GESO 2020 - 175-188 - GDG

2020-07-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
It'd been a long while since I used it: Since my arm is healing but still very
weak I needed something small and light to try taking some photographs on a
walk. Yesterday I pulled my Light L16 out of its box for the first time in a
year and a half, charged it up, and reinitialized it, installed the most recent
version of Lumen on macOS Catalina, and went for a walk with it.

It still makes me chuckle that this little camera in its case ...
  https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50141863536_da35431e5a_b.jpg
... is a 50Mpixel camera with a zoom FF equivalent of 28 to 150mm. It's only a
little bigger than a plus-sized iPhone 8.

I found 14 exposures from my walk yesterday that fit a theme of "Shape, Form,
Shadow, Color" that I liked. Here are four of them:

  https://flic.kr/p/2joToh5 Turret Windows
  https://flic.kr/p/2joPoT9 Beware of Dog
  https://flic.kr/p/2joPoXT Leaves Akimbo
  https://flic.kr/p/2joSagG Pavement Marking

For the rest, please visit the album on Flickr.com :
https://flic.kr/s/aHsmPzJmVn
Wheee! I am getting to the point of being able to use my arm again! I'll be on
the bicycle again soon! LOL!

Enjoy!

Heh, a lot of "new" stuff is designed to be discarded. On test equipment
mailing lists and sites I see a lot of young whippersnappers who don't
understand why they can't get service information for their late-model
digital oscilloscopes, and who don't understand that those late-model
'scopes were never intended for field repair. If those 'scopes break you
pay big bux for the factory to fix them ---IF--- the factory still
supports them. If they are not supported you throw them away and replace
them. Those young whippersnappers look down their noses at my analog
Tektronix and HP 'scopes, but my analog 'scopes do what I need them to
do, they do it very well, and if they break I can fix them. I use a lot
of vintage Tek, HP, and GR instruments for work and hobbies. I'm just an
old guy who likes stuff that can be fixed. That, of course, doesn't stop
me from buying new to get capabilities that I want, thus the K-70 (and I
don't drive a '60s car).

Re: lens repair

2020-07-22 Thread P. J. Alling
KEH might repair it.  Erik Hendrickson(?) at Pentaxs.com might be able
to repair it, he was able to fix my Vivitar S1 70-210 v3, if all that's
wrong is something mechanical.  I think picking up a new used version
from KEH might be the most economical solution. There really seems to be
a conspiracy to get us to discard anything that's not "NEW".

picking up an 18-270 for $200 from KEH?

It's frustrating, because I dropped the lens, spent a chunk of change getting
it repaired, then shortly thereafter bought the K-1 and had little occasion to
use it. Now that I'm trying to ride my bike more, that lens on the K-3 would
make a great travel kit on the bike.

2020-07-22 Thread P. J. Alling
I don't know, I think I'd buy it, a flippy screen is just something else
to break, though I can see it's usefulness in some circumstances.

The new Prism looks like it could be duplicated by just using a O-ME53
which I've been using since I got my *ist-Ds.  It's not perfect but it
does give a view pretty close to an LX with a standard prism finder.
Probably not the highest viewfinder magnification, but good enough.

I'm just glad that they haven't abandoned the high end APS-C DSLR segment.

Re: Shutter problem

2020-07-22 Thread P. J. Alling
It sounds like half the problem with my original K-5II.  It would do
something like that about 1/3 of the time it malfunctioned.  It started
out just missing an entire color channel recording a magenta image, then
the mirror started to filp but the shutter wouldn't cycle.  Then the
mirror would lock up none of the other controls would operate, pulling
the battery would reset everything and it might decide to record an
image normally or magenta, or it might just start not cycling the
shutter or might lock the mirror on the next shot, not predictable in
the least at that point.

I managed to get it into diagnostics mode but the error codes were
especially unhelpful, and as I've reported it was less expensive to buy
a replacement from KEH than get it repaired.  I expect that probably
wouldn't be true of a K-1, but I couldn't tell you for sure.

Unless you can get the camera into diagnostic mode, and get a listing of
the English language translations of the error codes, it looks to me
like a trip to Precision Camera Repair, (barf), or some other reputable
repair facility is in your K-1's future. That trip is probably true
anyway as repair is likely to require a procedure I wouldn't want to
attempt without access to a clean room.

In case you're wondering a diagnostic from PCR was $319.00 and KEH.com
said they'd do one for $300.  At the time they both advertised that that
cost came off the top of the repair if you decided to have them do it.

The big advantage of High Sierra is that it is able to read APFS drives.

I forget which version of OSX breaks a lot of things (like LR6) so that they no
longer run on it.

Lately, OSX seems to follow the trend of iTunes where every new version seems
to add a little bit more suck, but they mess things up so that you're forced to
change.

There is a follow-up video from Ricoh/Pentax.
The new APS-C is claimed to have a new penta-prism, improved grip, new shutter,
better image quality and also a silver model (also for star lenses and K-1 mark
II)
No details on date of introduction.
I still have no clue on whether the back LCD panel is fixed or not.

At 20:21 in the 2nd video there's a good shot of the back. The LCD looks
(to me) to be fixed.

working. I've tried pulling the battery, all sorts of things. No luck. I got a
