k-1 square crop test

2016-10-22 Thread Larry Colen
When I was photographing a seminar at the dojo today, I tried
photographing in square crop mode.

On the bright side, it worked great for the photos that I was taking.
two people practicing Aikido can nearly fill a square composition, where
they leave a lot of the 3:2 frame empty.
On the down side, the raw files are no smaller. I also don't see any
easy way of recovering (in lightroom) the image that was cropped off to
either side, so the frames where someone's limb left the frame, I would
have been better off shooting uncropped.

If the square crop gave us 24 MP square images (rather than 36 3:2) it
would be awesome, it would save space on the card, and more importantly
in the buffer. As it is, all it saves me is selecting a bunch of frames
and cropping them square.

In fact the book author was analyzing O'Keeffe's intimate flower

intentional erotic aspects and stated that critics were applying their
own preconceptions to her work.

That's their job.

Artists aren't always, or indeed ever, the best placed to speak about their

Re: Peso - 'Carp River'

2016-10-22 Thread John

Maybe they've just been beat down like the Uwharrie Mountains of NC;
maximum elevation 1,188 ft. Supposedly 500 million years ago the
Uwharries peaked at over 20,000 ft.

Even though they're worn & stooped over now, they're still "mountains"
the way aging boxing legends are still "The Champ" long after the title
has passed on to younger contenders.

On 10/21/2016 2:10 PM, Ken Waller wrote:

I was under the impression that there were no hills, let alone

Not sure they would qualify as mountains relative to their western
neighbors but the image of Carp River was taken from the Lake of the
Clouds overlook in the Porcupine Wilderness State Park in the western
end of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Its listed altitude is 1375ft,
with Carp River listed at 1076ft.

BTW the highest point in Michigan is Mt. Arvon, also in the western U.
P. is listed as 1979ft.

That's their job.

Artists aren't always, or indeed ever, the best placed to speak about their
work. And when they do they often lie about it.

Critics are there to point out things about the work that the rest of us,
including the artist, may not see or immediately recognise.

In fact the book author was analyzing O'Keeffe's intimate flower
studies and comparing them to Weston's shells (not Steiglitz!), but I

intentional erotic aspects and stated that critics were applying their

There's a lot that I like about that photo, although any photo with
Dorrie naked probably has a lot going in it's favor.

Now I want to do a photo of a bunch of naked artists drawing a clothed
 model.

Getting back to my original PESO image, of course what drew me to i was the
very fact that Georgia O'Keeffe had done nude self portraits. I jfound
that quite surprising.

By the way, the docent at the O'Keeffee Museum was quite impressed by the
fact that I actually knew O'Keeffe was married to Alfred Stieglitz

Thanks, Larry. That's straight out of camera too, not even cropped, as
you can see an intruding reflector to the right.

I should mention that the artist there is Julie, my neighbor. She's
partly responsible for my present photographic direction/obsession.

We frequently walk our dogs together and chat about life and art. She
attends regular life drawing sessions and her talking about those got
me thinking, why should she be having all the fun?

Thanks! I'm quite proud of that one. It's the only real limestone cave in

By the way fluidr is just a front end for flickr. You can just change
the https to http and flickr to fluidr and you get:

http://www.fluidr.com/photos/alunfoto/29790913253/

I particularly like it for showing albums because it shows the pictures
in larger format with the exif data

https://www.flickr.com/photos/alunfoto/sets/72157674899633796
becomes
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/alunfoto/sets/72157674899633796

By the way you have some annoyingly good photos in that album.
such as:
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/alunfoto/29632926134/

If I don't want the exif data, I tend to prefer the flickriver front end:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/alunfoto/sets/72157674899633796/

Note that you can select, in the upper left, the size displayed.

fluidr is just a front end for flickr. You can just change the https to http
and flickr to fluidr and you get:
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/alunfoto/29790913253/

I particularly like it for showing albums because it shows the pictures in
larger format with the exif data

https://www.flickr.com/photos/alunfoto/sets/72157674899633796
becomes
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/alunfoto/sets/72157674899633796

By the way you have some annoyingly good photos in that album.
such as:
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/alunfoto/29632926134/

If I don't want the exif data, I tend to prefer the flickriver front end:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/alunfoto/sets/72157674899633796/

Note that you can select, in the upper left, the size displayed.

There's a lot that I like about that photo, although any photo with
Dorrie naked probably has a lot going in it's favor.

Now I want to do a photo of a bunch of naked artists drawing a clothed
 model.

Elliott Erwitt did that, but I can't find the picture at the moment. Definitely
worth doing.
