Divide by zero error. There's no such thing as "photographic commonsense".

Anyway you don't pick lenses using math. You take them out on dates to
see if you're compatible. It's more an emo thing.

I prefer the first. Something harmonious about it.
The 2nd is out: distractions in the frame.
The 3rd is okay, but loses to #1.

Re: PESO - Bridge

2016-04-03 Thread Bruce Walker
It is a "standard" (though advanced) yoga pose. Molly is apparently
demonstrating excellent form here, though I was unaware of it before
Googling. :)

I have the name wrong too: this is the "upward facing bow" or "wheel"
pose, aka Urdhva Dhanurasana. Supposed to be very healthy to do,
though I don't think I'd recover from the attempt, myself.

Thank you, Ann!

Lack of shadows? Take another look. :) Mucho shadow there, especially
in the lower third.

As for retouching: I know. I have two prints of before and after on
Joan Crawford. Six hours of working with a pencil on the negative by
the retoucher, and the glam polish is there.

Now that meticulous retouching applied much less to older women that
he photographed. He did not turn them into freaks, just reduced and

serious retouching to my wife who is in her mid 70's -- shh!

I have the definitive book on the man and his work, and I have studied
it thoroughly. "George Hurrell's Hollywood: Glamour Portraits

others and he documents his various "periods" and the lighting and
retouching techniques he employed. Other than using gridded silver
reflectors rather than fresnel spots I followed the way he worked
during the 1940's very closely.

I'm not sure where you are seeing this one, Jack. I only uploaded a
single shot to my portfolio site (http://portfolio.brucemwalker.com/)
and it's untouched since I put it there a couple of weeks ago. So,
same image. :)

I have a lot of trouble with shots like this appearing the same to all
viewers, especially shadows and highlights. All the different LCD
displays apply their own gamma curves, and some are different
depending on viewing angle.

Re: PESO - b portrait of my wife as a Hollywood star

2016-04-01 Thread Bruce Walker
Agreed; it could use more fill in the lower part. I was trying to get
more from the white reflector and got about 2/3 stop less than I hoped
for. But my wife prefers the dark and the shadows, so I left it as-is
rather than pull it up in post. Tons of latitude in the raw, so it
would have been a simple curves tweak.

Thank you very much, Jack.

And thank you also Nicole, Darren, Mark C, Marco, Bulent and Paul, and
to everyone who looked.

Honestly, my wife has been reluctant to model for me. She is way
pickier than my other models and has forced me to work really hard to
get to the point where she's portrayed the way she wants to be seen.
She likes this one. :)

I have some tighter framed shots I have't processed yet. Pretty sure I
did a closeup like you're describing.

Yes, my workflow is to post-process entirely in colour then in the
final step convert it to b But we shot this set intending to have
them in b and we did not spend any time harmonizing the colours.
Colour was used to get specific tones in the b rendering, so the b
is significantly better than the colour raw.

Thank you very much, Larry!

Ann, I'm quite sorry to hear that! The folks at Photoshelter would
probably like to know what browser version you're using. They take
enormous pains to make their portfolio hosting work on all devices.
It's one of the few I found that display well on smartphones, tablets,
and desktop browsers.

You can see the shot on Facebook too, especially as we're linked up there.

You nailed it, Paul.

I tried to make minor adjustments to it and the results were all over
the map with tiny changes in the controls. And the UI was clearly
designed by somebody with no understanding of either UI design or Mac
s/w development.

The Epson s/w is by far the better choice, if imperfect.

Re: What grabbed me reading the specs

2016-02-20 Thread Bruce Walker
They give away a stripped-down version for the 645Z so will probably
do so for the K-1.

I wouldn't use it though. It transfers your images from the camera
directly to Lightroom bypassing the SD card altogether. If the USB
cable connection glitches or comes undone, you lose any images in
progress, or shot after that. Lose as in _gone_ ... poof.

I use an EyeFi card and xfer small jpegs for (almost) instant preview
on my iPad. Way more reliable, faster, and useful. My studio creative
teams love it.

These nylons, at least the teal ones (blueish) are the real deal. They
don't stretch like today's fabrics and like silk have to be carefully
pulled on to avoid tearing. Luckily the pair the stylist owns fit our

Re: GESO ~ Vintage unmentionables

2016-02-16 Thread Bruce Walker
Hey, Larry, thanks!

I agree with you re distracting hard edged shadows. As always with my
shoots I experiment and push my boundaries. In this shoot I wanted to
purposely mix soft and hard light and the risk is that I'd end up with
some fishy shadows. It depends on the angle of the light, the pose,
and what surface is opposite the subject from the light source. In
some shots it was all perfect, but in many I was not so lucky. I tried
to arrange the spill from the key hard light to land out of the scene,
but not always possible in a small set like we had.

But as it happens, this style of lighting is favoured by the fans of
this vintage genre, so they won't notice so much. And the better shots
were submitted to the mag. Most of them worked out better than these
ones did.

I learned much from this shoot and I'll be refining my technique for
the next, you can be sure. :)

GESO ~ Vintage unmentionables

2016-02-15 Thread Bruce Walker
Tiny, full-figured pin-up model Holly Harlott wears vintage bullet
bras, girdles, real nylons, and other dainties in this fun shoot I did
last Monday. Most of the shots have been submitted to a vintage fans
publication, but these extra ones are public.

One shot is a little NSFW as it's sheer black fabric over boobies.

http://off-axis.brucemwalker.com/post/139392504892/from-a-shoot-with-model-holly-harlot-stylist

645Z, both 55mm and 90mm macro, 100 ISO, mostly f:11, 1/125th sec.

Three lights in the most complex glamour style setup I've done to
date. Sheers used to create a giant 6 foot by 9 foot softbox, a 5 foot
stripbox for accenting, and a 7" gridded reflector for highlighting
model's face.

Styling by Julia of Gigi's House of Frills.
Makeup and hair by Judi Willrich.
Set design, lighting, photos and retouch by me.

Comments welcome, of course.

A most enjoyable gallery. Thanks once again, Brian.

Particularly loved Dario's People and Christine's Waiting -- great
symmetry in that.
Also have to mention P.J.'s Bench Seat, Rick's Huh?? and Darren's Long

I'm all for accepting the Ricoh GXR. We can treat it as a step

so why not?

Agreed, 110%.

A very large part of my career was built on optimizing. Cost, size,
weight, reliability, appearance, ... something. Especially cost. The
fewer lines of code the better, since bugs increase exponentially with
complexity. The fewer the components the better since that generally
drops the cost and increases MTTF.

Godfrey, you would do well to have a closer look at Silver Efex Pro.
Simulating film is but one of its special effects features, but for me
the real power of it lies in its black and white conversion tools. The
ability to increase contrast just in the midtones, or the coarse and
fine detail extraction tools are very powerful. The Soft Contrast
slider is a terrific tool. There are presets provided to let you
quickly try some different overall looks, but I also tend to avoid
them, preferring to build up my own from scratch.

It's true that everything you can do in Silver Efex Pro you can also
do in Photoshop with enough fiddling and time, but it's so much more
convenient to use SEP. Think of it like Lightroom versus Photoshop.
Same kind of creative enhancement and time saving.

I use Silver Efex all the time, but I almost never simulate film with it.

I'm not concerned about the possibility of a ToS change like that.
Anyone who has tried that in the past has been flayed alive by public
outcry.

And I find myself unconcerned by the possibilities of major changes or
even a shutdown at Flickr. It has played less and less of a role for
me as a work showcase in recent years, and its social functions are
much less useful than Facebook's.

If it were to disappear I'd barely notice, and I'm pretty sure I'm not

The photographer should never have submitted a hastily constructed
"just in fun" image to a contest, so they are both deserving of
ridicule. The photographer admits it was a joke and sort-of half-ways
apologized for the submission.

Okay, I see. But back in the early days of WiFi (circa 1998), I
connected two suburban offices together via rooftop mounted dishes and
two WiFi access points. The two offices were hundreds of meters apart,
separated by a number of streets, trees, etc. I did have line of sight
for good reception.

WiFi is usually local area only because of the short stubby whip
antennae. Add high gain dishes and you have long haul capability, up
to 50 miles with the right hardware. Dishes are not that expensive.

Cheers!

Did you view that image large? (just click on it.) I suspect you are
referring to the model's left nipple which looks a little like it's
floating out in space because of the high-key tonal curve pushing skin
tones way up into the whites. I noticed that smaller images, like the
thumbnail, look odd but viewing it at a decent size on a decent
monitor show you what's what.

Thanks, John.

Re: OT: Please Do Me a Favor

2016-01-21 Thread Bruce Walker
I use(d) LinkedIn to manage and host my resume, and it is(was) my
professional addressbook. As my link into The Old Boys Network I
indirectly got jobs through it. I use the present(past) tense as I'm
retired from IT but I still don't have my head fully around that. :)

But I hate the UI and its terrible builtin messaging. It's even worse
than Facebook. And the groups features - gah! Useless. It's just not a
very sociable social network.

I've been following the colour temp versus make it b thoughts here
and I have this suggestion.

Were it my shot, I'd adjust the WB slider to find the midpoint between
the window light colour temp and the tree illumination colour temp so
as to make the window light be still warm and the tree look blue
(rather than that anemic white). Take advantage of the differences to
contrast them, in other words.

Very cool, Darren. My wife tolerates a lot from me, even new lenses,
but she would draw the line if I ever mentioned roasting my own beans.

I had my mother upgraded to an occasional French press, and convinced
my father to stop using a stove top percolator, but they were tough
sells.

Yeah, kind of. The sock is like a white fabric shower cap that slips
over the beauty dish. The light spread goes from a narrow 45 degrees
to about 130 degrees. But it's still fairly specular because the dish
is silver. And the light is most intense in the center with strong
circular falloff.

I aimed it at the subject's head and set it about a stop or so less
than the strips. Gives a nice shine to her shoulders in this specific
shot, but more importantly when Rachel is facing us the beauty dish
fills in shadows on her face and avoids that intense, tough-guy look
that you get from split lighting that looks okay with men but is very
unflattering on women.

Thanks for commenting, Frank. Interesting how this image is polarizing
opinion fairly strongly.

I posted that rope shot just now; title Sinews.

And thank you Ann, Jack, Igor and Paul. Appreciate the feedback!

Re: OT - Q: how to link eBay account with Paypal?

2016-01-05 Thread Bruce Walker
That's encouraging, Ann. From experience I generally assume that phone
help is going to be pretty useless and a huge waste of time spent on
hold, so I don't go there.

Honestly though, based on having found hundreds of forum messages from
folks in the same boat, I'm going to just buy the lens I want from
another seller, North American based, who doesn't have this linked
restriction. It will cost me a bit more, but I think the source is a
lower risk anyway.

Looks like the eBay/Paypal split has created unresolved technical
issues. I'll just avoid this.

Thanks!

I spent some time on Paypal looking into that possibility. They don't

OT - Q: how to link eBay account with Paypal?

2016-01-04 Thread Bruce Walker
I know that there are lots of savvy eBay and Paypal folks on the list,
and there must be a fix for this stupid problem.

I'm trying to buy a lens from an eBay buyer who has stipulated that he
only sells to customers with a linked eBay/Paypal. So I go into my
eBay account settings, click "Link with Paypal", follow the prompts,
and ... nothing. Nothing except another browser tab open on eBay that
is. Account remains stubbornly unlinked. Support info is useless.
Forum is useless. Have tried three different browsers.

Anyone here been faced with this and got past it? Apparently sellers
can't collect if their account isn't linked to Paypal so it's a real
issue.

Thanks!

Re: OT - Q: how to link eBay account with Paypal?

2016-01-04 Thread Bruce Walker
That's the trouble though, Ann. During checkout with this one seller I
get a message that he has set the requirement that the accounts be
linked, and it cancels the transaction. I cannot purchase from this
guy unless I can link my Paypal with my eBay account.

I have an existing Paypal account; have had since the mid 2000's. I'm
sure it was linked up until eBay and Paypal split up.

And yes the Link With Paypal button is there, but when I use it I get
logged into Paypal, it tells me that the process is almost complete
and to click another button to go back to eBay, then nothing happens.
