Yes, quite true. Plenty of that in the "parks" along the streams in
town. Thank goodness it didn't happen in my driveway. Hippos are also
enthusiastic f*rters - they keep the rivers & dams (where the chill
during the heat of the day) well aerated.

Re: GESO (6) - Wet Weekend

Rick

The last substantial fall was 38mm on 22nd March. Nothing in April/May
but the weather has remained warm to hot with many days still in the
30's so everything has dried out. The average total rainfall from May to
Aug over the last 10 years has been less than 10mm. Until the start of
the next rainy season in about Sept. it will be a case of just keeping
the garden alive by limited watering with potable water which is very
expensive. Most of the rain falls from mid-Oct. to mid-Mar. Sept. is the
best month for game viewing in Kruger because the trees have lost their
leaves and the game is forced to use the remaining low water drinking
spots. The "fall" occurs towards the end of the cooler weather just
before spring. Some tree species, notably the Mopanies, loose their old
leaves & grow new ones simultaneously.

About 2Km - 3 small dams. The town has numerous greenbelts along the
normally non-perennial stream watercourses. However, with the current
dismal maintenance of sewers & potable water networks by the Muni, most
flow a bit all the year round. Those in the northern part of town feed
the dams where the Hippos hang out during the day. At night they easily
make their way up the watercourses into town where the grazing remains
plentiful during the dry season. There have been accidents with cars (1
fatality) but no attacks that I know of. In the game reserves, Hippos
graze away from rivers & dams during the night too.

PESO x 2: Hippo Deposit

2021-05-30 Thread Alan C
A Hippo made a smelly deposit at our gate last night. No damage
fortunately. A couple of years ago they devoured the whole vegetable
garden in a yard across the street.

Re: PESO: Thatched Roof Mansion

2021-05-30 Thread Henk Terhell

Nice house, I like also the yellow bricks.
Thatched roofs are still around here too on some more expensive houses.
Reed is now imported also from China.
These roofs have to be maintained and replaced after 20-30 year by
skilled people.
Impregnation by sodium silicate or other coating is done to minimise
fire risk.

Yes. With no ceilings & the large air space they keep the houses
cooler in summer & warmer in "winter". Virtually all the buildings in
the Kruger Park have thatched roofs. There have been some fires over
the years, notably the extensive shopping complex at Letaba Camp last
year. They are currently operating from a large marquee.

In the 1990's large thatched roof houses became popular in

exchange rate is about 15 which shows just how much the economy has
deteriorated. Because the economy is so depressed such a house will
probably sell for as "little" as R2M today - a bargain if you can
afford it. These houses have subsequently gone out of favour because
of high roof maintenance costs & the danger of fire (I can think of
2 caused by internal electrical faults, not lightning because they
all have tall lightning arrestor poles.)

Very interesting.   I suspect that the thatch roofs are, however,
very good insulation.

Re: OT - Golden Vanity

2021-05-30 Thread Steve Cottrell
Sorry to see that John, and about your friend that passed.

I was discussing the pandemic with a friend and we both think that the
ramifications of it will last one entire decade. EG it will be 2030 before
people start saying ‘oh yeah the coronavirus - man that was a shit time’……
