debating on buying an mx....

2002-01-13 Thread Paul C

Hi all,

Today I came across a used black MX at a local camera store, and I'm
debating on whether to buy it or not. Its pretty beat up, lots of brassing
and missing one of the screw-in covers on the bottom(not the battery cover),
but no dents, they're asking $175 CAN. To me, this seems like a pretty good
deal from what I've seen on ebay, but then again, most of the bodies on ebay
were in pretty good condition. Does anyone know of anything to watch out for
when buying a used MX? Any advice would be much appreciated!

thanks,
-Paul C

When Pentax M-, K-, or S-series lenses are used, the camera automatically
switches to the center-weighted metering system. Does S-series refer to
the Star(*) lenses?

MZ-S; fit for the outdoors?

2001-09-03 Thread Paul C

Hi all,

As I have found my Z-1p to be rather lacking in the ruggedness
department, I'm considering buying an MZ-S as a second body(or as a
replacement) for taking on outdoor expeditions, ie: multi-day
backpacking, hiking, backcountry skiing (actually snowboarding...),
mountain biking, traveling in wet/humid/dry conditions and so on. The
features I am most in need of are: build-quality, weather sealing,
ergonomics, electronic features, and user interface. In regards to
build-quality, I know that the MZ-S is much better than my Z-1p, but how
much of the MZ-S is actually metal? Isn't the back made of plastic? In
the case of weather sealing, I would like a camera that is well sealed
against moisture and dust, I recall this being discussed a while back,
but can no longer remember--or locate in the archives--the final word.
And as for ergonomics, electronic features and user interface, apart from
having rather slow fps--which I don't really need--I have found the MZ-S
to be adequate. I would appreciate it if anyone who has experience with
the MZ-S(especially outdoors), could fill in the some of the blanks, and
share some thoughts and comments.

thanks,

-Paul C

Ok, here are the general results for April. We're over the 200 mark now,

One of my inside contacts just gave me a lot of prototypes that I have
never seen before! So now I have a 20/1.4, 35/1.4 and a working
24-70/2.8. Pentax experimented with this AL ED IF lens but shelved it in
favour of the less-expensive 24-90, but it's a beauty Except the
plastic window fell off and it's all dirty inside and I think it doesn't
focus at infinity. Oh well. I gave my friend a couple of Vivitar Series
1 50/1.2's in trade, since I have no use for the 6 I picked up at a garage
sale for 50 cents. Has anyone else heard about the new 16-32mm f2.6-3.3
Limited Zoom? Sure looks like a beauty.

Re: New Pentax S-1, MZ-1 and MZ-4(2?)

2001-03-27 Thread Paul C

Wow, I sure hope these are the future plans for the Pentax slr lineup. I'll
be especially pleased if they come out with a "S-1" type camera to replace
my z-1p. Maybe it will be compatable with a new line of FA II USM lenses.
That would make for a killer system.

Subject: New Pentax S-1, MZ-1 and MZ-4(2?)
Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 00:19:19 +0200

Pentax have been showing their plans about the future 35mm slr line-up at
the Japan camera show. The MZ-S was said released while the Z-1p evolves
into it successor and the MZ-3 to its upgrade models.

The line-up was illustrated by diagrams showing the Z-1p sucessor at one
end and the MZ-3 upgrades in the other. The MZ-S is a fusion and a midpoint
between the two model lines. Whats more natural than making your only
digital slr an average of your product line?
The MZ-S fuses the MZ-line with the Z-1p sucessor - fusion of MZ-3 and Z-1p
interface. The "MZ" in the MZ-S name obviously refer to the MZ-series
values in the camera. It's then natural (for me) to assume the the "S" in
MZ-S refer to the name of the Z-1p successor. I hereby guess its going to
be called S-1.

Its interesting to note the words here: For the Z-1p the word sucessor is
used - not upgrade. So its most likely a new camera and maybe even a new
series of cameras. At least it indicate that the Z-name won't be used. For
the MZ-3 upgrade they talk about cameras. Hence, its to be expected that
two bodies will be placed above the MZ-5n in the MZ-series (maybe the
MZ-5n/3 will be replaced by one of them).

So what is this S-1 like? I believe its very likely that it continue
refining the interface and feature set of the Z-1p but of course add
up-to-date features. Maybe some novelties. More uncertain is whats exactly
meant by Z-1p sucessor. Is it pricewise or conceptually? I believe that an
S-1 conceptually moulded after the Z-1p will cost more than the MZ-S which
means that the S-1 is an upmarket move.

The MZ-3 upgrades are another matter. My guess is that one of them most
definitely is the MZ-1. The other an MZ-4 or MZ-2. I see two posibilities
for the MZ-2/4: a) a sort of MZ-7 plus; b) a quite litteral upgrade of the
MZ-3 retaining its conservative user interface. If you look at the diagram
the MZ side definitely indicate small size. However, its unclear also
wheter it implies conservative user interface and economy in features.
There are indications of the latter; remember the MZ-S is said to be a mid
points and it indeed fuse conservative interface with modern Z-1p type.
Hence, its conceiveable that Pentax intend to split their slr line up in
two series; a) an MZ-series which are small and easy to use camera and b)
an S-series which are feature laden and larger.

Since neither the MZ-S or an S-1 is very convincingly as the "Limited"
camera, I have again start believeing in the MZ-1 as exactly that; a
connouisseur conservative style aluminium dody designed to match the
Limited lenses and to appeal to the MX and LX users.

Theres nothing saying when these cameras will be released. However, its
likely that the next to come is one of the
MZ-3 upgrades; MZ-2 or MZ-4?

BTW Pentax also work hard on further miniaturization of their medium
format equipment.

Pål

choosing a magazine...

I have been subscribed to peterson's Photographic for about a year and a
half now, and I don't really like it. I find that they are never critical of
the products they review. For that reason, I'd like to subscribe to a
different photo magazine, but I'm having trouble choosing one. I've bought a
few issues of Shutterbug and Pop Photo in the past and find them to be
pretty good, but I'm wondering if there's anything better. I really like
lens/camera/film reviews and comparisons, pictorials and tips on technique.
I'd appreciate the posting of any opinions on this matter.

OK Bill, so not "You're it!"
What were your impressions of the viewfinder and the AF?

  Thanks,
  Ed

I didn't pay much attention to the area of the viewfinder, but the
brightness was about what you would expect. Satisfactory but not great. I
thought the autofocus was very quick and the ease of changing AF sensors
was
very well thought out. Simply turning a dial while looking through the
viewfinder illuminates which AF sensor you are using with an LED at the
bottom of the viewfinder. Slick, but may be hard to see in bright
sunlight.
It was overcast yesterday when I got to play with it. Also, according to
the brochure, the AF can be locked either by the traditional 1/2 shutter or
by pressing the AF button on the back of the camera.

I'll try and scan the brochure, but since it's much larger than my flatbed
scanner bed I may not be able to. If I can I'll let everyone know

Re: MZ-S hands on!

2001-02-20 Thread Paul C

"The exterior is plastic but he swears that the frame is magnesium."

Plastic? Are you sure? The press release talked of a "magnesium diecast
material, which is lighter in weight than most other metals and more durable
than plastics or resins." I hope that it turns out to be metal, since that
was one of the biggest selling points for me.

thanks,

I'm just wondering, does the FA 35/2's barrel extend when focusing?

size of mz-s

2001-02-15 Thread Paul C

I was comparing the MZ-S's dimension's with the Z1-p's and was pleasantly
surprised to find that the MZ-S is almost the same size. Only .4" narrower,
.4" shorter(depthwise) and almost the same height. I thought it was a lot
smaller than that.

What are those little nooks and crannies on the back of the Mz-s's battery

Re: News from PMA - MZ-S and other stuff

Everything looks great EXCEPT for the 2.5 fps, maybe the battery grip boosts
the fps a little? Thanks Gianfranco for the link!

Re: a tiny bit of MZ-S info

2001-02-05 Thread Paul C

I wonder what kind of features they decided to go with. 1/8000 top shutter
speed and 1/250 flash sync would be nice, but would that be possible on such
a small body? Does anyone know if the grip is metal also? I'm assuming it
is.

-paul c (looking forward to seeing how the mz-s turns out.)

I've spoken with someone who's seen the specs for the MZ-S, and they say
that it's really as small as it appears to be. It is slightly larger than
the MZ series, but only by a few millimeters or less. So it looks like we
got our metal-bodied MZ camera after all, only with a new 6-point AF
system (SAFOX VII, I believe they said) and better specs. This
information comes from someone who works for Pentax, but that's all I can
say. Take it or leave it, as you prefer.

a replacement for the fa 135 2.8?

2001-02-03 Thread Paul C

Lately I have been thinking of getting the FA 135 f/2.8, but since it has
recently been discontinued, I'm debating on whether or not to wait for the
replacement, if there is one. Does anyone know if or when there will be a
replacement brought out?

merci,

Well January's over, does anyone know if the 24-90 is available yet? I'm
thinking it would be a nice replacement for my 28-105 PZ.

Is the FA 24-90 going to be available everywhere at the end of the month, or
