My apologies for having to send this on a Saturday. I had emailed it on Friday,
but apparently to the wrong address.
I'm selling my copy of Gerjan's book that I bought from him on PDML back in the

isn't uncommon). My copy has some dust jacket damage, so I'm starting it off at
the moderately insane price of $199 CAN. For those of you in the US, that's
pretty much Monopoly money these days. The auction ends tomorrow, and the link

I'm also selling (not auctioning) a couple other books and a bunch of
brochures, literature, and odd items here:

with some trepedation - I have returned! :-)

Cataract surgery was May 2nd - only on my right eye - marked with a purple
arrow by a nurse. I can see clear_er_ but still not really clear as that
eye is also astigmatic and at the moment there is only plain glass in the
glasses I have on that side.

I was quite nervous beforehand, but it really was no big deal and rather
interesting to watch. My trepedation had much to do with being knocked out
and it ws local anesthetic and a sedative.

For all of you facing this - the improvement in color perception is terrif -
I can see those things in the shadows now, even though my other eye still
has a small cataract.

best of all, it had a definite positive effect on my glaucoma control.

(aside to Dan, 16-16 after surgery ) Doc said that happens in about 20% of
cases.

Only thing that is a bit hard to deal with is how very very drowsy the
medications post-op are making me. three different eye drops on a tight
schedule 4 times a day for a week, then 3, then 2, then once.
plus my twice a day glaucoma drops.

Big plus was my friend with benefits came down from Massachusetts the day
before and stayed for 5 days. One DOES need someone who is not stoned by
sedatives and post-op meds around for a bit. Especially if you are a cheap
drunk like moi - who doesn't drink at all, and hasnt been even slightly
sedated since 1995 after a car accident broke my back.

I was so wired -before_ the op that I was more "awake" than I though I'd be
the first day.

Turns out a friend's son , just by chance, was my nurse du jour before the
procedure, which was fun and comforting for me.

I swore I heard someone say "whose carving?" when I was wheeled into op
room, to which I replied "where's Alan Alda?" - this turns out tohave been a
total hallucination - my doc on second follow up was quite amused but
assured me no one had said _that_ and evryone in the op theatre was far to
young to catch the reference, not to mention the inappropriateness. I do
wonder what was said that became "carving" to my ear.

I actually watched the whole thing, in a way - you don't have any sense that
anyone is even touching you - very odd - and what I saw was like watching a
spaceship, lots of intersting colors, and so on. Unlike some friends who
thought that nothing had been done and asked when where they going to do
anything, I had specifically asked not to be heavily sedated, and I did know
something was being done and talked with the doc during it, who kept telling
me I was doing fine, as if I were a participant.

Then there was the nasty stuff afterwards - nono, not physical - financial!
If I had gotten the prescriptions that were written (It occured to me they
didn't know I didnt have the med thing on medicare) I simply would have been
unable to get them - close to $400 for those three little drops ... HOWEVER,
FWB got on the computer and got it down to $88 through Canada and we went
back to the hospital for the follow up on Friday the 3rd with papers... I
bet they thought he was a lawyer.

Suddenly, I got 3 new prescriptions for generic equivalent drugs that
brought my investment in drops down to $59 total. (I get my glaucoma drugs
free.) Now, even if your health insurance covers those obscene prices
(which, of course, are chicken-feed compared to those for really serious
illnesses) sheesh...

By yesterday I got to reading archived posts and was awfully pleased by

Doesn't this type of insurance just cover theft or accidental loss, like
fire? With all the klutzes in the world, I don't see how they could offer
insurance so cheap if they pay out for every little fumble that destroys an
insured object.

Hey, this should be the ultimate answer to the question "to add a UV filter
or not?". $30 for an insurance rider is a lot less money than UV filters to
guard all ones lenses.

Yesterday, upon the stair,

I wish, I wish he’d go away...

When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door... (slam!)

FS Friday: Brand-new Pentax Q kit with 8.5mm lens (47mm equivalent)

Hi, everyone. We're selling our last few black Pentax Q kits (with 8.5mm
lens) for $349.99 CAN. They're cute little cameras that remind me of the
Auto 110 I used to own:

http://pentax.ca/en/digital_slr/Q/

The small size and sensor make them useful cameras for macro work, and also
a lot of fun to carry around and shoot. Let me know if you're interested in
picking up one.

Luckily they really only make 2 DSLRs. :)

It sounds like Pentax Canada has been more open with retailers in the Great

lot fewer stores, Pentax has always been good to us. And we're just a
family-owned independent in Western Canada, not a national or international

$1999, so the Sony certainly isn't the only one.

The Sony A99V body currently sells for a "street price" of $2798. But
Adorama (and, I think, B&H) also have a bundle that includes the Sony
HVL-F60M flash (Amazon price $452 separately) and the Sony VG-C99AM Vertical
Grip (Amazon price $378 separately) for a grand total of
$2798 (the same price as the body alone!?!). That's $830 in accessories for
free, which effectively makes the body less than $2000
- which I think is the first time that one could say that.

2013-04-05 Thread Chris Brogden
Hi, everyone. Here's a great deal for this Friday! The Sigma 300/2.8 for

includes free shipping anywhere in Canada. Email me with your ZIP code for
a quote for US shipping.

The Sigma 300mm f2.8 is an incredible lens, so if you're looking for a
300/2.8 under $3k, this is your chance! The lens comes with Sigma's 10-year
Canadian warranty, which we handle completely for you. Bring/ship it to any
of our stores in the next 10 years if you have any problems, and we deal

FS Friday: Our last Pentax 645D kit with AF 55mm f2.8 SDM

2013-04-05 Thread Chris Brogden
First off, thanks (and congrats!) to the PDMLer who bought a 645D kit from
us. You're going to have a lot of fun with it. :)

Now I have one left. Same as before, it has very few actuations on it.
It's an open-box new camera, which means it's been taken out of the box to
show customers, but hasn't left our store. It comes with the full 1-year
Pentax warranty (2 years if you register it with Pentax online). It's also
eligible for our Exceptional Service Plan on new equipment, which can add
another year or two to Pentax's coverage. To make it easy, we handle all
warranty claims for you, so we cover the shipping, handing, etc. Anyone
who's bought gear from us before knows that we're honest, fair, and take
care of any problems for you. Because these are open-box cameras, the price
is ridiculously low, so I wanted to let the PDML group know in case anyone's
had their eye on one but was waiting for the price to drop.

These bodies typically sell for $8799. We're selling ours for $6999.99, and
including a $1000 Pentax AF 55mm f2.8 SDM lens along with it for that price.

http://www.photoprice.ca/product/03348/Pentax-645D-price.html

It's a wonderful opportunity if you're looking to get into medium format
digital. If you're interested, email me any time at cbrog...@donsphoto.ca
or call (204) 254-9075 Monday-Friday.

Just saw this on Imaging Resource. Fuji plans a price increase.

At some point it will be cheaper to buy a memory card than a roll of film.

RE: New Pentax model(s) announcement 3/27 (or next week)?

2013-03-26 Thread Chris Brogden
One could argue that Pentax can rely on legacy lens support to justify a FF
body. I suspect we'll see the body before a bunch of FF lenses. People
could use their existing lenses on a FF body, but Pentax isn't going to sell
a lot of new FF lenses until they have a body to put them on. Just my
guess, anyway.

My expectation is that we will continue to see APS-C sensor systems with a
higher capacity.
Probably a 20Mp body at $200 more than the K5 II series.
But I don't expect a FF for a while yet. Why? Not enough lens support,
unless they release a bunch of them at the same time.

FS Friday: Pentax 645D with AF 55mm f2.8 SDM lens

2013-03-22 Thread Chris Brogden
Hi, everyone. Old-timers may remember me from back in the day when Pentax
ran the list and the grass was at least +3 saturation greener. At any rate,
it's good to see a lot of familiar names. As some of you know, I manage a
Don's Photo store in sunny Winnipeg, Manitoba (motto: "If you can force your
door open, it's not a snow day"). We're a friendly, family-owned
independent company with 8 stores in Canada. The one in south Winnipeg has
a good-looking manager who's shot Pentax his whole life, starting with an
S3. :) I got into medium format when Bill Casselberry (Photography on the
Oregon Coast) mailed me a few slides he had shot. The tonal range and
beautiful colours blew me away, and it wasn't long before I got my own 67II.

To the point: we brought in several 645D bodies from Pentax, and have sold
all of them except for our last two shelf models. These have been taken out
of the box to show customers at the counter level, but have not left the
store. They have less than 800 actuations on them. We're selling them as
'new' open box items, which means they come with the full 1-year Pentax
warranty (2 years if you register it with Pentax online), and are eligible
for our Exceptional Service Plan on new equipment, which can add more time
to Pentax's coverage. To make it easy, we handle all warranty claims for
you. Anyone who's bought gear from us before knows that we're honest, fair,
and take care of any problems for you. Because these are open-box cameras,
the price is ridiculously low, so I wanted to let the PDML group know in
case anyone's had their eye on one but was waiting for the price to drop.

A look at PhotoPrice shows the 645D body selling for around $8800 in both
Canada and the US:

http://www.photoprice.ca/product/03348/Pentax-645D-price.html

That's the body alone, no lens. By the time you add an AF 55mm f2.8, you're
up around the $10k range.

We're selling our last two 645D kits for $7225 CAN... and that includes the
AF 55mm 2.8 SDM lens! No charge for shipping anywhere within Canada; email
me with your zip code for a quote on US shipping. You're not going to find
a better price, so if you were considering bypassing APS-C and full-frame
sensors and stepping up to medium format, let me know. You can reach me by
email at cbrog...@donsphoto.ca or phone at (204) 254-9075.

Another slooow overnight transit from Aruba to neighboring Curaçao which has
a similar history of colonial development. Except that Curaçao has been, for
the last 90-100 years, a major spot for refining Venezuelan oil. A much more
varied population and economy. Our day in Willemstad was spent wandering the
streets; no off-road tours, no scenic rail or bus tours. The Dutch colonial
buildings are well preserved, and the floating market and City Market both
gave ample opportunity for photos. We sampled the local beer, some
Venezuelan beer, and Curaçao blue liqueur. A relaxing day.

FS: A* 300mm f4

2007-02-09 Thread Chris Brogden
Hi, everyone. Don's Photo at 410 Portage Ave. in Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada just took in a Pentax-A* 300mm f4 lens with the original case
and caps. It's selling on consignment for $700 CAN. There's some
internal dust, some dings on the built-in hood that don't affect its
operation, and some general wear. Front element has a few very small
cleaning marks but nothing that should affect anything. Overall
condition would probably be around an 8+ or 9, depending on how you
grade. Don't buy it as a collector item, but it will make a great
user.

Unfortunately I can't check the list as often as I'd like, so if
you're interested you can email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] You're
welcome to pay with Visa or MasterCard. Manitoba residents pay both
taxes, Canadian residents pay GST, everyone else won't be charged tax
by us, but your customs office may impose their own taxes or fees.

I sold my 67II to a friend at work to bring my debt load down. Thisleaves me
without any Pentax gear except an Auto 110, so I feel a weebit guilty about
posting here. I'll get a DSLR eventually, but fornow I can borrow pretty much
anything I like from the manufacturers'reps, so I'm taking advantage of that to
try out every DSLR I can. Idon't think I'll go with a Pentax DSLR, though my

yes, myg/f is a Pentax user. I bought her a Z-1p/28-105PZ to go with her

My photography lately has been taking on a bit of a distinctive style. It's
quite abstract, and people have commented that my photos looklike paintings,
often with brush strokes. I'm saving up to get someprinted frickin' huge on

I'm still on the list, just too busy to read it every day. Thanks for
the off-list heads-up, Bill.

Don's Photo can order the MX screens for you if they're still
available from Pentax, but we don't have them in stock at the moment.
We won't be ordering anything before Christmas, so you're probably
looking at 2-3 weeks before our next order arrives. Try Photo Central
(499 Notre Dame, 1-204-774-4343), as they're the only other store in
Winnipeg that might have one in stock. I don't know of any Pentax
shooters there, but Andrew and Rob are good guys.

Our selection of lenses is getting whittled down this close to
Christmas, but feel free to call me at work at 1-204-942-3143 (no need
for the area code if you're calling from Winnipeg) and I'll let you
know what we have. If you let me know what you're looking for, I can
check with our Pentax rep (he'll be in the store this Wednesday) to
see what his stock is like.

Feel free to email me off-list if you have any further questions.

Cheers,

As well as being quite compact for a 7MP camera with a 5x optical
zoom. Not to mention the flip-out LCD, metal body, M/A/S modes, etc.

I don't think you'll have to recharge that proprietary battery too
often. Phil at dpreview tested the older Optio 550 that used the same
battery and found that it lasted longer than those huge Canon BP-511s
in Canon's G-series digitals. He was able to get around 430 shots
using the flash half the time, IIRC. It's a small battery, but with a
huge mAh rating for Li-ions (1800, I think, where most are under 1100
mAh). I think the battery is one of the strong points of the 750.

Couldn't say. It's cute, and I get a lot of older customers
commenting on how it reminds them of the stereoscopic photography they
used to do, but I doubt that most people use it. The stitch-assist
mode, OTOH, seems to be pretty popular.

Did you give the local store a chance to come close to matching the
price? I love buying stuff online, and I'm willing to do that if the
savings are significant, but at the same time there's a lot to be said
for supporting a good local store if you have one.

It depends how badly I want the item. If I really want it, I snipe by
placing my maximum bid in the last few seconds of an auction. If I
don't want it as much, or if there's a lot of them on eBay, I'll place
a smaller than maximum bid early on and then forget about it. If I
win, I've got it for a great price. If not, no big deal.

Re: Red Ink over digital

I've never heard IS slammed by people who've used it. It's not the
end-all-be-all that some describe it as, and there's admittedly been a
lot of marketing hype over it that some people have exaggerated almost
into a mythology, but the fact remains that it's a very useful way to
get rid of some camera shake at slower shutter speeds.

I find that I can handhold IS lenses about 2 stops slower than I can
non-IS lenses and get comparable sharpness. I shoot MedF now, but if
I was shooting 35mm handheld, I'd take an IS system over a non-IS one,
all other things being equal.

Pentax *ist DS w/ lens $1249 CAN Fri/Sat only

2004-11-18 Thread Chris Brogden
Hi, everyone. As many of you know, I work for Don's Photo
(http://www.donsphoto.com), a family-owned camera store/lab based in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Great White North. I don't normally plug the
store or its prices on the PDML, but in this case I'm making an
exception.

For our 25th anniversary--this Friday and Saturday only--we're
offering the new Pentax *ist DS with the 18-55mm AL lens for $1249 CAN
(plus shipping) when you purchase a Sandisk Ultra II SD memory card.
Just for comparison, Henry's in Toronto sells the kit for $1399 (our
regular price), while Adorama wants $899 US for the body and $199 US
for the lens.

Prices for Sandisk Ultra II SD cards are $73.99 CAN for the 256MB and
$119.99 CAN for the 512MB. We charge 7% GST and 7% PST if we ship
within Manitoba; 7% GST if we ship within Canada, and no tax at all if
we ship to the U.S.

We have 100 *ist DS's on order with Pentax, and we should receive them
next week, making us one of the first places in CAN/U.S. to get them,
AFAIK. If you're interested, you can email me off-list at my gmail
address, or [EMAIL PROTECTED], or [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your
credit card info and your complete name and shipping address. For
security reasons, we can ship only to the address to which your credit
card is registered. If you have concerns about emailing sensitive
data, you can send me your card number over two emails (even to two
different addresses if you want), as long as you clarify which numbers
come first. :) You're welcome to try and reach me by phone at (204)
942-3143, but it may be difficult to find me when I'm not doing fifty
things at once this weekend... it looks like it'll be extremely busy.

Your credit card will be billed this Friday or Saturday to take
advantage of the sale price, and we will ship the camera to you next
week when it arrives. Because we're making next to nothing on the
camera, we have to charge for shipping. I expect it will range from
$25.00 to $60.00 CAN depending on where it's going, but both Canada
Post and USPS have websites which let you calculate shipping to your
specific location.

Remember, this price only applies if you buy one of the Ultra II SD
cards. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.
I'll check it as often as I can.

Cheers,

Chris Brogden

Re: 20x30" from 6MP?

2004-11-18 Thread Chris Brogden
I don't own a DSLR, but I own 35mm and MedF bodies, and I work at a
camera store/lab, so I've seen countless enlargements from all
formats, including DSLRs. I've noticed that film, even 35mm, seems
better able to capture really fine details. If I want a print I can
examine extremely closely, I'm going with film, even if it's only
35mm.

However, for some reason, possibly the complete lack of grain, DSLR
prints enlarge much nicer than 35mm and, if you go large enough, even
better than MedF. Sure the prints begin to fall apart if you walk
right up to them, but at a reasonable viewing distance, DSLR prints
look amazing. I'm so used to seeing grain on enlargements bigger than
20x30 that it's mindblowing to see its absence.

MedF, which is all I shoot now, is a good compromise right now between
the complete lack of grain of digital and the smaller negative size of
35mm. It looks pretty good when enlarged to poster size (the grain
isn't usually too objectionable), and it holds fine detail
exceptionally well. Of course MedF kits are not as cheap, portable or
feature-laden as 35mm or DSLR bodies, so there's definitely a
downside, but it works for me right now.

Re: Alert... stolen ist-D and 31mm Ltd

2004-11-17 Thread Chris Brogden
Sorry to hear that, Stan. The store from which you purchased the
equipment may have a record of the serial numbers, though. The camera
store I'm with keeps a computerized database of all sales which we can
search, and from which we can find and print old receipts, and we're
not a very large chain.

Good luck,

Chris

It's a good point, though. I've never bent a pin myself, but it's
hard as [EMAIL PROTECTED] to get a CF card in its slot at times. Card readers
designed for Type I and II CF cards can be frustrating if I'm in a
rush.

Re: I just ordered myself a *ist DS with DA18-55 lens.

2004-11-14 Thread Chris Brogden
CF can be bad for that reason ($200-$350 CAN repair on most cameras),
but at least the contacts on the cards are protected. With SD (like
other cards), the contacts are exposed, so you don't want to get them
too dirty or scratched. CF feels tougher, too.

If Pentax is expecting people to upgrade from p&s digitals, they're
hoping for brand loyalty. Pentax's digital compacts all take SD, but
the 'prosumer' models of almost every other brand take CF, even if
they also have another slot. Olympus's C-8080, for example, takes xD
and CF; the Minolta A2 takes CF, Sony's F828 takes MS and CF, etc.
etc.

SD is by far the most popular card for p&s digitals, though. It's
used by many Nikons, some Canons, all Minoltas except the A2, and by
all Kodaks, Panasonics, and Pentaxes. When it comes to prosumer and
DSLR models, though, everyone's already shooting CF, so it looks like
Pentax isn't catering to them. Instead, they're looking to convince
people shooting consumer digital cameras to upgrade to a DSLR without
having to buy all new storage media. It's actually not a bad idea,
and it fits in with their history of being just a little different
from everyone else. The more I think about it, the more I like the
idea. They've potentially just captured an entire market segment that
no one else is even trying for.

FS (with prices!): LX body, K50/1.2, M24-35/3.5, Viv. 55/2.8 macro, Zen. 16/2.8 fish, Kenko ext. tubes

2004-11-12 Thread Chris Brogden
Ok, the post you've all been waiting for... with prices. :) All
items show signs of use but not abuse. Nothing's in mint condition,
but nothing's ugly, either. Expect to see light to moderate signs of
wear and tear, possibly some dust in some lenses but nothing really
noticeable. I'll mention some of the more obvious points below.
Prices do not include shipping.

LX body: $350 US
Good: includes FA-1 metered prism finder, dedicated Pentax LX strap,
and box; no sticky mirror (had a complete overhaul about three years
ago), works perfectly
Bad: Leatherette starting to peel in one corner, automatic button
permanently depressed so does not lock in auto mode (I find this a
plus, personally, as it's quicker to use and you can still see your
setting in the viewfinder)

K50mm f1.2: $175 US

M24-35mm f3.5: $225 US
(has name and number engraved on bottom ring at back of lens)

Zenitar 16mm f2.8 fisheye (K-mount): $100 US
(comes with all filters, caps, manual, case, as purchased from a list member)

Vivitar 55mm f2.8 1:1 macro (K-mount): $125 US
Pentax does not make a manual focus 50ish f2.8 macro lens in K-mount
that can do 1:1, which is why I went with the Vivitar

Kenko Automatic Extension Tube Set (3 tubes: 12, 20, 36mm): $100 US
Full aperture coupling and electronic contacts. With original box,
only used a few times.

Please write me off-list if you have any questions or wish to purchase
an item. I don't have any pictures of the equipment yet, and by the
time I can make time to take some, I'll probably be ready to list any
remaining stuff on eBay. I'll accept PayPal, Western Union, and money
orders drawn from a bank or post office that are negotiable in Canada.
All items will be shipped fully insured, and I guarantee that they'll
be packed well enough to arrive safe and sound, as anyone who has
bought stuff from me before can confirm. :)

Re: 3D quality in a lens?

2004-11-12 Thread Chris Brogden
What's your fascination with telling people what they can't or
shouldn't do? The term in question is an appropriate metaphor for
describing a certain visual effect. As with all metaphors, the effect
described is not exactly the same as the effect to which the
comparison refers, but that's the whole point of a metaphor.

Photos that evince an obvious or exaggerated separation of the subject
from the background are artistically representing 3D space as closely
as possible on a 2D plane. "3D effect" is not technically accurate,
but it works metaphorically to convey a certain look or effect.

That's horrible! I can't tell if it's fungus or lens element

Ask the seller if he sent you the wrong lens. If he's selling that

The D2H is still only a 1.5x. Most Canons are 1.6x, though. To be
fair, the D2H wasn't designed to produce extremely high quality
images; that's what the D100 and D1X were for. The D2H gave you 8fps
with an internal buffer that could hold 40 JPGs, with the option of
wireless transmission. This was aimed more at PJs/reporters, I'd say.

2004-11-10 Thread Chris Brogden
There have been a lot of threads about bad eBay sellers/buyers, so
let's switch it up. So far I've only had one bad experience on eBay,
and that involved not receiving a <$10 item I paid for. Every other
sale or purchase has gone smoothly, and I've never had an item lost or
damaged in shipping. My feedback is still at 100%, though I only have
around 140.

So... what's the highest feedback rating of any seller with 100%
positive feedback that you can find?

Here's my entry, with 2062:

Great shot, Shel! The lack of bright whites gives it a very smooth,
old-fashioned look, which works well with the subject matter. I love
the composition, though the candy dispensers at the back look tilted,
which I find a bit disconcerting. Given the traditional tone of the
photo, the Old Navy bag makes the shot. :)

Good for you. When I sold you the 90/2.8 LS, I knew that I could live

teles past 150mm for the 67II, but I crave a macro lens. I'm making
do with some extension tubes I picked up a while ago from JCO, but
it's not the same. I won't be able to afford any new equipment for a
long time, so I guess I'll have to take pictures with what I have.
Guess this would be a good time to move up a level or two on
Rockwell's scale. :)

FS Friday: LX, 50/1.2, 24-35/3.5, 85/2, etc.

2004-11-04 Thread Chris Brogden
I don't have time to look up prices right now, so I'll just list the
gear I need to sell. I'll list prices early next week, but feel free
to make offers in the meantime, and if one looks good consider it
sold.

Cosmetic condition varies between great and not bad. Nothing's mint,
but nothing's ugly, either. Just used--not abused--equipment. The
24-35mm has a number engraved on the barrel, but oddly enough it
doesn't seem to have affected my photos. :) There's likely a small
amount of internal dust in some of the lenses, but nothing bad, and
the glass is perfect, with no scratches, marks, or internal fungus.
Aperture blades, focus, etc. are all perfect.

This is what I have:

LX body with metered prism (body ser# 5286238)
K50/1.2
M85/2
M24-35/3.5
Zenitar 16/2.8 fisheye
Vivitar 55/2.8 macro (1:1). Only bought because Pentax doesn't make a
K-mount manual focus 50ish f2.8 macro that does 1:1. The Vivitar is a
superb lens
Kenko extension tubes (set of three, LNIB)

It kills me to have to sell this, but I need the money. I'm keeping
my 67II, though, as I can't bear to part with it. I'll take PayPal or
international money orders (I'm in Canada), but no cheques.

On an unrelated note, does anyone feel like lending $30,000 to a
brilliant post-grad who can't get anything accomplished until he pays
off education-related debt? ;)

Actually, Pentax made 4 APS cameras. You're probably thinking of the
Efina T and Efina J, but there was also the original Efina and and
Efina AF50. All of them are horrible, but the Efina T was a very
well-designed and well-built camera, easily outclassing the Canon

I took Bill's Zenitar 16/2.8 fish off his hands, and I've been happy

make a subject look normal, I don't mind the slightly over-saturated
colours; they add to the effect.

Sounds like an FM3A with IDM metering and a spot meter added. Good
luck finding a body like that for $500.

FS: SMC Takumar 120mm f2.8

2004-10-18 Thread Chris Brogden
As seen here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3845684951

Last one on eBay (about 3 weeks ago) sold for about $280 US; go figure.
In any case, I'll let it go for $200 US including shipping anywhere in
Canada or the U.S. to a list member. If no one wants it, I'll put it up
on eBay again with a $200 reserve until it sells.

Cheers,

Chris

You'd probably like Perez-Reverte's _The Club Dumas_, or the Johnny
Depp film based on it, "The Ninth Gate."

"AE" probably translates to "metered." I used to make the same
mistake when talking about my 6x7.

It's still a very good deal and an amazing camera.

My answer is that film and digital are different media. You may as
well be comparing oil painting with watercolours. My experience with
seeing enlargements from 6MP DSLRS, 35mm, and 6x7 negs has been that
all film, even 35mm, does a better job at capturing fine details.
Everything looks good at smaller sizes, but when you start making
16x20 and larger prints, the digital prints do not look as good close
up. You can see digital artifacts, and the extremely fine detail that
film can capture just isn't there.

OTOH, when you move your nose away from the photo and look at it from
a normal viewing distance, the difference in visible detail
disappears, and I prefer the digital prints for their smooth colours
and lack of grain.

It's hard to say that digital is better or worse than film; it's
different, which means it's better in some ways and worse in others.
