I'm not sure i'm right with that model,i hope it's something simple.
Try taking the lens off and gently moving the shutter parts
up or down (very gently, only if the want to move)
That may be where it is jamming.

RE: yeahoooo! (new MX)

2002-06-07 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

Congratulation Mishka. In fact, I love my MX so much that
I have just picked up a mint one from eBay ;-), which now
makes a total of 3 - with my original rebuilt by Pentax a few
years ago, retired and displayed in my wife's china cabinet.

Although the winder lever does turn the light meter off.
If something keep hitting the shutter release button, the
meter will come on then off. Eventually, the battery would
be drain. So always turn the lock level to lock which also
turns off the meter ;-). Also, I don't know if you noticed
that the shutter cocking is racket type, which means you can
crank several times until the film is completely advanced to
the next frame. I used to get 1/2 superimposed picture and
I couldn't figure why until I realized that the film was not
completely advanced :-(.

It's a lot lighter than and smaller than your LX, isn't it ;-).

As my old MX promotional literature said, you're now the
"captain of your own destiny" (picture taking that is ;-).

Subject: yeah! (new MX)

Just picked it up as I got home from work: it was sitting patiently by
my door. After my ME-S is gone, I've been looking for a new home for my
pancake lens. So I ebayed it last week (together with M50/2), from down
under, for $95, including s/h -- the price seemed right :)
Looks great -- a very minor dent on the prism; a bit of paint loss on
the back hinge; some green stuff (oxidized) on the sync contacts -- but
not much, just needs a bit of cleaning; a bright spot here and there,
scratches on the baseplate... Definitely not a museum piece, but
overall in excellent shape. The shutter is in agreement with my LX
(maybe 10% faster at 1s, but that doesn't bother me). The meter was
overexposing a bit, and after I changed the screen to the one for LX
(SI-20 -- what a ddifference!), it seems to be consistently showing me
1 stop over. But that much I expected anyway, and that not too much of
a problem for me.
I love the meter is done -- very clever. It took me a minute to realize
that the wind lever turns it on and off, just like in N*** manual
cameras. Much better then ME-S.
Speaking of ME-S, MX is sooo much louder.
I hate the shutter speeds wheel. Much too tight to be convenient.
Everything else is just about right. All is left to do is to put some
film through it...

Just couldn't keep the excitement :)

I played with the AF version once. The close focusing distance
of over 5 ft is too far to get a good effect at the 35mm settings.
I have a 35-105mm f/4-5.6F and its close focusing of 4.6 ft. is
a problem too. The newer FA zoom focus down to 1.4ft is joyous
to use at wide angle setting (though ugly looking ;-).

Hi James,

I'm afraid you're gonna have to go to the library to get

the test came out very favorably. I have 4 other
F series lens and simply love its looks, the colorful
lettering, the charcoal color tone of the barrel, almost
like a work of art compare to today's ugly looking FA
lenses, which I also have but don't love ;-).

You didn't ask but SF1 was reviewed in Oct '87 issue of

RE: ProgramA, problem with aperture read mechanism

2002-05-22 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

Hi Petter,

You went to Africa with you friend didn't you ;-)?

The aperture is *never*, repeat *never* shown in the PentaxA,
SuperA, ProgrammedPlus or SuperProgramm body. This was one
of the weakest design of the A-series lens (the lack of
appropriate contact and info). The aperture is shown only
in programmed mode or shutter priority AE (on the bodies
that have this function). This was always the reason when
it came time for me to divorce one ;-), my Pentax MX won!

I'd be more worry that the aperture mechanism stop down
properly. If you have another body, use slide film and
take picture of the gray card (or a scene ;-) in manual
mode and see if the mechanism stop down correctly by
comparing slides.

Good luck,

Hi!
My trustworthy ProgramA is ill. I mounted a thirdparty 2X converter
(APK?) and made a wrong move somewhere. The 2X converter got stuck and I
had to use some force to get it off (bad idea).

I saw that the aperture read mechanism, that is, the lever thats
situated to the right in the lens mount if you look at the mount from
the front of the camera (please correct me if Im wrong), was bent. I
bent it back very gently and everything looked fine.

Until now. I can no longer get a correct reading of the aperture. If I,
in aperture priority mode, turn the aperture ring, nothing happens to
the time. It is as the camera no longer is aware of the aperture and are
stuck at the smallest aperture at all times. I do a very gentle bending
on the mentioned lever and all is fine for some days/months. And then
the problem comes back.

I have another camera now, but I would hate to throw away my old beloved
backup.

Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Pentax SF10

2002-05-11 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

Ola, Oscar. Que tal?

I used to own a Pentax SF10, my first Pentax AF camera. At the time,
I was intrigued by the two-segment metering and PROCES metering (a
fancy marketing term for automatic exposure compensation ;-). I didn't
like the SF1/SF1n center-weighted *only* metering.

I thought the AF was good, the built-in RTF was good. Shutter speed
below 1/15 goes blinking orange, but that's fine. Lack of depth-of-field
preview didn't bother me as much as I had thought. The PROCES metering
can be fooled if the subject isn't in the center, but the memory lock
comes in handy for this. Using memory lock or in metered manual,
only the central area which is larger than the spot meter area of the
PZ-1 is used which I thought was nice (sort of a poorman spot-center
weighted metering ;-). I got many, many good well-exposed pictures
from the SF10.

But the straw that broke the SF10 back for me ;-) was the lack of
exposure compensation. Thus, when using flash (RTF or TTL external),
it was totally out of control when I need to be in control! It was the
reason I finally sold it and use my MF bodies (MX and SuperProgram) for
a while. Later got the PZ-1.

I would be a lot easier to have 1/125 X sync. This way the X
can just be marked besides 1/125 and I don't have to twist the

So you need the MZ-5g, with shutter speeds from 1/100 and up. In that
case, they could probably mark them in half-stops on the dial for you. :)

not just
simply import MZ-3 into the US when the MZ-5 was going to be replaced.
Simpler
marketing and production model, one manufacturing line (i.e. why the

The reason for the MZ-S max shutter speed of 1/6000s, flash synch of 1/180s
and max FPS rate at 2,5 is that Pentax wanted to make a compact camera. In
order to make a compact camera Pentax needed to use a compact power source
- the CR2 batteries. Faster shutter and faster film transport would have
made the life span of the batteries unacceptable; perhaps well below 10
rolls of film on set of batteries.
This is the tradeoffs of a compact camera.

Pål
-

Thanks Pal (sorry, I don't have the right font for your name :-() for the
explanation. I'm a little slow at calculation; so please bear with me ;-).
I follow you so far regarding higher shutter speed using more batter power.
But I don't understand how the *flash sync* shutter speed can influence
battery usage. When I use ISO 400 film outdoor in my PZ-1 in programmed
mode, it is often that a shutter speed of 1/250 or 1/500 is selected.
Perhaps the RTF itself uses a lot more battery than the shutter.

Please clarify.

Apart from the features mentioned by others, one of the best features on
the MZ-S is how well aperture priority and manual mode are integrated. I
believe many Pentax users use aperture priority and manual as their main
exposure modes because these are the modes common on some of the Pentax
most popular models.
When I'm in aperture priority mode and want to change the cameras setting I
just turn the main dial until I get the desired exposure value; the cameras
goes automatically into manual mode. When I want the camera to
automatically set shutter speed again I just press the green button on the
front of the camera. In addition, all metering modes are available with the
turn of a switch. Hence, all modes i want to use are instantly available
without the need to scroll through menus.

Ah, Pal, I believe as you do too. I think advance user probably uses
Av and Manual mode more often (except those action shooter ;-). I myself
prefer to use the HyperProgram of the PZ-1 for quick or snap shooting
but switch to HyperManual by setting the aperature ring and set the
exposure with IF button. I guess I call this Manual Aperture Priority ;-).
I use HyperManual very often. BTW, is there HyperManual in the MZ-S?

You're right about having to scroll through the menu on the PZ-1. This
is why I only use the two modes mentioned above :-(.

Well, I've read the manual and it appears that the ZX-L can have
multi-segment
or spot metering. Worse off, it can only be switched by using the customed
function to program the AE lock. This means that when I use AE lock, I can
only have multi-segment or spot. Also, there seems to be no way to switch
to center-weighted metering unless I use a non FA, F, or A lens, i.e. older
M and K lenses! This is bad news for an old center-weighted timer like me
:-(.
Umm, another control taken away from the user. I suppose the tyro doesn't
use or need the various metering modes :-(. I just check the ZX-7 user
manual
and it appears that there is no metering modes selection at all.

Fortunatley, the ZX-5n (and MZ-3?) has all three metering modes, as well as
the MZ-S and the good old PZ-1p ;-).

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The Program Plus uses two 1.5V silver-oxide or alkaline

Thank you Bruce for the info you've supplied. First of all, I
suggest that we refrain from making remarks about the poster and
concentrate on the facts. This will be more helpful to the
originator of this thread in helping him/her decide.

I'm not writing a review of the MZ-S which is why there's no

those positive quality he/she likes. I'm only offering my
opinion of some of what I considered a negative quality of the
MZ-S. Please keep in mind that I'm not an SLR designer :-(.

Perhaps, but please bear in mind that the PZ-1 (same shutter as the PZ-1p)

Thank you very much for pointing out this info. The 360FGZ is a new flash

Relax, Bruce. I wasn't trying to criticize your MZ-S, only offering my
opinion. I'm entitled to an opinion, right ;-)?

I would, but at $800, I must be a little more cautious at my hard earned
dough ;-). When the PZ-1 came out, there was not doubt that it was the
SLR I wanted (despite its size and weight at the time).

Last but not least, can you tell us which features of the MZ-S got your

I certainly like the height of the RTF, 24mm coverage with red-eye

RE: Wide angle lenses

2002-05-01 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

Same here Paul.

Vice versa, I've found using MF lens on AF body "cognitive dissonance"
(LOL, may I borrow this phrase ;-). For example, I was using my SMC
Pentax-M 100mm f/2.8 and my Pentax-F 24-50mm f/4 zoom combo for while.
After a while, I gave up on using the 100mm because I found it much
slower to get focus right than on my old split-image/microprism screen
of my ancient MX! Call it the "idiot-light" focusing if you will :-(.
Also, those old MF lenses (M or A) annoyingly fail to show the aperture
settings in the viewfinder (in aperture priority AE and manual) on the
AF bodies :-(, something I've gotten totally spoiled since the MX ;-).

Optically, the 24/2 wins. But some of us find that using an AF lens on a
manual-focus body gives us cognitive dissonance. It just doesn't "feel"
right.

Re: LX screen in MX

2002-05-01 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

Hi Collin,

You can also take it in to your local camera store and have the light
meter recalibrated. I did it on my chrome MX when I slip in the LX
screen and the meter matches the gray card reading exactly (from my
new SuperProgram at the time).

Ron B[ee]
The Pen(tax) Pal

I replaced my screen and have found that the meter is off by almost exactly
1 stop. Close enough to simply adjust the ISO to that point and call it
"good enough".

Need advice - 24/85 or 24/100 combo?

2002-05-01 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

Hi,

I have an all manual SLR, the tiny Pentax MX. I've been using my
Pentax 35mm f/2 and 100mm f/2.8 combo with great success. This
combination amazingly does the job most of the time for all sort
of picture taking! Although dubious at first, the 100mm has an
amazing reach and yet still leave me far enough from the subject
(I can even enlarge and crop to get a *virtual* 135mm or even
200mm range ;-). So as you can see, my camera and I travel
extremely light ;-). I do use zoom lens almost exclusively on
my PZ-1 body (currently either my SMC Pentax-F 35-105mm or my
funky SMC 28-80 FA Taiwanese made.)

A few years ago, I started to use my Pentax 24mm f/2.8 as my standard
lens more and more. I've recently coupled it with the 100mm. I'm now
wondering if the range between 24mm and 100mm might be too far apart,
though I haven't used this combo enough to encounter any problem yet.
Would the 85mm f/2 makes a better pair for general purpose photography?
I'm only afraid that 85mm might be a wee-bit too short? Or perhaps,
the 15mm difference isn't something to worry about.

Someone suggested a 28mm instead of 24mm. I have a mint Pentax-A
28mm f/2 that I would never part it, but is currently retired in
the closet :-(. Years ago, I found it neither fish or fowl when using
by itself. I still use it for existing light photo now and then (the
last time being in Hearst Castle). Should I reconsider?

I'm **not** considering a zoom with this question as I use prime lenses
only on my MX.

Thanks for your combo advices ;-).

Re: Wide Angle lenses

2002-05-01 Thread Ron Bhanukitsiri

I was faced with these sort of similar question many years ago, Taka.

First ask yourself. Do you have an AF body? If not, you do yet one
in your future? If so, I'd get an AF lens; it can be use on both
bodies. If $$$ is no object, then what the heck, get both MF and
AF lenses ;-). There's a subjective feel to the MF focusing ring
that you can't get in the AF focusing ring, IMHO.

For your Super Program, unless size and weight is unimportant, I'd
go with the SMC Pentax-A 24mm f/2.8 if MF lens is what you want.
You'll be able to use the lens in programmed and shutter priority
mode. I have one that I use on my MX body that I'll be buried
with ;-). It's incredibly small and light and fit in my small
waste bag. I find myself setting the aperture first with this
lens and shutter speed later (i.e. aperture priority AE) anyway
since controlling depth is most often what I want. Keeping
checking eBay. It took me 10 years to find mine (mint condition)
at a photo show (before eBay that is)!

Personally, I don't like using zoom on my MF body and all of my
zoom goes onto my PZ-1 body. But if you consider a zoom, how about
the new 24-90mm? I'm drolling all over one thinking about it ;-).

Just one of my 24 opinions,
Ron B[ee]
The Pen(tax) Pal

Hi all- What do you all recommend for a good wide-angle lens? The only new
lens I can find wider than 28mm that isn't really expensive is the 24mm f2.0
SMCP-FA IF lens that B&H sells for $350. Any experience w/ this lens? I'll
be using it on a MF camera (Super A, Super Program), so if the focus ring
has a super-short travel, I'm in trouble. Taka -

ZX-5n and accessories for sale

I am considering selling my entire ZX-5n rig so that I
can get deeper into Digital Photography. Can anyone
tell the best way to sell all of the items listed
below? I have used eBay in the past, and considered
doing so for this package. Should I sell the whole
thing as a package deal, or should I piece it out. I
know what I paid new for all of this stuff, but what
does everyone thing the proper values of each item, or
the whole kit, would be?

I know everything works great. I just ran a roll of
film through it a month ago when my son was born and
the results were great. As for scratches or other
blemishes, there aren’t any. In all honesty, I
probably have run only about 20-25 rolls through since
I bought it. Any ideas on pricing and/or forums to
have the best luck selling this rig would be greatly
appreciated.
