Re: Leonid meteor shower WAS truly spectacular
to all pug-sters- thanks for turning me onto the Leonid meteor shower. It was absolutely breathtaking. I would never had known of it's existence w/o u fellow pug-people. i'm in northern riverdale, a small neighborhood just north of manhattan, ny. i thought about going to watch the showers in nearby van cortlandt park but opted due to logistics and warmth to go to the roof of my 14 story building. so, my wife and i got my 11yr and 8yr old daughters up at 245am. with sleeping bags and flash lights along w/layers of fleece, gloves and hats, and a small notebook to record my efforts, we took the elevator to the roof. this was my 2nd attempt and a nite shoot. this past summer i tried, and was somewhat successful, taking the stars rotating over el capitan in yosemite. i used my mx on a slik tripod, cable release attached. i went w/the A50mm/1.4 and loaded 400asa polaroid color print film. i don't have a cable release for either my pz-1p or the zx-m, thus the mx. (i've got to get one a b+h but keep putting it off for no reason other than i never remember till i need it) i felt confident w/the mx. though it gave me metering problems while in yosemite (which is why i bought the zx-m and pz-1p), i knew the operation of this mechanical camera and felt like it should perform as expected. it was a very clear nite, nice and contrasty. the lights of the city were evident. there was a wind which chilled all of us quickly. we laid out the sleeping bags and looked up. nothing happened. we waited, still nothing. i've never seen a meteor shower. i wasn't sure what to look for. in all of my life i've seen, maybe...3-4 shooting stars. so we waited. in the cold. in the dark. w/two young kids and a wife on a nyc rooftop. and then it started. it streaked across the northeastern sky a little to the left of the big dipper's handle. everyone pointed and oow-ed and aah-ed. then another. more pointing more sounds of approval. then another in this direction. more pointing, only to be followed by short blast of white-blueish light, followed by longer trails of greenish-white in the opposite direction. immediately, i knew the 50mm was a mistake. there seemed to be no pattern as to where the meteors would appear. and they lasted only a moment. so i set up towards the dipper and when i sighted thru the viewfinder wished i owned a 35mm or even a 28mm so i could have wider coverage of sky. (i've got to get a 35mm/3.5-lost out on a eBay bid only a few days ago and know it's the next lens i will buy.) focused for infinity, set it at 1.4, tripped the shutter, screwed in the cable release and waited for something to cross my field of vision. i went to check my watch to time the shot. i had left it downstairs. just great. i checked the cell phone which had an illuminated clock. and waited for one minute. i didn't have to wait that long. a short blue one tore down thru the upper right corner of the frame. i waited and counted ten then unscrewed the cable release and had my 1st shot. i was thrilled. i set up my 2nd shot. sighted thru the viewfinder but it was black. i took the camera off the tripod and pointed to the street lights below. nothing in the viewfinder. it was black. i took it off "b" thinking somehow that was connected to the problem (i know it's not but i was reaching at this point.) i told my wife i needed more light and headed for the elevator. i got to the stairwell and sighted thru the finder. still black. anyone guess what was wrong? i didn't know. i took the lens off the camera and looked in. it didn't look right. i tripped the shutter, and the mirror dropped back into place! it was stuck in the up position. i looked thru the viewfinder. I could "see" again. i was back in business. back onto the roof. sighted some stairs. tripped the shutter. it sounded right. and i was off and running. over the next 3 hours i shot the roll of 24. i sighted stars (to make sure the mirror didn't lock up), tripped the shutter, screwed the cable release and waited for a meteor to cross my field of view. sometimes it happened immediately. sometimes it took 3-5 cold minutes. at one point, i found myself moving the camera towards where a star had just been sighted. sort of like fishing where the fish used to be. but i plugged away. the girls pointed and oow-ed and aah-ed. and we were all thankful. everything seemed to move slowly. we, as a family, huddled under the vastness of a november evening. humbled by the enormity of nature. saddened by the pain of sept 11th. a neighbor of mine, Billy McGinn, whose family was only 3 floors below me, was a nyc fire dept leut. and a great guy. his fire station was 10 blocks from the wtc. he was the 2nd unit to get to the scene. he was buried a few weeks back. and there i was in the dark and cold. i was with my family and i was very thankful. my wife and the 8yr left a

Re: mamiya/sekor screw mount camera bodies
fellow pug-sters- i'm thinking of getting some really cheap cameras for my twin nephews (12 years old, combative, obnoxious-they really remind me of myself at that tender age) they know that i take plenty of pix and have expressed some interest (when they're not being combative, obnoxiousu get the idea) being a pentax fan was wondering if u good folks could fill me in on the ills and virtues of the mamiya/sekor line of cameras? it seems that they are screw mounts but what of their meters, shutters and general reliability? since i ask only to use such info to distract my nephews from their true nature, would any of u see fit to suggest which of the mamiya models is "better" (less bad?) than other models? frankly, i'm trying to keep my purchase in the $25-$35 range. if i spent more, i would only be disappointed when i see my nephews using their "new" camera as a football or hockey puck, or weapon of foolary that could only appeal to a pair of combative, obnoxious, twin, 12 year old boys. that all said, i am really quite fond of them and would love to turn their energy to the "light" as can be found in taking pix. i welcome any and all thoughts. be well robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: can i use the self-timer as a cable release?
fellow pug-sters: i'm still learning my zx-m and wanted to ask a seemingly obvious question. i'm looking to shoot some longer exposures of autumn landscapes. i'm wanting to shoot at f/11 or f/16 to maximize dof. i meter the scene using the zx-m. in the upper righthand corner of the viewfinder i get the number 4 (1/4 of a second, right?). i have the camera on a tripod. can i use the self-timer on the zx-m, to fire the shutter at the proper speed? will there be too much camera shake for an acceptably sharp print? occasionally when i meter a darker scene, i get 20" (i imagine this means 20 seconds?) will the self-timer instead of a cable release allow me an acceptable shot? lastly, when i meter an even darker scene i get a flashing number, say 30" in the upper righthand corner. (i imagine this means 30 seconds?) what is the flashing telling me? i'm sure these questions are answered by the zx-m manual but unfortunately i don't have one. my only experiences w/longer shutter times was w/a mx and then i used a standard cable release. bottomline: can i use the zx-m self-timer as a cable release? as always, thank u for sharing your obvious experience. be well. robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: program plus isn't working...yet
To all Pug-sters: I've been so thoroughly thrilled by shooting 35mm that I've been casually mentioning my enjoyment to various friends. I assure all that this was done w/o any intentions other than "talking photography". Lo and behold, family and friends have been unearthening pentax bodies. I've recently acquired a zx-m from a family friend and today a program plus showed up. I put a A50/1.4 on it. I set it in the A position with the body on Auto but when I pushed the shutter down, nothing happened. Shutter didn't fire, no metering either. I opened up the back and everything looks "normal". I closed the back and tried the film advance but the film advance didn't move a budge. So I put a new set of two durecell A76 batteries. I put the batteries one on top of another with the positive (plus+) showing. No shutter, no meter. I reversed the batteries with both positives (plus+) not showing. Now with the camera set to manual I get a flashing "E" in the left window box under the frame within the viewfinder with no information in the right window box . After a moment, I depress the shutter and I suddenly get a meter reading but the shutter did not trip. The left window box has a "P" and film speed. In the right window box is the f/stop. I then set the camera to manual, opened the lens to 1.4. When I depressed the shutter I get a 250 film speed and a flashing "+3". Then I get only "1000" in the left window box and nothing in the right window box. I frame a different shot and depress the shutter and I get the same 250 film speed and a flashing "+3". I then shut off the camera and start all over. I set it to manual and get an occasional reading but also the blinking "1000" in the film speed window. The camera looks very clean. No chips or even scratches. The DOF lever works. The bottom is clean but the cover for the rewind is missing. (maybe a winder was used?) So, anyone have any idea what gives? Any and all thoughts are appreciated. Be well Robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: which flash for a newbie?
I'm a thorough newbie when it comes to flash units (and for that matter, many other things). i have a zx-m and a newly acquired pz-1p. i know the zx-m doesn't support ttl flash while the pz-1p does. my flash experience is limited to flashing lights on p/s cameras. in other words, non-existant. my needs are very basic: indoor portraits, outdoor fill. can someone please suggest a reasonably priced used flash unit (pentax or 3rd party) that will work seamlessly with either camera? any and all experiences and/or war stories would be appreciated. be well robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: pentax 35-80 f4/5.6 any good?

The F version of this lens was the default lens on my (M)Z(X) 50 kit. A lot of my PUG submittals were made with it. For an inexpensive, default lens, it is surprisingly good. An acquaintance borrowed a negative shot with it, and had a 20 x 30" print made. At any viewing distance except right next to it, the print is quite sharp. (Film was old Agfa Optima 100.) Then I decided to try the (now discontinued) Tokina AF 28-105, which is rated on Photodo as a sharper lens. In my experience with images scanned and printed at about 8 x 10", the Pentax F 35-80 was sharper than the Tokina, and the images had more contrast. Shots with the Tokina seem to lack contrast. I no longer have the Tokina. So, yes, this is overall (in my experience) a pretty good lens, and a bargain at the price. Joe >> - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 2nd body time: Prog+ or KX or, ta dah...the ZX-M!
hi ya pug-sters: w/my mx going down on the calif-yosemite trip, i'm longing for a 2nd body. i leave in three days for a two week stay on the rhode island coast and wanted to bring the pentax gear. i wish i could just "buy" a pz-1p. i don't have that type of cash. i almost managed to purchase that camera from someone on this list for a very fair price but i was 2nd. the zx-5n is interesting but it brings up the whole issue of AF and if i go in that direct, i'd perfer the pz-1p. someone mentioned a program plus. it has smiliar attributes of my cherished mx. i've always liked the way the me super felt but the lack of dof puts that body in doubt. the kx would suit my needs but are rather scarce at the moment. and then i started thinking about the zx-m. catch a break on eBay and u can purchase one for less than $100. i've read the reviews in the camera mags (pop said nice things, the brit mags love it). it has dof, tv, av, m, 2fps. sure it needs batteries unlike the mx and it doesn't have a metal lens mount but for less than $100 is there any reason NOT to buy a zx-m as a manual camera to be used w/my M50/2 and A35-105/3.5? as always, any and all thoughts are much appreciated. be well. robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. okay pug-sters, anyone willing to admit that they occasionaly use a point and shoot to take photographs? if so, what p/s do u use and why? i'll get the ball rolling...i use a konica big mini 302 35mm/3.5 to shoot black and white quick grab street shots. i love the lens, really small camera so no excuse not to have it all the time and it has +/- 1.5 exp comp (that is when i'm not using my canon ql17 GIII rangefinder w/a 40mm/1.7 for b/w) i also occasionally use an ancient canon af35ml w/a 40mm/1.9 for color prints. very quick lens and though clunky by today's standards, i just like the feel of this camera. that's of course when i don't have the mx in hand. be well robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. well, i did it/was: 1st zoom/A35-105/3.5
well, i did it. plunked down good old american coin (actually it was a us postal money order) and bought my 1st lens, a zoom no less, the KA 35-105mm/f3.5 w/ macro. sounds nice doesn't it? bought it for a "fair" price though i thought i could have gotten it for $20-$25 less but sometimes u push aside the extra sawbuck and buy it anyway. if all goes well, should be here this time next week. now, my questions are about a 2x teleconvertor. i know that such a device will not be of the optical quality of a true long prime but since one reason i bought the above zoom was for an upcoming trip out west and that i love telephoto compression, i was thinking a 2x could make the "new" zoom into a 70- 210mm. anyone ever use a 2x on the above zoom? results? should i only buy a pentax 2x or can i buy a 3rd party (such as the oft-sold vivitar) anything special i should look for in a 2x? thanks again pug-sters for your advice on my 1st lens purchase. it will go well with the mx and i'm hoping the results will merit my postings on the pug page. be well. robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
