PESO: Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

2016-11-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Built in 1781, west of the Santa Fe Plaza, the historic Nuestra Senora de
Guadalupe church is now an art and history museum. The Santuario contains
the Archdiocese of Santa Fe's collection of New Mexican santos (carved
images of the saints), Italian Renaissance paintings, and Mexican baroque
paintings. Among the treasured works is Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the
largest and finest oil paintings of the Spanish Southwest, dated 1783 and
signed by Jose de Alzibar, one of Mexico's most renowned painters.

2017 PUG Themes - The Final Cut

2016-11-05 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

Thanks for the feedback. Here are the themes for 2017:

January; Doors
February; This Sporting Life
March; Geometric Shapes in Nature
April; 20th Anniversary Gallery
May; Leading Lines
June; Mountains
July; Leaves
August; City Transportation
September; Abandoned
October; Nakedness
November; Less is More
December; National Parks

I've considered all the suggestions and, if they don't appear here,
don't take it personally :-) They have either been filed away for next
year or omitted because I'm concerned that may not achieve a good level
of participation. I've expanded Bruce's 'Nude' suggestion into
'Nakedness', which can be broadly interpreted to include concepts other
than human nudity (eg. artwork featuring nudity, denuded landscapes -
perhaps even baldness :-)>.

I like Igor's idea of reaching out to former PDMLers to contribute to
the 20th Anniversary Gallery - something to keep in mind as April
approaches.

Re: AF film lenses on DSLR

2016-11-05 Thread Darren Addy
You should also note your aperture when you get that center blue spot. You
may find it is not there at other apertures. The problem is usually a FLAT
rear lens element (as seen from the sensor side). Using a lens with a
non-flat rear element should not exhibit the problem.

Re: PESO: Vendors at Palace of the Governors

2016-11-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Ann.

I like the shot, but I wish I could have gotten a clearer image. The sun
was glaring outside and the vendors were all in the shade of the veranda.

We were assured by our local guide that the program still requires that the
vendors belong to a registered tribe and stamp their work with a personal
signature, and that all the items for sale are legitimate and authentic,
and in the tradition of both the artist and his or her tribe.

We were also told that the items being sold anyplace else in or around the
plaza could be authentic or could be cheap Chinese copies.

They are in the process of completing the Manhattan Project National

Lee and I rarely pass up a science museum of any sort. Mostly, however, we
wanted just to be there, even though the locals apparently avoid the place
because of reports of lingering radiation in the area.

Loretto was interesting, but worth only 15 minutes at best. We had more
fun walking around the area, looking into the shops and galleries, and
enjoying espresso and gelato under a large tree outside a small local cafe.

No, not even Paul Stenquist can hand hold the FA*300/2.8 at a quarter
of a second! I rested the lens on the wall at the side of the bridge
from which I was shooting.

I think I prefer the first one by a small margin. I love the look of
the splash of water at the bottom of the image. What I like about the
second shot is the smears of white from the oars themselves — they
look like something Turner would have put in his paintings. (And for
those of you who haven't seen the film "Turner", you should do so as
soon as possible!)

I'm printing #1 as I write this. I'll do the other one next and see
how they compare as prints.

I just sold my Optio S at a camera sell/swap meet. It was still going strong

The VF in the X10 and X20 is an optical design, but is basic. The
difference between the two is there is an overlay of info in the X20,
nothing in the X10. The VF zooms with the lens to give a good
approximation of the shot (80 percent coverage IIRC), and obviously
there is the rear LCD for precise work. The rear LCD has a proximity
sensor so it can be set to turn off when the face gets near.

The whole camera is built out of solid unobtainium. You can easily use
it to knock in nails.

Easy.

Fuji X20.

X10 at a push if you want something cheap, the 20 is better.

The 30 has no optical viewfinder, preferring instead an EVF. I have no
experience with it. Ask Dave.

If I'm grabbing a single camera to shove in a jacket pocket and nothing
else, it's always the X20.

unattractive. It was an interesting experience to stand where all those
great minds gathered to create the atomic or nuclear age.
I wanted to preserve the moment for myself, and I posted the collage here

Lee and I had hoped to make a quick trip to Los Alamos on the day before we

we did not have time to drive to Los Alamos and back before the final class

Actually, although I have heard it called "the Road Runner train," it is
officially the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, or NMRX. The line opened
only 10 years ago, and service to Santa Fe (from Albuquerque) began in
2008. There are nine engines, and the one shown is NMRX 101. There are 11
scheduled daily runs in each direction.

It apparently operates at a substantial deficit.

Which was entirely predictable. I like trains but they make no economic
sense if population density is below a certain level. We only approach
that density in the US in a very few places. I live in one of them and
even here they struggle.

I am a big fan of trains, old and new.

Re: Thoughts: pocketable compact with filmic ergonomics?

2016-11-05 Thread P.J. Alling
I've handled a Canon G12 felt solid like a 1970's compact fixed lens RF
camera. I expect any in the series would have the same feel and
capabilities. They were supposed to have very good image quality. The
optical viewfinder made that on a Kodak Instamatic 100 look good
unfortunately. The latest replacement in the series had dropped the
viewfinder entirely so don't go there if that's important to you.

Then there's also the Fujifilm X10 and X20 with the lovely hybrid
viewfinder. I haven't actually tried out one of those but supposedly
Fuji has seriously improved the usability with firmware updates. The X30
seems to have done away with the hybrid VF and only has a EVF. I have
played briefly with a Fujifilm XPro1 and the viewfinder is lovely so I'm
assuming the viewfinders on the X10 and X20 are as well.

If it were me looking for something like this I'd look at a Fujifilm
X20, but I've got a lovely Kodak Retina IIIc which is an old school RF
camera, so I'd probably just slip that in my pocket and be the envy of
hipsters everywhere, (are hipsters still a thing?)

Thoughts: pocketable compact with filmic ergonomics?

2016-11-05 Thread Bruce Walker
Apologies for the word filmic, but I wanted a snappy subject. I am
finally tired of trying to get any decent shots with a smartphone
which, despite being always available, nearly always disappoints me.

So what I'd like is pocketable and with the "feel" of an old school
film camera. That is, simple ergonomics. Simple interface, with
buttons and dials for the important most-used functions. I need
reading glasses to see closeup and I prefer devices I can work largely
by feel. Best if it has a viewfinder. Willing to consider EVF if I can
see it in the flesh and it convinces me.

I'd be okay with a fixed lens, but it would have to be a normal. 50mm
FF equiv. Subjects would often be landscape features, and the wide
lenses on smartphones just drive me nuts.

As a fellow Pentax user, what compact camera like this would you recommend?

The second image is nice, Malcolm, but I prefer the first. It is more
abstract, and more mysterious.

As a former college oarsman, I really envy you for having the experience of
being at the Head of the Charles, which is the largest rowing event in the

Thanks for looking, Malcolm.

I indeed posted it for the history, rather than the quality of the
image(s). The street signs and the house number plates are of course quite
unattractive. It was an interesting experience to stand where all those
great minds gathered to create the atomic or nuclear age.
I wanted to preserve the moment for myself, and I posted the collage here
ti create an excuse to share that moment and to note a part of the history
of Santa Fe of which some may not be aware.

Lee and I had hoped to make a quick trip to Los Alamos on the day before we
flew back home, but the ruins at Puye Pueblo were so interesting and so
inviting to explore that we stayed there longer than planned. As a result,
we did not have time to drive to Los Alamos and back before the final class
dinner, so we substituted a quick trip to Loretto Chapel instead.

Not even in New Mexico would they name their prized new commuter rail
system after that loser !

There are 11
scheduled daily runs in each direction.
http://www.nmrailrunner.com/rio-metro-schedules/train-schedule/train-weekday
It apparently operates at a substantial deficit.

I am a big fan of trains, old and new.

I had a great day with the lovely Jan & John Coyle! Really super time, and the
Coyles are absolutely lovely. Here’s a small gallery of the scene on Michigan
Ave., which was flooded with Cubs fans. I got downtown a bit early to get some
quick shots before meeting the Coyles. Once we hooked up, we strolled the
galleries at the art museum. Then a quick stop at the Bean and then some
pub-grub and a meet up with the Sullivan’s. Great to see Lynn & Bob. I haven’t
seen them in a long time. The best shot in the gallery is the last one, which
is a nice shot of the Coyles. I think you’ll all agree their lovely spirit
