Re: ME Super ASA dial

Yep.. it works!!! The first roll of film I put in did not take because I did
not have it wound up right on the spool. But now I know that when it is in
correctly
the rewind thing on the other side winds when you advance the film and the red
flags move too.
this is really a neat camera!!

Rebecca,

Absolutely correct!

And it is a nice camera, still impressive after all these years.

Re:eBay auctions was ME Super ASA dial

2001-07-08 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Hi Tom,
On this item I was actually shocked to have won it so easily and for so less.
I put up a proxy bid of 90 dollars and figured I would be out bid. Sometimes
I wait til the last minute to post a bid but this time I could not.
I am guessing that no one wanted this item because of the way the ad read
but I ended up getting it for 71 dollars and it is in perfect condition other
then that ASA button sticking.
here is the actual listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1250172299r=0t=0sh
owTutorial=0ed=994027668indexURL=0rd=1

I am not sure if you will be able to get to it with this addy but maybe if
you did a search
at ebay on the item number it will come up.
Item number: 1250172299

The ad read:

This is an older Pentax ME Super camera with case, flash and cleaning kit.
It is in very good, working condition. The only damage it has is a bent
lens cover which screws off and can easily be replaced--it reads Vivitar
49mm Skylight(1A). The bent part in no way affects the way the camera
operates. The lens reads, ASAHI Optical Co., SMC Pentax-M 1:2 50mm 8783984.
It comes in a case with a flash AF24OZ. Please feel free to ask questions.
Shipping is $6 plus insurance if you'd like. Thank you!

So I am guessing that it may at one time have been dropped or something
because of the bent part. But I have to say that it functions WONDERFULLY!!
I havent gotten the pictures back just yet, they should be done wed or
thurs. I will let ya'll know how they turned out.

There are other auctions that I have bid on and lost out too. I just
happened to get very lucky with this one.

I have downloaded the manual from Roberts tech page but on it
it shows this dial as having a red light that flickers when

RE: Difficult decisions

2001-06-28 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with my dilemma. I think I may have
solved it. (i hope)

I was playing around with my ZX50 and I put the Focal 80mm-200mm lens on it
and the Achiever
dedicated auto focus 260 flash on and then set the focusing to manual and
the dial up top to
picture. Well.. low and behold the flash fired.
So I am going to test this out some and see what happens. I know that the
ZX50 wont do the metering
correctly but hopefully I should be able to set the lens to a certain fstop
and see what happens.
Maybe I will do that today. I will let ya'll know what happens when I get
the film back. Also I am
going to record every dog gone shot I take so that I can learn how to make
this outfit work together
as one.

Difficult decissions

2001-06-27 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Hi everyone,

Well, I have thought and thought about how to go about doing this.
You see, I have a huge dilema and I am driving my husband nuts on
what to do. I want to be able to take good shots of indoor TKD tournaments
and
also just use the camera for ordinary things too. The equipment I have
is:
Auto Focus:

ZX50 Pentax Auto Focus Camera w/ 35-80mm lens that came with it.

2x AF Teleconverter Quantaray

Achiever 260AF Flash

Manual Lenses:

28mm 1:2.8 Focal MC Auto

80mm-200mm 4.5 Focal Macro

135mm 2.8 Hanimex

75mm-200mm Sakar Macro 1:3.8X

Screw Mount:
SP1000 Pentax Screw mount w/ 55mm 1:2 Takumar lens

Today I went to a Photo store to try to find out what the Manual lenses
were worth. Well we got to talking and they think that I should get a
different camera body for these lenses and use them. But.. I really like my
ZX50 not just because it has auto focus and other thrills on it but .. well
I just like it..
Anyhow.. I truly feel that I should sell these other manual lenses.. all
except for the screw mount cause I really like it too. and invest in one or
two lenses to use with my ZX50.. one of the things that I want to get away
from is changing out lenses when I am shooting something.. It would be nice
to just use one lens for everything. but then again.. I dont have 2,000 or
more dollars to spend on something like that either.
Bascially all I am shooting is tournaments and my younguns doing silly
stuff. Sometimes at the tournaments I am not very close to the subjects and
my 35mm-80mm just does not get close enough, even with the teleconverter.
Also, I have used the manual lenses on the ZX50.. outside the pictures turn
out wonderful but inside is a totally different story.. and I havent a clue
as to a good manual flash to use when they are on the ZX50.. the AF260 will
not work when I have these lenses on it. So.. I am kinda lost.. I have
looked at all the advice I have gotten from ya'll about the different
flashes and it has helped but.. I still feel clueless.

Why this email to the group? well I am hoping and praying ya'll can give me
some really great advice here. yes it would be nice to have another camera
body but in all reality why should I spend more on a body? because then I
would have to get the winder too that advances the film. and that would be
something else to worry about not functioning correctly.

As you can see I feel like I am going in circles.
Would someone be willing to try to tell me how much these 4 manual lenses
are worth, individually? I sure would appreciate it. And also.. how much is
to much to spend on a Me or Me Super?

Any help or light at the end of a very dark tunnel ya'll can send me sure
is appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Rebecca
p.s. this email may not read real easily cause i kept thinking of more
questions to put in as i reread it.

I have another question for ya'll though.

Does anyone have this lens Pentax SMC-FA 80-320mm f/4.5-5.6 AF Zoom Lens?

If so do you like it? Can you use it inside much? I dont mean a really dark

Does it take a long time to focus?

screw mount adaptor

Hi,

I have a quick question. I have been looking around to find
a adaptor for this new screw mount camera I have so that
I can use the bayonet type lens that I have with it.

My question is.. is there such a thing? and if so .. what
is it called? I can not seem to come up with anything
other then the use your old screw mount lens on your new
bayonet mount camera. And I need it for the other way
around.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Still unpacking...

2001-06-20 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Hi everyone,

Well we are almost done unpacking, I had to stop to get some dental work done.
But I am trying to keep up with the messages.. only about 420 to go.. LOL...

Anyhow, my sister has been unpacking her place and she found the camera I told
ya'll about a few months ago. I am so very excited about it. It needs some
cleaning
on the outside but a friend of mine who knows alot about cameras looked at
it and
said that it was beautiful inside. And I have to agree with him cause I was
sitting
there looking at it with him and there is not a speck of dust or corrosion
anywhere
on this camera... (I am very grateful that she took out the battery before
she packed it away)
except for the carrying strap. It is pretty old leather and I will
most definately have to replace it.

OK so.. here is what my sister, handed over to me...

ASAHI Pentax
on top it has these numbers 5766776 SP 1000
it is a screw mount camera and she so far has only found
this one lens. which all this time since about .. hmmm 1980 or so
has been put up.. it had a filter on it that when she first showed
it to me I thought oh no.. (I didnt realize it had a filter) its
ruined.. but when she took off the filter the lens on the inside
is beautiful.. it is a SMC TAkumar 1:2/55 Asahi OPT. CO., Japan.
When looking through this lens it has a circle in the center for focusing,
it is really neat. And when you move the f stops you can actually see
in the view finder it lightening and darkening.
I ran a roll of film through it but I have not gotten them back yet.
I cant wait to see how they turn out.

Well back to unpacking..

Re: PUG: D Ross, S Larson, R Lane

2001-06-12 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Thanks Lasse, I am glad you liked it.
When I took the picture, I was sort of thinking Old stuff and New stuff
hmm... might turn out
ok. You see I had just gotten in a couple of filters and lens and I was
dying to try them out. So my sister
and I went out to the Fort where we go fishing and I walked around the fort
while she fished. It was
pretty late in the day and the sun was about a hour from going down. So I
was out there shooting with
every lens I had and I actually recorded it all, for a change. It was alot
of fun, but I didnt really
think that I was trying to say anything with the picture. When I scanned it
and then cropped it, I
thought that looks neat, so that was the one I sent in. Also, in paint
shop I sharpened it (I think twice
if I remember right) and that may be why it looks like a hand tinted bw
picture. I am not sure.

I am glad you like it.
Thanks again,
Rebecca

Rebecca Lane: Old and New

I like this picture. It presents an interesting and unusual cropping - a
landscape panorama crop where the content, (it's lack of symmetry and rest
points etc) is not what you usually get in this format. The colours are
also rather off (I guess) compared to what it looks like in real life. It
almost looks like a hand tinted bw picture.
Frankly, I don't really know what to make of it. It raises many questions
(a quality that I generally like, both in artistic expressions or in life
in general.) I ask myself if this is the result of a very deliberate
artistic statement, or if you just went by some gut feeling of at one point
simply deciding I like it this way. (And it really doesn't matter at all;
I find it refreshingly original.) One could discuss other ways to crop the
picture, change the picture format, adjust the colors, but any different
cropping would change the impact dramatically. And since I have no idea of
what you want to say with this picture, I wouldn't dare to suggest any
improvements of it. (However, since it's so easily done, you could do
some alternate (cropping) takes. Save them all, and at a later time go back
to them to see what you think of them.)
All in all, an interesting and different take.

Lasse

Re: EB: 500/1.8 !?

2001-05-25 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

I sent questions to the seller and asked

Q. How long is this lens?
A. it is 14' long (i am assuming she means 14")

Q. What is the filter size?
A. Measured filter size is 2 1/2 inches

Q. How much does it weigh?
A. I'm not good at guessing weight, but not very heavey..I am sure it can be used with or without tripod

I should have asked her about the 1.8 but I was rushing out the door getting the kids to school when
I emailed her.

So assuming these answers are all correct, does this sound like a good lens?

The short answer is no. The long answer is: it can, but isn't necessary.
Here's what I would have done differently in that situation: manual focus
(since girls were fairly far way in a group), smaller aperture (more
dependence on flash's light to freeze action and light image and allow
greater depth of field).

The shooting scenario you describe could be accomplished with a manual
focus, manual exposure, 1/60 X synch auto flash setup. A PZ1p would
probably do no better, in the end, because alas it's focus system is not any
faster than a ZX series (some consider it slower). But even with a fast AF
camera, the problems of shutter lag still exist. One feature the PZ1p
offers over the ZXn is the servo AF mode, where AF focus is attempted, but
not a necessity before picture taking. This helps with slowing the shutter
lag, but the least shutter lag happens on non-AF cameras.

Are you enabled? :)

Subject: Will upgrading to PZ1p from ZX50 improve pictures?

Greetins friends! I recently took five rolls of slide pictures of my
daughter dancing with other members of ballet school. Pictures were taken
with flash as it was a dress reharsal. Lighting was very poor. Exposure
without flash was f2.8 and 1/90 sec. Fifty percent pictures came OK. I
used
ZX50 with FA 135mm f2.8 lens external Pentax 220T flash and Provia 1600
ASA slide film. I used aperture priority system. Aperture was f2.8. I was
about 50 to 60 feet from my daughter. I checked the flash expossure with
OK
 check light at back.

I had noticed two problems. [a] During dance the girls [about 10-12 girls]
were moving around the stage. Sometime my daughter was half hidden by
other
dancers. Will the camera with spot focus like ZX5n or PZ1p [if PZ1 or PZ1p
has spot AF] will help in this situation? How quick the spot AF compared
to
AF speed of ZX50. AF focusing of ZX50 is very fast.
[b]I was afraid of camera shake with 135 mm lens plus external flash.
Highest flash sync speed of ZX50 is only 1/100 sec. Will PZ1p with higher
sync. speed will help? Flash light duration is very small. Does it matter
whether flash sync. is 1/100 or 1/250 sec regarding camera shake.

 With thanks.

Re: Pictures of a TaeKwonDo demo

2001-05-17 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Hi Artur,

A little blur adds life to the scene, therefore it's not always good to
avoid it when the subject is very dynamic. You should definitely get that 50
mm f/1,4 or 1,7 lens. It would help you isolate the subject from the
background on the wider apertures (it would move the background from the
DOF) - on some of the pics the main subject cannot be easily distinguished
from the crowd and the background draws a bit too much attention:) The other
thing is that the pics appear a bit underexposed but this can be caused by
the scanner...

I wonder if using the polarizer could have caused it to be underexposed too?
Where I was standing was underneath a tent thingy, that provided shade for
some of the people eating. So I probably did not need it. Hmm.. I didnt think
of the background being so in focus. I think I will check into this other lens
but it will have to wait a few months. Which is ok. He doesnt do a whole lot
of demos during the summer time.

Perhaps some flash light would have helped...(I mean some strong, external
flash, not the built-in one:))
A pretty good timing in taking the shots:) I especially like two jumping
side kicks (Dwimyo Yop Chagi) - the first one - solo, and the second one -
with braking the wooden board (Kyokpa).

Ya know even though I have practiced this for over 2 years I still do not
know all the Korean terms for the different kicks.

Has ITA anything in common with the ITF? I train ITF taekwondo in Poland,
although currently have a long pause, because of a serious ankle injury...

No, I believe the ITA is a branch all to itself. They do have a school over
in
England, but I dont think they have spread much further then that.
I can understand such a long pause because of injury. My husband broke his
ankle
at work last year and he had to lay out for about 4 months. He was very very
hard to live with at the time. LOL... When ever the kids and I would go to
class
he would sit in the lobby like a sad little puppy wanting to come out and
play. :-)

possibly a faster lens - a 50 mm f1.4 would give you 3 or 4 stops over
the lens you used. Though the suggestion of movement of the person
being kicked in the picture lar3.jpg looks good. One stop higher in
speed would probably have stopped the kicker and still had the kickee
moving.

Your timing for the shots appear to be excellent, as is your framing.

I'm not into sport as a rule but I can appreciate the pictures.

Re: Pictures of a TaeKwonDo demo

2001-05-17 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Hi Dave,

ITA style, huh? I think that was my style, but I was doing it before
the split.

Yes, it is ITA, we have been with them for a little over 2 years now.

The pics are good, but you need either faster film or a faster lens.
Get a 50/1.4 or 1.7 or a 35/2 (probably better) and you'll be amazed
at the sharpness you can pick up.

I didnt realize that there were faster lens then others. From what
you are saying here, I am guessing that the lower the fstop the faster
the lens? I thought the higher the shutter speed is what made them fast?

Your composition is excellent for these - you're filling the frame
with action which is the way to go.

The jumping back side kick (i've forgotten all my korean) pics are
superb: you've got the moment of contact. A martial arts mag will
have a 'just breaking the board' shot, but I bet they chuck one roll
of film through an Eos-1 at 10-fps just for that.

I probably should have set the camera to take more shots per second but
I had it set on one at a time. Unfortunately I also tried to change lens
when I had time and when I went to click the picture I kept hearing a beep...
beep...beep.. and then the shutter went off. I could not figure out what it
was so I changed lens back to the one that came with the camera and it
did it again. So I started checking all the dails I had accidently
switched from one picture mode to the timed picture thing. Man I was upset.
At least now I know what it sounds like when I set the timer. :-)

Pictures of a TaeKwonDo demo

2001-05-15 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

I finally got some pictures up that I took a couple of weekends ago.
When I got the film back and looked at the pictures I could have kicked
myself in the head. I used 400 ISO instead of using 800 and most of the
pictures turned out blurry.

Any helpful comments or hints are sure appreciated.

Re: PUG commentary: Rebecca Lane

2001-05-03 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Thanks Paul,

Ya know this being my first entry and being new to the list I didnt realize
that the pictures were going to be commented on, I am truly grateful though
that
they are. You have given me a lot of things here that I never thought of.
1. I didnt do alot of editing to the pic, with the exception of resizing it.
2. In the picture here the closest guy is focused more, but you can still see
the expression of the other more clearly.
3. I need to not be so shy around these ppl and get in there and shoot
where I want. (as long as I am not interferring)

There are several things here that will help me out at the next tourny.
The flash was just the flash that was on the camera. I am working on getting
a bounce flash that will flash in manual mode, but I am kinda waiting on
my sisters things to get here because she has pentax equipment that she
has not used in a long time. I am hoping it comes down with her other things
next friday. I get to go through it and see what she has :-)

I am really glad that ya'll do this, it will help me out in learning how
to make my pictures better.
In this picture, what had happened is that the guy facing the camera had
started to do a jump kick, well the other guy facing away from the camera
saw this and just stuck his foot out with a side kick and it got the first
guy in the chest, but since he was in the air fixing to do a jump kick when
he came down from it, the kick also slid up and got him on the chin.
One of the things I am working on is to try my best to get
a picture at the moment of impact. I do spar with some of these guys so I do
know some of their moves, but dog gone it is still really hard to see
something
coming, especially when you are looking through the viewfinder.

Rebecca Lane, Ouch!
You have managed to capture what was apparently a significant moment in
this event and an expressive response from the offended party, who was
apparently kicked in the stomach or thereabouts. That's a good start. As
I think you realize, the picture is a bit soft: It lacks sharpeness
and definition. This could be the result of an incorrectly focused lens
(whether it be manual or autofocus), camera shake, or simply a bad scan.
Without a lot of evidence to to go on, I'd say it's the lens focus in
this case. It appears that it may have been focused at a distance
shorter than the closest fighter. The electronic flash pretty much rules
out camera shake, since flash duration is short enough to overcome a bit
of the jitters. In terms of composition, the photo would have been more
effective and informative if you could have positioned yourself around
to the left, say about 90 degrees counterclockwise from where you were.
Then you would have captured the response and the impact. It would also
have framed up a bit nicer, I believe. The background may even have been
improved, since it would have been filled with the other contestants.
It's always a good idea to plan your vantage point as carefully as
possible and consider what both the subject and the background will look
like. I'm not fond of electronic flash lighting for this type of shot
both because of the way the foreground blows out and the background
lighting falls off. If you could have bounced it off a ceiling or
reflector it would have been better. You might also consider using
high-speed black and white film and available light. In typical
gymnasium lighting, you can usually shoot at 1/250 second with 3200 asa
BW film. You might even be able to achieve 1/500 with a fast lens set at
an aperture of f4 or so. You'll need some depth of field, even if the
contestants are equidistant from the lens. In summary, a good first
effort.

June PUG

2001-05-03 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Hi ya'll,

I have a question about the June PUG.
Can it be any type of building, old or new?
Falling apart or not?

I live pretty close to an old Fort and I think that
I may get some pictures of it and see if any are
worth submitting.

Are there different filters for mf cameras and af cameras?

2001-04-27 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

I just got home from going out and pricing polarized circular filters.
Well, I went to Camera America and told the guy what I was looking for.
He asked me if it was for a auto focus or manual focus camera. And I told him
that I have a ZX50 that I use in both modes. Also that most of the lens I have
do not work with the auto focus, so I use them all on manual focus. One of the
filters was for 17 dollars (manual focus)and the other 30 dollars (auto
focus).
Well he began telling me that I could not use these lens on my ZX50 because
they
were not AF lenses.
I have taken pictures with them and they have turned out wonderful. So I am
not understanding why he would say this. He said that they would not work
with
the TTL, ok.. I understand that. But still the pictures are turning out great.
Anyhow, I ended up leaving the store feeling pretty bad. Because now I have
these
lenses that I dont know if they will hurt my camera.
Also, why would you have to buy a auto focus filter when you use the camera in
manual most of the time?
I hope ya'll can shed some light on this for me.
Here is the equipment that I am using, please, if any of them sound like
they will injure my camera let me know:

Camera Body ZX50

Pentax 35-80mm f4-22 (came with the camera)(works with the auto focus and
manual focus)

Hanimex Automatic 135mm f2.8-16 (i have to use manual to focus this one)

Quantaray 2X AF Teleconverter for Pentax (i use this on manual focus)

Focal MC Auto 1:2.8 f=28mm MK84713519 (this came with another lens that i
won on ebay, i dont see any name brand on it but they had a KMart paper
with them. i typed out what was on the lens)(i have to use this on manual
focus)

Mitakon MC Zoom 1:4.5 f=80-200mm (this is the one the above came with)(i
have to use this on manual focus)

Sakar Macro 1:3.8X 75-200mm f4.5-22 PK-A/R (this one has a Green A where
the fstops are. I also dont understand what it means by Macro 1:3.8X) (i
have to use this on manual focus)

(the only one that will work with my auto focus is the one that came with
the camera.)

Also, I was thinking that I really dont need 2 lenses that are 200mm, but I
have no idea of which one to get rid of. I have not had time to shoot a
whole lot of film with them but what I have shot I do like.
I know this is alot of questions but any help sure would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rebecca

I dont want to get anything that would damage what I already have.
Also I have been looking at a Vivitar 550, how does this one
compare to the 285HV and 283?

Thanks everyone for helping me,
I dont think I will be looking at the 283.
I am in no hurry to rush out and nab something that may
damage the camera I have.

What I am looking for though is something that will
shoot in manual mode, with a fast recycle time and
a nice shooting distance. I have the ZX50, so if anyone
has some ideas please send em this way.

changed addys

2001-04-12 Thread B. K. Lane Sr.

Just a little tip - People on this list prefer plain text messages but are
too polite except me to say so. Yours are coming up as HTML.

Just click Format Plain text if you are using MS outlook - if using
something else then have a search through the menus to see if you can find
 the option.

Thanks Peter,

I didnt realize aol was doing that. It is ok though I can get mail here at
netzero too.
So I just unsubscribed from the aol addy and subscribed to this one.

Thanks for telling me,
