Re: Enablement and a question thereafter
When I go hiking to mountains for few days - I only take my 2 x 2 GB cards. Every gram is important :-) Peter B. 2005/10/14, Boris Liberman [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi! Thanks to a certain list member ;-), I am now enabled with Compact Drive PD7X. Wonderful little creature - can charge your batteries, can read your cards, can copy them onto its internal hard drive. All in all, now I have 12 GB more of space that I can take with me. Here comes the question. Say, I am a shooter shooting somewhere on some location. I have my two trusty 1 GB SandDisk cards and my quite reliable PD7X. One card is filled, I plug it to PD7X and load the other card to the camera. Then I repeat this trick when the second card is filled and so on. Here is the question. Why on earth I would want to buy a 8GB compact flash (for serious money) if I can buy a couple of 1 GBs and as much as 80GB hard drive for PD7X? I am not talking about extreme conditions or shooting with MF digital back. I am talking about regular amateur shooting with 6-8 MP camera on his vacation or some other favorite photo location of his. What do you say? Boris
Re: [Broken ist-D] I'm puzzled ... but happy again ;)
Now I'm HAPPY !! But I didn't understand anything. Maybe it'll fail again in 3 days? Mmm film is more reliable, really. I love my KX/MX's :D Hi Thibouille, I am happy that you are happy and hope your problems are over now. Hm, did they refuse to give you new camera in exchange for the bad one? Film is reliable, I agree. But for me, my *ist D is also reliable. In more than one year I did not loose single picture, so I believe your camera must be faulty... Regards Peter Belak
DA 50-200/4-5.6 in Europe
I found it in online shops for 250 euro. New owners, is it worth that money? Or should I go with used 80-200, 80-320, 100-300 instead? I need (want) AF tele, although I am happy with my A70-210.. Peter Belak
Re: DA 50-200/4-5.6 in Europe
Thanks. yes, I want to use it exclusively with *ist D (I have 16-45 and I really like it) I will wait for some more comments and probably go for it next month. It has the same feel as the 16-45, and I love being able to touch up focus after the AF makes its 'best guess'. The focus clutch is a brilliant feature. Sigma 105/2.8 EX macro - how good?
Questions again... I have chance to buy this lens new for about 2/3 of its usual shop price (in EU) and I am sure somebody here mentioned he uses it. I would like to know how it performs. My wife loves macro shooting and recently we only have Vivitar macro TC + 50/1.7, so this Sigma could be nice upgrade. I would like to have AF prime lens at about 100mm and was thinking about Tamron 90 macro. Which one is better for macro or portraits? Is this Sigma compatible with *ist D? How fast is its AF? Thanks for any feedback... Peter Belak
Re: Sigma 105/2.8 EX macro - how good?
I'd like to add that this is not the digital DG version, so I am bit worried about compatibility with *ist D. I can't test it before buying. Any experiences? Peter Belak
Re: Moving large image files through a LAN
Me, and I think Jostein suggested remote desktop (thin client). I am just curious if anybody is actually using it for photo editing? Are there any problems with such setup WRT photo editing? It would be nice to have fast server and not to tease my older notebook. Then wifi should be enough, I think. Re: Moving large image files through a LAN
Cable is the answer :-) I know wifi is nice, I have similar home setup. But to work with large files I always use wired connection. Or maybe you could use your notebook as thin client and let the server process everything.. Hi all, no questions today :-) 2 weeks ago I asked about this flash operating manual. Thanks for all replies, I downloaded it. I used the flash one week ago at mountian bike marathon, unfortunately I didn't have enough time to shoot more, as I was helping with organizing. I only got some shots from the finish: http://www.pepek.sk/akcie.php?cat=53 - for those interested. Flash was very useful in that bright sun to get details in shadows. I used it only in auto mode with *ist D + DA16-45 and A70-210. I really like it and will play with it more. Regards Peter Belak

Yes, the flash is nice, zooming looks correct with DA16-45. I just tested it with ex-yours A70-210, so far I am very happy. What ISO? well, from PDML wisdom I learned it must be ISO 400, so I am testing it with that value. Later I will try 200. It looks nice to me. But my wife doesn't allow to publish anything - you know, no make-up, she looks terrible, etc... This weekend I will be shooting at mountain bike marathon (I am too lazy to take part - did it for previous ten years) and I plan to play with the flash there. Any advice for using it outdoor? Re: storing photos in the field: OTG device
Hi Frantisek, after I got rid of ImageTank (usb1.1, 10GB HDD) I wanted something faster with integrated battery and large drive. Two weeks ago I found Apacer Share Steno CD211 at one online computer shop. It was cheap (1700,- Sk + VAT) for device only - no disk. So I also bought 60GB harddrive and small USB2 CF reader. After upgrading the firmware, the device can download files from *ist D, but I prefer using it with CF reader as it is much faster. I don't have exact times and did not test the battery operating time, but can do so this evening if anyone interested. I did not find any reviews of this small device, so maybe it is not a perfect one, but it was cheap and available here, and so far it works good (well, in two weeks I used it only about 4 times to download files from CF card). Specifications can be found here: http://www.apacer.com/apacer_english/product_html/share_steno_cd211.asp I am not that sure how OTG works with ordinary mass storage devices, but apparently ( http://www.printerboyweb.net/pro_stuff/LOOK/index.php - review of one such device) you can attach an USB card reader to it and it will work. It is also supposed to work with most cameras, although that seems reduntant to me if I can use a small reader - most cameras have slow reading of CF cards and a lot still have USB 1.1, while I could attach a fast reader to the for example e-look device. I just need some good storage now, and then shell out the bucks for a full featured device much later... Good light! fra Regards Peter Belak
Re: storing photos in the field: OTG device
Ahoj Frantisek, kde jsi ten Steno nasel? na atcomp.sk, myslim, ze je to pobocka ceskeho atcompu. Konkretne na http://www.atcomp.sk/presmerovani.aspx?goto=/zbozi_detail.aspx$$zbozi=53934 Now english: Yes, that's one of the units I was interested in. Please, after you know some more from usage, post it. Especially the transfer speeds from CF reader to Steno would be great. Will test this later today and let you know. The Steno has a built-in battery, is it removable? It is not removable. Well, you can remove it, but it is located under the hardrive, so you would have to remove that first. I would not want to do it everyday. battery holder (or I guess I could rig an AA holder plugging it into the DC-IN socket on the Steno). I plan to try it this way. I already got the 4xAA holder, now I need that power jack. It needs DC 5V/2.5A. Could you also try if it is USB bus powered (i.e. when you connect it to the computer as an external hdd to transfer your photos back, does it draw power from the USB bus, or do you need to use an external DC adapter?) It always uses its internal battery or a DC adapter. It has a power button and you have to turn it on, even if connected to the computer. When the battery is dead, it just doesn't start without DC adapter. Regards Peter Belak
Re: storing photos in the field: OTG device
Hi Frantisek, I tested the speed with CF reader. The details are: - Apacer Photo Steno II - 2GB CF card - iTec Pocket Reader USB 2 - 150 PEF files - 2039MBytes - total transfer time: 11 minutes, 50 seconds The Steno was powered from DC adapter. The bad thing is that there is no progress indicator. It only displays Backup with one to three dots when backing up, and Backup finished, press any key when everything went OK. Here is the picture of whole setup: http://www.pepek.sk/fp/steno.jpg I am taking the Steno for my two week trip to Egypt on friday and really hope it will work ok :-) I will report more on this later. Re: Opemus enlargers
Hi Alex, I am still using Opemus 5 with Anaret 80 lens for my medium format (Yashica TLR) occasionaly. It's fun and results are (30x40) perfect (at least for my eyes:-). I paid 15 euro for used one last year, but they were quite common here in Slovakia. Not sure about filters for IIa, but mine has filter drawer above negative holder. Now I see that meopta.com website is changed. Last year you would be able to download manual for all old products (czech or german language with pictures). Maybe you could email them... Regards Peter B. Update: it's an Opemus IIa; older than me! It comes with 2 lenses (a Belar and an Anaret), it seems to be working but I can't see how you could use filters for color. Now I don't know if I should go for it, or search for something more recent... mr. Wüthrich's enlarger sounds more tempting, even if I like to see things before buying them (and would be, certainly, more expensive).

Re: greetings
Vitaj v klube, Michal. Peter B. Greetings from a new subscriber! I am Michal from Slovakia, studying in Prague in Czech republic, though currently on term abroad in Tampere, Finland. I picked up photography three years ago when I bought a Pentax ME Super with M50/2.0 lens on Ebay. It was my first real camera. After a while I added ProMaster 28/2.8 lens (rebranded Cosina or Vivitar, I think) and M135/3.5, P30T, A35/2.8, the FA28-70/4AL zoom and another ME Super. At this rate, I will have 30 lens and 20 camera bodies by the time I am 40. :o) Equipment aside, I have been struggling with photography ever since I learned the basics. The more I improve, the more dissatisfied I am with my attempts and the wasted photographic opportunities. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I am still looking for the subject to concentrate and learn upon. It is still the best hobby I ever had though. :-)

Re: Russian lenses
I got Mir47k and used it for a year or so. It was quite sharp (BW enlarged to 30x40cm), but I used it stopped to at least f8. It is big and heavy, metal construction. It has coatings, but the direct light caused some flare sometimes at one side (I could see it in viewfinder). I could not use original filters, because they would block the mirror on my MZ-6. The lens has no front filter thread, but good point is that the Cokin P holder fits perfectly. I had no problems with colors. I used it also with *ist D - it was very good for the money ($90), but I sold it few days after I got DA 16-45. Did anybody tried these two lenses ? Are they any good ? Re: Long zoom recommendations
Hello Fred, I'd suggest, for manual focus lenses, perhaps the A 70-210/4, if that's long enough, or the Tokina AT-X 100-300/4 (one of my favorite lenses). Thanks for recommendation. I was thinking about A 70-210/4 and I even tried to get one on ebay, but it went too high. Is it really that good? Tokina ATX 100-300/4 - I can't find any available on ebay. How much is it worth? Re: FAJ 18-35mm
And what about another FAJ - 75-300mm 4.5-5.8 ?? Has anybody tried it? What are the results? Peter B.
Re: Long zoom recommendations
Yes, Peter, it is that good. Pentax made three or four manual-focus zooms whose results are, in every respect, indistinguishable from a great prime. The 70-210/4 is one of them. The others that come to mind are the 35-105/3.5 PKA and 75-150/4 (M? K?). Thanks for this. I already found one on eBay in MINT- condition, maybe I will try. Another PDMLer writes that the Tokina ATX 100-300/4 is available now at KEH for less than $200. If you don't mind manual focus--or, indeed, if you The only problem with KEH is that I am from Europe (Slovakia) and customs here would probably apply to this. It is bureaucracy and money :-( So I am trying to buy only items in EU or from somebody willing to ship as a gift :-) Peter B.
Long zoom recommendations
Hello all, I would like to add some longer lens to my small collection. The longest lens I have is my favorite M 135/3.5 - sharp and small. But I need some more. I could buy mint Sigma 135-400 quite cheap (350$), but I can't test it before I get it. I am bit afraid of its weight - is anybody here using it? Any experiences? Good, bad? Would I go better with some Pentax zoom in that price range? I plan to use it only for outdoor photography on MZ-6 and *ist D. Thanks for any hints.. and sorry for my english. Peter B.
Re: Pentax High End DSLR
My answer to the CF storage problem: 1. Invest in a used semi-powerful laptop($600 eBay). 2. Get an extra battery($? eBay) for it. 3. Buy an External 2.5 USB/Firewire storage box(~$50). 4. Buy a 40GB 2.5HD($82*)for the storage box. if 3GB holds 212 RAW, then 30GB(don't fill the HD!) holds 2120 RAW 4b. OR a 60GB($135*) if 30GB holds 2120 RAW, then 50GB holds 3533 RAW! Total cost (40GB HD) for mobile ist support roughly : $800US *Prices from www.pricewatch.com Note: of course if you could afford an ist, then the extras to support the DSLR would not be a problem. ;-) Comments on my solution anyone? /stands back with arms crossed. ;-) When buying external 2.5 USB/Firewire, why not buying something that has CF slot on it? I am using ImageTank with 20GB HDD (200USD, 2 years ago) and don't need to carry any heavy notebook. With some good 2000mAh battery it runs for hours - enough to fill the whole disk. The only disatvantage of this device is its USB type 1, downloading photos to PC takes ages. Looks like the time to upgrade. Regards Peter Belak
Re: AP liked the *ist 35mm best
Hi Bruce, BD I bought a film *ist as a backup to my *istD. Overall, it is quite BD nice and has enough features. Pretty usable overall. Certainly not BD an MZ-S by any stretch of the imagination, but at 1/3 cost, there are BD not very many features on the MZ-S that it is lacking. could you tell me how loud is the sound of the shutter (and mirror slap, and motor winder) of 35mm ist ?? Isn't it too loud? Compared to MZ bodies, eg. I am thinking about upgrading my SFX (which is very loud), and will have to choose from MZ-5n, MZ-6 and *ist.
