K10D: date/time strange behavior (bug?)

2007-07-04 Thread Pedro Oliveira

Hi.

Today I detected a strange behavior with my K10D bought in Dec.2007
and with firmware version 1.20: the date and time are, always
2051/11/12 (yy/mm/dd) and 02:43.

When I correct the settings and press OK and return to the adjustment
menu the date and time are always 2051/11/12 (yy/mm/dd) and 02:43 (24h).

Besides that, if I try to activate the World Time setting the camera
freezes and have to take off the battery to reset it.

Also tried to see if it was hardware related: changed battery
(original and generic), removed grip, removed lens, etc, always the
same thing.

I confirmed that this happened somewhere between May, 26th and June,
2nd, two consecutive weekends. Between these two dates I don't
remember if I used the camera or not.

I don't think it is related to the firmware version 1.20 as I have
many photos taken with this version and the date is correct
(including a wedding with more than 600 photos).

Other than this, the camera is working flawlessly. It's a great camera.

Did someone notice this problem?

Thanking in advance.

Hi, Dario.

I've received my DA 12-24mm, and I've just shot a few pics. It performs
very
well on all respects, except for a rather evident CA, badly needing
correction in case of large format prints.
All considered, it tastes a lot like the DA 16-45mm, which I love so
much.

Warning: when using it, be careful to let the hood click well into its

lock position, otherwise you think its OK while it's not (and the shade
will
be visible in all pictures taken at 12mm). It happened to me.

Cheers,

Dario

Thanks, Paul.

The bridge shots (in 6x7 24x65mm folder) were made using 35mm Velvia
film in a Pentax 6x7 MkI camera. What you see is the intact frame as I
shot it. The only image that I cropped a bit is the vertical one (04)
because the horizon was not levelled. But I tend not to crop the images
(the great majority of the photos I make pp preserve the original
frame). But with digital I'm cropping more than I expected as it is
easier.

Dpreview's D200 jpeg overall conclusion: same problem different attitude?

2006-12-19 Thread Pedro Oliveira

Hi.

Just look at Dpreview D200 overall conclusion regarding soft jpegs
(third paragraph):

Quote:
What can make a difference however is how what's captured is developed.
Which brings us to the D200's default sharpening (for JPEGs), there's a
difference between avoiding sharpening artifacts and not resolving
detail captured by the sensor because of weak processing / sharpening. A
first time user of the D200 may well feel it is 'soft' simply because of
this decision made to have low default sharpening. Turn the sharpening
up or better still shoot RAW and introduce a subtle unsharp mask into
your workflow and D200 images are as sharp and crisp as you could
expect.
Unquote.

Don't you think that Phill Askey is clearly more benevolent with the
D200 than with K10D? I do.

K10D RAW (PEF/DNG) and Epson P4000

2006-12-16 Thread Pedro Oliveira

Hi.

I'll receive my K10D sometime between Christmas and New Years Day (Santa
is late this year...).

As I have an Epson P-4000 (no new firmware since Dec.2005) I wonder if
the K10D RAW files (PEF/DNG) are readable. I'm almost certain that they
are not readable but if someone has the chance to try it I would
appreciate a lot.

Thanking in advance.

2006-12-16 Thread Pedro Oliveira

Thanks, Jan.

Your information is quite valuable for me.
One thing, however, that is a pity is the fact that the P-4000 only
supports 2Gb SD cards. I guess I have to stick to the 2 Gb cards unless
there is a new firmware, which I doubt now from your information from
Epson at Photokina (there is always the solution of a CF to SD adapter).

Good question, I have the P4000 too, and the K10 since a week or so.
Had not tried it yet, so did a quick test now ...

 - RAW DNG: Not recognized/displayed
 - RAW PEF: Displays fine (extracts the embedded JPG)
 - JPG: Displays fine :-)

Of course the DNG files are stored fine, you just can't review them ...

Note that with JPG you can zoom in upto full resolution,
with the PEF, that is NOT possible (640x480 limit)!

Could be a good reason to save RAW+JPG :-)

Note:
At Photokina they showed the P5000 that has DNG support.
I asked if there would be a firmware update for the P4000
to allow that too, and the answer was 'unlikely' :-(

RE: 645 - 6x7

2005-03-14 Thread Pedro Oliveira

Are the 645 and 6x7 lenses interchangeable?

 eg: could I use my 105mm for the 6x7 on a 645?

You need an adaptor to put 6x7 lenses onto the 645, and you lose lens
automation.
645 lenses don't project a large enough image circle to cover 6x7,
and I don't think the 645 flange to focal plane distance is long
enough to allow a 645 lens to work on the 6x7 anyway.

RE: 645 - 6x7

2005-03-14 Thread Pedro Oliveira
Hi, Kevin and all.

Sorry for my previous post that was empty.

6x7 lenses used on a 645 body via the 645/6x7 adapter allows you to
maintain the lens automation and open aperture metering in the following
modes:
- aperture priority
- manual
- TTL flash automation

You loose these modes (because the 6x7/67 lenses lack the A setting):
- program
- shutter priority
- aperture priority automation achieved when the aperture ring is in A
(only 645 lenses has it)

Hope this helps.

RE: Photos of Pentax *ist Ds with 67 f/5.6 500mm and others

2005-01-28 Thread Pedro Oliveira
Hi Dave.

I bought the Fotodiox (http://www.fotodiox.com) kit here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3860687820

With this kit you use 35mm film in a Pentax 6x7, 67 or 67II body. You
make 18 pictures out of a 36 exp. 35mm film (you use the 220 film
selector and pressure plate). That's the big advantage. If your
intention is to make 24x66mm panoramic photos, you don't waste 120/220
film.

With the kit you get also a panoramic viewfinder mask that disciplines
the composition. You have a complete new approach to the subject with
this mask, different than with simple lines (like the Z1P/PZ1P). And it
is inexpensive (USD 98,00).

Right now, Fotodiox is not selling this item on ebay but you can contact
them via e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I bought a second 6x7 (very early Mk I, non-MLU) body just to have the
kit permanently on. This is my Hasselblad...

Hope this helps, Dave.

RE: Photos of Pentax *ist Ds with 67 f/5.6 500mm and others

2005-01-28 Thread Pedro Oliveira

You don't rewind the film.
There are two options:
1 - you can use an empty film cassette that receives the exposed film
and at the end you cut the film (watch out for the last one or two
photos).
2 - Or you don't use the cassette, only the interior and at the end you
use a changing bag to rewind manually the film.
I use this second option as I don't want the film to pass 4 times
through the 35mm cassette tissue. This way the film only passes 2 times
through the tissue, the same as 35mm cameras, X-Pan and Mamiya 7 (great
camera).
For some this can be a disadvantage but, for my type of photography, it
isn't. That is why I have a second 6x7 body for the X-Pan kit.

The photos are just tests, nothing artistic. They are all original, only

taken with the 67 500mm and the 1.7x AF adapter, a strange mix, giving

The originals were taken in JPEG *** 6 Mp.

pleasure. I recently bought a X-Pan panoramic kit for the Pentax 67. It
is wonderful to take pictures like the pricey X-Pan with a 6x7 body and
have them enlarged. All my medium format enlargements (only work with
chromes, Velvia, Provia and Agfa RSXII) are made with my Epson 2450 and
then printed in a Fuji Frontier, so I deal with the digital for several
years now.
You can see some pictures in the AOHC gallery

As I don't have means to post the pictures in a web site, I can send

 total of 1.8 Mb.

I can send you one 67MB processed *ist D image to show why I prefer it
over
35mm film :-)

Photos of Pentax *ist Ds with 67 f/5.6 500mm and others

2005-01-26 Thread Pedro Oliveira
Hello.

I had the chance to test a *ist DS for one week.
As I have medium format also (Pentax 645 and 67) I tried the DS with the
67 500mm f/5.6 along with the 35mm lenses (FA* included).
It was very interesting to try exotic optics in the digital age.
I must say that I'm still a film man, no digital yet for several
reasons...

them to someone who has that possibility. I prepared 11 photos with a

Or I can send it directly to anyone who replies to me directly.

Hope this helps to show the versatility of the Pentax System over the
years.

Hi all,

In my effort of understanding (guessing?) something better about the
*ist D,
I'll ask all *ist D owners to post the main part of the serial No. of
the
camera they own, together with date of purchase.

The two cameras I used and tested are both 5646*** (tested October
2003).

Mine is 5512*** (bought April 2004),

As you can notice, there's something odd in above figures, the higher
ones
beig apparently older than the lower one.

Thanks to everyone who will kindly participate in this survey.

Cheers,

Dario Bonazza

Now if Pentax can only put a full mount in the D
we'll all get one.

Great concept but they are going to have a hard
 time selling this one. The
price looks pretty high, the ISO is relatively low
 and the lenses are all
pretty slow (and not as small as one would
 expect).
Actually E-1 body is bigger and heavier by 150g than
*ist D. And it has only
5 MPix... You are right - only some specialized pros
 will buy it (mainly for
 weather sealed body and lenses)
