Thanks for the link. Without your response I wouldn't
have found it which would have made checking it
difficult without asking the list. :) I did google
the MZ5 for some time before sending my message to the

I wonder if they got it? I don't blame them - I think
the 5N featured exposure bracketing and depth of field
preview - the only two features I dearly wanted that
were missing from the MZ5. I'd bet that the Japanese
dumped the remaining stock of the MZ5 on the world
market while selling the 5N in Japan.

I wish I'd had the 5N, but the MZ5 has been a great
camera for the last (omigosh) decade.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I must have got the
MZ5 late in 1996 or early in 1997. If I can get my
brother and sister in law to remember when they went
on their Africa trip, I'd know for sure! My sister in
law used the Pentax on the trip and loved the panorama
feature so much she didn't want to give up the camera.
If I had all my negs organised I'd just have to look
for the oldest panorama to find out. ;)

Did anyone get the chance to have a look at any of my
gallery pictures? The oldest ones were taken with a
Chinon CE4s. I nearly bought a Pentax ME Super back
then, but the Chinon had more features for the price
and still had a Pentax K mount. Besides, I suspect
that the Chinon was a Pentax by another name. Does a
camera with a Pentax mount count as an "almost
Pentax"? 8^D

Rob
PS I'll replace the low res digital pics with some
decent scans of Provia 100F from the MZ5. Ahh,
Provia, I love that film...

Pentax MZ5

2006-06-20 Thread Rob Geraghty
Does anyone remember when the MZ5 (ZX5 in the USA) was
released? Note I am not talking about the MZ5N. I'm
trying to figure out when I bought mine!

I know I already had it in 1997, and I suspect I might
have got it in 1996. I think I bought it just before
the 5N was release, and I believe that's why I got a
"good price".

Thanks in advance,

Fair enough!

Also fair enough. Most of my photos were taken with
my Pentax MZ5, so they're not OT. However, quite a
few of the images currently in the Japan section are
stills from my Sony camcorder. I hope to replace them
with scans from the MZ5. The shot of Kinkakuji in
particular, as I have a shot taken with Fujichrome
100F which is wonderful.

My apologies to anyone who looked at the Japan
pictures yesterday. I didn't realise I'd accidentally
posted the original jpegs from the Sony, and they were
excessively large for the quality of the images. It's
a great video camera but a pretty ordinary still
camera. However, being relatively poor, I couldn't
afford to take as many on film as I'd have liked, and
the Pentax istD was about US$2400 at the time.

If anyone has any comments on the pics, I'd love the
feedback.

I just read that links to galleries are frowned on,
but I was keen to get some feedback on a few pictures
I just uploaded to my website. There's only a few
online at the moment but I plan to add more.

Most of the pictures were taken with a Pentax MZ5,
which I think was called the ZX5 in the US. A few are
stills from my Sony camcorder. Recently most of my
time doing anything photography related has been taken
up with editing video, but I love still image
photography. Sadly, I haven't yet got a DSLR.

OT: Fujichrome Trebi?

2002-02-13 Thread Rob Geraghty

Hi Folks,

I have discovered a new Fujichrome slide film in Japan called Trebi. Does
anyone know what it is intended for? It is a daylight film and the RMS
rating indicated that the grain is not as fine as Provia 100F.

Please reply directly if possible as I can't stay online long enough to
read all the digest messages.

Thanks!

MZ3 or MZS

2002-01-23 Thread Rob Geraghty

I don't think I am really in a position to spend US$1000 on an MZS, but
some of the features look really nice - especially the ability to print
the exposure details on the edge of the film. Is it really worth twice
the price of an MZ3? I am thinking of buying another camera body here in
Japan. I currently have an MZ5 and the MZ3 seems to have very similar features
with the addition of exposure bracketing.

If possible please reply (or cc) directly as I can't afford the online time
to read all the digests and I don't have the means to easily read them offline.

Thanks in advance, freezing in Japan,
Rob

I'd love to, but not possible in the time frame you've allowed. I live
in Australia, and who knows how long snail mail takes to get from here to
there post September 11. Even before that it took more than two weeks to
get to the US east coast.

Possibly a useful exercise would be to have a 6x4 photographic print and
a 6x4 inkjet print. This would easily demonstrate how much more information
can appear in the inkjet print compared to the photographic print.

I would wonder whether you could have pulled the same details out of a photo
taken with a digital camera as you've done with colour neg film and a PhotoCD.
It seems to me that with a digital camera you wouldn't get as much shadow
or highlight information as in the neg?

Pentax lens on Gold Coast - FWIW

2001-11-21 Thread Rob Geraghty

(this may be of interest to those in Oz, maybe not)

I dropped by Ted's in Southport today to ask if they'd heard anything about
Kodak dropping T400. They hadn't.

I noticed they had some 2nd hand lenses and asked if any were K mount.
There was an SMC Pentax-M 28mm f2.8 lens which they wanted AUD$120 for.
I considered it briefly but I don't think I'd see much advantage in it
over my existing Makinon 28mm prime (but I could be very wrong!). I'd rather
get some other prime at a focal length I don't already have.

(but please let me know if the 2.8 is a particularly good lens ;)

I don't know how cheap a photographic enlargement is in Canada, but here
they're about AUD$13. $4 for the ink and $2 for the paper to get a print
that may actually last longer than a photo sounds like a good deal to me.

I used to have an Epson Photo 700 and had a heck of a time trying to match
the screen to the print. I now have an 1160, and it's much easier. We
also have some 1290's at work, and getting a "nice" print out of them is
simpler still.

I can't talk about other printer brands really - all the "photo quality"
prints I've seen from other brands have been poor IMO - with very noticeable
banding.

If I was buying an A4 printer now I'd go for the Epson C80, which has individual
carts for the inks (a major bugbear in 6 colour printers like the 1290)
and the inks are pigmented and shouldn't fade for many years.

Yes, IMO it has become much easier to get a "nice" print. But your particular
interpretation of a "decent" print will determine whether the improvement
is good enough. Printing of colour images still seems much better than
trying to print B&W - B&W images tend to end up with colour casts.

Rob

PS One advantage of scanning 35mm neg film over taking a photo with a digital
camera is that the film captures a much broader range of data. Neg film
seems to capture more shadow detail than a digital camera. This gives you
more choices when printing.

Autofocus on MZ5 (ZX5)

2001-11-04 Thread Rob Geraghty

I've noticed that the autofocus on my MZ5 seems less accurate now than when
I first got it. Has anyone else had problems with this? The AF seems to
often settle on a focus that I can easily see is wrong in the viewfinder.
But when I first bought the camera, this didn't happen. The lens is a
Sigma 28-80 f3.5-5.6. I suspect the contacts between the lens and camera
may need cleaning, but I'm not sure how to do that. I also have to check
whether it is certain filters making the problem worse. Circular polarisers
don't seem to help.

It makes AF a bit pointless because I end up manually focussing.

Getting better lenses for my MZ5?

2001-11-02 Thread Rob Geraghty

OK, maybe not the very best because I doubt I can afford them. But I would
like to get one or two *better* lenses for my MZ5 (ZX5 to those of you in
the USA). I've noticed there's a significant difference in sharpness
between the Sigma f3.5-5.6 28-80 FA zoom and the old Chinon f1.9 50mm K
mount lens (circa 1981). The 50mm is much sharper, although it has some
chromatic aberration which is disappointing - but then it's a cheap lens.
It's frustrating to buy an expensive film like Fuji Provia 100F and not get
the most out of it.

I've been trying to figure out what the sharpest lens might be that I'd get
the most use out of. The Pentax 50mm lenses get a very good rating at
www.photodo.com, and it's a useful general purpose focal length. I'm think
that perhaps two lenses might be better - one for portraiture around 100mm
and another for landscapes around 28mm. My original idea was to get a
17-35mm zoom two go with the two existing zooms (28-80 and 70-300) to cover
the most focal lengths with the fewest lenses, but sharpness has become an
issue. I've really noticed the difference between lenses when scanning the
film at 2700dpi.

So far, the Pentax f3.5 100mm lens and the Pentax f1.7 50mm lenses look like
good value. Maybe for wide angle, the Pentax f2.8 28mm or f2 24mm?

Any thoughts?

Rob
