Re: PESOs: Backyard Birds

2024-04-30 Thread Rick Womer
What Henk and Alan said! I have always enjoyed your bird photos.

I’m particularly fond of white throated sparrows for their song. Philly isn’t
in their range, so I con’t hear their song until we go to a New Hampshire lake
for a vacation during the summer. That’s my “happy place,” and this bird
contributes to my enjoyment.

Nice pictures, in particular the lepelaar.
It looks to me that LR Denoise AI does a pretty good job here.

I have installed LR classic now.
Without heavy cropping I usually don't have to deal with noise on my APSC
and FF pictures.
However I tried last week new LR denoise successfully on some ISO 3200 K-1
pictures taken at a concert where the background was completely black.

I like the Terns(?) in flight. I haven't had much success with that sort
of shot yet. The others are Sandplovers I think. We occasionally get
small groups of species of both at Sable Dam in the Kruger Park, about
200km from the coast in Mozambique. They fly up the major rivers.

I pretty much agree with what Ann said (including the stupid "incredible")
iMind you, when I got to the "Waterfowl" section I found myself thinking of
Steve McQueen and his baseball (and couldn't get rid of the Bernstein earworm).

Coincidentally in the last week Microsoft decided to feature the Blue-Footed
Booby as the lock screen first on her machine then, a few days later, on mine.
This prompted me to comment that I didn't know why Microsoft thought I wanted
to look at pictures of Boobys ...

the abundance of birdlife in such a hostile environment but I suppose
there must be sufficient food & water. Glad you achieved your objective

Stanley's, a bit smaller than yours, found on the Highveld.

I like the hornbill shot best .. it shows how miserably parched the land

OK Larry - done. I adjusted the levels a bit. I initially didn't crop

Great shots. I’d like the elephants cropped in a bit tighter, and maybe a
couple ticks darker.

I put all of my unpublished bird shots in one album. There isn’t anything
super special in there, though some decent ones. Most are from Oregon, though
the turkeys and peckers are local, and were shot with the 18-270. There’s even

I think the corvids are crows.

The vultures, being backlit, were a bit challenging. I had stopped to
photograph some dead cars and Olga alerted me to the vultures, she could see
one out the passenger window when I parked.

I think it's Anser albifrons, Kolgans in NL. White-fronted goose in
the UK and greater white-fronted goose in the US? Confusing names...
Also my translation of Blauwe Reiger to Blue Heron is wrong, it should

Its binomial name (here) is. Troglodytes troglodytes. There are about 30
subspecies, many of them endemic to islands, such as the Corsican and St Kilda
wrens. They all have triple-barrelled names. There is about the same number
of fully seperate species in the New World.

Everybody knows where the border is, that’s not at issue. The question was at
what point, and at which border, should various controls take place and that
has been settled.

I hope the Scots get another opportunity soon to decide their future.

I also think that Ireland should never have been partitioned and hope for a

You know, some of our founding fathers wanted to make German the language
of the American government, instead of English. The area I live in was
settled first by the Native Americans, then by Swedes, then by Dutch, and
then by German refugees. The English Army threw the Dutch out of New
Netherlands by force, as the English were wont to do.

I hope England survives and thrives as an isolated island after Brexit, but
I also hope the Scots leave and rejoin the EU and the Northern
Irish finally give up and join the Republic. The question of where the
border is remains a thorny one for the UK and the EU. It is hard to see
how every side can be accommodated.

The ones in our garden are occasionally visible, as they flit from one clump of
vegetation to another. Even more rarely they will perch somewhere obvious and
shreik defiance at the world, before going back into hiding and carrying on
being noisy from there. They are highly amusing.

The wren picture is from a French website. Troglodyte is simply the French for
wren. It really means a cave-dweller, the meaning you give is secondary to that
(when we were children living in Anglesey we called the local people trogs).
The French version of the wren apparently lives in small holes.

After I sent my original reply it occurred to me that the (British) English
equivalent of mignon would be sweet, as in ‘what a sweet little child’.

Etymologically it is from an Old High German word ‘minnia’ meaning love
(https://fr.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/mignon).

Re: OT: Species of Birds Named By People Who Clearly Hate Birds

2021-02-13 Thread ann sanfedele
I have to agree with Mike..and I love those bird names! - they are funny
and sometimes very sweet and/or rightly descriptive . and remember,
these mentioned are just the ENGLISH language version of the birds
common names, i.e., nicknames.. Not their actual zoological species
names in most cases.

(note to that twitter poster.. ugh)

I was kind of annoyed by the headline on Twisted Sifter "Species of
Birds Named By People Who Clearly Hate Birds is a Thing and It’s Incredible"

(it's the "incredible" that really got to me)

Much funnier (IMHO) and enjoyable are the two books by John, Ben and
Catheryn Sill who love birds but have invented a variety of species and
illustrated them in " A field Guide to LIttle Known and Seldom Seen
birds of North America." I've got the original paperbacks from 1988 and
1990..but there is a 2013 volume with a new not as cute cover on Amazon
as well.  Lots of used copies all over the internet, at least on this
side of the pond..

Thats because they are different :-)

LArry - your friend selected a couple of my faves.. the main thing for
field guide worthiness is sharpness and true coloration... so moody shots
or photos where part of some key elements are obscured by a twig, a
leaf, another bird , a shadow, etc ..  stay out of the FGW bin...

I'm hating it that I'm losing my skill at recognizing species in much
the fasion that I'm losing actors names that I've always known..

Been sick for a couple days..  but better now so Haven't been looking

Birds!

2020-11-14 Thread Larry Colen
A friend is teaching an online class on identifying land birds in the “North
Bay” (Sonoma, Santa Rosa …) and asked if she could use some of my photos. I
took the ones she picked and put them in an album:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157716872917688/

Not all of them are identified in the tags, and I think I have a chickadee
mis-identified as a sparrow.

So, first of all if anyone wants to go through them and help identify them in
the comments, that would be amazing.

I’d also like to expand on the concept and add to this album, so it would be
great if people could go through my bird photos and comment “fgc” for "field
guide candidate” on any that you think would be good to add to the album. I
may be able to get an occasional clear photo of birds, but I’m miserable at
identifying them, and don’t really know what folks would need in that
department, so assistance in picking out photos is very helpful.

Thanks Mark. Writing about my birds was a nice change for me.

Re: PESO - Angry Birds

2020-10-24 Thread Alan C
I looked it up. Interesting, well organised place. Many of the animals
seem to be quite tame. I see both Zebra species (the Plains & the
Mountain) are there. I initially thought your "Angry Birds" were young
Ostriches but I see they are actually Rheas.

Ann, this was at Franklin Drive Thru Safari. It is a small-ish one,
near a small town of Franklin, just 40-some-minutes drive from us.
It is one of very few relatively safe activities during the hot and
long Texas summer.

We've been at FW zoo (as well as Dallas and Houston ones) - but it's
been a while ago. I am thinking that of those "traditional zoos, I
liked the one in Dallas the most.

I liked th Fort Worth zoo quite a lot - but that was way way back in
1985 - at that point I was not aware of a Dallas Zoo.. I thought the
Fort Worth
one was one in the same.. I was visiting friends in Dallas on my drive
home from Houston after my mom passed away.

They may not be angry, but they’re a pretty good emu-lation.
