Tonight's crazy idea

2012-02-29 Thread Larry Colen, l...@red4est.com (From Droid)
I was thinking about blown out sections of a photo and how it is often just one
channel that clips. It seems that it would be possible to do something like
content aware fill, using color balance from nearby areas, and the vallues in
the non clipped channels to extrapolate in the blown out areas.
A simple example might be colored stage lights, where you can see red at the
edges but which look yellow, then white as channels clip.

Re: You are not a photographer

2012-02-04 Thread Larry Colen, l...@red4est.com (From Droid)
I think that the view too many people have is that nobody but them is a real
photographer. It's funny how competitive people can be about an activity where
the output is almost entirely subjective.
It seems that any time someone posts a series of photos, the distribution of
which ones other people choose as favorites is almost flat.

If you don't want this to happen, have separate google accounts for different

If you aren't paying for something, you are what's being sold.

Re: New Pentax EVIL rumor, with specs

2012-01-20 Thread Larry Colen, l...@red4est.com (From Droid)
I can see a few reasons.
The kx is right on the verge of pocketability, the k5 is slightly too large. A
little smaller and a better shape could make a big difference.
Face recognition on focus
It could be cheaper to build
Manual focus in low light
The k5 doesn't have a lot of gaps in its performance that will be fixed by huge
leaps in the same form factor. EVIL has an entirely different set of inherent
strengths and weaknesses. It's like the crescent tool company coming out with
pliers and complaining that they aren't any better at removing nuts than the
adjustable wrench you own.
You are not the intended customer.
I also find it funny that half the list gets a priapism over the new fuji,
wishing it had a sensor as good as the K5 and was able to use pentax glass, but
at the possibility that Pentax is coming out with a camera that will, then the
sky is falling.
If it's not what I think I want, then there is obviously no market for it.

Re: So wrong

I'd say that it's right up there with cat photos.

Seriously a lot of the same arguments against coloring photos could be made
against photos as art, rather than painting.
Did Dylan get upset when the Byrds or Hendrix did better versions of his songs?
If someone colorized my van when it was parked on the street I'd be upset. If
someone started with one of my photos for their own artwork I'd be flattered.
If they went and sold it, I would want a cut of the action.

If you are using a lens like the 16-50 you can rotate and zoom at the same

RE: GESO - Men at work

2011-12-27 Thread Larry Colen, l...@red4est.com (From Droid)
Don't worry, I understand. The photos were actually pretty much superfluous.
In theory, I was going to get something productive accomplished today, so I
didn't spend the time I could/should have to edit down the set.
As it turns out the twenty minute run to the hardware store to pick up a part
for my compressor ended up being almost four hours and runs to four different
shops.
It's quite possible that at the last store I got a shot of the moon and venus
that doesn't suck.

To be completely accurate, I probably could have said what I wanted with about
two sentences: The water main burst in front of my house on Christmas eve and

RE:enablement $30 ring light adapter

2011-12-20 Thread Larry Colen, l...@red4est.com (From Droid)
I've been pretty happy with the place. Http://ephotoinc.com if you talk to
them tell Isabel I sent you. They are more fun to go to in person and poke
around the showroom. You almost get a brick and mortar with online pricing.
The stuff is cheap, just a notch above harbor freight quality. If I were a
pro Id invest in better. But for my needs their light stands etc are just fine.
