in a set of
alloy rims for me to mount track tires on for about $80).

I figure that if I get a couple of years out of it, I'll be happy. They
get decent mileage, it seems pretty fun to drive and I'd like to get
some seat time at the track in an AWD car, because I'd like to expand my
skill set.

Some guys are accused of buying cars with big V-8 as a means of
compensation, maybe with this car I'm compensating for my lack of a
vagina. Now I need to track down a rainbow racing stripe for it.

note to Nicole: I'm only joking about the rainbow racing stripe.

I know there are some people who hate on Subarus, but this one seems to be
mechanically solid, it was relatively cheap (same out the door as State Farm
paid me for damage to the Screaming Buttweasel), and I talked the dealer (who
specializes in used Subarus) into throwing in a set of alloy rims for me to
mount track tires on for about $80).

I figure that if I get a couple of years out of it, I'll be happy. They get
decent mileage, it seems pretty fun to drive and I'd like to get some seat time
at the track in an AWD car, because I'd like to expand my skill set.

Some guys are accused of buying cars with big V-8 as a means of compensation,
maybe with this car I'm compensating for my lack of a vagina. Now I need to
track down a rainbow racing stripe for it.

note to Nicole: I'm only joking about the rainbow racing stripe.

No - I copy to a USB thumb drive and then copy them from the thumb drive
to the Android via a file manager. It should be possible to connect the
tablet to the PC via USB directly but I've had problems doing this (the
tablet never seems to know whether it should be charging or connecting
to the PC as an external device). I find the two-step process easier.

Car photography hints?

2016-10-03 Thread Larry Colen
This question is mostly for Paul, but some other people might have some
good suggestions:

My neighbor is trying to sell his 1970 Challenger R/T. He's had it for
40 years and it's generally in pretty good shape (340 engine). He does
not, however, have good photos of it. I've offered to take some for
him. Are there any tips and tricks I should know about to avoid
mistakes ahead of time? I.e. long lens from a distance rather than
close up with a wide lens?

The car needs to be buffed out, would I be better of getting some shots
of it before hand so that the color shows more than the reflections?

What about shooting the interior? Natural light? Maybe some flash to
fill so that the view outside the windows isn't blown out?

Polarizers? Critical or not?

Re: Car photography hints?

2016-10-03 Thread Paul Stenquist
Yes, use your longest lens from a distance. Shoot on asphalt or concrete with a
clean background like trees or hills. Position the car as far away from the
background as possible. Camera height for your key shots should be about
headlamp level. Shoot 3/4 and 7/8 front and rear as well as a full profile.
Then shoot all except the profile from eye level. Finally shoot some 3/4 front
and rear from a height of about 12 feet with a 50mm lens. Use a polarizer on
all shots to eliminate reflections. With the low angle shots you will want to
adjust the polarizer to eliminate reflections in the side of the car. With the
high angles you may want to dial out the sky reflection. If you want to go all
out you can shoot with two different polarizer settings and composite the
results. Shoot the interior with your widest lens and a flash with diffuser. If
the headliner is white or grey, bounce the flash off of it. Use the flash and a
medium wide to shoot the engine.

Shoot the 3/4 and 7/8 shots with a big ap. I usually shoot at 5.6, 6.7 and 8
with the 450 and use the 5.6 if all appears to be in focus. (I focus on the

Dave,

As Brian, has suggested, you can just convert songs to some mp3 format.
Alternatively (I haven't used those), - you may consider some of the
multiple apps (including free ones) available on Google Play.

You can read about different apps and other methods and some useful
tricks e.g. in these three articles:

(note the 2nd or the 3rd comment there about songs with DRM!)

Too busy for me. In a past life I had a stroboframe flash bracket. It was a lot
of hardware with minimal benefit. In the photo of this device I see a cork
surface where the base attaches to the camera. Cork doesn't grip. You need a
soft rubber-like surface. Too many minuses.

i have used a monopod with a simple tilt head and concluded similarly to
Larry's comments that a ball would be better, particularly because i
often used the monopod for macros close to the ground — tilting both the
pole and the camera at odd angles becomes a necessity and a title head
simply doesn't cut it

so i found a used Gitzo GH1780, a tiny 10 oz. ball head with enough tension
sensitivity to support the camera while allowing adjustment of the
camera position on demand (in comparison many small ball heads simply have a
"locked/unlocked" feel); i enjoyed using it for a while, but as i've
graduated to cameras with better shake suppression i don't use the monopod
very often …

2016-10-03 Thread P.J. Alling

There's so much in this post that I've always suspected...

Anyway how could I hate on a Subaru, when I'm driving a Chrysler
Sebring, with the golden alloy's and everything, fit for a pimp, when it
was new. It's not the car I really wanted it was the car that I could
afford when my SAAB 900se decided to throw a rod. On the other hand it
is a convertible, though the demographic of "chicks"* I could reasonably
pick up with it means I'll be sleeping alone a lot.

I know there are some people who hate on Subarus, but this one seems
to be mechanically solid, it was relatively cheap (same out the door
as State Farm paid me for damage to the Screaming Buttweasel), and I
talked the dealer (who specializes in used Subarus) into throwing in a
set of alloy rims for me to mount track tires on for about $80).

I figure that if I get a couple of years out of it, I'll be happy.
They get decent mileage, it seems pretty fun to drive and I'd like to
get some seat time at the track in an AWD car, because I'd like to
expand my skill set.

Some guys are accused of buying cars with big V-8 as a means of
compensation, maybe with this car I'm compensating for my lack of a

Like the photo!

Speaking of racing cars and track time, I had the honor of taking a ten-lap
ride with a famous race driver at Lime Rock, CT, in a Ferrari Daytona once upon
a time many years ago. I can't even describe the level of fear involved after
the first lap. By the third lap, it seemed survivable ... But beyond that, the
sound of that car's engine used in full race regalia was amazing beyond any
other race machine I've ever been near.

Good memories ... :-)

Yes, use your longest lens from a distance. Shoot on asphalt or concrete
with a clean background like trees or hills. Position the car as far away
from the background as possible. Camera height for your key shots should be
about headlamp level. Shoot 3/4 and 7/8 front and rear as well as a full
profile. Then shoot all except the profile from eye level. Finally shoot
some 3/4 front and rear from a height of about 12 feet with a 50mm lens. Use
a polarizer on all shots to eliminate reflections. With the low angle shots
you will want to adjust the polarizer to eliminate reflections in the side
of the car. With the high angles you may want to dial out the sky
reflection. If you want to go all out you can shoot with two different
polarizer settings and composite the results. Shoot the interior with your
widest lens and a flash with diffuser. If the headliner is white or grey,
bounce the flash off of it. Use the flash and a medium wide to shoot the
engine.

My neighbor is trying to sell his 1970 Challenger R/T. He's had it for 40
years and it's generally in pretty good shape (340 engine). He does not,
however, have good photos of it. I've offered to take some for him. Are
there any tips and tricks I should know about to avoid mistakes ahead of
time? I.e. long lens from a distance rather than close up with a wide
lens?

The car needs to be buffed out, would I be better of getting some shots of
it before hand so that the color shows more than the reflections?

What about shooting the interior? Natural light? Maybe some flash to
fill so that the view outside the windows isn't blown out?

Polarizers? Critical or not?

Wonderful shot. A great fall color pic with the added interest of the
river, all nicely composed.

How do you ever expect to learn anything if you never make any mistakes?

By letting other people make them for me.
