Re: Almost on topic
I believe when they first got into manufacturing cameras Asahi was a "horizontally integrated" (??) conglomerate; the company that owned the breweries also owned newspapers, manufacturing, glass-making ... they started spinning off various subsidiaries post WWII. Wasn't Asahi the original name for the cameras they manufactured & Pentax was a model name they applied to their reflex cameras when they added the pentaprism? And the camera brand morphed into Asahi Pentax and then into Pentax alone? Or I could be wrong. It's not really that important. I just ran across the article & noticed the name. On 12/13/2016 2:35 PM, Daniel J. Matyola wrote: Asahi is a decent beer. Of course, Asahi is a common brand name used by many unrelated Japanese companies. Bruce Walker wrote: Thanks very much, Larry. Intrigued by your DoF comment I pixel-peeped the shot. I estimate that the plane of focus includes Annie's hair (her bangs over her forehead), her fingers (handle of the cup), and her right shoulder and upper arm. Her knee and that piercing are actually soft. Her eyelashes are in reasonable focus, but her eyes are closed so that matters less. That was a kind of one-off shot as I was mostly shooting to include environment and I scooted forward on a whim to get that close-framed shot. I most likely tried to focus on her eyes but focus-recompose may have thrown that off, or I just blew focus because I just wanted to capture the moment. Interesting, I did use the word "seems". I suspect that the hair at the back of her head being quite out of focus, and the other bits of her face being harder to see what is in focus just fools my eyes. It was definitely worth shooting, and looking at. I think that it is a concept that you could revisit to good effect, especially since this one was a bit off the cuff. I think that where this is a good photo, with a bit of planning you could get some great photos on the theme of people relaxing with a comforting beverage or meal, and if some of them happen to be beautiful women, that could have merits as well. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Curious as to what got you interested in a diesel - heavy towing, mileage etc? We do a fairly annual vacation to British Columbia, pulling a 6000 lb trailer. One of the passes we have to go over is a truck killer, something like 30 km of 9º+ grades. The last time I drove it, we were down to about 20km/hr nearing the top, and I was feathering between overheating the tranny and overheating the engine. This was with a gas Nissan Titan, 5.6L 8 cyl, 307 HP, 385Lb torque. The diesel is 306 HP, 555 lbs torque. We can avoid the pass by doing a 5 hour bypass that takes a ferry crossing instead, but it pretty much wastes a day. I can only take two weeks vacation at a time, so losing 2 extra days to travel is a pain. Other than that, I'm fine with the gas engine, though I do like the diesel power curve. What is considered cold for a Diesel? Should plugging in the block heater make a difference? Can glow plugs be flakey? It's not all that cold here right now. Anything below about -16ºC is an issue for this truck. This morning was -27ºC, and it took multiple attempts to get it running. Starting is completely automatic, the only control the driver has in this regard is a PHD button that initiates the start cycle. After that, it's up to the truck. I like the truck, but if I need to go out and start it and warm it up every 5-6 hours during the cold months, it is not going to be a pleasant vehicle to own. They say don't idle it for extended periods because of the particulate filters, and if it is idled to much, it goes into perpetual regeneration of the filter, which means it's dumping raw fuel into the exhaust to burn off the soot. This drops gas mileage to about 60l/100km. One it is running, it is a joy to drive. Not to mention that the idea is centered mostly around putting your pics into a social media environment right away. Phones already allow you to that. No one wants to carry a phone AND this device. I can see carrying a phone and a DSLR, but not a compact camera that does virtually the same thing as the phone does. Asahi is a decent beer. Of course, Asahi is a common brand name used by many unrelated Japanese companies. "Asa hi" means "morning sun," which is an alternative for "rising sun," the symbol of japan. (The Japanese name for their country, Nihon or Nippon, means "origin of the sun," a name borrowed from the Chinese, which view their own country as the Middle Kingdom and Japan as the land of the origin of the (ie rising" sun. Well. if you hadn’t told us you weren’t happy with the focusing, we wouldn’t know it from this set. Re: PESO - life sustaining
Malcolm, I'm in the middle of my third 30-day Facebook ban in 5 months. It is supposed to end on Christmas day I think. Facebook's Merry Christmas to me. :) It's an occupational hazard shared by everybody shooting nudes. The model I am shooting today is just now off a Facebook ban, and all the photographers in the private art nude groups I'm in are banned from time to time. Re: PESO - life sustaining
Thanks very much, Larry. A very fine collection of great "action portraits," Larry. GESO Benefit for Pete
Some friends of mine run a weekly blues jam. Tonight was the last one this year, and they did it as a benefit to raise money for a friend (the fellow in the first six frames of the set). Most of these were shot with the K-1 and the FA 80-200/2.8, a few with the 15-30 and the 28-105, and one with my bigma. I think I lost fewer shots to missed focus than with earlier bodies, but I'm still not completely happy with the focusing on the K-1. Lighting was with led spots, with a lot of blue in the back. If anyone has hints for how to increase the autofocus hit rate when photographing musicians moving around on stage, I'm interested. On the plus side, the K-1 doesn't seem to obsess on the microphone as badly as previous bodies did either. I don't know if I got any knockout photos, but I trimmed down the facebook set to 41 competent frames for flickr, I'm pretty happy with the set: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157673913999413 For gear heads who want to see the exif data: http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157673913999413 I haven't yet applied any noise reduction via the slider in lightroom. Comments and such are appreciated as always. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
