You can wash a genuine IBM Type M in a dishwasher. Just make sure you don't
use a heated drying cycle.

Let it air-dry for several days before trying to use it again.

That should work fine, Dave. But it looks like the specs for your machine
would support 16GB with 4x4GB DIMMs, so I would highly recommend making the
jump all the way up to that if you can swing it. If you can't justify it
financially, getting yourself to 8GB is a good step in the right direction.

A little thumper.

I've got 5 bikes in the garage. Four of them are single-cylinder bikes.

No suggestions about the photo, but for the screws on the carb, a
dremel tool can cut a slot for a flatblade screwdriver if you strip
the screw heads. Once you get them out, replace them with allen-head
stainless steel screws.

You can use a single strand from a piece of stranded copper wire to
clean out the clogged jets in the carburetor.

It certainly worked for both of the 50/1.4 Super Taks that I have. I
put them on the windowsill of a south-facing window with the aperture
wide open and some tinfoil around the bottom of the lens. 3-4 weeks of
that and they were clear. If your window is one of the new-fangled

Nothing says she can't boot Windows on the iMac. In fact, it's
supported from Apple. If you use Parallels, you can be running Windows

What I've done on my trips down (and I've done several so far), is to
keep a list of the campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is
a list somewhere on the web (Google again) with all of them, and their
milepost markings. I even printed it out in small print and put it in
the map pocket on my motorcycle.

>From there, it's simply a matter of figuring how many miles you're
doing in a day, and back-figure from there. From my recollection,
doing 8 hours or so a day of travel, I was able to get from
Harrisburg, PA to the Peaks of Otter (milepost 86) on the BRP in one
day. From there to GFM (milepost 305 off of the BRP) was about 5-6
hours or so without rushing. And from there to the end of the BRP was
about another 4-5 hours, again without rushing.

Speed limit on Skyline Drive is lower than the BRP, and they do patrol
it more. You're also more likely to get behind a slow-moving convoy of
large RVs, so plan accordingly. Also, if you can bypass the town of
Front Royal, you'll save a decent chunk of time. There's always a lot
of traffic going through the town, and it's stop-and-go with traffic
lights.

The access road to the picnic area, where we camp, is gravel. Not
difficult at all, and I had no trouble at all pulling through and
finding a parking spot for a 600cc sportbike.

I think it was AnnSan who took a picture of my bike at GFM a couple of

Not too hard. Hardest part is the hairpin turns on the road going up

Yes it is.

My usual stop-for-the-night point on the BRP on my way to Grandfather

as spectacular as some of the North Carolina sections of the BRP, but
that stretch of road is very nice nonetheless.

If the version of Photoshop you're running is 32-bit (CS3 and older),
4 gigs of RAM is all it can use.

Also, if you're still running CS2 or CS1, it's running those in
emulation mode (Rosetta), which is another source of slowness.

The solution to both problems? Throw money at an upgrade...

The SCA 3000 series adapter that you slide the 3702 into will give you
a focusing light (LED) for low-light autofocusing. SFAIK, the SCA 300
series adapters don't have that.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.

I've got a 45CT4, a 3000 series adapter, and a 3701 module to go into

A couple of the ice rinks I've been to have small "portholes" in the
glass near the ends of the ice, off on the side. Gives a clear shot at
the goal. Often there are pro photographers monopolizing those
portholes. Otherwise, your best bet is probably a long zoom up in the
stands. At smaller arenas, they may allow photographers to stand up
along the rails at the base of the seating area, but that really
depends on the individual arena.

White balance can be an issue in the arena, what with a
not-quite-white ice under mercury vapor lighting. The few times I've
done it, I've shot raw, and white-balanced off of the white in the
uniform of the team. Luckily the colors of the team I watch most often
are "cherry and snow."

Yes, your FW400 devices will work off of a FW800 port.

See http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10301

Easiest way to back up/restore files that I've come across.

Not having to run an antivirus/spyware program.

If you're familiar with unix-like OSes, the security model and the

I've been using the Energizer Lithiums in my DS2 for a couple of years
now. They last a long time, work better at cold temps than
rechargeables or alkalines, and a set of four is significantly lighter
than NiMH or alkalines, making the camera itself lighter in my hand.

Only downside is that the battery indicator will go from "full" to
"flat" very quickly. I always keep a spare set in my camera bag

ISTR Kodak produces (produced?) two different varieties of C41 B&W film.

One variety was designed to be printed on standard B&W paper. So the
negatives had the correct tonal range for that.

The other variety was designed to be printed using a standard color
printer. So the negatives had the correct (compressed) tonal range for
that.

Maybe that accounts for the differences?

There are actually two versions of the M28/2.8.

I suspect you're referring to the "old" version.
The "new" version is mechanically and optically identical to the
A28/2.8. Only difference is the focus ring and the presence/absence of
contacts on the lens mount.

There was also a "Takumar Bayonet 28/2.8" which is the same as the
later M/A referenced above but without contacts or SMC coating on the
glass. I have one, and it's a decent lens, but flare-prone. I also
have an A28/2.8 which is very nice on the DS2.

I'd recommend sticking with either 180 or 360 ppi if printing to an
Epson printer. Every time I've tried a resolution that wasn't a
multiple of 180, I've gotten jagged artifacts in the output from the
resampling. The "native" resolution of the Epson inkjets is the factor
here. Photoshop/Lightroom seem to do a much better job with the
resampling/resizing than the Epson print drivers do.

The photo-based professional printers seem to have native resolutions
of either 300 or 400 DPI, depending on the exact model. I'm sure
someone else can shed more light on the process for them.

At the "convert colour space to sRGB" step, there are options as to

When you do the sRGB conversion in Photoshop, you have several options
as to how it does the conversion. It pays to do a preview with each
one and see which one affects the image the least offensively.

I'm not sure what algorithm Lightroom uses for the conversion, but it
should match one of the ones that Photoshop uses.
