Re: Epson rebates
Since they are both much newer technology I suspect either will produce better prints than the 2880. From what I've read, the P5000 is the one to get if you're doing heavy printing day after day. It probably produces somewhat better prints, too, but I doubt the difference would be noticeable without serious magnified examination. The other question, for me, would be how many prints do I have to sell to justify the cost difference. -p On 3/28/2017 4:17 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: Which is a better photo printer? Re: The recent device ban and traveling with a camera
Stan, I don't know about Delta, I haven't flown on Delta for ages. That's why I didn't write "all" airlines. My most recent personal experience was with Turkish Airlines and Czech Airlines last summer (on international flights), and with Frontier (domestic) last month. All of them claimed they do not do real time tracking (if any tracking at all). While discussing the situation with the first two, I've read confirmation that [at least some] other major airlines do not track packages in real time (if at all). As for Delta and its app, - I actually wonder what is done "under the hood". Do they actually *track* your luggage (i.e. do they show you the actual scan place and time?) or they just follow your itinerary, making an *ASSUMPTION* that the luggage follows alone? Well, I see the answers to my questions here: http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/26/13415458/delta-bag-tracking-app It's a very recent feature, just a few months old. I don't know how many US airports Delta and Delta Connections fly to (out of almost 400 commercial airports), but 84 is probably not all of them. But I am glad to see that a major carrier started such an effort. Hopefully, the others will follow suit. Thanks for alerting me about its existence. (Or, maybe they have some capability to research those scans offline.) It looks like, unlike Fedex and UPS, they have no financial incentives to introduce tracking. (Cf. USPS has finally implemented real-time tracking of packages to compete with Fedex and UPS, despite being reluctant if not defiant for many-many years.) Igor On Delta, you can track your luggage on your iPhone if you have their app installed. Pretty much real time. Nice to see: “your bag is now being delivered on Carousel 2”… So yes, the technology definitely does support this feature. But then technology supports allowing passengers to go online and reserve specific seats, and [rant] yet some airlines don’t seem to be able to implement that feature. Re: The recent device ban and traveling with a camera
Stan: Yep, the contradiction with the safety intents and regulations is evident. I don't know how they are going to resolve that. Because the ion-batteries in the checked-in luggage is also a regulation... In the end, it might mean that if you flew, say on Turkish Airlines to Europe (or even Turkey) with your laptop or tablet (and you know how many laptops and tablet you can see on todays flight, especially the one across the pond?) and you are flying back, you might become a hostage of your own laptop when trying to board: You cannot check it in due to the battery, and you cannot take it in the carry-on. It's interesting that Bloomberg.com thinks that the "laptop ban" might not be about security, but about protectionism. Whether that's correct or not, - I don't know, but it sounds consistent. Look at the references at the bottom of that article, - they mark the "money trail". https://goo.gl/5TMloE https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-03-21/the-laptop-ban-and-what-it-means-for-air-travel-quicktake-q-a Igor Stanley Halpin Tue, 28 Mar 2017 10:15:05 -0700 wrote: When I first read about the ban it gave me pause as well. Not least as it makes no sense in that it directly contradicts safety warnings about LiON batteries in checked bags. But then I read a second time. It applies not to specific airlines, but rather to any flights by any airline that originate in one of x bad-guy countries and fly directly to the U.S. or U.K. It happens that no U.S. airlines have such routes, some U.K. airlines do. For the bad guys, this means that they will have to take connecting flights rather than direct flights if they want to cause trouble, and that extra hassle presumably will deter them. For the rest of us, so far the ban is irrelevant. However, if/when it becomes more general, my plan is to keep my lenses and all batteries in my carry-on camera pack. I will carefully pack two camera bodies, one each in two different suitcases. Then check to verify insurance coverage, cross my fingers, and go. stan On Tue, 28 Mar 2017, Igor PDML-StR wrote: Since the most recent on the devices in the carry-on on certain airlines from some destination, I've been thinking that a few options for flying are no longer available for me. And as we've discussed before, it would be extremely risky to place a DSLR+lenses into a regular checked-in suitcase. Two of the banned airlines have (or rather had) a potential for me flying their flights: Emirates and Turkish Airlines. I've never flown Emirates due to the routing/pricing, but always wanted because of their reputation. Turkish Airlines, on the other hand, offers competitive pricing for flying to Europe (connecting in Istambul), and since they are in the aliance with United, I've used them on a couple of trips recently, both business and personal. It is interesting that Emirates just came up with a solution that *might* work: (USA Today:) https://goo.gl/G0HQrj http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/flights/todayinthesky/2017/03/23/emirates-rolls-out-laptop-handling-service-response-ban/99543956/ With Turkish Airlines, whose Customer Service attitude is so "laid back" that it neglects "customer" and to some degree "service", - I am not sure if I would trust even such a solution. -- I mean I wouldn't be sure that my camera bag will not walk away between the gate and the cargo. And then for any airline, there is airport ground operations personnel on the arrival to US.
When I first read about the ban it gave me pause as well. Then check to verify insurance coverage, cross my fingers, and go. stan > On Mar 28, 2017, at 11:11 AM, Igor PDML-StRwrote: > > > Since the most recent on the devices in the carry-on on certain airlines from > some destination, I've been thinking that a few options for flying are no > longer available for me. > As far as I understand, in addition to the laptops, DSLRs (and any other > cameras besides cellphones are prohibited in the carry-on as well. > And as we've discussed before, it would be extremely risky to place a > DSLR+lenses into a regular checked-in suitcase. > > Two of the banned airlines have (or rather had) a potential for me flying > their flights: Emirates and Turkish Airlines. > I've never flown Emirates due to the routing/pricing, but always wanted > because of their reputation. > Turkish Airlines, on the other hand, offers competitive pricing for flying to > Europe (connecting in Istambul), and since they are in the aliance with > United, I've used them on a couple of trips recently, both business and > personal. > > It is interesting that Emirates just came up with a solution that *might* > work: > (USA Today:) > https://goo.gl/G0HQrj > http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/flights/todayinthesky/2017/03/23/emirates-rolls-out-laptop-handling-service-response-ban/99543956/ > > With Turkish Airlines, whose Customer Service attitude is so "laid back" that > it neglects "customer" and to some degree "service", - I am not sure if I > would trust even such a solution. -- I mean I wouldn't be sure that my camera > bag will not walk away between the gate and the cargo. > > And then for any airline, there is airport ground operations personnel on the > arrival to US. > > > Igor > > -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: The recent device ban and traveling with a camera
That's a good thought regarding the lenses. It might be worth checking in a while how the foreign counterparts of TSA are reading the ban. (It's often hard to argue with those.) As for the camera, the primary concern is not about damage but about theft. A valuable item in the suitcase has a high potential of being removed from there. Worse than that, there is yet another factor. With connections, the likelyhood of a suitcase being lost is far from zero. When you have a valuable item in it, and you are flying from/to/through countries with low salaries and/or high level of corruption, the chances of the suitcase being lost become very significant. So, even if your camera is insured, you are increasing chances for the headache related to the rest of your belongings. With the disproportionally low financial responsibilities that airlines carry for each lost suitcase, the airlines have rather low incentives to guard the luggage, or to track it properly. In today's electronic world, when you can see (close to) real-time tracking of FedEx and UPS packages, - you'd be surprised that the airlines (at least many of them) do not track the movement of luggage in real time. I.e. they cannot see where the last scan was. My understanding is that the only reason for the bar codes on the luggage tags today is just for sorting. (Or, maybe they have some capability to research those scans offline.) It looks like, unlike Fedex and UPS, they have no financial incentives to introduce tracking. (Cf. USPS has finally implemented real-time tracking of packages to compete with Fedex and UPS, despite being reluctant if not defiant for many-many years.) Re: Well, paint me green and call me a cucumber...
That kind of depends actually. Ricoh could have chosen to limit movie recording time for any number of reasons, famously, certain very expensive models of Nikon and Canon still cameras had those limits set because of EU regulations and taxes levied on video cameras which effected the entire world. It could be that it was just easier to implement on the available hardware for any number of underlying reasons. I expect that it was left out because there simply wasn't room in the PROM chip too have everything. On 3/28/2017 11:01 AM, Darren Addy wrote: That's a good thought/question Gonz (overheating limiting the amount of time you can shoot in that mode). I have yet to try it, myself. On the K-1, in camera mode, it has an interval shooting selection that can work to create either frames or movies, but it still uses the full mirror/shutter path to do so and the minimum interval is 2s. It would be nice if it had an electronic shutter mode for intervals of less than 2s and did not use the mirror/shutter path. But this probably has the same overheating limitations of movie mode for long periods of time. In movie mode there are no interval options, only options for the remote. You might as well use time-lapse mode in your iPhone or equivalent for these types of situations. On Wed, Mar 22, 2017 at 3:48 PM, Darren Addy wrote: I have never gotten to really know my cameras really well, but am trying to change that. I learned something today that may be of interest to the PDML (if I'm not the only one who didn't realize this). I got a K-01 (long ago) and have planned to use it mainly as a time-lapse camera and also for astro work mounted on my Vixen Polarie (tracker). So most of us are well aware of the fact that our Pentax cameras have a built-in intervalometer. If they have a jack, they can also use external intervalometers (for example to exceed the image number limitations of the camera settings). The images are usually then compiled into time-lapse "movies" using Photoshop or Picasa or some such software. But what I only learned today is that there is a separate way to make time-lapse movies (in camera) using the MOVIE mode. On the K-01 and Q, this is done by selecting "interval shooting" in the movie menu. On my K-3 II, this is done by switching the switch to "Movie" and then hitting the Drive Mode button (where your options are: Remote Control, Remote Control Off, & Interval Movie Mode). Under "Interval Movie Mode" you select your: Recorded Pixels: 4K, HD, FullHD Interval: (intervals of: 2 sec., 5 sec., 10 sec., 20 sec., 30 sec., 1 min., 5 min., 10 min., 30 min., and 1 hour.) Recording Time: HR:MIN:SEC Start Interval: (Now, or Set Time) If Start Interval = Set Time then Start Time can be set HR:MIN Interval Movie Mode results in an .AVI file. I believe you can pull that AVI file into your video editing software to speed it up further, if a clip is too long for your tastes. Here is an example someone took with a K-3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGli2qH7ACM Example taken with a K-01: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj9kwWLVErw=youtu.be As an aside, the K-01 is supposed to be GREAT at either type of time-lapse (movie or still composites) probably because it lacks a viewfinder (which would need to be covered) and mirror, so it delivers superb exposure control and even is said to handle night time to daylight transitions (and vice versa) with out the need to deflicker. It looks like most Pentax models since the K-01 and Q have this mode, though minor details may vary. For example, the minimum recording interval on a K-50 is 3 seconds (not 2). I'm looking forward to trying this out on both my K-3 II and the K-01. The downside to this movie mode (I believe) is that you don't have the individual frames any more, and you don't have an HDR option as you would if shooting intervals in still mode. So there are probably times when you would want to use one mode over the other. However, The great advantage to using the Interval Movie Mode (Movie > Interval Shooting) is that you don’t have to deal with the hundreds or thousands of individual high-res files in post-production to manually create the movie file. Hope someone else finds this interesting. Re: Well, paint me green and call me a cucumber...
This doesn't work the same on the K-1. Re: Why did my K1 not go automatically to DST? Problem solved!

The GPS sattelite(s) don't know where YOU are, they only send an encoded very exact TIME signal which can be received everywhere the sattelite is 'visible' Your GPS device can then calculate its position by comparing time-differences as received from multiple sattelites (closest sattelite is received first :) The decoded time will be available to the GPS device this way, but it is UTC time. The device needs to convert that to local time using timezone + DST information. >For military on the ground it can be crucial to know the exact local time. >Even when all other systems fail. Yes, but the GPS only supplies UTC times. BTW: In large scale military operations, they often use UTC times directly, it used to be called ZULU time, for ZERO deviation from the ZERO-meridian time :) >_Well, all together it took me a lot more time, than simply adapting the clock >manually! But I gained knowledge! Indeed, I checked my K3, it did not have DST checked either (fixed now). It is important to set that correctly, otherwise the 'Sync' done by the GPS unit will set the time wrong (since the conversion from UTC to local-time will be off by 1 hour) I have had that happening a few times, setting it manually, then seeing it change automatically as soon as the GPS unit gets a proper connection :) Regards, JvW -- Jan van Wijk; http://www.dfsee.com Flickr : jvw_pentax -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Why did my K1 not go automatically to DST? Problem solved!
_Problem solved!_ In the GPS/Compass menu I checked the "GPS time sync" box, I thought this should give automatic DST switching. But in the "World time" menu, I have home town Amsterdam and destination Amsterdam, then if you go one menu deeper, there is a check box for DST. Checking this box immediately switched the time to summertime! _Why correct time with pictures matters for me _From the group reactions I see that many members only care about the correct date._ _Often I take outdoor pictures with the position of the sun not optimal for preferred lighting. For a remake later, I use the time to estimate how many hours earlier or later I have to be there. _Is DST in the GPS info itself?_ Some members suggested that the camera needs look-up tables to see DST data of specific countries. I am not so sure about that. I did not get a clear answer from Google. But, GPS was designed for military purposes, it contains time information, so why not also DST data? For military on the ground it can be crucial to know the exact local time. Even when all other systems fail. _ _Well, all together it took me a lot more time, than simply adapting the clock manually! But I gained knowledge! Thanks for all responds! _ _ On 28-Mar-17 02:54, Zos Xavius wrote: Yes it would use UTC most likely. I must add that none of my cameras have ever transitioned to DST automatically. Maybe I am using it wrong somehow? Ok. I just looked at my K-3 and though it was set to Chicago as the city it never changed. It does have DST highlighted though next to it so I'm confused frankly why it wouldn't kick over. Changing the home city to NYC adjusted the time ahead one hour, but I think that is just because I moved the time zone. Yeah I set it to LA and it changed the time again. Toggling DST on and off changes the time as well. I think you have to manually enable it. I just have it on all the time and change my time as necessary. My K-3 was actually set to the wrong time. Not like it really matters to be honest. I care far more about the date. On Mon, Mar 27, 2017 at 4:38 PM, P. J. Allingwrote: Well, yes and no. If you look at that standard Time/Date structure, (Gaud this is getting into the weeds), if the software is using it correctly it's stores UTC a flag and an offset to get the local time. I assume that the OS used by the camera includes a Time/Date object. I also assume it stores the Timestamp in the "standard" manner. So yes it stores the data in UTC. I will check with Ricoh/Pentax why there would be no DST timetable for the Netherlands. As they should know US could be first but Netherlands are second! Anyhow, I will not wait for the software update, but change the time manually.
