cleaning focusing screen / pentaprism

2004-11-22 Thread Hugo Kok
Hello dear people,

I'm currently doing a long postponed job, namely exchanging focusing
screens between two MX-es. Reasons for postponing are of course the
trickiness of the procedure. I know of some of the dangers of touching
the screens and such. With pentaprisms I have none experience
whatsoever. I'm searching for people who have experience with this
dirty job because I'm afraid I screwed things up.

What I did is this:
Removed screen, parked it in the holder of the plastic screen box. Next
I looked through the viewfinder to notice some dusty particles. I
thought it to be a good idea to remove these too. So I gently moved a
special micro-fibre lens cleaning cloth over the pentaprism. Looking
through the viewfinder didn't make me happier, to say the least. I
don't know how to describe what I saw; it resembled most a trail of
very tiny oily drops. I wonder where these drops come from: the cloth
or is was it already on pentaprism? Anyway, not being able to remove
the phenomenon I proceeded to place the focusing screen from my other
MX in this camera. Looking through the viewfinder made me sigh a little
(of relief, that is) because there was no visible trace of the oily
substance to be found back on the image in the viewfinder. But still,
there were the dust particles. These are annoying and now I localized
them to be on the focusing screen and not on the pentaprism. Rubbing
with a lens brush did not help; it merely moved the dust from one place
to the other.

This longwinding story comes to an end now, because I'm nearing my
current state of misery; I finally tried to get rid of the dust by
using the lens cloth. I gently moved up and down ONCE. And now I can
see something that is best described as a trace of liquid. It's not
dark but transparant.

My question: is there anybody who has done this job before who can
provide for some suggestions regarding the whole procedure? Think it
would be of help for anyone facing the same situation. One of my
questions is for example: what the hell is going on with this special
lens cloths? There was no mention of it containing any sort of stuff
and I NEVER experienced someting like this (I use the cloth for a
considerable time to clean my lenses (front and back).

Anyway, Hope you guys have some ideas.

BTW: the focusing screen in the above story is a wholly matted one with
an extra fine matted centre circle - so no attached focusing aids on
the screen..

Yours,
Hugo

Re: Colour-presentation of Pentax lenses compared to Other Brands

2001-06-20 Thread Hugo Kok

Hi all,

there have NO filters been used, just plain camera + lens. Yhe
Hardanger Vidda is on 1100-1300 meter height, so there could be a
warrant to use skylight. But then again, the results between our two
systems should be tending towards the same blue-magenta side of the
spectrum. Moreover, scanning slides made backwards in time this same
difference is noticed now I've come to this conclusion. I wonder how it
is that it occured to me so late in time. The difference IS obvious.

It's true that I didn't notice this before and I do realize that the
blue-ish representation often is more realistic in my eyes. But I
wondered if there were more fellows having discovered this same trend.

By the way, what does a skylight filter do exactly and when is the use
of it warranted? Is it some kind of UV filter? Thought of the latter
that Pentax lenses were coated enough just to leave them be...

Thanks for reactions so far,
Hugo.

Re: MX/LX focussing screen descrepance question

2001-05-10 Thread Hugo Kok

Thanks Seth & Rob for the input.

I once was told that the enlargement factor of the fresnel lens was
also fractionally different between the MX and LX screens. I know not
if the former sentence is ape-bread but to me it sounds like it being
possible. What function does the fresnel-lens (or other contraption)
exactly have?

How to disassemble a Pentax Lens and put it together again

2001-05-10 Thread Hugo Kok

 Hi again,

another question to check out the Pentax Data Base that is YOU.
Situation is: comparing three of my lenses with fixed aperture (let's
say: 5.6), the light meter gives on all three of them a different
exposure time. That is: 50mm OK, 85mm +1 stop, 135mm +1/2 stop. After
extensive comparisons in which all possible other explanations were
ruled out, it left me with the only remaining cause: the 'pen' inside
the mount of the lens that mechanically tells the camera what aperture
is momentarily in use is not in proper place in two of the lenses.

Now here's my question: is it possible to open up the rear of the lens
myself, adjust the relative position of the 'pen' a little and at the
same time be reasonably confident to end up with a working lens?

Is there anybody out there who has had a similar problem and/or who has
had the guts to rip open one of their lenses? - how did you fare?

Maybe it's a good idea for anybody with ambitions to produce an
illustrated HOW TO ... guide on internet...

Thanks for reading, thinking and reacting,
Hugo.

MX/LX focussing screen discrepance question

2001-05-10 Thread Hugo Kok

 Hi,

Having heard/read about differences in metering properties of
respective focusing screens, I would like to ask if anybody can answer
this question: what is exactly the exposure compensation to be used
when inserting a LX-focusing screen into a MX-camera?

And, if anybody has experience in above mentioned screen exchange: are
there still other differences that makes my trick less likely to work
out properly?

Would be greatly thankfull for your comments.

Thanks, Hugo.

metal hoods for 85/1.9 lens?

2001-05-10 Thread Hugo Kok

 Hi there,

does anyone knows of a metal hood for the 85/1.8 K lens. I mean in the
style of the metal hood originally manufactured for a Takumar 135mm
that fits the 135/2.5 SMC lens. The combination of lastnamed pair works
out fine, so I am anxious to know if my restless search for a likewise
version for my 85mm is idle cognitive pre-occupation and thrown-away
effort or founded goal-directed behaviour.

Thanks, Hugo.
