Re: My uncle's photos. Longish.

2007-12-21 Thread John Bailey
Lasse,

It fascinates me to go thru past family photos.
I haven't been able to lately but I have this
continuous desire to find all of my fathers photos
at the old homestead.

John

--- Lasse Karlsson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi all,

Sorry, this got much longer than intended.

Two years ago my uncle (my mother's brother) passed
 away. Peacefully, at
around 84, I believe. He was a photographer.
(Not by profession - he was a radio-telegraphist
 (literally translated
from Swedish - if you know what his profession would
 be called in English,
please report (or in German, French, Spanish and
 Italian too). He'd be in
charge of tele communications for instance on a
 ship. However I believe he
only did one trip in the mid 50:s. He got too sea
sick to carry on at sea!
:) So instead of travelling the high seas (which a
 lot of Alanders did and
do, since international shipping is and has long
 been a major industry of
Aland) he took a job at the local Coastal-radio
 station (literally
translated). I am now happy he did, since this meant
 that he'd shoot a lot
of pictures locally in Aland and his and my home
 town, Mariehamn.)

After his wife also passed away last year, I first
 told his daughter/my
cousin, that all his picture archives, negatives and
 prints etc., MUST be
taken care of and I also offered me to do it. I
 actually had been
emphasizing this already with my uncle (who
appreciated my thoughts - but he
was already starting to lose some of his
 intellectual capacity) as well as
with my aunt/his wife, who to my horror first gave
 me some ambigious
statements, making me wonder if she actually had
disposed of it all. She had
at least at times expressed thoughts like I'm so
 tired of all his photos
and those things, I think I'm going to throw it all
 away (Sheer horror
at the thought - not only did we, the family, know
 of his unique family
photos of which we had been given many copies, but I
 also knew/thought/hoped
there'd also be pictures of great local documentary
 value in his archives.)
Luckily, it eventually turned out that his photo
 archives had been preserved
after all... (Sigh of relief... right? :) )

Since also his daughter, living abroad, at first
 when having to deal with
emptying and selling her parents' house, didn't seem
 to care that much about
the photos or my enthusiasm for them, I now realize
 that all the time up
till now, the question about my uncle's photo
 archives, actually has meant
some considerable concern, almost stress, to me.
Anyway, during the last couple of months I have been
 helping her cousin
clearing her (family) house, as it was sold. I guess
 I slowly gained the
trust and understanding for my views on the photos,
 since I now have been
given my uncle's photo archives (at least as a
 deposition and for getting
them sorted out, cleaned up and making some sort of
 an inventory of them). I
also got a lot of other old camera and dark room
 stuff, some a little
interesting but most of which I will have to find
 another home for.

My uncle - Erik, by the way - had the good taste of
early on - that is in
the early 1950s - choosing to shoot color slides, at
 a time when not too
many people did so around here.
For a couple of weeks now I have spent most of the
 days and nights doing
everything that possibly can be made to the most
 important part of the
archives, that is sorting out and cleaning his
 earliest slides. (From all
his some 60 active years there will be thousands of
 slides, and thousand of
 negatives).

Well, regarding his archives there is indeed a lot
 more that could have been
desired. Listen to this: I have yet to come across
 one single note of date,
place or persons depicted to any of his slides,
 negatives or single
 photographs!
Not one single peace of information anywhere! :)
 (This makes for some
interesting intellectual detective work on my part.
 In a way I don't mind,
since it is very interesting. On the other hand I'd
 really want to spend the
time on my own projects. However, I'm starting to
 think there will be at
least an exhibition of his photos. Maybe a book, but
 I'm not sure about how
 to finance such a project.)

Yet, he was very well aware of what was considered
to be even the most basic
method of filing negatives and slides. From late
 1940s onwards he'd
subscribe to photography magazines where such things
 repeatedly were
discussed, just as we are discussing it on this
list. He was in his daily
work as well as in his capacity as a local
 politician, very much aware of
the necessity of properly filing documents of all
 kinds. Yet, regarding this
one personally very important part of his life, he
 never applied even the
most basic filing method. My guess is that he simply
 never got started,
although always thinking he'd have to, and in the
 end never got about to
start while all new pictures added mounted

Thanks for posting the firewire card reader link. I
didn't know that was a multi reader available. I've
only seen the CF kind.

John

snip

downloading - especially with an eye toward a couple
 of jobs coming up
 - so I decided to look into getting an IEEE1394 card
 reader. And with
the prospect of the new K10D and SD cards (g...)
 in the near
future, a multi-format, or at least CF and SD,
 reader seemed the way
to go. Surprisingly enough, there aren't a lot of
 them around.
I ended up ordering an Addonics AESDMD2FW Mini
 Digidrive.
It arrived yesterday and though I don't have another
 Firewire card
reader with which to compare it, I can certainly
 tell that it's much
faster than my current USB2 card reader. (Over twice
 as fast, which
leads me to suspect that my old card reader isn't
 operating at full
USB2 speed, but that's another story...)

Here's the buy.com link for this item:

http://www.buy.com/prod/Addonics_Mini_Digidrive_7_In_1_Flash_Reader_Firewire_2_Slots/q/loc/101/10341066.html
They aren't kidding when they say that this item
 sells out quickly: I
went through a lot of on line shops and couldn't
 find *any* that had
it when I originally ordered it. It was back-ordered
 about a week
 before it shipped.

Advice on shooting Kodak UC in LX

I bought my first rolls of Kodak UC to use in my LX.
Did need to shoot this at the rated ISO? It's been a
long time since I've had 36 ex film in the camera.

Ummm,

The one I just bought from Joe must be the -K version.
My LX came with the SMC Pentax-A 50/1.4 lens. Way
back
then I didn't know that is a mismatch since the LX
doesn't have aperture selection via the body.

Re: istDS and istD shutter release sound?

2006-03-30 Thread John Bailey
Rick and Lucas,

Thanks for the replies. I noticed that in the reviews
that the istD did not sound the same. And that the
tests were done in a very empty sounding room. (a lab
maybe?) The review tests are really frame rate tests
against the std C/N cameras. I agree that my film
slrs are louder probably because the mirror is bigger.
My istDS has a high pitched sound that I really
notice, but then, it's up in front of my face!

John

Compared to my PZ-1, PZ-1p, and (especially) Super
Programs, the istD shutter noise is a whisper. I
have
shot chamber music recitals with the PZ-1p without
disturbing anyone, so comparing the istD and istDS
noise is rather like comparing the noise of a fly
fart
and a flea sneeze.

Kodachrome, like any colour film, has no silver
 content when processed.
The problem with scanning Kodachrome is that the
D-Max is high enough to be
outside the range of most, if not all, scanners.
I compared D-Max on K64 to that of Fuji Velvia one

When post-viewing in camera you are looking at a low
 quality jpg file which is
affected by the in-camera settings, the RAW
 transformation used to produce this
image isn't as sophisticated as most of the external
 RAW convertors and can
exaggerate bloom and CA issues. I find that if I
 reduce sharpening to the bear
minimum at the time of RAW conversion (using ACR)
 any bloom becomes far less
saturated and obvious, compensating for CA in the
 RAW convertor can help a
 great deal too.

4x5 experience - not Pentax WAS: Even more compatibility issues again!

2004-09-24 Thread John Bailey
JC,

What direction is the sail boat moving? I tried
shooting a river boat on the Mississippi River
with my 4x5 several years ago and I believe it
was blurred at 1/30 sec. I looked at some of my
4x5 transparancies (static poses) and just love
their detail!

Thing is, other than extreme panoramics wider
 than the
widest lenses available ( which the scope of
 this discussion
has NOT been limited to), what types of high
 res photography can you
 possibly
do with the small format pan and stitch
 technique that someone cant do
 with normal LF?

 Regarding the seascapes,
Exactly how are you going to do 16 to 25
 exposures of
a large sail boat that is moving slowy the way
 I can
with a single LF exposure at say 1/30 of a
 second total
exposure? I say my theory is right and your
 practical
application is pure B.S. I can get a nice hi
 res LF shot, with
pan and stitch you DON'T GET that type of shot
 at all.

What a load of BS. I just explained to you
 how I use LF
to do seascapes with boats and why pan and
 stitch wont
work and you tell me I have no experience?
 You memory
isnt very good. I don't need to waste my time
 doing things
I know wont work. I'd rather actually being
 doing things
that do work. I don't need to buy a DSLR to
 know I cant
do moving objects or fleeting subjects with
 the pan and stitch
  technique.

Well, if thats all you do with your view
camera, I would dare say that
you are severely limited in your picture
 taking. We've had similar
discussions in the past about what will and
 what won't work, and have
been on opposite sides of the fence, your
 theory saying no, that won't
work, my practical experience saying yes it
 will.

Chris,

It's not too hard at home using a film tank and 3

me was keeping the bath temp up and keeping from
tipping over the metal containers in the bath. (I
think it was around 100F). I did both 35mm and 120.
Then you have to hang dry the film is a dust free

Quick question: Super A : linear or circular
 polarizer?

 A.

But, since the LX meters off the film after the mirror
flips up the exposure will be correct if you use the
auto exposure mode. Just remember when using a linear

polarizer on the LX to use an aperture that doesn't
require the highest shutter speed. This does limit
the LX to be used an exact light meter for a non
metering camera.

I believe the continous light OTF metering in the LX

shutter speeds below the sync speed. At higher
 speeds the shutter

 shutter curtain

True, but what happens at the TTL auto set speed of
