Any wall wart with the right voltage and polarity would work, unless it was
designed for something using microscopical amounts of power and the camera
needed more. The output and polarity should be marked on the charger. You can
buy ones with multiple tips, variable voltage and swappable polarity for about
1/4 of the price of the Pentax/Ricoh one.

"As of April 11, 2017, Windows Vista customers are no longer receiving new
security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options,
or online technical content updates from Microsoft. Microsoft has provided
support for Windows Vista for the past 10 years, but the time has come for us,
along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources towards
more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new
experiences. "

I look after a Vista laptop for the local branch of the Red Cross. It refused

Re: Semi-OT: Maybe getting a new laptop?

Memory upgradeability, for hungry apps, is probably the only real hardware issue
for older appliances. My Aspire One netbook used to be "make a cup of tea,
properly" slow from a cold start on XP. Now, it's about 40 seconds from
pressing the button to opening Firefox.

Re: Semi-OT: Maybe getting a new laptop?

2017-05-27 Thread mike wilson
Pull the drives, stick them on a dock to extract any data that you need.
Reinstall them and put on your distro. Put the data back. Kapow! A laptop
that will run better than it ever did with W7 for the sum of, Oh! nothing!

The bonus is freeing yourself from the Adobe yoke.

George Melly said that the bonus from getting old was losing your libido - it
was like being unshackled from a lunatic. Think of LINUX and Adobe in the same
way.

1. It's infinite orders of magnitude cheaper. (Not everyone can offset their
computer-related purchases against tax)
2. You get more serious problems with Windows and Apple stuff anyway. And
you've paid (mightily) for that.
3. It extends the life of hardware significantly, by clogging it up less with
crap.
4. As we're talking about crap, there's much less of the stuff around LINUX
installations. Fewer trivial apps; no viruses; no fecking paperclip.
5. You don't have to deal (much) with Adobe. Not at all if you want to be
hardcore.
6. You get to learn stuff.
7. It works perfectly well.
8. Did I mention that it's free?

Re: WG-1

I'm usually incredibly anal about checking that there is nothing compromising
the seals but have to admit, on this occasion, I failed to do so. I can find
nothing wrong with the camera at all but it ended up with a tide mark halfway up
the LCD. Even then, if it had been fresh water there might have been a chance -
pool water is catastrophic for electronics.

WG-1

2017-05-21 Thread mike wilson
I discovered last weekend that my WG-1 is, sadly, less W than I would have
liked. Much puzzling over the dismantling prodecure led me to our favourite
search engine for an hour or so, where I eventually found the following page.

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Pentax+Optio+WG-1+GPS+Teardown/36657

Mine is not the GPS version, so I can testify that this procedure works for
other variants. If you want to take the front cover (the anodised metal thing)
off, you need a T5 Torx driver as well as the number 0 Philips for the rest of
it. My example is decidedly toasted. Not only is there corrosion on
electronic components, a couple of the ribbon connectors disintegrated as they
were disconnected. I therefore have an almost complete set of non-electronic
spares for anyone who might need them.

Re: Traveller, if you come to Ashford, Kent...

2017-04-25 Thread mike wilson
And now the bad news. You can safely ignore it. It's an invoice, not a fine,
and the legally agreed limit is recompense for any time you used filling the
space which could have been sold to another user. As you actually had a ticket
for the time used, it's doubly irrelevant.

The only ones you actually have to pay are the local authority fines, which are
enforcements notices of local laws. You can end up in prison for ignoring
those.

OT Waiting for Bobot

2017-04-16 Thread mike wilson
I was hoping to show a pic or two of BobW and his friend Don holding their bikes
aloft after completing the UK's sea to sea cycle route.

Unfortunately the two shattered remnants of humanity that hove into view this
afternoon, begging for hot chocolate and other warm sustenance after the weather
took a decided turn for the arctic, were hardly able to hold themselves aloft,
never mind their bikes. It would have been more than cruel to point a lens at
them. So I didn't. But we were all very impressed at the intestinal fortitude
displayed.

Interesting. The Motic microscopes at work have quite awful spherical

RE: OT - Oxford comma helps in legal dispute

Nothing to do with an Oxford comma, sadly. The OC is the superfluous comma
inserted by ruffians and ne'er-do-wells, in a list of three or more items,
before the word "and" or "or" that is before the final item. It seems to be an
aid for those of limited comprehension.

Re: Anyone ever turned a room into a camera obscura?

2017-03-11 Thread mike wilson
We had one in a previous incarnation of my department. The present building is,
sadly, not suitable.

If there are physics labs in the Uni, they should have proper blackout
facilities for light experiments. Even the LEDs on alarm sensors will spoil the
effect. Hopefully, one of the rooms will have a decent view and a suitable wall
to project onto or a place to fit a screen. Then you need to work on getting
them to agree to you making a hole in their blinds

Petzval's formula will give you the optimal diameter of pinhole for sharpness.
d=2times the square root of f times lambda
d = diameter
f = focal length (pinhole to image plane, mm)
lambda = wavelength of light (nm) [choose something from the middle of the
visible spectrum, about 500]

Hole needs to be as clean and round as possible, to reduce higher order
diffraction effects. You may need to both make the hole in something that you
attach to a bigger hole in the blind (for cleanliness of edge) and make the hole
bigger than optimal to reduce the acclimatisation time required to view the
image.

World pinhole day in April..

Beg to differ. It pretty much does what it always did, given allowance for the
vagaries of time, plus it has bonus qualities. As an example of how it improves
over your first girlfriend, I'll ask how much you want for the AF-1W and I'll
check to see which screens I am missing from my set. I bet you didn't get any
financial return from your other candidate in the useless stakes.

Someone I know from the Perth hills in Australia was going to go for a ride the

That's 55degrees Centigrade (131 in Funnymoney) so he decided to wait until
evening.

Here, it's dead normal February weather. ~0degrees, leaden skies (for weeks,
seemingly) and perpetual drizzle/sleet. I think I need vitamin D injections.

Masham railway station is a chronological anomaly that only appears when its
favourite son comes visiting from t'big city down south. It's the other train
that goes from platform 9.75 at King's Cross. One of the staff was born in 1863

Thee's something about secondhand wheelie chairs. On the same day, I was
leaning out of mine and my daughter came in to hug me. Over we go, me landing

intertwined with Katy so that we couldn't move until Cath came in to help. I

So my "there, there" consists of recycling the beast with a "This damned chair
