In the interests of full disclosure, some photoshoppery was needed in
the bottom right corner to remove a nasty reflection from the aircraft's
window and some minor spotting elsewhere.

I have instructed John and Jan that they need to try pizza in both
New
  York and Chicago.

BTW John, don't forget to push the ISO on your new K-5 way harder
than
you think is possible. Take a photo at what you think is a reasonable
ISO, then take it again using the shutter speed and/or aperture that
you
really want to use if only it were possible to get decent photos at
ISO
  6400 to 16,000.

for example, this was shot at ISO 10,000
  https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/9310682903/in/album-72157634684347823/

  This is 25,600
  https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8366084507/in/album-72157632485855236/

Also, don't be afraid to try to push on the SR at low shutter speeds.
You wouldn't think that you could hand hold below 1/10 second and get
away with it, but if you brace yourself well the K-5 can get a
reasonable percentage of clear shots down to 0.3 seconds hand held.

Are you setting the camera at ISO 10k or 25.6k, or are you "underexposing" in
the camera and pushing at post?

On both of those photos, I had the camera set for Tav. Sometimes, I'll
underexpose a bit to preserve highlights. I generally don't like to
push too much past 6400 or 8000, but sometimes the results surprise me.
I have lost many more photos from too low a shutter speed, or too little
depth of field than I have from too high of an ISO.

In any case, my point was that he should experiment with it, and when he
has the time to take a second try at the photo, give it a try at the
higher ISO because if he's coming from an ist, then he just will not
believe what the camera can really do.

In any case, we all have our own limits as to what we'll tolerate in
terms of noise. The when I was processing the shot of Jon, my first
thought was that the noise on it was a little rough, and I wondered what
ISO I was shooting at, I expected 8K not 25K.

As a side bit of internet history, the band he is playing with in that
photo, Deth Specula, made internet history by being the first band to
broadcast a concert live over the internet.

HAR!
And I've been complaining about clerks tell me that "the computer does not

That rock formation got me thinking if it was "Dog Beach", between Del Mar
and Encinitas:

https://goo.gl/sp677J
But it doesn't seem to be the case.

Encinitas is about 1 hour south of LA (depending on the traffic).

Sorry, while I am very familiar with San Diego's vicinities, I don't know
the coastal line near LA that well to recognize this place.

But on the photo, it looks like it may have been not much sunny (was it?)..

Also, just my curiousity: You mentioned Encino. But AFAIK, Encino is not on
the shore. Rather Santa Monica would be between Encino and the water.
Or, was it Encinitas (much more south, closer to San Diego), - which is right

I have instructed John and Jan that they need to try pizza in both New
York and Chicago.

BTW John, don't forget to push the ISO on your new K-5 way harder than
you think is possible. Take a photo at what you think is a reasonable
ISO, then take it again using the shutter speed and/or aperture that you
really want to use if only it were possible to get decent photos at ISO
6400 to 16,000.

for example, this was shot at ISO 10,000
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/9310682903/in/album-72157634684347823/

This is 25,600
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8366084507/in/album-72157632485855236/

Also, don't be afraid to try to push on the SR at low shutter speeds.
You wouldn't think that you could hand hold below 1/10 second and get
away with it, but if you brace yourself well the K-5 can get a
reasonable percentage of clear shots down to 0.3 seconds hand held.

Re: Peso-Mallard Hen's Dilemma

2016-10-14 Thread Jack Davis

Hi, Igor,

When I first took a look at this image, the clarity inspired me to pull it up
by probably 30%.
Was shot off-hand with the 55-300 at about 60ft(?)
Seeing that the enlargement seemed to hold up well, I proceeded to convert it
to a jpg for posting.
Actually, I felt the Hen's speckled breast detail was especially detailed.
Maybe I was a bit too
taken with the image in general ans should have stuck with the native image.

Thanks, again, for your comments!

Jack,

No, I meant the two front ducks (the 3rd one is also, but that's
understandable, it's slightly outside of DOF.

I think I found a partial problem. For some reason,
Firefox shows the image at a slightly large size then what it is in
reality. So, it is dynamically upscaling it. And that is likely resulting
in the apparent softness. It is not happening in other browsers.
(I just realized, - my browser had some small zoom value, probably 110%.)

However, I still see that some parts of the two front ducks are not very
sharp. E.g. the breast of the brown one is sort of blurred.
I am not sure if it is a motion blur, the resolution limitation of the
lens, or a very narrow DoF. It might be a combination of several factors.
What was the focal length and the aperture for this shot?

It's a nice catch in any case!

Igor

I need a phone to do (calls, texts, email and some web). I have an iPad
Mini 2 for other stuff and it works just fine for what I need a bigger
screen for (navigating, banking, music, pics, web etc). And the MacBook
Pro for the big stuff.

The BB syncs all my contacts and dates with the other devices really
well and has loads of things an iPhone doesn't, like *expandable memory*
(holy mackerel) and a real tactile keyboard. Going from Palms to iPhone
in 2007 I didn't realise how much I disliked a virtual keyboard until I
left it behind.

And for the record, always go red squirrel - even though the bristles on
the greys are better...
