PESO: Clinton Mills

2020-04-18 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I have been enjoying Dale Cook's images of Old Mills.

We don't have as many in my neck of the woods, but there are a few that are
interesting and historic.

The two here are in Clinton, NJ, just a few miles west of my home. The Red
Mill, a 4 1/2 story grist mill dating from 1810, is reputed to be the most
photographed structure in New Jersey. It also serves as a venue for
weddings and other events. The Old Stone Mill, directly across the South
Branch of the Raritan River, was originally built in 1763, and supposedly
ground wheat for Washington’s army during its encampment in Morristown. It
is currently an art museum.

Thanks , it’s a nice picture. I’ve had a print of it on my wall for about 40
years. It’s from a summer when I went hitch-hiking in Europe with a girlfriend.
We slept on the beach there for a few nights, somewhere on the coast between
Sete and Gruissan, I think - the shot was taken early one morning. Or maybe it
was an evening, I forget.

Most Germans could write books about the mess the whole German parcel
business has been in for years. Things went from bad to worse when
Amazon started their Prime scheme and their parcels now have to be given
priority. Whenever the driver sees that things are getting a little
tight on the day, he simply stops delivering all the other parcels and
takes them back to his depot at the end of his shift. This way, the
online tracking may show that your non Amazon Prime parcel passes in
front of your door for several days before it's finally delivered. Or
things simply don't move somewhere along the way for a week and then
magically reappear.

Our supermarket chains also offer home delivery. You can chose on their
websites when you want your stuff to arrive. The earliest available
dates are currently in two to three weeks.

I've bought a used Durst F30 enlarger on ebay. The head can be removed
and there's an ordinary 1/4" screw behind it, so the camera can be
mounted without any further modification.

Also in the mail is a reversal ring PK to 49 mm. I'll report as soon as
all has arrived.

Don't hold your breath, though. Parcels take ages right now, over here.
The monitor I've bought over two weeks ago is still on the way from

The verticals are the pickets of the fence I was shooting through. I could crop

Re: Scanning old negs

That's a very interesting approach, Bob! I'll be interested to see what kind of
results you get from it.

I have a similar device for my Minox 8x11 and 35GT-E cameras. I hadn't thought
of adapting the device to one of my digital cameras for use scanning sheets of
negatives.

I do have the Leica BEOON … essentially a small, dedicated copystand for Leica
M with extension rings enabling you to use a 50mm lens and capture 1:1, 1:1.5,
1:2, and 1:3 sized negatives (or positives) with a 50mm lens. It works
remarkably well with a Summicron-M 50mm or Color Skopar 50mm lens, stopped down
to f/11, and includes a focusing viewfinder (because it presumes a Leica M or
LTM body without TTL viewing). I've used it on a number of negative captures,
adapted to Sony A7, Leica M-P, and Leica M-D bodies and it does a very nice
job. Hmm: I should try it for singleton captures of 35mm film frames using the
CL body at the 1:1.5 magnification setting. It might crop a little on a 35mm
negative or slide. It'll be a fun exercise.

Old Water-Powered Mills of Southwestern VA (Preliminary Photos)

2020-04-18 Thread Dale H. Cook

I have posted the initial version of my Old Mills page at:

https://plymouthcolony.net/photos/pages/mills.html

The initial photos are all of old water-powered mills in Floyd Co., VA.
All of the photos except for Mabry Mill (which was taken last year) are
preliminary photos, taken on a cloudy day scouting trip last Tuesday to
get a feel for what I'm doing. One objective is to show the mill wheel,
if it is still there. Another is to give an indication of the overall
physical condition of those mills. Of the mills photographed last
Tuesday only Vaughn's Mill is still operating. It was converted from
water to diesel power years ago, but still produces Indian Chief flour.
Water-powered mills, like covered bridges, are a vanishing part of our
history. After I complete my photographic survey of Floyd Co. mills
(which will include better photos taken on sunny days) I will explore
other counties near me in southwestern VA.

One option that I am considering adding is a set of maps so that other
folks can more easily find old mills that I have visited.

There's a lot of nice work in there.

Towards the end I started looking a little more closely at some of the lenses

Reinforces my belief that the photographer's eye is more important than an
expensive lens.

Still, I like my expensive lenses. I'll be glad when this shit is over & I can

Not very nicely but you could hear her for miles when she was climbing

Strangely, there is no such thing as a negative function in Lichtroom.
The accepted method seems to be to go into the 'curves' window and
simply invert the gamma curve. Sounds simple enough but has the
drawback that all other controls then work in the wrong direction.

The only other means is a plug-in called Negative Pro costing almost 100
euros.

Re: New[ish] K-3 has arrived.

2020-04-18 Thread Doug Brewer
My K3 served me well for several years and a grand shitload of shoots,
Peter. It has been replaced in the work force by a K1, but will ride in
my bag as a backup for the foreseeable future.

I bought it to replace my K7, and the UI was different enough to cause a
few perplexities. Once I got accustomed to it, though, it seemed quite
natural, enough so that I still have to think about things when using
the K1.

Here's hoping you enjoy using your new camera. I think you'll be pleased
with its product.

On 4/16/20 7:06 PM, P. J. Alling wrote:
I just picked up my new to me K-3, and I'm, well not miffed exactly, I
did order the Bargain copy.  It all works but isn't as pretty as the
K-5II I got from KEH about a year and a half ago. It would be called
brassed if the body shell were made out of brass.

Functionally it's fine though, and I like the handling but the UI is
going to take a bit of getting used to.  Enough like the K-5II to make
somethings very simple to do, enough different to be maddeningly
annoying when attempting others.

One thing I find annoying is the mode dial lock, the removal of the
metering pattern function to make the lock select-able seems utterly
unnecessary.  I've gotten used to just pressing the center lock button
to change mode on the K-5II, it never seemed particularly onerous to do
that to change the shutter speeds on the ZX-5n.  So I don't see the
actual point.

Aside from the control differences which I'll have to get used to, the
camera seems to handle well.  The weight difference seems
inconsequential when moving from the K-5II.  The K-3 doesn't start up
quite as fast as the K-5II, and takes a noticeably, (to me anyway),
longer time to wake up from sleep mode, but I haven't actually been out
doing any serious shooting except to test out some of the settings so I
don't know how annoying these small delays will be yet.

When some people raved about the grip I put that off to differences in
hand size, but it really is an improvement.  I can really tell the
difference switching between the cameras.

All in all I'm pretty happy so far.  The only fly in the ointment being
the more evident wear on the K-3 than there was on the K-5II when I got
it, but I guess you can't luck out all the time.

OT: First footsteps in BOOWU-M

2020-04-18 Thread Bob Pdml
The light-pad I ordered arrived about an hour ok, so I made my first
investigative foray into shooting negatives and slides with my M typ262, 50mm
Summicron lens and the BOOWU-M copy stand.

I shot some Kodachrome 25, Scala, colour neg and BW neg, all with the stand at
the A4 setting. Some of these were in their sleeve, some I took out. None of
them had glass on top to flatten them. That is something I need to get.

Out of curiosity I also shot one K25 slide, from France in 1979, at the A6
setting, cropped it in LR and auto-adjusted.

https://adobe.ly/2KfnGOv

I’m quite pleased with the results. They do what I wanted, which was to find a
quick way of making an index ‘contact’ print of a whole roll. I can catalogue
it in LR and file the slides and negs in a way that makes things findable when
I want to do a better scan of some of them, for family and friends. It also
makes them reasonably browsable, so I can see what I have after over 40 years
of photography.

This set-up won’t work for high quality individual scans because A6 is the
smallest 1:1 it can do. But there are plenty of ways to scan individual frames,
including my Nikon LS4000 if necessary.

I don’t know how to invert the negatives in LR on my iPad or iPhone, and I
don’t have a windows machine at the moment, but that’s quite minor - if anyone
does know, please spill the beans.

Nice atmosphere.

The great thing is, you can make things look like that in Photoshop now, so
global warming doesn’t matter anymore.
