At my weekly brunch this morning someone mentioned a small free-ware
application called the Photographer's Ephemeris. Requires Adobe AIR,
which I think you should already have if you're using Photoshop or
Lightroom.

http://stephentrainor.com/tools

I downloaded the program and am taking a first look - haven't even
finished reading the instructions, but I'm already impressed enough I
thought I'd pass it along.

It uses Google maps and locates a point on them. You can place the
point around anywhere you want it. It's not locked to the streets like
streetview is. I plugged in my own address and it locates the point
right in the middle of my property.

FROM your chosen point it shows a graphic line to the sunrise, sunset,
moonrise, moonset for any chosen date, along with the times, azimuth
and percentage of illumination for the moon.

There's an advanced view that allows you to show the line to the sun
and the moon for any time during a chosen date.

Want to know where you need to stand to get the full moon framed by
the mile high swinging bridge at GFM? What time and what dates?

Want to know if you can get the sunrise framed in the attic window?

You want to catch the full moon (quarter moon, new moon) rising or
setting over some landscape feature?

The program can tell you exactly where to stand (within the limits of
google maps ~ a couple of meters most places.)

The only lack I'm aware of is it doesn't appear to have a print
function, but I was told you can use "print screen" function under
Windows (or however the Mac does it) and paste it from the clipboard).

Nice find. I passed it along to the dpreview Pentax forum. Thanks.

Wait and see indeed. But, personally, I don't see that experience

They are less likely to offer repair service on older equipment, but
Pentax had already pretty much dropped support for a lot of that.

John,

Have you tried Peace Camera in Raleigh? They might not be on the

John Sessoms wrote:

I've been buying from B&H for years. They're great. Outstanding
service and good return policy. Of course they carry everything
Pentax produces. The days of the local camera store are
disappearing. It won't be long before your local Nikon dealer bites
the dust as well. They just can't compete with high-volume sources.

Stores like Walmart and Sam's Club, the names of which you cleverly
disguise in your post, aren't in the business of high-end
merchandise. They carry a few fast-moving cameras for the soccer mom
and t-ball dad set. It would be foolish of them to deal with
low-volume advanced equipment.

I too have dealt with B&H and Adorama for years. The drawback for me
is not B&H service or return policies. The drawback is UPS leaving
expensive, valuable items out on the front steps where they can walk
away unobserved.

I like buying from my local, independent stores, where I can put my
hands on the equipment before I slap my credit card down on the counter.

And the local, independent dealers I've been dealing with ARE
successfully competing with the big inter-net dealers. Their prices
are competitive and there's the added benefit of being able to talk to
other photographers while I'm in the store. It's like attending a free
mini-university of photography while I'm shopping.

They're selling plenty of Canon & Nikon, even Sony & Olympus ... they
could and would sell Pentax if they could just get Pentax to fill
their orders.

The names aren't cleverly disguised. Wally World has been a common
sobriquet for Walmart ever since National Lampoon's Vacation movie. I
use it for derision.

But, I agree they're not likely to sell the K-7, yet that's who Pentax
tells me is the "local dealer" for the K-7.

One of those inexpensive blue LED flashlights works even better to show up

Take each of your lenses into a dark room with a flashlight, open the lens
to
a full wide aperature, and shine the flashlight through the lens while you
look into the other side. Try it both directions. You'll see all kinds of
little bits of dust and such. If there is much of a haze, you'll see it
too.
You'll also see front or rear elements which have a cleaning film on them.
Compare the lenses to see which seem to be worse than the others.

Hello!

Does anybody print photos on metallic paper?
If yes, - all pointers will be appreciated, in particular:
1. Places (print shops/photo labs) that do a good job at a reasonable price.
2. Possible variations (paper type, printer type, ..?)
3. What to watch for?
4. Hints on preparing of the digital files for such metallic prints?

What type of printers can be used to print on metallic paper?
Ink Jets? Can laser printers be used?

Thank you,

Don,
I did a little poking around, the last MSRP for this lens was $345.00,
which gave it a street price between $150.00 and $225.00 in my
experience. I've seen them go on e-bay for as much as $125.00, not
recently, but the element separation problem has been getting a fair
amount of word of mouth. About the lack of sharpness on digital I have
no real clue, except that one of the symptoms, (in my copy of the lens
at least), that the separation had begun, was the the photos made with
it weren't as sharp as previously. It is kind of what you would expect
from a developing cataract, which is what my lens looks like it has now.

starts moving slow causing the winder to have a fit
when it can't advance the film when it thinks it can.
(see discussion from a couple weeks ago: "LX grouchy

Who knows the LX inside and out and is good at making
