Re: What's so different about the PEFs from a K100D?

2006-08-07 Thread brooksdj
Ralf.

Could be a subtle change in the software/hardware that is a pef.
I know thet each new Nikon Dslr has subtle changes and you have to buy the new
version of
Nikon Capture and View to
see these items.
However, Adobe probly have the K100D pef info and should release an updated ACR
soon.
If not, download DNG, convert and enjoy. Thats what i need to to for the D200
Nefs and CS
on the Mac.

Yes, it's a bit embarrasing when shooting for money. I never use the pop up on
the istd if
 a paying client is inc=vovled
now. Sigma on the istD or use the D200.

Nope.:-)
Its done this from day one, just never got around to sending it in. I try not
to use the
pop up anyway. Better results from
the Sigma
The Nikon D1 had a black screen even whan an older battery showed full or 2/3
etc. Turns
out its a voltage thing. Just
enough drop in an older battery tohinder the shot. Solution is to get a new
battery and
all is well again.

Could be the same thing on my istD, not quite as full battery as shown and its
hindering
the production of the shot.
However my daughters istD seems ok.

Just a few that caught my eye. They were/are
all lovely shots btw.

-Flatirons come in all Sizes-PJ Alling.

Nicely exposed and interesting building. Nice sky.

-Kirk in the Hills-P Stenquist.

Good framing, and a "Haunted House" effect.

-Orvieto Cathedral-G. Irlanda

Love the blacked buildings as frames. Nice lines and colours on the main
building.

-Pueblo Bonito-J Tainter.

Well exposed and the brick detail is great. I love the off setting wall lines.
Sort of a
"Beetle Juice" effect.

As stated, well done people.

My D2h is a lot worse than my D200, which i don't find bad for noise at all.
If i have to shoot the D2H over 320 iso, under cloudy skies, its bad. You
notice it in the
riders face. I
have not noticed as that bad on the D200.

At Xmas time i took a few indoor baby shots under florecent light at iso 800
and printed
an 8x10 for the
Mom. It ;looked very good, but then again at iso 1600 in the arena under
extremly poor
light, it was
noticable. But i bet any camera would have been bad with that light.

My istD is good for noise.

istD and Sigma 500 Super wireless test

2006-08-01 Thread brooksdj

http://www.caughtinmotion.com/paw/wireless.jpg

Taken Saturday night at GFM this year, after Rick Webber and i played
around and
finally got the
flash and camera to talk to each other. I forget if it was Rick Womer or Scott
Loveless,
that held the
extra bit of info that seems to be absent from the manual.

Thanks to film's last crusader, Tom Reese, for being the tripod.:-)

Nothing fancy, but a camp fire type photo for fum.

Alternatives to iphoto for jpg viewer

2006-08-01 Thread brooksdj
I think someone asked this a while back, but i can find nothing on it.

I'm not a fan of iphoto to do customer slideshow views on my ibook, don't like
having to
load into a
folder and then load into iphoto.
Can anyone recommend a viewer other than PS browser, for me to try. I diid a
Google, but i
seem to
only get windoze ones.
I lik my older PC version of Acdc, so something along that line.

Photo thefts. What to do

2006-07-31 Thread brooksdj

I have been noticing for some time now, through photo thread links on the
equine BB i help
moderate,
that a lot of not only my shots with water mark, but a number of other
photographers
pictures are
being "right clicked" onto Weshot photo albums and displayed as their own.
Webshots has a
policy of
only owned images may be placed and violations can be reported.

Personally , i think its now gone to far, and i need to do something about it.
They are
even lifted and
used in for sale ads with the copyright still on the photo.

I do my pages either in PS Gallery maker or for the most part (99%) Breeze
Browser Pro.

Any way i can stop this. Right click codes etc.

I know these can be broken, but i'm dealing mostly with a female crowd of
between 7 and
16(not that
that makes a difference)and ii'm sure if they cannot steal my pictures, they'll
just move
on to someone
elses.

Any help or suggestions.

Sales are WAY down this year. :-(

Part II Conversions, IR

2006-07-19 Thread brooksdj

I tend to shoot, so far, my IR shots with the R72 fillter, at somewere around
F 4 and shutter of 1/30 or 1/20.

This gives me a histo with mostly midrange pixels, say from 50/60 to 180 plus
or minus. If
i try and get a
good mountain histo 0 to 240 or as close as possible, the shot looks horribly
over
exposed. This would
be in the F4 and 1/4 second range.

What should i be looking for here. I seem to have ~some~ decent results with
method 1, and
my GFM
photo was using these values.
Is it because the filter is cutting out a large amount of the visible lihght
that i'm
getting the mid range
mountain as aposed to the overall mountain histo. Is the midrange histo giving
me the
proper exposure,
even though it looks wrong as in normal colour shots.

Just trying to fiqure this stuff out, 1 step at a time

Conversions

2006-07-17 Thread brooksdj
Hi gang.

Pondering over this the past few days, well not Sunday, i was more concerned
about dieing
in the
heat, than this,

Converting to B&W. i seem to have a 80-20% nogood/ good ratio. Just wondering
were i
should be
spending my time. In the colour stage adjusting the file or in the converted
stage.
Getting good contrast
seems to be my biggest problem.
IR seems the bigger miss. Getting the false colours to a good B&W.

Maybe i';m just not clear on what i should be looking for or to.

Any suggestions.

when people
THINK i'm a PRO with my

However ndoing a full shutter replacement at 9800 frames was a bit of a bummer.

The istD came out and every one balked or held out. Then WW
bought one and
gave a favorable review. Then,
slowly alot of PDMLers came over to digital(i already had my D1 at this time).

Now that we have seen the istD/DS/DS2/DL will we be waiting to see if there are
problems,
or will we dive in head first when
they hit the stores.

I for one will wait a bit. Still smarting from the D2H header i made.:-) but

Re: web page uploading

2006-07-12 Thread brooksdj
As suggested to me by others, i create a folder through the ftp client i
use(fetch) and
put my photos in
that file with the index the web page made.
That way everything works together. Example, pictures taken at the horse show
this weekend
will be
in folders 2006-chancefri
2006-chancesat and 2006-chancesun.

So my link would be www dot caughtinmotion dot com / 2006-chancefri/index dot

I have found i don't need the last bit with the index, it just goes there.

Hope that helps

I have the ibook G4. I don't have my receipt here ay work, but its something in
the area
of 1.33 to 1.8
Hz. I bought it last September, and i THOUGHT it was to have included 2 usb 2
slots.
Both cards read at GFM, and at home for that matter, were the 2gig Sandisk
Exteme III
cards. One with
Nikon Nef/Jpg files and the other with Pentax Pef files.

Its at least 20 min for a d/l.

I never timed my PC Windoze XP home SP2 with usb 1 slots, but going through
PS's download
screens
take about the same time, more or less.

Re: OT: Why do you take pictures?

2006-07-10 Thread brooksdj
Why do i take pictures.

Well the horses make me money.

However...

I take my personal photos for probably this reason. I tend to find myself
living in the
past, or wanting to
live in the past, so to speak. I don't take well to changes, radical or not.
Stouffville
is getting a Wal-Mart. I
m having difficulty dealing with this.:-)

For that reason, having rampant development in the area i reside in, makes me
want to
capture the
existing, simpiler way of life, the farm and its people and machineas and
animals, before
they are all
gone.

As far as landscapes, we live on one of the best planets around. Why not record
its beauty
and
funcionality.

Just remember after all ther oil is gone, and we have blown our selves all to
bits, we'll
look like any
other planet out there. Whats the point of photographing that.:-)

Re: Newsworthy Photo - Burst Fire Hydrant

2006-07-04 Thread brooksdj
Nice shot Shel.

I had been trying for 20 years to get a picture or letter into the l;ocal
paper. February
i managed several
from a fund raiser. The editor was there with a P&S, saw me, came over and
chatted for a
second,
looked at my gear, and said"You seem to know what your doing, heres my card,
email me some
from
this thing.", and left.

Next month i had a letter to the editor published.

When it rains it pours, or at least get wet from fire hydrants.

LOL

Looking for P&S Recommendations

2006-07-04 Thread brooksdj
Hi all.

I'v decided to try and get some poundage off this old body, and have recently
started bike
riding around
town. The added weight of even the smaller Lowpro treker is a bit to much, so i
thought
i'd get a P&S
digital and just keep it in my pocket or clipped on the bike some were.

Any suggestions. 4-5 megapixels are fine. I'm also going to buy a new guitar,
my old one
is
unrepairable froma bridge seperation, so i'd like to keep the price to about
$300 or less.

I thought it was the F 80-200 that was the dog.??? Oh well.:-)

I used this 70-200 instead of the 50-200. I looked through some shots taken in
May with
the 50-200 and
some were nice and sharp and contrasty, and others were not. Proabaly because
of me, but i
thought
the 70-200 might give more consistant results.
Have not really looked at to many to assess, i used that pef2jpg program to get
some jpgs
to a slide
show for the family, but they tend to be on the flat side. Program is fast and
worth while
if you just
want something for a quick view and slide show. The ones i'v looked at in Raw
PS seem to
have nice
colours.

Thnaks for the kind words Don

2006-07-03 Thread brooksdj
One from the weekend.

istD with FA70-200 and shot in Raw. Converted in PSCS to B&W R=80,G=20,B=5.
Constant-2.
Some S/H but only a tweak.

This is the front four of Nuraw Blooze. Guest singer is the guy to the right of
the guitar
player.

Not as contrasty as i wanted, but nice enough i think

That was my big concern. At the shows the dust was horrible and embeded just
about 50% of
the shots.

Its ok in house if you give the paper a good dust off.

Its for sale BTW.:-)

I never noticed the "plastic" look until i compared some last year. Now i realy

Geso: July 1st fun shots

2006-07-02 Thread brooksdj
Hi Gang

Happy Canada Day to us and happy July 4th to our USA friends.

Shott about 250 Raw files at our festivities Saturday, and i was just
experimenting a bit
with these Pef to Jpg converters.
for Mac.

Bit of a pain.

The gallery below are some shots i like from Saturday, converted to jpg from
pef with no
additional colour correction etc.
I used PSCS browser for the first time and flagged the shots and made a web
page.

I didi not want the watermark but its there so for that i apologize,.Its not
offensive
anyway.

http://home.ca.inter.net/brooksdj/index.htm

Just some fun shots to share.

Comments welcome

There is also the A,B & C shooting menus. Set each up for your various shooting

and then all you need to do

I find the menu and setup of the D aLOT easier than its Nikon sisters.

Nikon has a ton of sub and subsub menues.

I still get totally confused when i change something.

pictures
taken from the

RE: using cards across camera brands

2006-06-27 Thread brooksdj
I have put cards from the Pentax into the Nikons, with pictures still on the
cards, and
can see the
pictures, but they are sometimes distorted, for lack of a better phase, they do
not fill
the lcd only a small
portion.and the colour sometimes looks like a rainbow.

Formatting seems to help.

LOL

OT Attachments from the list

2006-06-27 Thread brooksdj
I keep getting the odd mail, through the list, with an attachement
symbol.
Recently my reply to
Ralf's photo has this symbol but i sent no attachement.

Bug in the list maybe.?

Just doing my duty and reporting misadventures for Doug.

Re: iview pro

2006-06-27 Thread brooksdj
Godfrey.

Can you tell me how much control you have in the batch rename.

I don't want to rename all the files at once to one system, but select random
photos, keep
the frame
number and extension but rename the DSC_ Tto a rider number. I have one for PC
that lets
me pick
individual files, not always inorder and do this.
Will imedia do this or does it rename only in in sequence batches.

I did not explain that well, but hopefully you get my drift.
