I'm currently enrolled in a 35mm film photography class at our local
community college. We were given Vivitar cameras with a 50mm F/1.8
lens. The darkroom has about 10 enlargers. They also offer a color
35mm class, which utilizes a different darkroom. They also have a
large format photography course, and I'm told a medium format class.
I've also been told that a new building is being built and they'll
leave the color film class behind, when that happens. I'm not in the
program, but it looks like it is mostly digital, but if you wish, you
can spend quite a bit of time with film.

Well drat! I purchased the * 60-250 just before the prices went up.
I didn't purchase it with the intent to sell it later, but after
handling it, I decided it wasn't for me. After the huge price
increase on that lens I breathed a sigh of relief that I'd be able to
get my money back. That just became a little harder. Oh well, I'm

Nicely done. Like the composition and careful framing of the edges.
The orange thing in the upper right hand corner I find a little
distracting. At first view, instead of following the path all with
way to the end at the top of the frame, my eyes stopped at the orange
pants, bench, sign The wide dynamic range, shadow gradient,
little motion blur on the foot, reflections, lighting, all good stuff.
There's a lot to look at in this picture.

OT: Local 35mm Negative Scanning Prices

2012-05-29 Thread Kenton Brede
So I decided a few weeks ago to give film a try. I bought a couple
old Pentax cameras and started shooting. Locally we have a camera
shop that will develop black and white film and scan to disk. So I
shot a few rolls and really liked the process of shooting a manual
film camera. So I thought I'd go a little deeper and start developing
the negatives and have the same shop scan them for me. So I worked
with the owner and bought all the chemicals. I mixed the D-76 and
Fixer last night in preparation of developing three rolls tonight. So
I called them this morning and asked what the price would be to scan
three rolls. This is the breakdown:

Prices for them to develop one roll of B&W and scan to disk.

$5.25 developing fee, $3.99 for the scan to CD = $9.24

Prices for them to scan my negatives, 36 frames.

69 cents per image, $3.99 for CD = $28.83

I asked why they were charging so much more for doing less work, and
the answer was, after consulting management, "We give a price break on
the scanning, if you develop your film here."

Needless to say, I won't be developing my negatives tonight.

Anyway, just a rant. Sorry it was so long. I know there are cheaper
scanning alternatives online. I really didn't want to purchase a
scanner right away. I wanted to wait to make sure I was going to
stick with film, before buying a scanner. But at those prices it
wouldn't take long for the scanner to pay for itself.

Jeffery,
Just took a look at your changes. The site is coming along nicely. :)
One thing I will add. The opening page is centered on the screen.
When opening the thumbnail galleries, they snap to the left. From
there opening a single photo, the photo loads centered. The
right/left, left/right shift is a little distracting in my opinion.
If you could get the thumbnail gallery to open centered it would help.

My 2 cents. :)

My light meter working OK?

2012-05-21 Thread Kenton Brede
I'm making a foray into film and decided I should get a light meter.
I bought a used Sekonic L-508 which has both incident and spot
metering. Messing around with the K-5 and Sekonic, I found the
readings didn't really match up. So I took a picture of the blue sky,
the histogram was spiked in the center. I then spot metered the sky.
I used the compensation function to dial in 3AV to bring the meter in
line with the K-5's shutter, ISO and aperture. I used a gray card in
the shade to meter off of with the K-5, and then matched those
settings on the Sekonic by dialing in a -1AV for the incident reading.

Does this sound like a decent calibration method?

I went around metering things and taking shots with the K-5. I found
that if I spot metered off a shaded green bush, I needed to speed up
the shutter 2 stops to bring the histogram near center. When metering
off a gray cloud, with silver lining, I sped up the shutter a couple
stops to bring the histogram to center. The incident meter seemed to
get the K-5 in the ballpark when metering in front of a tan shed,
while the meter was facing the direction the sun. In shade, facing
away from the sun, I generally had to slow the shutter down a couple
stops.

Does this sound like the way an accurate light meter works? I've
never used one.

Any thoughts appreciated. I realize all this hinges on the K-5 being
accurate, and assuming the film cameras will work with the same meter
readout as the K-5. I probably should have just purchased a new
model, but good ones are expensive!
Thanks,

Lens hood for pentax m 28mm

2012-05-16 Thread Kenton Brede
I've got a screw in lens hood for my M50mm and M28mm lenses that works
fine with my K-5, but when I tried it with my K1000, I get vignetting.
I found a hood for the 50mm on B&H but not for the 28mm. From what I
gather the official hood is a PH-S49 for the 28mm. Can't find that
anywhere. I found this snippet on Pentax Users, "For your M-28mm and
M-50mm, a 49-37mm and a 37-30.5mm step-down adapter ring will do
nicely." I've never worked with step-down rings but it doesn't make
sense to me to go from 49mm to 30.5mm. It seems like the lens would
vignette with that configuration.

Anyone have a bright idea or know of a source for manual lens hoods?
I've tried ebay and KEH and google of course.
Thanks,

Processing overexposure on film

2012-05-14 Thread Kenton Brede
I'm just getting started with film. One of the things I've read is,
unlike digital, it's better to expose for shadow detail. I've read
that a lot of detail can be pulled back from the overexposed areas on
film.

My question is, can that detail be pulled back from a digital scan of
a negative, or can that only be done via wet print process in a
darkroom? Another way to state this, should film be exposed in
different ways depending on how it will be post processed, digitally
or analog?

Darren I didn't get to Ryan's presentation. :( I am familiar with his
excellent work though.

I will post back with the repair time. At this point we're waiting
for a part from Pentax. Who knows how long that will take. So far I
think it's been three weeks, waiting for the part.

Re: An oddball bucking some trends...

2012-04-02 Thread Kenton Brede
I met the gentleman who owns this shop during the Nebraska Photography
Symposium in Hastings Nebraska. He gave a talk on the first day
during lunch. He talked about camera repair, among other things. He
mentioned Pentax a few times, so I caught him later in the day and
asked if he worked on lenses. He told me he did. I sent him a DA
15mm that I had dropped on a sidewalk, that was "fixed" twice by
repairman who specializes in Pentax. Hopefully he'll be able to
repair it so it works properly.

I think it was $15.00 for the estimate, which is applied to the
repair. He also guarantees his work.

While I can't endorse his repair, until I get my lens back. Here's
his website: http://www.cameradr.com/

One more thing. If you have an agency in mind, I'd ask them. Some of
them specialise in certain CMS packages. If all you're going to do
with it after it's created is update pages, I don't think it really
matters which you go with. Just pick the interface you like to work
with the most when you evaluate them. Security is a concern, but most
of the time if you're going with a CMS, you're probably not keeping a
database full of client credit card numbers around. :)

I'd say try their demos or get a free account with them and see what
you like. At least you can do that with joomla and wordpress, I don't
know about the other two. I've work with all you listed, except for
typo3. I like joomla and wordpress the best, for ease of use. Drupal
I used a few years ago, I'm sure it's changed a lot since then. At
that time it was more geared toward multi-user setups, that's why I
was using it.

What do you want to do with the site? Hiring someone to create a
website for you can cost a lot of money. But you probably know that.
Unless you want something real sophisticated, it's pretty easy to put
up a basic website (blog, static pages, photo gallery) with any of the
packages you mention.

I don't see it in the RAW. It's only when I save as JPEG. I'm
evaluating Bibble and Lightroom. I see the beginning of the
pixelation (yellowing) at about 80% quality, 72dpi. Lightroom is
putting out just a slightly better quality JPEG @ 80%, but it weighs
in at 359KB as opposed to the 152KB of Bibble. If I go 100% quality
on the JPEG there isn't any pixelation, just some yellowing with both.
If I darken the black with "curves" then the pixelation really starts
to come out.

Right now the best I can do is use the auto rendering that the
programs create and save as 100%, and it doesn't look too bad. I just
end up with files that are around a MEG which isn't really ideal for
web. :) But I think that's what I'll go with.

Sorry I'm a complete newbie at this. Just thought maybe I was doing
something wrong that would be obvious to someone.
Thanks,

Need advice on this picture

2010-12-18 Thread Kenton Brede
I took the following photo in low light conditions with a macro lens
on f/16, shutter speed of 30 sec. and ISO at 200. I used a lamp to
create the shadow. Anyway I liked the photo for the most part. The
histogram shows stacking on the dark side. The part I don't like is
the shadow. In the original there's some yellow mixed in, and after
any kind of processing to darken the shadow, I get pixelation. Is
this a sign of what's called clipping? How can I avoid this showing
up when taking pictures like this in the future? As far as post
processing I've tried darkening and noise reduction, and it has gotten
better but I've not been able to get it to where I want. On my laptop
monitor this pixelation shows up but not so much on my desktop
monitor, but if you blow the photos up I think you'll see what I'm
talking about. Thanks for any advice.

Here's the original, click for larger size:
http://cid-18627bb63e69dee1.photos.live.com/self.aspx/photos%5E_shared/feather-orig.jpg

This one has been darkened a bit to show the pixelation more promenently:

You could search for something like "pentax K20 camera" on ebay, and
then checkmark "Completed listings" under "Show Only." That would
give you a ballpark in that market.

laptop recommendation

2010-12-07 Thread Kenton Brede
I've decided to purchase a laptop for RAW image processing. I'm also
a budding nature audio recordist, so I'll be doing audio post
processing as well. So far I've only played with Bibble and Picassa a
bit processing photos. My plan is to give Photoshop and Lightroom a
try.

I would like to purchase a mac since it's unix based, but I need a
more compelling reason than that to justify spending the extra money.

Those of you who've used image processing software on both platforms,
what reasons made you settle on one OS over the other for working
images?

Understood. I've taken over a thousand photos so far with the camera.
99.99% are crap and the rest are not quite crap. LOL But
I've learned a few things. One thing I've learned is my inability to
remember to change ISO and white balance. When the camera is in my
hands aperture and shutter speed is all I seem to think about. White
balance I've read isn't a big thing when shooting raw, but I've not
been able to take one photo shot on "incandecent" and one on "cloudy,"
with the same settings otherwise, look the same in Bibble. I should
probably make a mental checklist to go over before every shot.

polarizer and graduated filter. I also picked up a cleaning kit with
rocket blower and a manfrotto tripod and head. No one told me the
peripherals were going to cost so damn much. I feel like I'm
hemorrhaging money. LOL It's sad but true.

I know next to nothing about photography. I've read "Understanding
Exposure" by Bryan Peterson and "The Digital Photography Book" by
Scott Kelby; both have been a good introduction I think. I'm
currently reading "Creative Nature & Outdoor Photography" by Brenda
Tharp. Next on the list is "The Photographer's Eye" by Michael
Freeman. If anyone has suggestions as to which other books I should
be reading, I'm all ears.

I've never used any image manipulation type software other than
Picassa. I'm a Linux user and have evaluated Bibble 5 for a couple
evenings. It's crashed on me a few times and sucks all available
memory and some swap when it imports RAW and builds thumbnails. I
might have to break down and get a MAC at some point, if all Linux
image software is this crash prone. Bibble does have some cool tricks
though. I really like the heal/clone thing but I suppose other
software packages have something similar.

OK, I do have a question:

Is there a page defining the acronyms used here, like: PESO, GESO,
PAW? If not, could someone enlighten me?

Thanks,
Kent
