Re: Mini PDML Oxford

2017-05-12 Thread Mark Roberts
I can confirm that PDML Oxford and the outing to the Trout Inn was
splendid. Good company, good food and drink in a good setting. I'll
have photos later but I don't know how much later. We have a final day
in London before flying back to the States. Then I'll be preparing for
the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend. I'm not sure how
much time I'll have for sorting through my UK photos in between.

I could not resist a look at the lenses. I noted that the 300mm is on offer for
about $200 less than I paid 2-3 months ago from Adorama. If the other prices
are comparable, this looks like a very good sale.

Re: PESO: Rouen Cathedral

2017-05-12 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Chris.

No, I was only in France for 8 days, the week before Easter in early
April. My wife and I took a river cruise on the Seine, with an excursion
to the D-Day landing beaches and two days in Paris. It is just taking me
this long to get around to all the images I took while there.

The Rouen Cathedral was special to me, because of the many paintings by
Monet of its facade in varying light. A poster of one of those works hung
in my room in college, and was one of the few decorations on our first
apartment after Lee and I got married,

I tried to take image of the view that Monet used, from the front, but even
with my 18-135 zoom and my 17 mm fisheye, I couldn't get the whole thing in
one frame. There is a line of buildings across the street, and in fact the
upper floors of those buildings is where Monet did most of his painting
there.

As we went around the cathedral, on our way to the St Jean church and
memorial, I noticed this view of the cathedral over the trees, and thought
it a nice scene, although not the one made famous by Monet.

Re: The Photo Annual arrived in the Frostpit

2017-05-12 Thread Stanley Halpin
Apparently I will never know. The Book arrived this noon with no fanfare, so
the induction ceremonies etc. must have been handled quietly in a secret
location.

As I thought when I skimmed through the online preview, this is an amazing
piece of work. The photos themselves are simply and carefully presented without
extraneous embellishments on the page. The cover, the section intros and
dividers, and other insertions are a continuous series of PDML inside jokes,
written and visual. Those who have not been within the PDML sphere of influence
for more than a few years may not get many of the subtle jokes, but they can
still enjoy the consistent Newspaper theme throughout.

Thanks Mark for your artistry and your hard work, and thanks Doug and Bill for
assisting in this endeavor.

Re: PESO: Rouen Cathedral

2017-05-12 Thread Bob W-PDML
When I was in Rouen a few years ago they did some spectacular son et lumière
projections onto the facade of the cathedral, including Monet's paintings,
which was all very post-modern given that they were projecting multiple
versions of a simulacrum of a representation of the original onto the
reconstruction of the original.

Re: PDML's Avian Mascot - a very clever bird

2017-05-12 Thread Bob W-PDML
Beautiful plumage.

In England all cormorants are property of the Crown, and it's a crime to creep
up behind them with intent to frighten them, as the additional stress, over and
above that caused by knowing you're a cormorant, releases hormones which spoil
the taste of their flesh.

This law was enacted in 1342 as a result of the disastrous lamprey shortages of
previous decades caused by the lamprey pogroms that followed the unfortunate
death of Henry I. Cormorants replaced lampreys as the dish of choice on royal
tables.

Curiously the text of this law states that you must not 'ycreepit unto them
neither upon ye land nor yet 'neath Poseidon's murky realm', which suggests
that the medieval cormoranters were fully aware of these sublime creatures'
aural distinction.

As the pogrommers turned their attention to more traditional and easier targets
the lamprey population grew, and cormorant over-easy fell out of favour.
Instead of eating them, the bored English nobility took to baiting them, by
forcing them to wrestle with swans in disused real tennis courts. Fearing
revolution, for the peasantry saw this as a waste of two good sources of both
food and fertiliser, the aristocracy kept this so-called sport secret, and even
today it's said that Prince Harry is a great devotee. His favourite fighting
cormorant is called Pippa, reputedly, because in the Prince's own words "It's
the best shag I've ever had, ya".

Thanks, Paul. I agree with increasing
the quality of the black, including a bit more eye detail is always
critical for me and it sacrificed the

I actually don't feel this image would

PESO: Late Bloomer

2017-05-12 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I have planted many daffodils in our yard, with at least a dozen
varieties. I deliberately planted some that are early bloomers and some
that bloom late in the season. The last to bloom is the small, delicate
poet's narcissus, that appears just as the mid season blooms are
disappearing. Because of this, and its attractive color scheme, it is one
of my favorites.
