A suggestion for all these freaking email tests...

2015-01-13 Thread Darren Addy
I realize that all these email tests make the PDML look more active
than it really is, but if you'd like to make the list a little more
interesting you could email actual content or discussion (maybe a
PESO) instead of a "TEST" email. And THEN, to see if it was received
by the list, you could simply check the PDML archive:

http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/

Click the "Date" link in the line for the current month and you'll see
if your message hit the list. This archive appears to update almost
immediately. No need to wait for anyone to reply to you for you to
know your "test" worked (or didn't).

As a bonus, you'll look a little less like a technical troglodyte to
the community! thxkbye

I think that if some one has a photo that illistrates a quote be it
Pentax or not, should be allowed. After all the submitter is on a
Pentax list. Close enough for me.:-)

Actually, it is. Brings up an interesting point, though. Are we restricting

Since I take mainly landscape shots, unlikely. But, okay, I'll look around.

Marnie Uh, might be a Canon shot though. Which isn't very PDMLish.

For now, either: look through the quotes and see if you have a picture that
might illustrate one of them or see if you have a picture that you would like
to have published. Send me a link to it off list, specifying the quote, if
needed.

Oh I agree, & I'm planning to find some time to got through the
quotes, and try and find a suitable image from my archive. But it's
going to take time, what with the silly season & work commitments (and
work related silly season commitments :-).

And as I said previously, if the process takes too long and there is
no one driving it, it'll die before it was born.

I think it's a great idea of Mike's, but I'm just playing devils advocate.

Since the quotations have already been selected (well, the 2007 list
will be on line in a couple of weeks), I think it would be fun if
anyone who wanted to participate selected one of their own photos to
accompany or illustrate someone *else's* quote. (Heck, even illustrate
one of your own quips if you've got something good.)

The lists so for:
http://www.robertstech.com/quot2006.htm
http://www.robertstech.com/quot2005.htm
http://www.robertstech.com/quot2004.htm
http://www.robertstech.com/quot2003.htm

I suppose there's nothing wrong with just picking a photo you'd like to
show off, either.

But I think it would be helpful to Mike of participants did actually
buckle down and make a *decision*. That is, pick a photo rather than
just pointing to a page of shots and expecting Mike to go through them
all.

I don't think the quoted person supplying the pic will work, at least not all
the time. If anyone has a pic that they think fits a certain quote, please
contact me (off list will be fine - we need to retain some element of suprise
with this publication) so that I can start making sets up.

I foresee pages with groups of quotes on one side and an illustration of one of
them (or an entirely different quote) facing.

I built my darkroom under my steps, so the area where I have the enlarger
has a very low ceiling above it. I'm also 6'4" tall, so I have my
worksurface mounted at about 38" high for comfort. I could lower that for
the enlarger a little, but it would be a major pain in the butt, and I'd
probably never get it level again.

Of course, but with rare exceptions using wider than normal
focal lengths is not recommended. Darmed if I can recall where
I got that information - I know one source was a comment that
Ctein made on the photo list on Compuserve some time back, but I
also read it in a few places. Enlarging lenses are optimized
for a particular range of magnification and working distance
from the baseboard.

That said, there's a wide angle (not just a shorter focal
length) made by Rodenstock that is one of the few exceptions to
the rule. It's the Rodagon WA, however, the lens is
specifically formulated for the purpose, as opposed to just
using a shorter focal length to get greater magnification on the
baseboard.

Go to http://www.rodenstockoptics.com/enlarge_index.htm to find
out more.

I don't know if this helps, probably won't, but I have a Beseler 67cp (along with a
full assortment of trays, tongs, tanks, bulk loader, etc.) that I'm thinking about
putting on Ebay to help fund lens buying. I believe it is capable of 6x7 and the
column reverses for floor printing. I bought it a few years ago (before child #1)
with the hope of setting up a darkroom but now with two kids under 3 I've resolved
myself to the digital darkroom for now. For all I know this is a "cadet" enlarger
like you mention. I don't have a manual but you seem to know what you are doing?

Hi,
Well, I've done my research in this one horse town, and it don't look
good for getting my extra large prints done by a commercial lab locally.
(I've got a buyer for some of my black and white scenics, but she wants
very large prints: 24x30 and beyond from 35mm negs!)

I have the option of trying the negs done in color chemistry. And I will
have that done tomorrow, just as a test, to see how they do. The guy at
the lab didn't sound real hopeful.

Do any of you guys (and gals) have any experience with printing B & W
negs on color paper, and then in color soup? (we're talking about
extreme enlargements, too.)

So I think that after this little experiment fails, I'll be shopping for
an enlarger to do up to 24 x 30 or thereabouts in my soon to be expanded
darkroom. I have one of those Beseler "Cadets" right now, so I know I
need a real one for something like this.

The digital route still has merits, but my research and my instinct
tells me I should hold off on this until I've made a few sales and have
"spread myself around". By then I should (hopefully) be able to charge
the kinds of prices needed to cover the much higher cost of "going
digiital" (and getting archival quality output-- I just don't trust the
durability of dye sublimation and especially inkjet-- not yet) . Some of
the figures I was quoted were breath-taking. (or breath stopping,
actually)

So: I'm sure everyone here (almost) has a favorite, and why you like it.

I need it to be sturdy enough to get those very large prints I've been
talking about. I am using a condenser version now, should I consider a
dichro or variable contrast head? (I'm almost certain I won't be doing
any color work, now or in the future)
Cost is a consideration, but since this machine will (fingers crossed
here) be a business investment, I want something reliable, robust, and
able to do big prints, from 35mm and med. format negs. Maybe a large
format camera is in my future?

I will rebuild my darkroom around this enlarger, so compactness or lack
thereof is not too much of a consideration.

Well, any suggestions?

Thanks, as always for excellent advice.

Re: Time to buy an enlarger! Got a suggestion?

2001-02-05 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Hi Sid ...

A good option is an older Omega D-2V or D-2VXL. They can make
large prints on the baseboard (the XL can make VERY large prints
), and can be used for floor projection as well. The
variable condenser allows the use of numerous formats, and the
thing is built like a tank. Go here for more details:
http://www.classic-enlargers.com/

Harry's prices are a little high, but his information is
accurate, his quality is good, and he does have the goods. He's
a great source for parts and supplies, too. These enlargers come
up on ebay frequently, and can be found in any number of shops
specializing in older equipment. Newer versions, such as the D5
series, are much more expensive than even Harry's prices.

FWIW, I've an Omega D-2V and a Beseler 23C-II with a dichroic
head.

And don't skimp on enlarging lenses. El Nikors, Schneider
Componons, and Rodenstock Rodagons are all good, but check each
lens before buying it. There are often enough variations in
lens quality that it can make a difference in the quality of the
prints - especially large prints.

Don't get a color head. Either get something that will easily take
contrast filters, or get a VC constant exposure head.

You can control contrast by using the M and Y on a color head, but it
screws with exposure and makes life miserable.

People may tell you a color head is ok for b+w. Don't believe the hype,
unless it also has a filter drawer and you plan to do some color.

Want to buy my Saunders D6700? ;)

> Cost is a consideration, but since this machine will (fingers crossed
> here) be a business investment, I want something reliable, robust, and
> able to do big prints, from 35mm and med. format negs. Maybe a large

Well, I'm in a similar boat, looking at something to replace my
Saunders. It won't be another Saunders, and I can't afford a VCCE 4x5
(>$2k new) right now.

I want a VCCE head. A good filter drawer would be ok, but with the color
head I've gotten used to making very small changes in contrast. You'd
save some money by going the drawer route.

The options for me are the Durst M670, Kaiser VPM 9005, Saunders
670VCCE, and
Beseler 23cIII.

I ain't buying another Saunders. I don't think the Beseler is constant
exposure ( I may be wrong, but their literature doesn't say so).

I think the Kaiser or Durst may be my solution...the Durst is about $300
cheaper, but the Kaiser can print up to 6x9, and may be more expandable.
I may have to drive up to B+H.

By the way, I don't think any enlarger will do 24x30 without having to
project on a wall...I think 16x20 is the limit for a MF enlarger. You'll
need to project on the floor or wall. Better enlargers can rotate the
head for wall projection.

Of course, you could buy a used 4x5...or mount it on the wall and
fabricate an adjustable bench...or use 2 enlargers...or...

I have a 17"monitor - have the display at 800x600, bold variable width 11

width.

Tom the mystery is only when I receive posts that have , instead of text in
the body of
the mail, the following:

> >Part 1.1
> > Type Plain Text (text/plain) Encoding: 7bit
> >

Is this MIME? Is that the problem???

Anyway, sometimes when I open these it is plain text, not bolded (of course)
but nicely
all of the mail appears right here on my screen. But other times the entire
body of the
text goes streaming off into lala land in one continuous line - as if it were
written in a line editor that permitted 200 to 300 characters. Mostly these
post come from AOL folk.
IF I highlight and copy to a blank Composer page, it falls into line!
Not only that, but I get plenty of mail from some friends on AOL which is
perfectly "normal"
But then, they may still have 5.0...

I would like to think this isn't unsolvable. oh well.

Just for the record, I've been working with computers since 1961 which means
I tend
to sneer at all the windows frills and get really annoyed at a whole lot of
things it does
and doesn't do. I'm trying to adjust - photoshop helps, I like that. But Id
give a lot
to have a unix shell account back and do my mail in pine!

Thanks for your input though - maybe someone will figure it all out.

2001-01-22 Thread Tom Rittenhouse

Ann, part of the problem is AOL 6.0 is crippled. Apparently
users can not turn off HTML for their email. That is why the
small strange type. Your using large type is the reason even
normal text base stuff goes off the screen. When you make your
default type bigger, your are reducing the number of characters
the screen can display. Normal type displays 80 characters
across the screen. When you enlarge your type you may only be
able to see 32 or 40 characters. Then you would have the type
running off the screen or have truncated lines depending on
whether you have word wrap turned on or not.

Re: Formatting discussions - a suggestion

2001-01-22 Thread Tom Rittenhouse

Not really. The problem is you have a lot of truncated tag ends
of
lines. It would be better if every body set their outgoing text
to
something less than screen width. 64 character was the
standard, but I
think that had more to do with some people using old apple II
and radio
shack trs80 and the like that had 64 character screens. As Shel
said
above that does allow for several levels of quoting. Netscape
defaults
to 72 characters I believe.

I should have clarified that I'm a no-mailer, so I read the messages in
my browser - Netscape 4.7.

And, yes, sometimes I'm a no-brainer, too.

Some place in the Preferences section of your browser or email reader there
should be an optioon to wrap long lines.

Check it out in your help section.

Setting the wrap at something like 64 characters is, perhaps,
an even better option, as it allows for multiple quoting
without the characters running to the next line and not
showing as a quote.

Formatting discussions - a suggestion

2001-01-21 Thread Joseph Tainter

Something new to this new list seems to be that many messages have lines
that are too long for the screen width, so that I have to use the bar at
the bottom of the screen to go back and forth to see all of a line. It's
a bit of a nuisance for multi-line messages - which is most of them.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I have set my e-mail to wrap outgoing messages at 72 characters. That
seems to center the text nicely on PDML. As a courtesy to readers, would
others of you please try this?

Thanks,
