IIRC Minolta got out of the scanner business before Apple went to Intel.

As it's USB you should be able to use it with an old OS in a virtual machine on
modern hardware. My experience with USB devices on Virtualbox is that it was a
bit fiddly to set up but it worked very well.

Your other choices are Vuescan, or an old machine (PPC Mac or Windows). I had
to keep old hardware as my scanner is Firewire.

Cheers,
Dave

FS Friday: Minolta film scanner

2018-01-19 Thread Mark Roberts
It's a Minolta Scan Dual IV in excellent condition with box & packing.
3200dpi, USB connection
Includes carriers for 35mm slides and negatives
Also, all software & drivers... which unfortunately won't work with
modern operating systems (at least in the Microsoft world - don't know
about Mac). I've been using it with VueScan with great results.

Anyway, it's $99.00 plus shipping.

Re: Ping

2018-01-19 Thread John
We got about 4" of snow on Wednesday. Started as flurries at about 10:30
am and was coming down in BIG, WET flakes by the time I had to go out
around 12:30pm, tapering off after midnight. Overnight temperatures in
the low 20s.

Almost everything shut down, but fortunately not the VA clinic where I
had a doctor's appointment on Wednesday afternoon.

I had a notice from the library that a book I asked for was waiting for
me to pick up. The library was closed by the time I got there after my
doctor's appointment. I think it was probably closed all day.

After that, I just stayed home. Went out and walked around the block
after midnight and took a few photos, mostly the Baptist Church around
the corner. Don't know that I like any of them very much. I'd have had
to get out in the car to get anywhere that I'd have subjects that
interested me.

We had pretty good melting on Thursday, but all the government offices
(including the library) were still closed. What didn't melt off the
roads on Thursday appears to have mostly melted today.

The library was finally open again, so I went and got my book.

Re: PESO: Spider Family

2018-01-19 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Tarantula is one of the fascinating creatures that I don't like much to be
close to. I haven't seen them in the wild, while we do get a few scorpions
here occasionally. (About half an year ago I found a tiny one dead on the
floor in the utility room. And long time before, I saw one or two in the
drive way.)

Thanks for the reference to brown recluse. I didn't know about them being
venomous. I had to look at how to distinguish them. It turns out that one
of the most reliable ways is by (literally!) looking in his/her eyes!

(well, maybe not in, but at...)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse_spider#Description
Apparently, these species have only 6 eyes, unlike most others that have
8.

 David Mann Thu, 18 Jan 2018 21:55:54 -0800 wrote:

The only things I kill without mercy are female mosquitoes, any other
unwelcome guests I capture and take outside.

Dave,

I hear you. I do similarly, but I kill all mosquitoes and flies.

How do you distinguish female mosquitoes? By the sexy sparkles in the
eyes? ;-)

I know that only female ones buzz and bite, but I treat all mosquitoes
equally. :-)

Most of the time, I also kill what I call "two-tails" (as my parents
called them in my childhood). There are two types of species
that fall under that category: One is usually called earwig
("ear-twister" in Russian), or formally Dermaptera.
The second one is the actual species with the "two-tails" name (in
Russian), which is Diplura, sometimes called in English "two-pronged
bristletails",

Apparently, there are some myths about those (like they target your ears,
etc.) I don't know for sure, but it sounds like they do bite. Often, they
can survive being flooded and sent down the drain in the bath tub, where
they are frequent. So, I usually flush them in the toilet (but
occasionally they stay afloat.

I relocate lizards, and most of the spiders to the outside.

Igor
